  • Good Hash Function for Strings

    I'm trying to think up a good hash function for strings. And I was thinking it might be a good idea to sum up the unicode values for the first five characters in the string (assuming it has five, otherwise stop where it ends). Would that be a good idea, or is it a bad one? I am doing this in Java, but I wouldn't imagine that would make much of a difference.

  • Good book(s) for MMORPG design & implementation?

    I am a long time professional C/C++ programmer (mostly embedded systems) and a hobbyist windows & php hacker. Can anyone recommend a book(s) specifically aimed at designing and (hopefully) implementing an MMORPG? I don't need general how to design or how to code books. Maybe a really good generic games book, but I am not interested in 1st person shooters, I want to know what it takes to implement an MMORPG. Good books, maybe also good URLs. Thanks just searching eBay and Amazon threw up a whole slew of books. Amazon's customer reviews give me an idea of how good they are, and the overview tells me what areas they cover

  • How to decide how backward-compatible my new Mac OS X application should be?

    I'm currently contemplating writing an OS X version of my Windows software. My Windows application still supports Windows XP, and I know that if I drop support for it now, our customers will cry bloody murder. I'm new to OS X development, and as I learn the technology, APIs, etc., I realized that if I'm going to provide comparable level of backward compatibility (e.g. down to OS X 10.5), I would not be able to use many things that look very useful and relevant in my case (ARC, XPC communications, many others). This is quite different from Windows, in my opinion, where there are very little changed between Windows XP and Windows 7 from desktop application developer's standpoint. So, on one hand, it seems like a complete waste to stick to 2007 or 2009-level API in 2012. On the other hand, according to NetMarketShare report and Stat Owl report Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 market share is still 11% and 35%-40% respectively. However, I'm not sure if these older OS users are my target audience (buyers of software utilities) if they didn't bother to upgrade their OS... My question: Are there any other reasons I should take into account when deciding if I target 10.5 or 10.6 or 10.7 for a new application?

    Hi Alls, I'm trying to make a script to list all directory, subdirectory, and files in a given directory. I tried this : import sys,os root="/home/patate/directory/" path=os.path.join(root,"targetdirectory") for r,d,f in os.walk(path): for file in f: print os.path.join(root,file) Unfortunatly it doesn't work properly, i get all the files, but not them complete path. like : if the dir struct would be : /home/patate/directory/targetdirectory/123/456/789/file.txt It would print: /home/patate/directory/targetdirectory/file.txt What i need is the first result, any help would be greatly appreciated !     According to the specification, a part of a PDF document can reside in an external file. An example for an image: 2 0 obj << /Type /XObject /Subtype /Image /Width 117 /Height 117 /BitsPerComponent 8 /Length 0 /ColorSpace /DeviceRGB /FFilter /DCTDecode /F (pinguine.jpg) >> stream endstream endobj I found that this functionality does work in Adobe Acrobat 5.0 for Windows (sample PDF with the image), also I managed to view this file in Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.3 for Mac OS X after I found the setting "Allow external content". Unfortunately, it seems that non-Adobe tools ignore the external stream feature. I hope I'm wrong, therefore ask the question: How to enable external streams in Mac OS X? (I think that all the system Mac OS X tools use the same library, therefore say "Mac OS X" instead of "Preview".) Or maybe there could be a programming hook to emulate external streams? My task is: store a big set of images (total ˜300Mb) outside of a small PDF (˜1Mb). At some moment, I want to filter PDF through a quartz filter and get a PDF with the images embedded. Any suggestions are welcome.

I have issues with diffrent versions on diffrent servers The development tools are worse than access I dont understand it.     Hello! I decidet to start my own web project. It should be highload project, and I can't decide which technologies should I use. I'm good in ASP.NET MVC, but I like languages like Python more than C#. I read a lot about Python and Django/Pylons/etc but I didn't find any good examples of highload projects on python. So, the question is: Is Python good for highload project? Is it enough fast? And if it is, are python frameworks like django/pylons/etc good for this? Or asp.net mvc will be better choice? PS, I'm not interesting in Java, Ruby and PHP :) So, I'm choosing only between Python + django/pylons/etc and asp.net mvc. Thanks in advance. Please, don't make holywars :)

  • Good way to create PDF from Office documents in Java

    I'm looking for a good way to convert Office (mostly Microsoft) documents to PDF in Java. I've been looking at using the OpenOffice SDK but from the samples I've looked at it looks like this requires having OpenOffice running in server mode to do the work. Does anyone know of a good way to do this? Good meaning the less external requirements, the better. A 100% Java API would be best, but I don't expect that actually exists.
