• Security and encryption with OpenVPN

  The UK government is trying to implement man-in-the-middle attack systems in order to capture header data in all packets. They are also equipping the "black boxes" they will use with technology to see encrypted data (see the Communications Data Bill). I use a VPN to increase my privacy. It uses OpenVPN, which in turn uses the OpenSSL libraries for encrypting data. Will the government be able to see all the data going through the VPN connection? Note: the VPN server is located in Sweden, if that makes a difference.

• How to locate phpmyadmin on ubuntu

  Okay, I'm usually a windows user and I write quite happily there, unfortunately (or fortunately) I have installed linux on a dual boot and having installed some software I have a question... Where is it? I installed Apache, PHP, MySQL and separately phpmyadmin, Apache is up and running, I've seen my phpinfo page and MySQL is there. MySQL is telling me that there's a database for phpmyadmin, but...erm.. I can't seem to locate it. On a windows machine the directory would be in the www directory and I'd just navigate there... localhost/phpmyadmin/ but on Ubuntu I can't find it in the equivalent. I've been to /var/www/ and there's my index.html (from apache) and my phptest.php file but no phpmyadmin. There is a phpmyadmin in /lib but that only has 2 files in it. So having rambled lots, my question is, what do I have to do to be able to navigate to the phpmyadmin index page? I realise this could fall under the description of a server related question and should be posted elsewhere but as it's software on a home system some help would be appreciated. Do I need to move some files from somewhere? Help! I really don't want to have to go back to developing on Windows as I'll be deploying to a lamp system, my learning curve will be steep.

• Running SQL 2008 on a VM

  We are pondering trying to set up a SQL 2008 instance inside a VM for a production environment. All our SQL instances use iSCSI over gigabit ethernet to talk to a NAS, as would this new instance. Any reason this is a bad idea or any considerations to make this work well? The VM would be running in Xen 5.5 or we could set it up in Hyper-V if there's a compelling case for that. And the VM's VHD would be stored on a different NAS then the SQL storage is on.

• which virtualization technology is right for me?

  I need a little help with this getting this sorted out. I want to setup a linux virtual server that I can use to run both sever and desktop systems. I want a linux system that is minimalist in nature as all the main os will be doing is acting as a hypervisor. The system I'm trying to setup will be running a file server, windows 7, ubuntu 10.04, windows xp and a firewall/gateway security system. All the client OS'es accessing and storing files on the file server. Also all network traffic will be routed through the gateway guest os. The file sever will need direct disk access while the other guests can run one disk images. All of this will be running on the same computer so I wont be romoting in to access the guests OS'es. Also if possible I would like to be able to use my triple head setup in the guest OS'es. I've looked at Xen, kvm and virtualbox but I don't know which is the best for me. I'm really debating between kvm and virtual box as kvm seem to support direct hardware access.

  Hi there, I´ve got an jpeg image with text on it (badly scanned document), which is hardly readable. I have already played around with the sharpen filters, contrast, levels and the color replacement tool, with decent success. however my question is, what else can be done order to maximize the texts readablity? the picture is also somewhat noisy. Any help on this one would be greatly apreciated, since I absolutely need the images content.

• How do I connect to my InterBase db on a Windows Server from Delphi XE?

  I have installed InterBase on a Windows Server 2008, added a database through IBConsole and I'm trying to set up a connection to it from Delphi XE. I've clicked on the DataExplorer tab and right clicked "INTERBASE/Add New Connection". This is where I am having trouble setting it up correctly. Anyone know this stuff? I'm waaaay out of my comfort zone here but I'm helping some people out and I'm trying to get this to work myself so that I hopefully can fix the problems they are having.

• Error compiling PHP 5.5.9 on CentOS 6.5 during make command

I am using Ansible to provision my instance. It is a Digital Ocean single core 512MB VM. I have been using vagrant / ansible with the same config locally for dev and it has compiled fine, this is the first cloud VM I am attempting to provision. The only difference is the base image for my DO server is coming from DO and for my local dev, I built my own Vagrant box via VirtualBox from a stock CentOS basic server install. I pull it down from my DropBox. • Samba doesnt require password on xbmc but does on ubuntu

  I have samba setup on a fedora 13 machine, and I use it to share with my xbmc client in the family room. When I set this up there no password or anything was required I merely entered in paths such as: smb://<host>/<share> and all worked. Now on my ubuntu 10.04 machine when I try to access the same hosts, for example through smbmount though I receive an error. smbmount //media/Music ~/Music/ # media is in my /etc/hosts and resolves to # correct IP address for the machine I receive error: operation not permitted after pressing enter when it prompts for password. • fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

  I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)? • Gnome 3 - Unable to change date and time

  I am running Arch Linux with Gnome 3. Unfortunately, although my time and date settings in /etc/rc.conf show that HARDWARECLOCK='UTC' and TIMEZONE='America/LosAngeles'. I continue to get the timezone of Europe/London. If I try to change the date and time via the GUI. It requires root access. After authorizing root access, the date and time may be changed; however, after closing the GUI window, it automatically reverts back to the previous incorrect timezone. I am able to use pool.ntp.org in order to sync my time to the correct one; however, this works only for the current session and is not fixed. This solution is inconvenient since there is not always network access. What other solutions are available for this problem?

• Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

  Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!

One of the first things I went to do is install Microsoft Security Essentials, thinking I still needed add-on security software, but I've learned here that it isn't required for Windows 8. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 8, but you don't need to — Windows Defender is already included and ready to go. [...] All well and good. However, on Windows 7, once you installed Microsoft Security Essentials, you got a tray icon, and from there you could access the features of MSE, such as perform custom scans, turn off real-time protection (temporarily, of course), check for updates, etc. However, Defender on Windows 8 doesn't display a tray icon – and yes, I've already made sure I'm displaying all icons in the notification area. So, how to access the similar specific features of Windows Defender on Windows 8?

  ok what Im doing normally works but since my rule "includes" itself is giving me issues and can't find a solution after hours working on different options. I have a .htaccess with: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/3.15.0/(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /3.15.0/$1 [L] this is for my software versions, I have a program that can request sometimes versions that are updated and in the server may be behind a couple version so I want to be able to say that whatever is comming in forward to the latest version that in this example is 3.15.0 /var/www/nameblabla/3.15.0 my .htaccess is on /var/www/nameblabla/.htaccess so the first Condition is to ignore request that already has the right path and version.. the second should be to grab all request and forward to 3.15.0... and of course not loose the path to the files I want from inside that should be the same. so far I can only get it to redirect to such directory but will loose the path and others I get the "Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects" I guess this is because Im including the 3.15.0 path Any help or another way to do this with out mod_rewrite?

• Linux Mint loses Window Focus

  I recently installed Linux Mint 13 64bit with Cinamon Desktop and run into a weird problem. It's about losing Mouse-Focus if more than one Window are open. For Example, I open up Chromium, play around a little bit, and then, if I try to open any Programms from the Taskbar, I cannot click on it. It seems that Chromium won't free his Focus. Another Example, if I open two Windows (e.g. Chromium and a Terminal) and I work with Chromium, then click into the Terminal I get no Focus to it. Sorry, its a bit hard to explain.

  I have a program that automatically copies files to a directory, and if it creates a duplicate it will name it like so: file with duplicate.xxx file with duplicate - 1.xxx file with duplicate - 2.xxx I need a way to delete all the duplicates with a windows batch file. Something along the lines of: FOR %f IN (C:\files\*.*) DO del "%f - 1" However, that will not work because that would resolve to file with duplicate - 1.xxx - 1

• Empty Recycle Bin error "Cannot Delete Dc12: Access denied."

  The Dc number can vary. The error is a sporadic, but when it happens it prevents the contents of the recycle bin from being deleted. It can also occur when the recycle bin appears to be empty, yet it has the crumpled paper indicator. Rebooting makes the problem go away, but it can also magically go away by just waiting a long time, like over night. But the problem keeps recurring with no rhyme or reason. What is causing this? I really don't want to reinstall Windows.

I made the mistake of installing Google's Android SDK, and now when I try to check for updates via the "Check For Updates" or "Install New Software", some Android process runs, consumes all my CPU, takes up 3 gigs of memory, and crashes Eclipse. I can't even get to the uninstall dialog before Google's plugin kills everything.

• SharePoint 2010 MySites - Simple explanation needed!

  I've been playing around with the 2010 beta for a couple of weeks, experimenting with topology options etc. I think I've got myself totally confused as to how it works hence if there's any SP experts out there that can explain things in simple terms for me I'd appreciate it! I want to setup a farm with 3 servers providing the content & MySites. I presume that the way to do this is to load balance or DNS round robin traffic between the 3 servers. The bit where I'm confused is that My Site Settings page asks for a specific My Site Host hence all my site traffic will be pushed to a single server even though we have 3 in the farm. If this hosts fails I presume MySites will be unavailable. Is this right? How do I configure it so that access to MySites is load balanced across the 3 servers in the farm?

• What's the simplest way to get .flac music files into iTunes?

  I'm looking for a simple way to import .flac files into iTunes, so I can play them on my mac, and when I'm out, my iPhone, and I'm willing to be I'm not the first person to want to do this. What are the best tools for doing this? The quality of the music is useful, but truth be told, the speakers I'd play them on are so crappy that a lot of the sound quality in the .flac format would be lost anyway, so I'm not averse to converting to mp3 files. If it helps give any context, I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 9, connected to a 16gb iPhone with standard apple headphones, which is sometimes plugged into Bose SoundDock for music, and the music files are piano performances. • Windows Login Failure

  I'm getting an error in the Event Viewer, which is also generating a lot of Logon Failure messages on our syslog server. Pretty much stuck on how to resolve. EventID: 536 Logon Type: 3 Reason: The NetLogon component is not active This is for a Windows Server 2003 system. I have checked here We're using Shavlik Protect 9 to scan and deploy patches. Shavlik stores the credentials for the systems and uses those stored credentials to deploy patches. This system is able to scan and deploy to other systems on the network using those credentials and no errors are generated. When installing to the local system that Shavlik is physically on then this error is generated. Whats interesting is that it doesn't generate during a scan, and the patches install fine. We've contacted Shavlik to get the response that they are unable to help since it's a Microsoft error. Has anyone seen this?
