  • How to make XmlnsDefinition work on the local assembly?

    I've started using the XmlnsDefinition attribute to tie together some CLR namespaces into a single xmlns for convenience in XAML. Unfortunately, it seems that this only works when using foreign assemblies. If I have a XAML file in the same assembly as the types that are in the namespace I'm referencing from XmlnsDefinition, then it says the type does not exist in the xmlns I am defining. Moving the type to a foreign assembly fixes the problem. Is there a way to use XmlnsDefinition on an assembly and have it be used from within that assembly via XAML?

  • How can I change the name of a dynamic assembly after it has been created?

    Is there any way to change the name of a dynamic assembly after it has been created? I'm using a framework that uses dynamic methods, and it is creating a dynamic assembly with the same name as my main assembly (which causes problems with WPF when it tries to load resources). So I need to find a workaround, and I thought of trying to change the name of the dynamic assembly. I've tried using GetName() and then setting the Name property, but it appears that GetName returns a clone of the name because my change doesn't stick. What else can I try?

  • VB .Net - Reflection: Reflected Method from a loaded Assembly executes before calling method. Why?

    When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it. It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text.   • How do I access the ApplicationSettings section from another assembly?

In the ApplicationSettings section of the app.config for the parent assembly I have some settings that can be accessed in the normal intellisense manner (e.g. Properties.Settings.Default.SMTPServer). How do I access these settings from the referenced dll? I obviously can't use intellisense as they are not in the same assembly!

  • C#: How do I get the path of the assembly the code is in?

    Is there a way to get the path for the assembly in which the current code resides? I do not want the path of the calling assembly, just the one containing the code. Basically my unit test needs to read some xml test files which are located relative to the dll. I want the path to always resolve correctly regardless of whether the testing dll is run from TestDriven.NET, the MbUnit GUI or something else. Edit: People seem to be misunderstanding what I'm asking. My test library is located in say c:\projects\myapplication\daotests\bin\Debug\daotests.dll and I would like to get the "*c:\projects\myapplication\daotests\bin\Debug*" path.   • Why does ASP.NET web site reference assembly from GAC, when adding local reference?

    When you use ASP.NET web site (instead of web application model) and add reference to an assembly from local folder, Visual Studio, it seems, understands that this local assembly is also in GAC and so does NOT copy this assembly to bin folder (as it does with non-GAC assemblies), but simply adds new record in web.config file. Why such a behaviour? Is it possible to force copy to bin folder (I need this since .dll is not on target environment)? I can add assembly to bin folder as file and it will work, but in this case bin folder contents will be in source control, which is not good.

  • Where to put my xUnit tests for an F# assembly?

    I'm working on my first 'real' F# assembly, and trying to do things right. I've managed to get xUnit working too, but currently my test module is inside the same assembly. This bothers me a bit, because it means I'll be shipping an assembly where nearly half the code (and 80% of the API) is test methods. What is the 'right' way to do this? If I put the tests in another assembly, I think that means I have to expose internals that I'd rather keep private. I know that in C# there is a friend mechanism for tests (if that's the right terminology), is there an equivalent in F#? Alternatively, can anyone point me to an example project where this is being done 'properly'?

  • Can An Assembly Be Installed In The GAC but not Show Up In Gacutil.exe?

    I've got an application where some assemblies are copied to C:\Windows\assembly upon deployment under the assumption that this installs them in the GAC. The application seems to work but when I run gacutil.exe on the copied assemblies, it says the Global Assembly Cache contains 0 assemblies. Should all assemblies in c:\Windows\assembly show up in gacutil? If not, why not? How can I verify that the assembly is in fact installed in the GAC? I have always used gacutil.exe in the past to register assemblies so doing a file copy is new to me and I'm trying to understand the ramifications.

  • What's the point of delay signing of an .NET assembly?

    I noticed that after I use AssemblyDelaySignAttribute to indicate that an assembly is in development and does not need to be signed now, I'll have to use sn -Vr foolib.dll to register for strong name verification to be turned off for this assembly. What's the point of doing this circle? Why not just leave the assembly unsigned until it's fully done? Isn't that less bothering?

    I'm currently writing a custom forms application that allows a user to design a data capture form. I store the field's ControlType and ControlAssembly in the database and then create them on the forms at runtime. For example: ControlType = `System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox`. ControlAssembly= `System.Web`. So I can therefor create a fully qualified name and create the control doing the following: string target = Assembly.CreateQualifiedName("System.Web", field.ControlType); Type type = Type.GetType(target); Control control = Activator.CreateInstance(type) as Control; But, this will cause an error as "System.Web" is not a valid assembly name. The assembly name itself has to be fully qualified, i.e. System.Web.Extensions would be: "System.Web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" Is there any way I can get the fully qualified name of the assembly System.Web without having to store the entirity of the version, culture and PKT?

  • Version Assemblies with TFS 2010 Continuous Integration

    When I first heard that TFS 2010 had moved to Workflow Foundation for Team Build, I was *extremely* skeptical. I’ve loved MSBuild and didn’t quite understand the reasons for this change. In fact, given that I’ve been exclusively using Cruise Control for Continuous Integration (CI) for the last 5+ years of my career, I was skeptical of TFS for CI in general. However, after going through the learning process for TFS 2010 recently, I’m starting to become a believer. I’m also starting to see some of the benefits with Workflow Foundation for the overall processing because it gives you constructs not available in MSBuild such as parallel tasks, better control flow constructs, and a slightly better customization story. The first customization I had to make to the build process was to version the assemblies of my solution. This is not new. In fact, I’d recommend reading Mike Fourie’s well known post on Versioning Code in TFS before you get started. This post describes several foundational aspects of versioning assemblies regardless of your version of TFS. The main points are: 1) don’t use source control operations for your version file, 2) use a schema like <Major>.<Minor>.<IncrementalNumber>.0, and 3) do not keep AssemblyVersion and AssemblyFileVersion in sync. To do this in TFS 2010, the best post I’ve found has been Jim Lamb’s post of building a custom TFS 2010 workflow activity. Overall, this post is excellent but the primary issue I have with it is that the assembly version numbers produced are based in a date and look like this: “2010.5.15.1”. This is definitely not what I want. I want to be able to communicate to the developers and stakeholders that we are producing the “1.1 release” or “1.2 release” – which would have an assembly version number of “1.1.317.0” for example. In this post, I’ll walk through the process of customizing the assembly version number based on this method – customizing the concepts in Lamb’s post to suit my needs. I’ll also be combining this with the concepts of Fourie’s post – particularly with regards to the standards around how to version the assemblies. The first thing I’ll do is add a file called SolutionAssemblyVersionInfo.cs to the root of my solution that looks like this: 1: using System; 2: using System.Reflection; 3: [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.1.0.0")] 4: [assembly: AssemblyFileVersion("1.1.0.0")] I’ll then add that file as a Visual Studio link file to each project in my solution by right-clicking the project, “Add – Existing Item…” then when I click the SolutionAssemblyVersionInfo.cs file, making sure I “Add As Link”: Now the Solution Explorer will show our file. We can see that it’s a “link” file because of the black arrow in the icon within all our projects. Of course you’ll need to remove the AssemblyVersion and AssemblyFileVersion attributes from the AssemblyInfo.cs files to avoid the duplicate attributes since they now leave in the SolutionAssemblyVersionInfo.cs file. This is an extremely common technique so that all the projects in our solution can be versioned as a unit. At this point, we’re ready to write our custom activity. The primary consideration is that I want the developer and/or tech lead to be able to easily be in control of the Major.Minor and then I want the CI process to add the third number with a unique incremental number. We’ll leave the fourth position always “0” for now – it’s held in reserve in case the day ever comes where we need to do an emergency patch to Production based on a branched version.   Writing the Custom Workflow Activity Similar to Lamb’s post, I’m going to write two custom workflow activities. The “outer” activity (a xaml activity) will be pretty straight forward. It will check if the solution version file exists in the solution root and, if so, delegate the replacement of version to the AssemblyVersionInfo activity which is a CodeActivity highlighted in red below:   Notice that the arguments of this activity are the “solutionVersionFile” and “tfsBuildNumber” which will be passed in. The tfsBuildNumber passed in will look something like this: “CI_MyApplication.4” and we’ll need to grab the “4” (i.e., the incremental revision number) and put that in the third position. Then we’ll need to honor whatever was specified for Major.Minor in the SolutionAssemblyVersionInfo.cs file. For example, if the SolutionAssemblyVersionInfo.cs file had “1.1.0.0” for the AssemblyVersion (as shown in the first code block near the beginning of this post), then we want to resulting file to have “1.1.4.0”. Make a copy of the DefaultTempate.xaml – we’ll call it DefaultTemplateWithVersioning.xaml. Before the build and labeling happens, drag the VersionAssemblies activity in. Then set the LabelName variable to “BuildDetail.BuildDefinition.Name + "-" + newAssemblyFileVersion since the newAssemblyFileVersion was produced by our activity.   Configuring CI Once you add your solution to source control, you can configure CI with the build definition window as shown here. The main difference is that we’ll change the Process tab to reflect a different build number format and choose our custom build process file:   When the build completes, we’ll see the name of our project with the unique revision number:   If we look at the detailed build log for the latest build, we’ll see the label being created with our custom task:     We can now look at the history labels in TFS and see the project name with the labels (the Assignment activity I added to the workflow):   Finally, if we look at the physical assemblies that are produced, we can right-click on any assembly in Windows Explorer and see the assembly version in its properties:   Full Traceability We now have full traceability for our code. There will never be a question of what code was deployed to Production. You can always see the assembly version in the properties of the physical assembly. That can be traced back to a label in TFS where the unique revision number matches. The label in TFS gives you the complete snapshot of the code in your source control repository at the time the code was built. This type of process for full traceability has been used for many years for CI – in fact, I’ve done similar things with CCNet and SVN for quite some time. This is simply the TFS implementation of that pattern. The new features that TFS 2010 give you to make these types of customizations in your build process are quite easy once you get over the initial curve.

    What I'm trying to do is to update my database after a period of time. So I'm using java scheduler and connection pooling. I don't know why but my code only working once.     I wanted to post a solution to an issue that comes up every time I have to setup a new developer in our organization:      Could not load file or assembly 'AjaxControlToolkit' or one of its dependencies.     I'm currently studying engineering in Telecommunications and Electronics and we have migrated from assembler to C in microprocessor programming. I have doubts that this is a good idea. What are some advantages and disadvantages of C compared to assembly? The advantages/disadvantages I see are: Advantages: I can tell that C syntax is a lot easier to learn than Assembler syntax. C is easier to use for making more complex programs. Learning C is somehow more productive than learning assembler cause there is more developing stuff around C than Assembler. Disadvantages: Assembler is a lower level programming language than C,so this makes it a good for programming directly to hardware. Is a lot more flexible alluding you to work with memory,interrupts,micro-registers,etc.

  • Deploying .NET COM dll, getting error (0x80070002)

    I have a .NET COM assembly I am attempting to deploy to a web server (IIS 6 Win 2003). We have successfully deployed this assembly to our test environment, but the production environment is not working. The assembly is being called from a classic ASP page. Every time that page tries to initialize the assembly with “Set LTMRender = CreateObject("LTMRender.Render")”, I get an error “Error Type:, (0x80070002)”. This error seems to indicate a permission denied, or file not found type problem. I created a test app to see if the assembly works outside of the web page. The .exe initializes the assembly, and then makes a call designed to fail which in turn causes the assembly to produce a log file. It works if I run the .exe in the same folder as the assembly, but fails if I run it elsewhere. For some reason, the assembly is not accessible from outside it’s folder. I can’t figure out why this won’t work. Things I have confirmed: The deployment folder has adequate permissions. We have confirmed that the folder the assembly in installed in has the correct permissions for all the necessary user accounts. The Assembly is signed with a strong name, and was registered with regasm.exe C:_WebSites\LTMRender\LTMRender.dll /codebase /tlb:C:_WebSites\LTMRender\LTMRender.tlb. Regasm reported success. The Assembly has the attribute and relevant GUID’s set correctly. Any tips? EDIT We ran filemon against my testapp.exe and it seems to have indicated what the problem is. When testapp.exe runs in D:_websites\DocWebV2\ or D:_websites\DocWebV2\ LTMRender\ folder, it succeeds and filemon is showing D:_websites\DocWebV2\LTMRender\pinPDF.dll SUCCESS If I run my testapp.exe in the D:_websites\DocWebV2\Client – where my asp pages run, it shows D:_websites\DocWebV2\pinPDF.dll NAME NOT FOUND and then D:_websites\DocWebV2\pinPDF\pinPDF.dll FILE NOT FOUND I’m not sure why it is not looking in the correct folder if it’s under this particular folder only.

  • Should I register the domain name that has not popular top level domain name

    Lets say for example you want to register domain name assembly.com or assembly.net and find out that they are already registered(not available). Would you go with the domain name assemb.ly in such case? By having .ly the domain name represent word assembly but I think .ly domain is not so friendly for search engines? What do you think? Do you see any advantage of asemb.ly over assembly.com or assembly.net except it is shorter?

    Hi all, SKIP TO UPDATE 3 I want to enable the Seam debug page on Weblogic 10.3.2 (11g). So, I have done the following: I have the jboss-seam and jboss-seam-debug jars as dependency in both my ejb and web maven projects (both are modules of my superproject) I put this context parameter in my web.xml: <context-param> <param-name>org.jboss.seam.core.init.debug</param-name> <param-value>true</param-value> </context-param> Now, when I hit the URL of my application, I get the debug page with this exception (full stacktrace at the end of the post): Caused by java.lang.IllegalStateException with message: "No phase id bound to current thread (make sure you do not have two SeamPhaseListener instances installed)" From posts I read it seems that this is somehow related to two jars of jboss-seam or jboss-seam-debug being in the classpath. I opened my ear file and only one of each is present (in the ear) whereas the war itself has no libraries in the WEB-INF/lib. I have also read of another way to initialize debug page using the components.xml. They have an outer EAR project containing the inner WAR project. They discuss that this may be related to how jars end up in the projects. I use Maven, and I had set it to create "Skinny Wars", that is excluding all jar dependencies from the inner WAR project, so that it remains small in size. All its dependencies are contained in the EAR and are used by all other modules. I changed the settings of the maven-war-plugin to leave inside the war the web-specific jars (the ones mentioned in the link, like RichFaces, jboss-seam-debug, Facelets etc). However, the problem has reverted to its previous form. I now get the debug page, whatever link I press, with the initial exception. And why does it do mov eax, ebx? It seems that it generates the partial stack frame because of the mov eax, ebx.
