  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Mini-ITX board for AM3 Athlon X4 600e processor.

  Hello, I am planning to build a PC to control a robotic platform that I am building (about 50% complete). I need more power than ATOM platform could bring, as the robot will need to do on the fly image processing to work as intended. I was considering using Athlon X4 600e as it is rated 45W Maximum output. Probably underclocked it would go lower than 30-35W. I do not I'am at very long battery life, but the 17Ah, 12V battery should keep it running for few hours. My problem is: motherboard. I am space limited so I am looking for a nice mini-itx AM3 motherboard to match the processor. It is hard to find many tests about power usage of the motherboards itself (for example, when using the same processor on different motherboards, test are usualy done in the opposite matter). Could you provide any motherboard examples or suggest what chipset to look for? Thank you in advance.

• Why does my DVD drive spin up every minute or so, spin down, and repeat (new Dell Studio 15 with Win

  We have just got a new Dell Studio 15 laptop running Windows 7 home premium with slot load DVD drive. If there is a DVD drive in the drive, every minute or so, the drive will spin up, make a couple of noises like it is reading something and then spin down. I think this is ruining battery life. There is no software running that is obviously accessing the drive. Any ideas to what it could be? Are there any tools I could use to try and identify the problem? Thanks.

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.   I suspect that my motherboard is bad, and that my PCI-E slot is not working. I have a Gigabyte motherboard that had a Hauppage 2250 working fine in the PCI-E slot for many months. However - recently - would not get TV channels that I used to get --- until finally Media center cant detect any channels at all. Got a new tuner card (ATI 350 card) - cant detect any channels. The cable signal is good - I have it connected directly to a TV - all channels come in clear. SO that is why I suspect a motherboard problem. Are there any motherboard diagnostic scanner utilities that can verify I need a new motherboard

• Scan disk runs on every boot with Windows XP

  I have four drives on my computer. The problem is that each time I start the computer the scan disk check (CHKDSK) runs for a drive even if I shut down my computer properly. I ran the thorough scan disk check but still for that drive, the scan disk check is always performed no matter what. I wonder what is wrong although everything is fine and accessible along with drive data. Could you guys please help me out of this? I am using Windows XP SP2. Thanks.

  Details: BIOS: AMI Bios, set primary master to Auto OS: Windows XP Sp2 Memory: 384 Mb Processor: Pentium 3 yeah this one is really very old. And some of the capacitors in the motherboard are already bulging. It detected the hdd yesterday when were trying to fix it and install xp. But today it cannot boot and said: Boot failure. What can you suggest that I would do to revive this old machine. What would be the problem, is it the hdd, the ide cable or the motherboard.

• Issue with Capslock key on Laptop

  For some reason my laptop has a mind of its own and the Caps Lock tends to come on whenever it feels like it. I thought it was an software issue from that reasoning, but I later cleared the OS and then reinstalled it hoping to fix the problem, but it didn't. Not only does it do that it also comes on and off whenever the letters A, S, and left shift key are pushed. So I assummed it was a keyboard issue and that the keyboard needs to be replaced, but it has one of those touch pad cap lock buttons also, because even when I press that button it tends to not react. So how can that be fixed with a keyboard replacement or is that connected still? • PC reboots spontaenously: debugging tips

  I swapped my core 2 duo for a quad core recently, and generally things run fine, but every now and then my computer just restarts. I don't even get a blue screen (Vista 32). Core temp isn't a problem. My thinking is that my power supply is inadequate, but I haven't been able to test that (one idea was to under clock the cpu to see if that helped, but going up in speed was the only simple thing to do in the BIOS) Two cases where I semi-consistanly get problems: - Borderlands windowed after some period of time (and some other games, but Borderlands does it pretty regularly) - watching a video (e.g. quicktime/vlc) and having another video running Another thought is non-cpu heat? Maybe the graphics card? Any thoughts on how to track this down appreciated. Thanks!

  I ran into some problems with my ATI Radeon x1200. I want it to support vertex shader 3.0, but it only does 2.0. This is because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 only works with 3.0. So, I want a new video card. Can someone help me, with a more clean look to it? I bet if I would stick to some seller, I would end up with a video card that does not support what I want, or is too expansive. I really do not want it to be above $75, if possible. • Can a UPS give off an EM field capable of interfering with desktop components?

  I own an APC Back-UPS ES 750; it's about 4 years old, and is the only major component remaining in a question that has been boggling me for the last 18 months. (Yep, I originally posted this question about the possessed desktop, and while I marked a solution and closed the question, a week later the same problem returned) I've tried plugging the desktop straight into the wall (but left the other components plugged into the UPS) and the desktop still froze. Is it possible that the EM field generated by the UPS is interfering with my desktop components and causing these otherwise-unpredictable system freezes? To me this sounds like a long shot, but aside from my twin LCD monitors, that just about takes care of all the major components.

• Jumbo Frames on DIR-655

  Hello, I am trying to set up jumbo frames on my gigabit home LAN but no luck so far. My setup is: D-Link DIR-655 router, HW Revision A3, Firmware 1.21 EU Synology DS107+, Firmware 3.0-1337 Laptop w/ Win7 x64, external PCIx NIC managed by "Generic Marvel Yukon 88E8053 based Ethernet Controller" The router is supposed to support jumbo frames but doesn't feature any relevant setting. I set the Jumbo Packet value to 9000 on both the NIC and the Synobox but it doesn't work, ping -f -l 8972 says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Is there any other setting I overlooked, the DIR-655 doesn't actually support jumbo frames, or what else could be the problem?

• Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

• Laptop goes black after a minute or so

  I have a laptop that is behaving strangely. When I turn it on, it does everything what it is supposed to do, but after a minute or so I hear a Click and all goes black. It's like it turns off the power. It doesn't matter what the laptop is doing. It also happens when it's just waiting in the Bios setup menu. Has someone experienced this before? Can it be the power supply? Can it be a cooling problem? Any ideas? By the way, it's a Compaq Presario Laptop, maybe 3 years old already.

• unstable / variating sound level (volume) within same song / clip

  Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

• My MacBook Pro (2011) is dead

  I connected my Sony digital camera with the MacBook and the screen turned black. I wonder why because the Sony camera was not on at the time and technically could not be accessed. So I thought it might be temporary and I turned on my camera. Well, it did not work, but my MacBook Pro has been dead since then. It will not turn on - when I hold the power button for five seconds, nothing happens. When I connect the charger cable, the green light is very dim and blinks a little (with about 20% illumination). I wonder what the problem is. I have to call Apple Care, but just so that I know, what could be wrong? Is my MacBook permanently dead? It might be under warranty but I am not sure.

• Proper way to connect SATA and IDE Hard drives together?

  I have an old IDE hard drive that has a broken Windows install on it. It just won't boot up, and I've tried a variety of solutions. That's fine, I really just need a few files on the hard drive. I have a computer that uses a SATA connected hard drive. It's a working PC. I would like to connect the old IDE hard drive to that compute and basically browse through the file system, grab the files, and copy them to my existing computer. My problem is with my few attempts to connect the IDE drive I would get Boot Disk Failures and so forth. I guess it's trying to boot from the IDE but I'm not really sure. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

• How to redirect sound to USB headset when plugged in?

  I often have to switch between audio output from my speakers and my headset (P5Q mobo with integrated sound and Microsoft headset). I've already got it so that when my headset is plugged in, sound will be played through it, and if it isn't, sound will play through my speakers. The problem is that if I have a game or similar program started while my headset is plugged in, if I unplug it, I will get no sound. Also, if I start the program with no headset, and plug it in, I get sound still through speakers. Is there any way to do this?

• Upgrading HP DL185 G5 8LFF, is using a Dell J1520 4-Drop SATA Adapter possible?

  The HP DL185 G5 8LFF model supports 8 3.5" drives and 1 optical drive. However, instead of the optical drive, I'd like to have 2x 2.5" drives instead. The problem is that the PSU has no more SATA power cables (even though the motherboard has 4 additional SATA data ports). The PSU does have a free 10-pin connector and it looks like the J1520 cable from Dell would fit the bill. Link to cable description Does anyone have any experience using these cables? Are they safe? Any other ideas for adding the disks to the server if I don't use the cable? Thanks!

• HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

• Server responses "bus error" to every command

  I have a linux machine dedicated to MySQL server with a pretty high load. Today I woke up and was terrified to see, that database server is down. I could connect to it via SSH, but it was responding with bus error to each and every command.
