  • Cluster of computers for rent?

    I am doing a project in the university which requires running of multiple instances (1000s) of a program I've written (in C++), which runs for quite a while (say 2 hours). The program is very self contained - it does not require input files, and the only dependency I think is boost. I'm currently using the university-owned cluster of computer. However, it's quite old and the jobs dispatching and monitors services are pretty bad. So I was wondering whether I can run my jobs elsewhere, for some money. For example, I looked a bit into Google App Engine, but as it seems every job must end after 30 seconds it is not suitable for me. Maybe Amazon EC2? Do you know of such options?

  • What alternatives are there to Google App Engine?

    What alternatives are there to GAE, given that I already have a good bit of code working that I would like to keep. In other words, I'm digging python. However, my use case is more of a low number of requests, higher CPU usage type use case, and I'm worried that I may not be able to stay with App Engine forever. I have heard a lot of people talking about Amazon Web Services and other sorts of cloud providers, but I am having a hard time seeing where most of these other offerings provide the range of services (data querying, user authentication, automatic scaling) that App Engine provides. What are my options here?

    Is there a way to control the output filenames of an Hadoop Streaming job? Specifically I would like my job's output files content and name to be organized by the ket the reducer outputs - each file would only contain values for one key and its name would be the key.   • Understanding omission failure in distributed systems

    The following text says this which I'm not able to quite agree : client C sends a request R to server S. The time taken by a communication link to transport R over the link is D. P is the maximum time needed by S to recieve , process and reply to R. If omission failure is assumed ; then if no reply to R is received within 2(D+P) , then C will never recieve a reply to R . Why is the time here 2(D+P). As I understand shouldn't it be 2D+P ?

  • Who owes who money optimisation problem

    Say you have n people, each who owe each other money. In general it should be possible to reduce the amount of transactions that need to take place. i.e. if X owes Y £4 and Y owes X £8, then Y only needs to pay X £4 (1 transaction instead of 2). This becomes harder when X owes Y, but Y owes Z who owes X as well. I can see that you can easily calculate one particular cycle. It helps for me when I think of it as a fully connected graph, with the nodes being the amount each person owes. Problem seems to be NP-complete, but what kind of optimisation algorithm could I make, nevertheless, to reduce the total amount of transactions? Doesn't have to be that efficient, as N is quite small for me.

    Hi, I have been wrestling with Amazon's CloudWatch API with limited success. Does anyone know of any good resources (other than amazon's api docs) for using the APIs. I have tried to run them using the PHP library for CloudWatch but get nothing but error codes. What would be the best way to do this? Would I read one line from the file and then split each characters separately and transfer it to the new array? Or perhaps read a line, and then read each character and put that in the array? Thanks for any help.

    What is a good way to provide an API client with 1,000,000 database results? We are cureently using PostgreSQL. A few suggested methods: Paging using Cursors Paging using random numbers ( Add "GREATER THAN ORDER BY " to each query ) Save information to a file and let the client download it Iterate through results, then POST the data to the client server Return only keys to the client, then let the client request the objects from Cloud files like Amazon S3 (still may require paging just to get the file names ). What haven't I thought of that is stupidly simple and way better than any of these options?

  • How can I create an enum using numbers?

    Is it possible to make an enum using just numbers in C#? In my program I have a variable, Gain, that can only be set to 1, 2, 4, and 8. I am using a propertygrid control to display and set this value. If I were to create an enum like this... private enum GainValues {One, Two, Four, Eight} and I made my gain variable of type GainValues then the drop-down list in the propertygrid would only show the available values for the gain variable. The problem is I want the gain values to read numerically an not as words. But I can not create an enum like this: private enum GainValues {1,2,4,8} So is there another way of doing this? Perhaps creating a custom type?

The whole thing contains millions lines of code, so rewritning it all in some other language is not an option. We could write some extra code or make isolated changes, but rewriting everything is out of the question. Now we'd like to put it on a cloud. Which platform do we choose - Amazon EC2 or Windows Azure - and why?

  • Mesos slave not 'Running' multiple executors simultaneously

    I am using Mesos to distribute a bunch of tasks to different machines (mesos-slaves). Here is what happens: 1. My scheduler gets resource offers and accepts it. 2. Mesos stages multiple executors on the same mesos-slaves (each slave has 4 cpus) 3. Only ONE executor enters the 'Running' state on each of the slaves while the others are shown in 'Staging' state. 4. Only after the current executor finishes execution the other executor starts running. Given that I have 4 CPUs on each machine, shouldn't each slave be running 4 executors simultaneously? Each executor requires 1 CPU.

  • Considerations when porting a MS VC++ program (single machine) to a rocks cluster

    I am trying to port a MS VC++ program to run on a rocks cluster! I am not very good with linux but I am eager to learn and I imagine porting it wouldn't be an impossible task for me. However, I do not understand how to take advantage of the cluster nodes. because it seems that the code execute only runs on the front end server (obviously). I have read a little about MPI and its seems like I should use MPI to comminicate between nodes. The program is currently written such that I have a main thread that synchronizes all worker threads. The main thread also recieves commands to manipulate the simulation or query its state. If the simulation is properly setup, communication between executing threads can be significantly minimized. What I don't understand is how do I start the process on the compute nodes and how do I handle failures in nodes? And maybe there should be other things I should also consider when porting my program to run in a cluster?

I am wondering, not so much if it is possible as whether that is cutting a steak with a screwdriver. I see a way to do it in Django that has a bad design smell. Does migrating a literature site that is largely static HTML from Apache to Google App Engine make sense? I'm not specifically asking for a comparison to Nginx or Cherokee; I am interested in whether migrating from a traditional web hosting solution to a more cloudy type of solution recommends itself.     How do I make a WrapPanel with some items having a Height of *? A deceptively simple question that I have been trying to solve. I want a control (or some XAML layout magickry) that behaves similar to a Grid that has some rows with a Height of *, but supports wrapping of columns. Hell; call it a WrapGrid. :) Here's a mockup to visualize this. Here is a horrible MSPaint of some mockups I made detailing this process. Recall from the XAML that the auto-sized buttons have minHeights of 30, and the star-sized buttons have minHeights of 90. This mockup is just two grids side by side and I manually moved buttons around in the designer. Conceivably, this could be done programmatically and serve as a sort of convoluted solution to this. How can this be done? I will accept any solution whether it's through xaml or has some code-behind (though I would prefer pure XAML if possible since xaml code behind is tougher to implement in IronPython).
