  Hi, I am new to PHP (Have good j2EE and ASP .net experience) and now want to kick start developing a simple website (A database connection and simple inserts is the max technical stuff i plan right now). I have signed up at zymic for a free hosting (MySql included). Now please suggest me: the available IDEs for developing on PHP on windows OS and any beginner level resources that you have come across, for a .net/java guy which may help me to quickly figure out the differences would you advice me to go for frameworks like joomla etc as a beginner? or is it better i start exploring these after im familiar with PHP?   I decided to learn programming. I've been reading SO for few days, and I think I will start with C++, as I read some articles. I am aware of loops, arrays, program logic and objects a little and I need someone to look me over and help me with small questions I get when doing my first projects. So here is the question - where do I find such guy? I don't got any friends who program and all. EDIT: 2 years later, I am still looking for mentor. • Moving from an IT department to a proper technology company

  I have been working with Java/web applications in an IT department of a retail company. As much as work goes, there is nothing much to say. Fixing couple of if/else loops, writing some simple business logic etc., is all what I have been doing. Having said that, I feel I have a good technical knowledge, and I am willing to move to companies like Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc., [I want to work in these places, because I feel I am a technical guy, and I am working in a place where most people freak out when the words like 'algorithm' are heard] I can of course prepare algorithms/computer science fundamentals etc.,(I hold a 4 year degree in computer science program) but beyond that, will my experience hold against me ? I doubt I'll even get a call from them seeing my work experience. What kind of questions(apart from the algorithm types) can I expect ?

So here is the question: Should I encapsulate those dependant types to their parent types (interface hierarchies) or not or explicitly repeat each type for every single level of my type system or ...?

• HP Envy - HDMI / Mini-display-port not working

  I saw that many of HP envy users (and some other hardwares) are having problems while using Ubuntu (some other distributions too). PROBLEM My main issue is make my HDMI or Mini-display-port work on Linux (Ubuntu). I`m able to make it work smoothly on windows only :( TIP Some guy create a blog, that is very nice and I could found some helps over there. But is kind of abandoned. General Purpose The idea of this post is to put together all users and share though under this issue. Thanks in advance for any reply/comment. • oDesk agency for subcontracting

  My question has to do with whether to create an oDesk agency (I've searched to verify that oDesk questions are appropriate). I have a project for which I was hired, and the client has given me authorization to subcontract a few hours of UI/UX expertise. I don't want to make the client hire the UI/UX guy directly; however, if I hire someone with my company account and then bill the client for the time, oDesk is taking 19% off the top (10% twice). I've checked their FAQ and filed a support ticket several days ago, but nobody has replied. If there's anyone who has had experience with oDesk agencies, do you think it can be handled this way? In other words, can I be the developer in my own agency while also having a UX person on the team?

  I have websites that needs an SEO expert to make them on the top of Google searching result based on some keywords, or at least the first page, the websites are created using common open source platforms (wp, joomla, or magento, zencart) I want to post a job on oDesk but I have no idea on how this particular type of requirement works? what would the guy do on my website? will I be asked to spent extra advertisement money? How do I know s/he really did anything on my site and what have been done? if it's just to optimize URL to make it meaningful then I don't need that, and I am sure giving every page's URL an alias is not enough to make the site popular.   I'm a systems guy. People change their concentrations to avoid taking operating systems, while I took it during my first semester after transferring. I'm taking compilers and networks now, and I think they're awesome. And yet there are so many job postings looking for people to do work in things like web development, and so few postings looking for people to work in kernel hacking or network engineering. What sorts of companies do these things? I'm currently awaiting a contract in the mail for an internship with VMWare, so I'm not out of a job for the summer. Still, I'd like to companies do these things.

• How to deal with well-meaning open-source contributors?

  If a programmer contacts you and asks to contribute to your project, how do you handle it? You don't know if this guy is any good. Perhaps he'll be more trouble than he's worth. He might be trying to attach his name to a successful project just for the kudos. He might be trying to take the project in a direction you don't really want, adding features you think aren't worth the extra complexity. Or, he might be a very useful contributor. You just don't know. How do you handle such requests from people you don't know (On GitHub, specifically, if that makes any difference)? What's the etiquette here?

• Matrix camera, movement concept

  I was talking to some guy. He said that my movement concept in game is bad. When left or right arrow is pressed I'm scrolling background what makes you feel that player is moving (player's X remains same). So... he told me something about matrix view. I should create all walls and platforms static and scroll only the camera and move player's rectangle. I did a little research in Google, but nothing found. Can you tell me anything about it?   So bassicly this is the problem quoted from my teacher : "You have to write a program in C++ that computes the minimal and the maximal value of function f(x,y) obtained on an integer point in a given rectangle [a, b] x [c, d]. Your program should prompt the user to input numerical values of a, b, c and d, as floating point numbers, which are expected to be in a range from -100 thru 100.   i am trying to automate an ubuntu (12.04.1 64bit) installation using ubiquity & preseed on a desktop live cd. it almost works fine. i edited the txt.cfg and added label unattended menu label ^Unattended installation kernel /casper/vmlinuz append file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash noprompt -- this is my custom.seed file the problem is that, the installer shows the keyboard layout chooser and i have to click next. the correct language & keyboard layout (german) are already preselected. what am i missing, or what's wrong in my custom.seed file, to automate the next click? thomas

  Hello! Sometimes I want to watch a movie with friends... them not always being near me makes it hard to do this. Usually everyone will either rent the dvd or get a copy online mostly as .avi files. Usually we all have chat windows open and when one has to pause to get a drink or because of some other reason it is VERY hard to resync. Is there software to handle this? • Invoke host's workspace switcher from inside VM

  When I start a virtual machine (like VMware or VirtualBox) and set it full screen then, from the host OS (in this case Ubuntu), I can beautifully switch to it with the Workspace Switcher. So I switch to the VM like I switch to a virtual screen. But switching back -- from the VM to the host's virtual screens -- seems to be impossible because by entering the VM I loose the host's workspace switcher. Is there a nifty workspace switcher program that runs inside the VM and is able to switch workspaces of the host machine? Edit in light of Frank Thomas' answer, can we configure VirtualBox (or VMware) to not send certain key combinations to the VM, but keep them to the host? Like Super+S. In that approach I would sadly have to miss the nice workspace switcher icon in the guest OS, but that's OK if at least the keyboard trick would work.

• Windows 8 / IIS 8 Concurrent Requests Limit

  IIS 8 on Windows Server 2012 doesn’t have any fixed concurrent request limit, apart from whatever limit would be reached when resources are maxed. However, the client version of IIS 8, which is on Windows 8, does have a concurrent connection request limitation to limit high traffic production uses on a client edition of Windows. Starting with IIS 7 (Windows Vista), the behavior changed from previous versions.  In previous client versions of IIS, excess requests would throw a 403.9 error message (Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected.).  Instead, Windows Vista, 7 and 8 queue excessive requests so that they will be handled gracefully, although there is a maximum number of requests that will be processed simultaneously. Thomas Deml provided a concurrent request chart for Windows Vista many years ago, but I have been unable to find an equivalent chart for Windows 8 so I asked Wade Hilmo from the IIS team what the limits are.  Since this is controlled not by the IIS team itself but rather from the Windows licensing team, he asked around and found the authoritative answer, which I’ll provide below. • How to implement friction in a physics engine based on "Advanced Character Physics"

  I have implemented a physics engine based on the concepts in the classic text Advanced Character Physics by Thomas Jakobsen. Friction is only discussed very briefly in the article and Jakobsen himself notes how "other and better friction models than this could and should be implemented." Generally how could one implement a believable friction model on top of the concepts from the mentioned article? And how could the found friction be translated into rotation on a circle? I do not want this question to be about my specific implementation but about how to combine Jakobsens ideas with a great friction system more generally. But here is a live demo showing the current state of my engine which does not handle friction in any way: http://jsfiddle.net/Z7ECB/embedded/result/ Below is a picture showing and example on how collision detection could work in an engine based in the paper. In the Verlet integration the current and previous position is always stored. Based on these a new position is calculated. In every frame I calculate the distance between the circles and the lines. If this distance is less than a circles radius a collision has occurred and the circle is projected perpendicular out of the offending line according to the size of the overlap (offset on the picture). Velocity is implicit due to Verlet integration so changing position also changes the velocity. What I need to do know is to somehow determine the amount of friction on the circle and move it backwards parallel to the line in order to reduce its speed.

• "Oracle Fusion Is Worth Your Consideration," States Mark Smith of Ventana Research

  After attending OOW 2012, Mark Smith of Ventana Research has written a great blog post on Oct 4th, 2012 titled "Oracle Fusion for CRM and HCM Ready with a Mobile Tap." In this blog post, Mark goes on to say: "It was a great opportunity to get close to the Oracle Fusion Applications, which the company presented as proven and ready, with customers using them on-premises and in private and public cloud computing usage methods. In keynotes from executives Larry Ellison, Mark Hurd and Thomas Kurian and application-focused sessions with executives Steve Miranda and Chris Leone, Oracle repeated the message that Fusion Applications are not just for cloud computing and web services but are also accessible through mobile technology called Oracle Fusion Tap that operates natively on the Apple iPad. The company left no confusion about its applications' readiness for cloud and mobile computing, and provided insight into future advancements." Mark also states: " After two days of Oracle and customer sessions, along with a visit to the demonstration stands in the exposition area, it was clear that Oracle has made an important change in its approach to the market and its executive-level commitment to Fusion Applications. I saw more dialogue with partners to complement its applications, and many announcements, including Oracle's on partners in Fusion CRM, who were also visible during presentations and demonstrations." In closing, Mark makes the following proclamation: "Oracle Fusion is worth your consideration whether you are considering a move to cloud computing or still run applications on-premises or use a hybrid approach which provides more choices to customers than just a cloud computing only approach. We are now in a renaissance of business driving what it needs from business applications, and vendors that convince business they can be trusted will be at the center of a new world of cloud, mobile and social computing."
