  i'm a software engineer and have been building Google App Engine apps with Python for about a year. I have a pretty good familiarity with the main concepts: web app framework, modeling, queues, memcache, django templates, etc. Where I think I'm lacking is in methodology. Architecting the app, using git for versioning, designing an writing unit tests. I'm totally convinced to incorporate these practices in my development style, and have started reading up on them. However I've learned that I'm a much faster learner when I have someone experienced to ask questions to and interact with. IRC channels and forums like stack overflow are great. But sometimes you want something more dynamic that produces results faster. So my question is how can a person find an experienced engineer that is familiar with the technologies he uses and that is willing to give them a couple of hours of Skype coaching sessions per week in return for an hourly fee...

• Deferred Rendering With Diffuse,Specular, and Normal maps

  I have been reading up on deferred rendering and I am trying to implement a renderer using the Sponza atrium model, which can be found here, as my sandbox.Note I am also using OpenGL 3.3 and GLSL. I am loading the model from a Wavefront OBJ file using Assimp. I extract all geometry information including tangents and bitangents. For all the aiMaterials,I extract the following information which essentially comes from the sponza.mtl file. Ambient/Diffuse/Specular/Emissive Reflectivity Coefficients(Ka,Kd,Ks,Ke) Shininess Diffuse Map Specular Map Normal Map I understand that I must render vertex attributes such as position ,normals,texture coordinates to textures as well as depth for the second render pass. A lot of resources mention putting colour information into a g-buffer in the initial render pass but do you not require the diffuse,specular and normal maps and therefore lights to determine the fragment colour? I know that doesnt make since sense because lighting should be done in the second render pass. In terms of normal mapping, do you essentially just pass the tangent,bitangents, and normals into g-buffers and then construct the tangent matrix and apply it to the sampled normal from the normal map. Ultimately, I would like to know how to incorporate this material information into my deferred renderer.

  For retailers the move to mobile has been obvious.  More and more consumers are interacting with retailers, both online and in the store, using their mobile devices.  Retailers are quick to invest in both consumer facing mobile apps as well as ones to equip employees.  But when I talk to retailers about social, the value isn't as clear-cut.  Intuitively, retailers know that better relationships with customers will result in higher sales, but the trip to get there has many paths. The interesting thing about social media is that it has the potential to permeate all parts of the business.  Obviously it works well for marketing, but it also has a place with recruiting, knowledge management, trend analysis, and employee collaboration.  Information gathered from social media can enhance existing processes like assortment planning, product development, space planning, promotion planning, and replenishment.  Letting the customer influence each of these areas helps align the experience. One of the things holding retailers back is the lack of consistent and integrated tools to manage social media and make sense of the huge amounts of data.  To that end Oracle has been aggressively acquiring in the space, as depicted in the infographic below.  Soon, social will get the same level of investment as mobile. • Using EC2 instance as main development platform

  My problem I am working as a consultant for various companies. Each company provides me with a laptop where with their software on and I also have my own where I have my development environment. I tend to buy a new laptop every second year and find myself spending lots of time configuring and installing software. I also sometimes spend a lot of time waiting for my laptop to process things. To solve all these issues, I am now considering using EC2 (running windows instances) as my main development platform and just access this from any PC I happen to be at. I calculated that running the High-CPU On-Demand Instances (medium) for 8 hours a day for a year costs me 580$, which is acceptable. I imagine that when I approach the workplace each day, I will make a single click my phone to fire up the instance, so it is ready when I get to work. I should have different icons on my phone to fire up the various instance types. The same software should of course automatically be loaded on the various hardware (sometimes I would even need their instance with 68.4 GB of memory). Another advantage is that if I am having a specific problem with my instance, I could fire up another instance and have someone look into the problem and update the image. My question: Does anyone have experience with such a setup on EC2? What kind of problems do you forsee?

• Ubuntu 12.04 desktop crash [closed]

  12.04 is stable under a light load, but not under intensive use of Gaussian 09 vB1. Looks like a heating issue, but psensor says that all is well on 32-cores @56C. Similar results for 64 cores. Machine shuts down after 2-3h. Syslog shows shut down. Whoopsie crash reporter sends in report. After 259 updates on the weekend, I am left wondering what the heck is wrong with this release? My answer would be "EVERYTHING!". Can someone help me do some systematic checks on this OS and hardware.

• Why must I restart for HDMI audio?

  I have a System76 Lemur Ultra laptop, which has an HDMI port. When I plug in the HDMI cable, it is recognized immediately for video, but not for audio, i.e., it does not show up in the Output tab of the Sound Settings dialog. However, if I do a full restart with the cable plugged in, then it does show up and can be selected. I've also discovered that manually killing and restarting pulseaudio with the HDMI plugged in will force it to be recognized as an available audio output. So my question is, what is broken here? I've thought about writing a bug in launchpad, but I don't know which component is malfunctioning. Is it the kernel? ALSA? Pulse Audio? Something else? By the way, the same bug seems to exist in reverse, namely if I disconnect the HDMI, it is still listed in the Output tab until I again restart the OS. This is 12.04 LTS.

• How do I install the Intel Graphics driver in my system?

  Can someone help me out and explain or point me in the right direction on how to check video drivers and see if my video card running okay? I had 10.04 installed on my Thinkpad r61 with Compiz Manager and life was great, until the machine took water damage. I bought an ASUS (X54H) since and am trying out 12.04, but the desktop just doesn't look right. I always struggled with video driver installation. There are no proprietary drivers available in the hardware manager. When I run lspci | grep VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I will greatly appreciate your help. I want to use Linux more, but like I said video drivers appear to be my biggest concern. I have also tried 12.04 on my desktop PC, but again failed to configure video card, so switched back to Windows 7.

• What is wrong with Unix/linux

  This is a genuine question motivated by Ideal Operating System When I moved from DOS to Linux in the late 90s it was an eye opener for me. Long file names, arbitrarily many extensions etc... Now I look at Linux and Unix and see all sorts of issues. Here are things I see which could be fixed. Too much depends on root, and rootly powers cannot be voluntarily delegated over several users. (I would love to give up my power to manager printers and delegate the job to another account) File permissions are very limited, and there is not much metadata to go with files. The "everything is a file" metaphor is not true, Plan 9 gets it right(er).

  Anonymous delegates are great, they elimiante the need for lots of small classes that just pass values around, however care needs to be taken when using them, as they are not automatically unhooked when the function you created them in returns. In fact after it returns there is no way to unhook them. • Wordpress .htaccess preventing subfolder access

  This is sort of a goofy setup, but it's not in my power to reconfigure it at this time. I'm running in a shared hosting environment. The domain is example.com. This is an add-on domain on the host side with example.com being redirected to the www/example.com sub-directory. That directory houses a standard Wordpress site which acts as the main site when you visit example.com. That subdirectory is /tracker. My problem is that when I attempt to browse to example.com/tracker, I get a 404 from Wordpress because perma links are on. What I think I need is a rewrite rule in the Wordpress .htaccess file that short circuits the existing rewrite rules and permits example.com/tracker to work independently of the Wordpress install. Or a rewrite rule at the root level that short circuits the redirect to the /example.com directory in the first place. Not sure how well I explained that so here's a summary. The www/ directory structure: example.com/ tracker/ Add on domain of www.example.com redirecting to the /example.com directory with Wordpress and a tracker/ directory running CakePHP which I would like to access via www.example.com/tracker. • How do I share different files in a git repo with different people?

  In a single directory with a Git root folder, I have a bunch of files. I am working on one of those files, X.py, with my friend Alice. The other files I am working on with other people. I want Alice (and everyone else) to have access to X.py. I want Alice to only have access to X.py though. How can I achieve this with Git? Is there a way I can split a directory into two repos? That sounds rather cumbersome. Maybe I could add a remote repo that Alice can access containing X.py?

• Resize broswer window below 400px on OS X

  Resizing Firefox windows (by dragging) works fine, up until the window is about 400 px wide, at which point the width of the web page content cease to follow the window with. I'm pretty sure it's not a CSS issue, and the same thing goes for Chrome and Safari as well (they won't even let me resize the window < 400 px wide). I can't understand where this limitation comes from. Is it a setting in the browser? A bug? A limitation of the OS?

• Seeking questions about creating Microsoft Live Labs Pivot collections

  I've spent the past 3 weeks working a lot with Pivot from Microsoft Live Labs (http://getpivot.com/).  Pivot is a tool that allows you to visually explore data. Its an interesting take on visual data mining. Anyway, I've been writing a lot of code that creates a hierarchy of Pivot collections, where one item in the collection drills down into an entirly new collection. The dev community around Pivot is still very young, so there isnt much tribal knowledge built up yet.  I've spent a lot of time trying to get things to work through trial and error, as well as digging around in Reflector.  But I've finally got a framework built for programatically creating DeepZoom images, Pivot collections, Sparse Images, etc.   If anyone has any questions, or suggestions on a post topic, leave a comment and I'll try and answer your question.

  I previously blogged about my search for a 17” 1920x1200 laptop. The only one I could find was a 17” MacBook Pro, which has been an excellent machine for running Windows and SQL Server. It is no longer made. Apple has a few refurbished ones available. Just be sure to get a matte display if you buy one. If you want WUXGA resolution or better in a laptop, your only off the shelf option is now the 15” MacBook Pro with the Retina display, which is 2880x1800. • several subdomains pointing to one folder. fasthosts problem

  I have a asp.net website (e.g. www.website.com). The idea is that you will go to the url 'yourname.website.com' and my site will request the name from the sub domain, process it and change the content accordingly. So, I purchased my fasthosts hosting package and created a sub domain which points to a folder within my site. e.g. 'www.website.com/folder'. However, when i now go to the url 'yourname.website.com' it is immediately redirected to 'website.com/folder'. this means I cannot request the subdomain from the url because it has been lost. I have tried contacting these guys but they don't understand and keep going on about some sort of redirect script (although i don't see how any further redirects can solve my problem). Is there something I am missing here? Any suggests or help would be much appreciated!

One of the main initiatives has been an Excel to OWB ‘one click ETL’ utility, which looks to have had a fair amount of code added, there is an example but its kinda light on documentation, but does look like it covers quite a lot. One of the nice things about SourceForge is that you can peek into the statistics and see what kind of activity has gone on, from last August there have been a bunch of downloads with a big peak last November… Another utility that is there is one to generate OMB from a mapping definition, a bunch of useful stuff there - http://sourceforge.net/projects/owbland/files/

• How to install hardware drivers for my laptop

  Everytime I change the OS I usually format my laptop. It is an HP tx-2 Touchsmart. It has a touchscreen and additional hardware that isn't working (i.e. volume control buttons and the network discovery) If I was on windows I would just download the hardware drivers from the HP website. How do I go about installing the software for the built-in hardware of my laptop? I am new to the community and I really want to get this computer working like it used to, to get the full Ubuntu experience. Please direct me, thank you.
