  • Refactoring thick client legacy application

    I am working on a fat client legacy C++ application which has a lot of business logic mixed in with the presentation side of things. I want to clean things out and refactor the code out completely, so there is a clear seperation of concerns. I am looking at MVC or some other suitable design pattern in order to achieve this. I would like to get recommendations from people who have walked this road before - Do I use MVP or MVC (or another pattern)? What is/are the best practices for undertaking something like this (i.e. useful steps/checks) ?

  • Visualizing branch topology in git

    I'm playing with git in isolation on my own machine, and even like that I find it difficult to maintain a mental model of all my branches and commits. I know I can do a git log to see the commit history from where I am, but is there a way to see the entire branch topography, something like these ascii maps that seem to be used everywhere for explaining branches? .-A---M---N---O---P / / / / / I B C D E \ / / / / `-------------' It just feels like someone coming along and trying to pick up my repository would have difficulty working out exactly what was going on. I guess I'm influenced by AccuRev's stream browser...

  • How does SWTBOT run a custom eclipse based application? I don't know how to specify my target application

    I have an eclipse based application. I have heard of swtbot however I am having a hard time understanding how exactly does this tool run my application and how would I specify that. This eclipse based application has an executable and various configuration/plugin/features files. I have done the tutorials about swtbot and I have successfully completed them but they all just create a template application to test on. Is this even possible? If not do you guys have any alternatives for UI automation testing on eclipse based apps? Thanks.

  • Which MS technologies would be suited for a data intensive application?

    I'm a junior VB.net developer with little application design knowledge. I've been reading a lot of material online regarding different design patterns, frameworks, and methodologies. It's become a bit confusing for me. Right now I'm trying to decide on what language would be best suited to convert an existing VB6 application (with SQL server backend.) I need to update the UI and add more user functionality and reporting capabilities. Initially I was thinking of using WPF and attempting the MVVM model for this big project. Reports would be generated from SSRS. A peer suggested using ASP.net and I don't have enough experience to determine what would be better. The senior programmers here are stuck on using VB6 and don't have any input on what to use. They are encouraging me to use the latest technologies. This application would be for ~20 users in a central location. Ideally I would stick to a Microsoft .net language. Current interface is similar to a datagrid table where the user would click in to see the detail of each record. They would need to have multiple records open at any given time. Internal clients within an intranet How complex are the interactions you expect to implement? not very... displaying data from SQL server to UI. Allow user updates to said data. Typically just one user modifying a record.   • [Qt] How to make another window pop up that extends QWidget as opposed to QDialog?

    So far I've only had my main window pop up other windows that were QDialogs and I'm not getting it to work with a QWidget. The other window I want to display was designed with the Form Editor, then wrapped in a class called ResultViewer which extends QWidget (as opposed to QDialog). What I want is to have the ResultViewer show its ui in a seperate window. Now when I try to display it the ResultViewer ui just pops up in the main window on top of the mainwindow ui. The code I'm using to display it is this (in my mainwindow.cpp file) ResultViewer * rv = new ResultView(this); rv->show(); The constructor for the ResultViewer looks like this ResultViewer::ResultViewer(QWidget * parent) : QWidget(parent), ui(new Ui::ResultViewer) { ui->setupUi(this); } I've looked through the QWidget documentation a bit but the only thing I can find that may be related is the QWidget::window() function, but the explanation isn't very clear, it just gives an example of changing the title of a window.

  • How can two programs talk to each other in Java?

    I want to ?reduce? the CPU usage/ROM usage/RAM usage - generally?, all system resources that my app uses - who doesn't? :) For this reason I want to split the preferences window from the rest of the application, and let the preferences window to run as ?independent? program. The preferences program ?should? write to a Property file(not a problem at all) and to send a "update signal" to the main program - which means it should call the update method (that i wrote) that found in the Main class. How can I call the update method in the Main program from the preferences program? To put it another way, is a way to build preferences window that take system resources just when the window appears? Is this approach - of separating programs and let them talk to each other (somehow) - the right approach for speeding up my programs?

  • Help with simple frame, and graphics in Java

    For hw, I'm trying to create a "CustomButton" that has a frame and in that frame, I draw two triangles, and a square over it. It's supposed to give the user the effect of a button press once it is depressed. So for starters, I am trying to set up the beginning graphics, drawing two triangles, and a square. The problem I have is although I set my frame to 200, 200, and the triangles I have drawn I think to the correct ends of my frame size, when I run the program, I have to extend my window to make the whole artwork, my "CustomButton," viewable. Is that normal? Thanks. I want to change the color or font or background color(it doesn't matter just that they look different from the other displayed properties) of some property.   • Web UI for inputting a function from the reals to the reals, such as a probability distribution.

    I would like a web interface for a user to describe a one-dimensional real-valued function. I'm imagining the user being presented with a blank pair of axes and they can click anywhere to create points that are thick and draggable. Double-clicking a point, let's say, makes it disappear. The actual function should be shown in real time as an interpolation of the user-supplied points.   • Haskell UI framework?

    Is there, by chance, and emerging Haskell UI framework for Windows? I recently took up looking over the language, and from what I see, it would be great little "one-off" applications (elaborate scripts). However, without a good UI framework I can't see it getting in under the smoke and mirrors of the more obvious contenders. I've read that there are many frameworks, but none are full-featured. I'm just wondering if this is something that's on the rise, or is it simply too difficult to get enough developers going in the same direction with one?

While there are a number of UI resources for developers (for example, Joel Spolsky's User Interface Design for Programmers), I'm interested in more of a bullet list that can be communicated in 1 to 2 pages. I'm interested in more tactical, day-to-day UI tips, as opposed to overarching UI design goals that would be covered in a UI design meeting (presumably attended by at least one person with a good UI sense). A collection of these tips might cover about 80% of the cases that an everyday programmer would come across.

The method pl.showHand() returns a ArrayList of a user defined class 'Card'. Inserting a println() inside the loop shows the print, so the code is being executed but the Panel panelplay isnt showing card Images.

  • Login screen delay in CentOS 5.4 x64

    I was happily running my CentOS 5.4 before something bad happened that somehow corrupted the 'nautilus' package. It stopped me from using the default Gnome Desktop. Then I installed (using yum) the KDE and nautilus later on. Now, KDE is running perfectly with one exception that it takes around 10 minutes before showing up the Login Screen and only a blue screen with mouse pointer keeps showing during those 10 minutes.   • Positioning the dialog box in the centre of the screen

    I have a dialog box developed in mfc for a Windows CE device and want it to occupy the entire screen. I used the following code to center my dialog box on the lcd screen of the device: CWnd* pWnd = GetDesktopWindow(); CenterWindow(pWnd); However, I still get a tiny sliver of space on the left side of the dialog box, resizing the dialog merely makes it overflow on the right side of the LCD while the tiny space on the left remains (I can see the blue of the win CE desktop behind.) Are there any suggestions to solve this problem? I checked the margin settings for this dialog box in my .rc files and leftmargin and topmargin are both set to 0. I was wondering if I could get the coordinates of the centre of the screen and then place my window one or two points to the left to deal with the current offset. A messy approach I know!

    I have a JPanel that I am adding JLabel's to. I then want to remove all the JLabels and add some new ones. So I do the following: panel.removeAll();panel.repaint(); panel.add(new JLabel("Add something new"); panel.revalidate(); This works fine. My problem arises when I start a new thread after this like: panel.removeAll();panel.repaint(); (1)panel.add(new JLabel("Add something new"); panel.revalidate(); //new thread to start - this thread creates new JLabels that should appear under (1) firstProducer.start(); try { firstProducer.join(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } Then the output from the original JLabels is still visible. I have read that the revalidate process is a long running task and hence the firstProducer thread is getting started while the revalidation is going on and a conflict is arising. What is the best way to deal with this?
