• Junit vs TestNG

  At work we are currently still using Junit3 to run our tests. We have been considering switching over to Junit4 for new tests being written but I have been keeping an eye on TestNG for a while now. What experiences have you all had with either Junit4 or TestNG and which seems to work better for very large numbers of tests. Having flexibility in writing tests is also important to us since our functional tests cover a wide aspect and need to be written in a variety of ways to get results. Old tests will not be re-written as they do their job just fine. What I would like to see in new tests though is flexibility in the way the test can be written, natural assertions, grouping, and easily distributed test executions.

• Mac OS X, Can't start/stop MySQL via System Preferences

  I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

• USB interface barcode scanners

  Not exactly a programming question, but close. I'll try my luck anyway. The keyboard wedge barcode scanner inserts the translation device between the reader and the keyboard. Data sent through a wedge appears as if it was typed into the computer, while the keyboard itself remains fully functional. Because a computer using a keyboard wedge can't tell the difference between data that is entered by a scanning device, or data that is entered by keyboard typing, a wedge can be used to easily add barcode reading capability to an existing computer without modifying software applications. I'd like to know if all USB interface barcode scanners automatically translate digital signals from a barcode reader into keyboard strokes for a applications just like wedge or is USB different from wedge? • Css editor with certain features

  I need a light css editor with certain functions. Already downloaded and tried a few apps but still no luck, none of them fit my requirements. Actually, there is one, CssEdit (or TextMate), but unfortunately i'm a windows user... Already tried: built-in NetBeans IDE css editor (btw nice editor, the one i'm using now for css) IntelJ IDE (very good html and css editor, but using the entire ide just for this - that's crazy) ArduoCss (very buggy in win7 environment) Notepad Notepad++ (it rules, but as i said, i need something more functional for css editing) Style Master ( if i don't find anything else, probably i'll choose this one) Stylizer ( also might be my choice, but it's black interface kills me, also extremy noob-oriented, i even couldn't find a way to see the source code) Some of the features i am looking for: grouping by comments like here snippets autocomplete, if i type for instance f-s, it should recognize and expand it to "font-size" property color picker The editor must have at least the first feature that i listed above. • Simple ranking algorithm in Groovy

  I have a short groovy algorithm for assigning rankings to food based on their rating. This can be run in the groovy console. The code works perfectly, but I'm wondering if there is a more Groovy or functional way of writing the code. • Why darcs instead of git?

  Using pure functional languages can have a lot of benefits over using impure imperatives but low level systems languages will generally allow you to achieve much greater performance especially when they are imperative because it allows you to specify the exact steps in how the cpu should compute the result. If there is ever list of tools where high performance is an absolute must then I would put source version controls systems right at the top of that list and git achieves this very well but performance is not it's only advantage over many other other types of version control systems anyway. The git team are handling the unsafe c code very well and I never worry about my type system or any other features of the language it is written in so why is it that there is a lot of haskell developers that must use darcs when they will only be using the finished product?

• Help! Sikuli unit test can not run

  Hello, I couldn't run any unit tests either in the window xp? The IDE is functional. I write the simple example unit test script in the editor, as follow: def testHelloWorld(self): print("Hello World!") but no test shows up in the unit test window. When clicking the Run button of the Unit test pane, nothing happens, and the IDE window dissappears, there is no way to get back to it other than restarting the IDE. It had stucked me for several days, that would be preciate if anyone can help me solve this problem! Thank you very much. Janet

  Hi,I've just completed my freshman year in college and am majoring in EE (with a lot of interest in CS as well) . I know some Python,C/C++ and Java and also a little bit of Actionscript . I am planning to learn either Haskell or Ruby on Rails. Haskell because it is a functional programming language, and I've been really impressed by this paradigm and Ruby on Rails , as I don't know any 'web' programming language and have heard that you can develop apps in RoR very easily and quickly . Which one should I learn ? and please suggest some links / books for starting off .

• silverlight for .NET / CLR based numerical computing on osx

  I'm interested in using F# for numerical work, but my platforms are not windows based. Mono still has a significant performance penalty for programs that generate a significant amount of short-lived objects (as would be typical for functional languages). Silverlight is available on OSX. I had seen some reference indicating that assemblies compiled in the usual way could not be referenced, but not clear on the details. I'm not interested in UIs, but wondering whether could use the VM bundled with silverlight effectively for execution? I would want to be able to reference a large library of numerical models I already have in java (cross-compiled via IKVM to .NET assemblies) and a new codebase written in F#. My hope would be that the silverlight VM on OSX has good performance and can reference external assemblies and native libraries. Is this doable?

• Virtual network interface in Mac OS X

  I know that you can make a virtual network interface in Windows (see here), and in Linux it is also pretty easy with ip-aliases, but does something similar exist for Mac OS X? I've been looking for loopback adapters, virtual interfaces and couldn't find a good solution. You can create a new interface in the networking panel, based on an existing interface, but it will not act as a real fully functional interface (if the original interface is inactive, then the derived one is also inactive). This scenario is needed when working in a completely disconnected situation. Even then, it makes sense to have networking capabilities when running servers in a VMWare installation. Those virtual machines can be reached by their IP address, but not by their DNS name, even if I run a DNS server in one of those virtual machines. By configuring an interface to use the virtual DNS server, I thought I could test some DNS scenario's. Unfortunately, no interface is resolving DNS names if none of them are inactive...

• Reading Excel spreadsheets with Delphi

  I need to read from and write to Excel spreadsheets using Delphi 2010. Nothing fancy. Just reading and writing values from specific cells and ranges on different sheets. Needs to work without having Excel installed and support Excel 2007. Some things I've looked at: I've tried using ADO, which works OK for selecting everything in an entire sheet, but I haven't had much luck reading specific cells or ranges. NativeExcel looked promising, but it doesn't seem to be in active development, and they don't respond to e-mails. Axolot has a couple of products. The main product seems to be very functional, but is pricey. They have a lite version, but it doesn't support Delphi 2010. Any recommendations? Free would be great, but I'm open to a commercial solution as long as it's reliable and well supported.

• Java: versioned data structures?

  I have a data structure that is pretty simple (basically a structure containing some arrays and single values), but I need to record the history of the data structure so that I can efficiently get the contents of the data structure at any point in time. Is there a relatively straightforward way to do this? The best way I can think of would be to encapsulate the whole data structure with something that handles all the mutating operations by storing data in functional data structures, and then for each mutation operation caching a copy of the data structure in a Map indexed by time-ordering (e.g. a TreeMap with real time as keys, or a HashMap with a counter of mutation operations combined with one or more indexes stored in TreeMaps mapping real time / tick count / etc. to mutation operations) any suggestions?

I'm recently out of school where I did a ton of scientific computing and some functional programming, so I'm pretty comfortable with those families of languages. If at all possible, I'd like to pick a language with some market value, though I know this is tough to gauge. • Map Reduce Frameworks/Infrastructure

  Map Reduce is a pattern that seems to get a lot of traction lately and I start to see it manifest in one of my projects that is focused on an event processing pipeline (iPhone Accelerometer and GPS data). I needed to built a lot of infrastructure for this project, in fact it overweighs the logic code interacting with it by 2x. Some of the components I built where EventProcessors (with in- and output plus buffering, timing etc.), multiplexers and aggregators. This leads me to my question what the "common" required infrastrucutre for map reduce is. Since I am working with .Net a lot I can see map reduce infrastructure built into the Framework and language constructs. Functional languages support this paradigm per se. It seems every language can be used with map reduce, some have better support than others, others again are built around that concept (e.g. Go). And there are Frameworks like Apache Hadoop to support map reduce.

• What is the point in using a "real" database modeling tool?

  We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app). Some have suggested we use Visio to do all the diagramming and to generate the DDL, but others have suggested we use a dedicated database design tool, rather than a diagramming tool that is able to export DDL. Is there any benefit to using "real" DB design tools, such as ModelRight, over general tools like Visio? If so, what are those specific benefits? Edit: In a nutshell, what can real/dedicated tools do that something like Visio can't, and how much do these capabilities matter (from a best-practices standpoint, for example)

• Machine learning in OCaml or Haskell?

  I'm hoping to use either Haskell or OCaml on a new project because R is too slow. I need to be able to use support vectory machines, ideally separating out each execution to run in parallel. I want to use a functional language and I have the feeling that these two are the best so far as performance and elegance are concerned (I like Clojure, but it wasn't as fast in a short test). I am leaning towards OCaml because there appears to be more support for integration with other languages so it could be a better fit in the long run (e.g. OCaml-R). Does anyone know of a good tutorial for this kind of analysis, or a code example, in either Haskell or OCaml?

• Data tweaking code runs fine when executed directly - but never stops when used in trigger

  I have written some code to ensure that items on an order are all numbered (the "position number" or "item number" has been introduced only recently and we did not want to go and change all related code - as it is "asthetics only" and has no functional impact.) So, the idea is to go and check for an records that jave an itemno of NULL or 0 - and then compute one and assign it. When executing this code in a query window, it works fine. When putting it into an AFTER INSERT-trigger, it loops forever. • Online product demo environment for Windows applications

  I'm looking for a way to allow potential customers to try my application before they buy it. The product is a windows forms application that requires an SQL Server database to operate. Although I have a functional demo that the customer can install on their network, I want to make it easier for them by have them "play" with it at my environment. I remember Microsoft had (has?) something similar. I was testing Visual Studio a few years ago in a virtual environment where I was connecting to a server at Microsoft. Any suggestions? Thanks.
