• How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7 in ASP.NET Caching application

  Pardon if this is more serverfault vs. stackoverflow. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value. • Converting HTML to plain text in PHP for e-mail

  I use TinyMCE to allow minimal formatting of text within my site. From the HTML that's produced, I'd like to convert it to plain text for e-mail. I've been using a class called html2text, but it's really lacking in UTF-8 support, among other things. I do, however, like that it maps certain HTML tags to plain text formatting — like putting underscores around text that previously had <i> tags in the HTML. Does anyone use a similar approach to converting HTML to plain text in PHP? And if so: Do you recommend any third-party classes that I can use? Or how do you best tackle this issue? Thanks!

• Have problems designing input and output for a calculator app

  Hello! I am writing a button calculator. I have the code split into model, view and a controller. The model knows nothing about formatting, it is only concerned with numbers. All formatting is done in the view. The model gets its input as keypresses, each keypress is a part of an enum: typedef enum { kButtonUnknown = 0, kButtonMemoryClear = 100, kButtonMemoryPlus = 112, kButtonMemoryMinus = 109, kButtonMemoryRecall = 114, kButtonClear = 99, … }; When the user presses a button (say 1), the model receives a button code (kButtonNum1), adds the corresponding number to a string input buffer ("1") and updates the numeric output value (1.0). The controller then passes the numeric output value to the view that formats it (1). This is all plain, simple and clean, but does not really work. The problem is that when user enters a part of a number (say 0.00, going to enter 0.001), the input does not survive the way through model to view and the display says 0 instead of 0.00. I know why this happens ("0.00"::string parses to 0::double and that gets formatted as 0). What I don’t know is how to design the calculator so that the code stays clean and simple and the numbers will show up on screen exactly as the user types them. I’ve already come with some kind of solution, but that’s essentially a hack and breaks the beautiful and simple flow from the calculator model to the display. Ideas? Current solution keeps track of the calculator state. If the calculator is building a number, I take the calculator input buffer (a string) and directly set the display contents (also a string). Otherwise I take the proper path, ie. take the numeric calculator output, pass it to the view as a double and the view uses its internal formatter to create a string for the display. Example input: input | display | mode ------+---------+------------ 0 | 0 | from string 0. | 0. | from string 0.0 | 0.0 | from string 0.0+ | 0 | from number This is ugly. (1) The calculator has to expose its input buffer and state. (2) The view has to expose its display and allow setting its contents directly using a string. (3) I have to duplicate some of the formatting code to format the string I got from the calculator input buffer. If user enters 12345.000, I have to display 12,345.000 and therefore I’ve got to have a commification code for strings. Yuck.

• Programmatically clean Word generated HTML while preserving styles?

  In my current company, we have this decade old... let's call it a "Hello World" application. While wanting to create a newer version of it, we also want to preserve older entries. These older entries contain hideous Word generated HTML which was never filtered before. If and when we move to a newer system, I'd generally prefer to have that HTML cleaned and filtered in order to have the site comply with HTML standards as much as possible. However, just cleaning that code like Jeff Atwood described in his blog or in any other way I know of would also ruin the style and formatting. Now, that just might cause our users to revolt and then all hell will break loose... Not a very good idea. Question is -- can Word's HTML be cleaned while preserving basic formatting? (e.g: coloring, italicized, bold text and so on) Preferably using publicly available code or library, such as HTML Tidy, examples in C# would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  Hi, my date formatting in PHP is d-M-Y and I'm trying to match the dates with a javascript regex: s.match(new RegExp(/^(\d{1,2})(\-)(\w{3})(\-)(\d{4})$/)) To be used with the jQuery plugin, tablesorter. The problem is it's not working and I'm wondering why not. I tried removing the dashes in my date() formatting (d M Y) and tried the ff and it worked: s.match(new RegExp(/^\d{1,2}[ ]\w{3}[ ]\d{4}$/)); My question is what is the correct regex if I'm using dashes on PHP's date() i.e. d-M-Y?   When a user is not logged in and tries to access an page that requires login, what is the correct HTTP status code for a redirect to the login page? I don't feel that any of the 3xx fit that description. 10.3.1 300 Multiple Choices The requested resource corresponds to any one of a set of representations, each with its own specific location, and agent- driven negotiation information (section 12) is being provided so that the user (or user agent) can select a preferred representation and redirect its request to that location. Unless it was a HEAD request, the response SHOULD include an entity containing a list of resource characteristics and location(s) from which the user or user agent can choose the one most appropriate. The entity format is specified by the media type given in the Content- Type header field. Depending upon the format and the capabilities of the user agent, selection of the most appropriate choice MAY be performed automatically. However, this specification does not define any standard for such automatic selection. If the server has a preferred choice of representation, it SHOULD include the specific URI for that representation in the Location field; user agents MAY use the Location field value for automatic redirection. This response is cacheable unless indicated otherwise. 10.3.2 301 Moved Permanently The requested resource has been assigned a new permanent URI and any future references to this resource SHOULD use one of the returned URIs. Clients with link editing capabilities ought to automatically re-link references to the Request-URI to one or more of the new references returned by the server, where possible. This response is cacheable unless indicated otherwise. The new permanent URI SHOULD be given by the Location field in the response. Unless the request method was HEAD, the entity of the response SHOULD contain a short hypertext note with a hyperlink to the new URI(s). Note: RFC 1945 and RFC 2068 specify that the client is not allowed to change the method on the redirected request. The status codes 303 and 307 have been added for servers that wish to make unambiguously clear which kind of reaction is expected of the client. 10.3.4 303 See Other The response to the request can be found under a different URI and SHOULD be retrieved using a GET method on that resource. This method exists primarily to allow the output of a POST-activated script to redirect the user agent to a selected resource. The new URI is not a substitute reference for the originally requested resource. The 303 response MUST NOT be cached, but the response to the second (redirected) request might be cacheable. The different URI SHOULD be given by the Location field in the response. Unless the request method was HEAD, the entity of the response SHOULD contain a short hypertext note with a hyperlink to the new URI(s). Note: Many pre-HTTP/1.1 user agents do not understand the 303 status. When interoperability with such clients is a concern, the 302 status code may be used instead, since most user agents react to a 302 response as described here for 303. 10.3.5 304 Not Modified If the client has performed a conditional GET request and access is allowed, but the document has not been modified, the server SHOULD respond with this status code. The 304 response MUST NOT contain a message-body, and thus is always terminated by the first empty line after the header fields. The response MUST include the following header fields: - Date, unless its omission is required by section 14.18.1 If a clockless origin server obeys these rules, and proxies and clients add their own Date to any response received without one (as already specified by [RFC 2068], section 14.19), caches will operate correctly. - ETag and/or Content-Location, if the header would have been sent in a 200 response to the same request - Expires, Cache-Control, and/or Vary, if the field-value might differ from that sent in any previous response for the same variant If the conditional GET used a strong cache validator (see section 13.3.3), the response SHOULD NOT include other entity-headers. Otherwise (i.e., the conditional GET used a weak validator), the response MUST NOT include other entity-headers; this prevents inconsistencies between cached entity-bodies and updated headers. If a 304 response indicates an entity not currently cached, then the cache MUST disregard the response and repeat the request without the conditional. If a cache uses a received 304 response to update a cache entry, the cache MUST update the entry to reflect any new field values given in the response. 10.3.6 305 Use Proxy The requested resource MUST be accessed through the proxy given by the Location field. The Location field gives the URI of the proxy. The recipient is expected to repeat this single request via the proxy. 305 responses MUST only be generated by origin servers. Note: RFC 2068 was not clear that 305 was intended to redirect a single request, and to be generated by origin servers only. Not observing these limitations has significant security consequences. 10.3.7 306 (Unused) The 306 status code was used in a previous version of the specification, is no longer used, and the code is reserved. 10.3.8 307 Temporary Redirect The requested resource resides temporarily under a different URI. Since the redirection MAY be altered on occasion, the client SHOULD continue to use the Request-URI for future requests. This response is only cacheable if indicated by a Cache-Control or Expires header field. The temporary URI SHOULD be given by the Location field in the response. I'm using 302 for now, until I find THE correct answer.

• Problems with contenteditable in Firefox

  Hello, I am working on a Javascript WYSIWYG editor in Firefox. I am using a div with the contenteditable attribute set to true in order to accomplish this (I cannot use a contenteditable iframe for this particular project). This contenteditable div is nested in another div that is not contenteditable. I am encountering the following two problems when using execCommand to apply formatting, including font style and size, as well as bold, italic, and underline: When all text in the div is selected, execCommand simply does not work. execCommand works fine when only part of the text is selected, but does nothing when all of the text is selected. Applying formatting with no text selected yields unexpected results. For example, when calling execCommand('bold') with no text selected and then typing results in bold text being typed until a spacebar is inserted, at which point the bold formatting is lost (until another space is inserted, interestingly enough; then the text becomes bold again). To see what I mean, please try running the following HTML code in Firefox 3: <html> <head><title></title></head> <body> <button onClick="execCommand('bold', false, null);">Bold</button> <div style="width: 300px; border: 1px solid #000000;"> <div contenteditable="true">Some editable text</div> </div> </body> </html> Please try the following: Select the word "Some" only. Click the Bold button. This will make the text bold, as expected. Select the entire phrase "Some editable text" (either manually or using CTRL-A). Click the Bold button. Nothing happens. This demonstrates the first bug shown above. Hit the backspace key to clear the div. Click the Bold button and begin typing. Type a few words with spaces. This will demonstrate the second bug. Any ideas on what could be causing these problems and how to work around them would be greatly appreciated!

• What is a typical scenario for and end-user reports design?

  Hello! I'm wondering what would be the typical scenario for using an end-user report designer. What I'm thinking of is to have a base report with all the columns that I can have, also with a basic view of the report (formatting, order of columns, etc.) and then let the user to change that format and order, take out or add (from the available columns) data to it, etc. Is that a common way to address what is called end-user designer for reports or I'm off track? I know it depends on the user (if it's someone that can handle SQL or not for example), but is it common to have a scenario where the user can build everthing from the sql query to the formatting?   I'm attempting to copy cells, one at a time, from an Excel 2003 (or 2007) spreadsheet to a Word 2003 (or 2007) table. I'd like the code to be version-agnostic, and so am using late binding. The formatting of the contents of the Excel cell, such as color, underline, strike-through, needs to be preserved. My approach is to use a Word doc as a template. It has a table at the top which I can copy to the end of the doc, add rows as needed, and fill in the word table cells with the data from the excel spreadsheet. Unfortunately, all the formatting disappears. All I get is the text itself.

• What is a good Javascript RDFa parser implementation?

  I am looking to implement a client side RDFa based formatting for a web application. This would be similar to Mark Birbeck's ubiquity-rdfa project. Mark's project looks fantastic but it has at least two drawbacks: It is slow. Adding RDFa formatting to a simple page causes a noticeable delay in page loading. It is complex. The ubiquity-rdfa project makes use of the w3c fresnel specification which is complex way to add simple annotations to client markup. I am looking for a lighter weight way of adding annotations through client code and I don't mind doing some work to get it. What I would like is a fast and reliable Javascript RDFa parser. Some implementations that I have found include: W3C RDFa bookmarklet parser Elias Torres RDFa extractor I am interested to know if you would recommend one of these, or another, RDFa Javascript implementation. • Wordpress TinyMCE keeps it clean, how?

  I've noticed that the latest version of TinyMCE on Wordpress manages text in a very 'clean' way. Pasting from MS-Word it strips out all html text blocks, like <p>'s, and shows the text cleared of any odd formatting preserving only links, bolds and underlines. On top of that the source code format is very clear. No <br />'s everywhere. You only see \n's and the expected <strong><u><i> tags. I've been messing up with TinyMCE configuration files for some time with little success. I did manage to get all formatting removed. I can't, however, put TinyMCE to display the \n's as <br />'s lie Wordpress does it. Tried preformatted : true with no success whatsoever. Has anyone here been able to do it? • A reasonable way to add attributes to an xml root element.

  The function "WriteStartElement" does not return anything. I find this a little bizzare. So up until now I have been doing it like this. XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument(); XmlTextWriter xmlWriter = new XmlTextWriter(m_targetFilePath, System.Text.Encoding.UTF8); xmlWriter.Formatting = Formatting.Indented; xmlWriter.WriteProcessingInstruction("xml", "version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'"); xmlWriter.WriteStartElement("client"); xmlWriter.Close(); xmlDoc.Load(m_targetFilePath); XmlElement root = xmlDoc.DocumentElement; Saving the doc, then reloading it to get hold of the start element so i can write attributes to it. Does anybody know the correct way of doing this because I'm pretty sure what I'm doing isn't right. I tried to use xmlWriter.AppendChild() but it doesnt seem to write out anything. :(

• log4j: Change format of loggers configured in another library.

  Using clojure, I've been able to successfully setup log4j very simply by using this log4j.properties file, and including log4j in my classpath. # BEGIN log4j.properties log4j.appender.STDOUT=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender log4j.appender.STDOUT.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.STDOUT.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{MMdd HHmmss SSS} %5p %c [%t] %m\n log4j.rootLogger=DEBUG, STDOUT Then after :use'ing clojure.contrib.logging, I'm able to print a statement with the desired formatting as expected like so: (info "About to print this") (debug "This is debug-level") My question is how to achieve a consistent formatting for logging statements made from loggers configured in other libraries. I thought I could find existing loggers using org.apache.log4j.LogManager.getCurrentLoggers() and change the PatternLayouts there, but I'm not able to iterate over that enumeration in clojure, as I get the following error: Dont know how to create ISeq from: java.util.Vector$1 I assume this is possible somehow, and probably very simply. • XmlDocument.WriteTo truncates resultant file

  Trying to serialize an XmlDocument to file. The XmlDocument is rather large; however, in the debugger I can see that the InnerXml property has all of the XML blob in it -- it's not truncated there. Here's the code that writes my XmlDocument object to file: // Write that string to a file. var fileStream = new FileStream("AdditionalData.xml", FileMode.OpenOrCreate, FileAccess.Write); xmlDocument.WriteTo(new XmlTextWriter(fileStream, Encoding.UTF8) {Formatting = Formatting.Indented}); fileStream.Close(); The file that's produced here only writes out to line like 5,760 -- it's actually truncated in the middle of a tag! Anyone have any ideas why this would truncate here?

• SSRS default renderer strips html tags

  For TFS task work item, I copy a table from ms word 2003/2007 document and paste it into the description field (supports rich text). When the task item is saved, correct formatting is saved in TFS database table. But when the same data is displayed in a SSRs report (through report manager) the formatting is lost. Probably the ssrs rendering engine is stripping off the tags. I have the "HTML-Interpret HTML tags as styles" enabled for the report field. It will be of great help if someone can provide more information on this issue and how it can be handled. Thanks.

• Layout issue regarding a JQuery smoothDivScroll

  Hi all. I have been scratching my head for a while on this one. I dont really play around with HTML formatting that often. I have a smoothDivScroll using JQuery (http://maaki.com/thomas/SmoothDivScroll/) to scroll through dynamically generated images. What I want it for, is to have multiple small images lined up right next to each other, and each image has a section of writting underneath. about 25 images, 140px width each in a 7560px span. I acheived this great by putting a table inside the div, and each image inside a<td>.This works problem i have, is that i need the slider to start from the furthest RIGHT image, and slide automatically left. This is acheived by (if you look at the link above) - startAtElementId: But if I am using a table inside the div, it is taking the TABLE as a element and not the TD... so it doesnt work. I know this because if I change every image to be inside tables (i.e 25 tables), it works... but obviously then the formatting is not how I want. Can anyone think of a way I can use this slider (modifications to the js code or not), with 25 images that NEED to be right next to each other, no gap. I guess this is more of a formatting question, than about the slider.   I am trying to create a database field merge into a document (rtf) using php i.e if I have a document that starts Dear Sir, Customer Name: [customer_name], Date of order: [order_date] After retrieving the appropriate database record I can use a simple search and replace to insert the database field into the right place. So far so good. I would however like to have a little more control over the data before it is replaced. For example I may wish to Title Case it, or convert a delimited string into a list with carriage returns. I would therefore like to be able to add extra formatting commands to the field to be replaced. e.g. Dear Sir, Customer Name: [customer_name, TC], Date of order: [order_date, Y/M/D] There may be more than one formatting command per field. Is there a way that I can now search for these strings? The format of the strings is not set in stone, so if I have to change the format then I can. Any suggestions appreciated.

• How Do You Parse Column Data ?

  I am trying to parse a file generated by LGA Tracon that lists the position data for aircraft over a given time frame. The data of interest starts with TRACKING DATA and ends with SST and there are thousands of entries per file.   In a C# Winform application (3.5) there are numerous forms each with different listview controls. While each listview control uses different datasets the basic formatting of each remains the same. Basic formatting takes this form: /* appearance */ this.lstA.View = View.Details; this.lstA.AllowColumnReorder = true; this.lstA.CheckBoxes = false; this.lstA.FullRowSelect = true; this.lstA.GridLines = false; this.lstA.Sorting = SortOrder.Ascending; What I would like to do is create a class that can be used to set the initial format of the listview. • Why is this consider bad practice? or is it? (ASP.Net)

  Would this code be considered bad practice: <div id="sidebar"> <% =DisplayMeetings(12) %> </div> This is a snippet of code from the default.aspx of a small web app I have worked on. It works perfectly well, runs very fast, but as always, I am aware of the fact that just because it works, doesn't mean it is OK. Basically, the DisplayMeetings subroutine outputs a bunch of formatted HTML (an unordered list actually), with no formatting, just the requisite html, and then my CSS performs all the necessary formatting. The data for generating the list comes from an SQL server database (the parameter controls how many rows to return) and I am using stored procedures and datareader for fast access. This keeps my front-end extraordinary simple and clean, imho, and lets me do all the work in VB or C# in a separate module. I could of course use a databound repeater (and probably 6 or more other methods) of accomplishing the same thing, but are they any better? Other than loosing the design-time features of VS2010?

  I am creating a string that is a list of comma-delimitted values by looping through the selections in a CheckBoxList. I am able to display this value, so I know that it is creating what I expect. I am attempting to pass this list to an IN statment in a SELECT query: SelectCommand="SELECT ThisDate, DATEPART(dw, ThisDate) AS Expr1 FROM fbCalendar WHERE (ThisDate &gt;= @ThisDate) AND (ThisDate &lt;= @ThisDate2) AND (DATEPART(dw, ThisDate) IN (@TheseDays))" <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="Label1" Name="TheseDays" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /> This works fine as long as there is only a single item selected, but selecting a second item fails with the message: Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value '4,5' to data type int. However, I do not understand when this would be converted to an INT. I have tried many different formatting attempts (such as encapsulating the string in parenthesis (e.g. "(4,5)" ) for the SELECT query, but I have yet to find the right one to make this work. It seems like formatting is the problem, but perhaps I am missing something else.
