• Is there any way to get a windows application to always start on "Monitor n"?

  The specific app I'm having a problem with is Firefox but I'd like a generic solution. I have 2 monitors the larger is my main monitor. I would like to be able to tell windows that every time I start app 'X' I want it too start in my main monitor and ideally have it start app 'Y' in my secondary monitor. And I want it to do this regardless of witch monitor the app was when it was last used. Does anyone know of a tool or windows-tweak to make this possible?

• USB to DVI adapter to get around two monitor limit of my graphics card?

  My graphics card is an nVidia GTS 450 which will only run two monitors at a time, but I'd like to add a third one. Will I be able to do that using a USB to DVI adapter or would the limit still be there? Also I've been told the video quality is really bad with these adapters, so is the quality of the video output by these adapters okay for things like web browsing and working on office thing? And is it worth the $60 or would I be better off just buying a cheep second card?

  I got 3 display working in Linux. I have set it up so I have Xinerama and 3 different X sessions. So my 3 displays are not all the same size, two are 1680x1050 and then the other which is between the two is 2560x1600. So my issue is when I chose span, even if the image is larger than all 3 resolutions combined, the center monitor has bars at the top and the bottom because span scales the image it seems. Is there a way if I bypass the gui to have an image span all three monitors but with no scaling? Urgent! Please help! ;-)

  Possible Duplicate: Recover Windows Opening Off Screen? I'm working with a HP Elitebook 8460p with Windows 8 using always 2 Monitors connected. And some Programs I'm always opening on the second screen (which windows does automatically). But now the problem: When the screens aren't connected (when I'm at home), some programs still open on the second screen (which does not exist anymore) and it's just not possible to move them to the main (only!) screen!   OS: Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Microsoft Windows 7 My laptop is plugged to a docking station that supports dual monitors, which I use extensively. I have windows placed where I want them. All is well and predictable with this setup until I un-dock. The moment I un-dock all windows that I placed in the secondary monitor piles up in the primary monitor and it is an unholy mess. So, I am looking for a solution where if I use virtual desktops, one of them can be mapped to a monitor and when un-docked what was there in the secondary monitor stays in a virtual desktop. Do you folks know of a tool or workaround that can address my quandary?

• Third monitor randomly defaults to 640 x 480 on startup

  I purchased a PowerColor HD 5770 video card so I could get a third monitor working. I have two widescreen monitors, one attached via HDMI and the other attached via DVI. My third monitor is attached from DisplayPort to VGA (using a passive connector like this one) The third monitor is a 19" Hyundai L90D. I was unable to find any Windows 7 (or Vista for that matter) drivers for the monitor, so it's stuck with "Generic Non-PNP Monitor". It's native resolution is 1280 x 1024. Randomly Windows will boot up in the correct native res, but sometimes it boots up in 640 x 480 res. When it does boot up into 640 x 480 res, the screen resolution slider is stuck and I cannot slide it back to 1280 x 1024. I cannot find a pattern for when or why it will do this, I've tried rebooting five or six times in a row at times to get it to boot into native res, but this doesn't always work.

• Dual boot nt4 and windows 98

  I am trying to dual boot nt4 and windows 98 se (don't laugh - old computer). I have seen Microsoft's instructions for doing this, but it limits windows 98 to have a Fat16 partition (NT4's NTLDR doesn't understand FAT32) and therefore only 2GB of disk space. I really need it to have more than that. I started with Win 98 (on the 1st partition), repartitioned the disk, then added NT4 on the 2nd partition. NT4 took over the bootloader (as expected), so NT4 boots, but Win 98 doesn't. Right now I am working in VMWare so I can use nonpersistent hard drives (IDE like the real computer) to recover from errors easily. I've tried using XPs NTLDR using the instructions here: http://www.nu2.nu/fixnt4/ , but I got weird errors from NT4 and it never really worked. If XP's NTLDR would work, that should be able to boot both OSes. I've also tried using GRUB. In theory that should work. In fact when booting from super grub disk, it does. But as soon as I install grub to disk, Win 98 boots, but NT 4 blue screens at boot with a 0x0000007b inaccessible_boot_device error (that can be alot of things see MS kb 822051). The incantation I'm using for GRUB 1 is rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 boot So, anybody have some suggestions?

• Changing dual-monitor settings without closing the laptop lid on OS X

  I have a Unibody MacBook hooked up to an external display. By default when I boot up, the system will go to dual-monitor mode. I want to use only the external display. The Apple supplied solution to this problem is to close the lid of the laptop which puts the machine into sleep mode and then move the mouse around to wake it up again. Because the machine is being woken up with the lid closed, when the displays are detected the system finds only the external. After the system is functional again, you can open the lid if you want and the laptop screen will be non-functional until you either tell the system to detect displays from the system preferences or you turn off the external display. Every time I want to use only the external display, I must reach my hand over to close the lid, wait for the machine to sleep, jigger the mouse, wait for the machine to wake up, and finally open the lid again because I don't want the machine to overheat. I feel that this is very stupid to have to do. Why is there no button or menu option that says "don't use this screen"? Is there any third-party software way to change the screen setup that does not involve physically closing the lid and playing a game of "are you sleeping" in order to switch such a simple software setting? We are in the 21st Century and honestly this is childish.

• Dual boot windows 8 pro and windows 7 on XPS 8500 Special Edition

  I am trying to install a dual boot with windows 7 premium and windows 8 Pro on an XPS 8500 special edition. I created a new primary partition on my C: drive, inserted the windows 8 install disk, and rebooted my computer from DVD. I select custom install and the dialog box saying "Where do you want to install windows at?" pops up but none of my drives are listed. Please help me determine what is going on. I don't understand why none of my drives are showing up on this menu. Not even the original drive. When I go to load driver and click on the partition I created it tells me "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK." resolved above issue by running setup from the source folder on the install disk instead of booting from DVD. Was able to locate my new partition and start install. It completes the first step of "Copying windows files" just fine but then on the next step "Getting files ready for installation" my computer restarts and attempts to load windows 8 but keeps telling me my pc needs to restart. This keeps going on in an infinite boot loop. Please help, this has been a nightmare!

• Share Firefox/Thnderbird data between W7 and Linux Mint 12 in dual boot computer

  I've just set up my laptop (where I had running only W7) with a dual boot to run Linux Mint 12 as well. I have a "Data" partition (apart from the required partitions for W7 and Linux) where I store pretty much everything that isn't software installations (music, videos, project files, etc). I seem to be able to access that NTFS partition totally fine from Mint (like I've always done with W7), which is cool because I can access all that stuff regardless of which OS I'm using. I would like to know if it's possible (and how) to go one step further and share programs data between the two OS. One example would be my Firefox and Thunderbird data. For example, in Firefox share my bookmarks (and if I could share history, autocomplete and all that stuff, that would be awesome). In thunderbird, be able to share my mail and configuration, seeing the same inbox, folders, message rules, etc... So if I receive/send an email from W7 and later switch to Mint, I can see that email as it had been received/sent from Mint, and vice versa. Is this even possible? Or am I asking for too much convenience? If it's possible, any clues on how to set it all up?

• USB Harddisk not working on dual boot windows7/8

  Yesterday I installed Windows 8 on a machine that already had Windows 7. They are on dual boot and both systems work fine. The problem is that inserting a USB hard disk in either system does nothing. If I connect a USB mouse or mobile phone, they work fine, so the USB plugs are active/working and the USB hard drives that I am trying to connect work on my other laptop just fine. I have tried to uninstall all USB-related items in Device Manager and let them reinstall upon restart, but that didn't help. The USB drive does not show up in disk management either. The strange thing is that it is exactly the same situation on both windows. USB mice etc. work just fine and USB hard drives do not. Any ideas on solving this problem would be great. ...Don't know if it is important, but this is a Toshiba Tecra R950 Laptop. EDIT: I have found out that my other USB HD (Western Digital) works on this laptop, but for my StoreJet Transcend and Adata "something" does not work. All three work on another Windows 7 laptop. Sizewise the WD is in the middle at 400 GB. The StoreJet is 640 GB and the Adata is 200 GB.

  This is in planning, so if I've got the strategy wrong, please let me know. There are multiple questions here, but I think they all degenerate to the same answers. The hardware is a laptop with a single SSD. I'm trying to not lose the performance of the SSD. I plan a native dual booting Windows (plus cygwin) and Linux machine which is my BYOD and represents the development environment. I keep the codebase on a shared partition (though sometimes this is an external thunderbolt SSD) which can be natively "mounted" by whichever OS is in operation. I boot into one or the other environments depending on the task in hand. Sometime I have to develop with windows tools, but generally, Linux is my preferred development environment. It would be ideal if I could VM the other OS and run either in either. I'm going to assume, because I've not found a sensible VM based solution, that I have get samba involved to share the code partition between VMs. Is this going to blow my SSD performance in the VM? The client also supplies me with a VM for the target environment, usually linux. This is not often suited to development and is used for testing only. I normally keep two copies of this, one as a sandbox and one which I deploy to using the client's preferred method. I keep these VM snapshots on the shared partition. The latter is interacted with over the network and so has no disk sharing requirements. However, it would be useful for the sandbox to be able to "mount" the code base from the natively running OS. Is this samba or nfs again, depending on the native OS? Am I missing a trick which allows this to all work smoothly with all four environments running at once without loosing the SSD performance?

• Weird glitches on Intel iGPU

  I have a weird problem that I can't manage to describe in one word, so I'm having trouble searching for a solution. My monitors sometimes go black for a tenth of a second. Other times, they show the image shifted a few centimeters to the left or to the right. This happens on both of my monitors, but not necessarily at the same time. I would say it happens about once a minute, unless under heavy load, in which case it can happen every second or so. Interestingly, heavy CPU/memory usage can also cause this, not just heavy GPU usage. This only happens when they are both at 1920x1080, not when one of them, or both, are at a lower resolution. It also happens when they are in mirrored mode instead of extended desktop mode. My GPU is obviously not at full clock speed most of the time: this happens at 350 MHz as well as at 1200 MHz. So it doesn't seem like a matter of too little performance. I'm not seeing any traditional artefacts, even when I use MSI Kombustor, only this kind of full-screen glitches. CPU stressing software isn't reporting any issues either. I'm thinking maybe the connection between my CPU and my PCH isn't fast enough, but I can't find anyone with the same problem to confirm that. I'd rather not invest in a discrete GPU without being certain it will fix something. Does anyone know how to search for this, or even better, does anyone have a solution? My full specs are below. • Second CPU missing of Dual Core

  My Lenovo T61 has a dual core CPU. I just noticed that under Ubuntu 10.10 only one CPU is recognized. I know that once both CPUs worked. Not sure since when the second CPU is missing. Maybe since the last kernel update. Currently I am using linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic (for x86_64). What can I do to enable the second CPU again? • Can I drive two external screens from an 'Alu' iMac?

  I've got a 24" 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's about 18 months old, though I can't specifically remember when I bought it. It has a Displayport Mini-DVI socket on the back, and currently I have that linked to a DVI adaptor driving a Philips 20" widescreen monitor in portrait mode (awesome for browsing). I have another, identical Philips monitor and wondered if there was a way of connecting that to the iMac too. Is there such a thing as a DisplayPort Mini-DVI to dual-DVIs adaptor? Can this iMac's graphics card even drive such a set-up? The graphics chipset in the iMac is reported as ATI Radeon HS2600, 256 MB. The main iMac display is 1920x1200 and the Philips display is 1050x1680 (@60Hz, rotated 90 degrees). The third screen would be another 1050x1680 and ideally I'd have it portrait again, too. EDIT: Please let this question stand - it's not a dupe. The current Mac laptops use 'Mini Displayport' connectors, which are not the same as DisplayPort Mini-DVI connectors.

All resolutions are effected from 800x600 all the way up to the TVs native 1360x768. I have tried with SLI on and off and have PhysX turned off as well as I thought that might have an effect. I am running Windows XP 64-bit SP2 DirectX ver 9.0c Nvidia driver version 181.22 Any other information please let me know. Thanks in advance.

• Can I use an nVidia Geforce 9600GT for triple-monitor?

  My work PC has (as you can guess from the title) a single Geforce 9600GT card. According to the spec page for this card, both DVI ports are Dual-Link DVI. Both are currently in use on Dell 19" 1280x1024 screens. I'm running Windows 7, with Aero enabled, for what that's worth. What I'm wondering is if I can use a standard DVI splitter cable to drive a third screen from one of the ports -- specifically a Samsung 22" 1680x1050. I'm really outgrowing the two-screen setup, and am strongly considering bringing in my home monitor (which is almost never used) to bolster my usable space. If I can't, then my alternative is to replace one of these Dells with that Samsung, to give me at least a "little" more space. (Before you ask, there's probably no chance I can get my company to spring for a second video card and third monitor. Even if I could, it would not be politically expedient, as a number of my other coworkers are already pretty jealous at my setup.)

  I have a dual display setup with my laptop (Dell, with integrated graphics, WinXP). The problem is that whenever I hook up the laptop to the monitor I have to go to Graphics Properties (Intel Graphics Media Driver for Mobile) and set the display resolution, window position, etc. Note that this screen is different than the built-in one you usually see in WinXP. 1) Is there an app that can save display settings properly so they will come back when I dock again? 2) Barring this, run a script or a macro to automatically set up the display the way I want it. 3) Or, can I write a .Net program that does this for me? Extra points if there is an Open source app that can do this.

• Can I set Windows default second-monitor behaviour to "Extend these displays"?

  I travel to multiple offices (and multiple desks in those offices), and whenever possible I plug an external monitor into my laptop. Whenever I plug in a monitor I haven't used before, Windows defaults to "Duplicate these displays" - which messes up the arrangement of icons on my desktop if the external monitor is a different shape from my laptop's monitor. I then select "Extend these displays", and my laptop screen returns to its original shape - but my icons don't go back to their original arrangement. Grrrrr. Fast-forward a few days or weeks; I've got my icons arranged so I can find stuff again - then I go to a new office and it starts all over again. I'm tired of this. Is it possible to make "Extend these displays" the default behavior? I'm using Windows 8 x64 Home Premium, but I had the same complaint under Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. (Prior to that, I hadn't discovered the joy of dual displays. Ah, the time I wasted...)

• How to disable monitor auto detection in Windows 7?

  I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with a dual monitor setup with an NVIDIA 7950 GT graphics card. One monitor is dedicated to this machine and the other monitor is connected to a DVI KVM switch. When I switch to my other computer, Windows 7 disables the monitor. However, when I switch back it does not re-enable the monitor. The only circumstance that automatically re-enables the second monitor is when I switch back after Windows has put the monitors into power save mode. I am continually having to bring up the NVIDIA control panel to have it re-enable the monitor. Under Windows XP I would just disable the NVIDIA service to prevent it from auto-detecting the monitor (which doesn't solve the problem under Win7), and in Vista there was a registry hack that would prevent this. It looks as though that has been removed in Windows 7. I have found similar questions posted on this site, but nothing that matches my problem exactly. • How can I get Windows 7 to work with two Nvidia graphics cards with different drivers?

  This is similar to this question, but I am using more similar cards with Windows 7. I just purchased a Zotac Nvidia GeForce 7200 GS. I have a motherboard with two PCI Express x16 slots. There is already an MSI Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS being used as the primary card, driving two LCD monitors. I would like the Zotac to output to a TV via DVI-out. Unfortunately, when Windows detects the Zotac and installs its drivers, or I manually install them, Windows stops being able to boot up. If I remove them and re-install the MSI 8800 drivers, I can boot again, but Windows can no longer see the Zotac 7200--it shows up as a yellow triangle in Device Manager. I've read conflicting reports about this. Some people claim that Windows 7 will support multiple heterogeneous graphics card drivers, as long as they are all using the same driver API ("WDDM?"). Others say that they have to be using the exact same driver, or it won't work. Others claim that you have to use the exact same card. which is it, exactly? I know I can run the MSI 8800 in SLI if I purchase another, but I don't need that kind of power--I just need HD-out to my television. I read somewhere that running two cards in SLI precludes you from using 100% of their output ports, so I'm not sure if that's an option. I suppose I could also run two MSI 8800's without SLI, but again, that's more power than I need (and more money than I'd like to spend). Also, I don't think this exact model is even manufactured anymore. Any ideas?

• Proper end of day sequence to maintain monitor config

  I've got an HP EliteBook 6930p that travels from home, where it is connected to individual cables, and work where there is a docking station. At both locations I have an external monitor as the secondary monitor and like to have the laptop screen as the primary, i.e. with the task bar. At the end of the day I close the laptop, which is supposed to set it to standby. When I get home I plug in the power cord and the external monitor cord and open the computer. When heading into work I close the computer and unplug everything. Inevitably when I open the computer at the new location the monitors are reversed, i.e. the primary, task bar display is on the external monitor and the laptop shows the secondary, even though when i click identify the laptop has the 1. I then have to disable the secondary display, switch the primary to the laptop and re-enable the secondary. I've tried locking the computer before closing and occasionally that works to keep the setup in place but not always. Any suggestions for how to keep the config in place during transport? ed
