  • Get aspect ratio of a monitor

    - by Alexander Stalt
    I want to get aspect ratio of a monitor as two digits : width and height. For example 4 and 3, 5 and 4, 16 and 9. I wrote some code for that task. Maybe it is any easier way to do that ? For example, some library function =\ /// <summary> /// Aspect ratio. /// </summary> public struct AspectRatio { int _height; /// <summary> /// Height. /// </summary> public int Height { get { return _height; } } int _width; /// <summary> /// Width. /// </summary> public int Width { get { return _width; } } /// <summary> /// Ctor. /// </summary> /// <param name="height">Height of aspect ratio.</param> /// <param name="width">Width of aspect ratio.</param> public AspectRatio(int height, int width) { _height = height; _width = width; } } public sealed class Aux { /// <summary> /// Get aspect ratio. /// </summary> /// <returns>Aspect ratio.</returns> public static AspectRatio GetAspectRatio() { int deskHeight = Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Height; int deskWidth = Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds.Width; int gcd = GCD(deskWidth, deskHeight); return new AspectRatio(deskHeight / gcd, deskWidth / gcd); } /// <summary> /// Greatest Common Denominator (GCD). Euclidean algorithm. /// </summary> /// <param name="a">Width.</param> /// <param name="b">Height.</param> /// <returns>GCD.</returns> static int GCD(int a, int b) { return b == 0 ? a : GCD(b, a % b); } }

  • Query on simple C++ threadpool implementation

    - by ticketman
    Stackoverflow has been a tremendous help to me and I'd to give something back to the community. I have been implementing a simple threadpool using the tinythread C++ portable thread library, using what I have learnt from Stackoverflow. I am new to thread programming, so not that comfortable with mutexes, etc. I have a question best asked after presenting the code (which runs quite well under Linux): // ThreadPool.h class ThreadPool { public: ThreadPool(); ~ThreadPool(); // Creates a pool of threads and gets them ready to be used void CreateThreads(int numOfThreads); // Assigns a job to a thread in the pool, but doesn't start the job // Each SubmitJob call will use up one thread of the pool. // This operation can only be undone by calling StartJobs and // then waiting for the jobs to complete. On completion, // new jobs may be submitted. void SubmitJob( void (*workFunc)(void *), void *workData ); // Begins execution of all the jobs in the pool. void StartJobs(); // Waits until all jobs have completed. // The wait will block the caller. // On completion, new jobs may be submitted. void WaitForJobsToComplete(); private: enum typeOfWorkEnum { e_work, e_quit }; class ThreadData { public: bool ready; // thread has been created and is ready for work bool haveWorkToDo; typeOfWorkEnum typeOfWork; // Pointer to the work function each thread has to call. void (*workFunc)(void *); // Pointer to work data void *workData; ThreadData() : ready(false), haveWorkToDo(false) { }; }; struct ThreadArgStruct { ThreadPool *threadPoolInstance; int threadId; }; // Data for each thread ThreadData *m_ThreadData; ThreadPool(ThreadPool const&); // copy ctor hidden ThreadPool& operator=(ThreadPool const&); // assign op. hidden // Static function that provides the function pointer that a thread can call // By including the ThreadPool instance in the void * parameter, // we can use it to access other data and methods in the ThreadPool instance. static void ThreadFuncWrapper(void *arg) { ThreadArgStruct *threadArg = static_cast<ThreadArgStruct *>(arg); threadArg->threadPoolInstance->ThreadFunc(threadArg->threadId); } // The function each thread calls void ThreadFunc( int threadId ); // Called by the thread pool destructor void DestroyThreadPool(); // Total number of threads available // (fixed on creation of thread pool) int m_numOfThreads; int m_NumOfThreadsDoingWork; int m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs; // List of threads std::vector<tthread::thread *> m_ThreadList; // Condition variable to signal each thread has been created and executing tthread::mutex m_ThreadReady_mutex; tthread::condition_variable m_ThreadReady_condvar; // Condition variable to signal each thread to start work tthread::mutex m_WorkToDo_mutex; tthread::condition_variable m_WorkToDo_condvar; // Condition variable to signal the main thread that // all threads in the pool have completed their work tthread::mutex m_WorkCompleted_mutex; tthread::condition_variable m_WorkCompleted_condvar; }; cpp file: // // ThreadPool.cpp // #include "ThreadPool.h" // This is the thread function for each thread. // All threads remain in this function until // they are asked to quit, which only happens // when terminating the thread pool. void ThreadPool::ThreadFunc( int threadId ) { ThreadData *myThreadData = &m_ThreadData[threadId]; std::cout << "Hello world: Thread " << threadId << std::endl; // Signal that this thread is ready m_ThreadReady_mutex.lock(); myThreadData->ready = true; m_ThreadReady_condvar.notify_one(); // notify the main thread m_ThreadReady_mutex.unlock(); while(true) { //tthread::lock_guard<tthread::mutex> guard(m); m_WorkToDo_mutex.lock(); while(!myThreadData->haveWorkToDo) // check for work to do m_WorkToDo_condvar.wait(m_WorkToDo_mutex); // if no work, wait here myThreadData->haveWorkToDo = false; // need to do this before unlocking the mutex m_WorkToDo_mutex.unlock(); // Do the work switch(myThreadData->typeOfWork) { case e_work: std::cout << "Thread " << threadId << ": Woken with work to do\n"; // Do work myThreadData->workFunc(myThreadData->workData); std::cout << "#Thread " << threadId << ": Work is completed\n"; break; case e_quit: std::cout << "Thread " << threadId << ": Asked to quit\n"; return; // ends the thread } // Now to signal the main thread that my work is completed m_WorkCompleted_mutex.lock(); m_NumOfThreadsDoingWork--; // Unsure if this 'if' would make the program more efficient // if(NumOfThreadsDoingWork == 0) m_WorkCompleted_condvar.notify_one(); m_numOfThreads = numOfThreads; m_ThreadData = new ThreadData[m_numOfThreads]; ThreadArgStruct threadArg; for(int i=0; i<m_numOfThreads; ++i) { threadArg.threadId = i; threadArg.threadPoolInstance = this; // Creates the thread and save in a list so we can destroy it later m_ThreadList.push_back( new tthread::thread( ThreadFuncWrapper, (void *)&threadArg ) ); // It takes a little time for a thread to get established. // Best wait until it gets established before creating the next thread. m_ThreadReady_mutex.lock(); while(!m_ThreadData[i].ready) // Check if thread is ready m_ThreadReady_condvar.wait(m_ThreadReady_mutex); // If not, wait here m_ThreadReady_mutex.unlock(); } } // Adds a job to the batch, but doesn't start the job void ThreadPool::SubmitJob(void (*workFunc)(void *), void *workData) { // Check that the thread pool has been created if(!m_numOfThreads) return; if(m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs >= m_numOfThreads) return; m_ThreadData[m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs].workFunc = workFunc; m_ThreadData[m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs].workData = workData; std::cout << "Submitted job " << m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs << std::endl; m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs++; } void ThreadPool::StartJobs() { // Check that the thread pool has been created // and some jobs have been assigned if(!m_numOfThreads || !m_NumOfThreadsGivenJobs) return; // Set 'haveworkToDo' flag for all threads m_WorkToDo_mutex.lock(); // Notify all threads they have work to do m_WorkToDo_condvar.notify_all(); m_WorkToDo_mutex.unlock(); } void ThreadPool::WaitForJobsToComplete() { // Check that a thread pool has been created if(!m_numOfThreads) return; m_WorkCompleted_mutex.lock(); while(m_NumOfThreadsDoingWork > 0) // Check if all threads have completed their work m_WorkCompleted_condvar.wait(m_WorkCompleted_mutex); // If not, wait here m_WorkCompleted_mutex.unlock(); } void ThreadPool::DestroyThreadPool() { std::cout << "Ask threads to quit\n"; m_WorkToDo_mutex.lock(); for(int i=0; i<m_numOfThreads; ++i) { m_ThreadData[i].haveWorkToDo = true; m_ThreadData[i].typeOfWork = e_quit; } m_WorkToDo_condvar.notify_all(); m_WorkToDo_mutex.unlock(); // As each thread terminates, catch them here for(int i=0; i<m_numOfThreads; ++i) { tthread::thread *t = m_ThreadList[i]; // Wait for thread to complete t->join(); } m_numOfThreads = 0; } Example of usage: (this calculates pi-squared/6) struct CalculationDataStruct { int inputVal; double outputVal; }; void LongCalculation( void *theSums ) { CalculationDataStruct *sums = (CalculationDataStruct *)theSums; int terms = sums->inputVal; double sum; for(int i=1; i<terms; i++) sum += 1.0/( double(i)*double(i) ); sums->outputVal = sum; } int main(int argc, char** argv) { int numThreads = 10; // Create pool ThreadPool threadPool; threadPool.CreateThreads(numThreads); // Create thread workspace CalculationDataStruct sums[numThreads]; // Set up jobs for(int i=0; i<numThreads; i++) { sums[i].inputVal = 3000*(i+1); threadPool.SubmitJob(LongCalculation, &sums[i]); } // Run the jobs threadPool.StartJobs(); threadPool.WaitForJobsToComplete(); // Print results for(int i=0; i<numThreads; i++) std::cout << "Sum of " << sums[i].inputVal << " terms is " << sums[i].outputVal << std::endl; return 0; } Question: In the ThreadPool::ThreadFunc method, would better performance be obtained if the following if statement if(NumOfThreadsDoingWork == 0) was included? Also, I'd be grateful of criticisms and ways to improve the code. At the same time, I hope the code is of use to others.

  • using cin and cout in textmate [migrated]

    - by That Guy
    I am usually a Java programmer, and have used textmate for that almost exclusively, but lately I started using C++ with it. but when i use even the most basic programs and incorporate the cin keyword, and run the program, I dont get an oppurtunity to put in anything during runtime and sometimes it inserts random values by itself! for example, if i ran this in textmate: #include <iostream> int stonetolb(int); int main() { using namespace std; int stone; cout << "enter the weight in stone"; cin >> stone; int pounds = stonetolb(stone); cout << stone << "stone = "; cout << pounds <<" pounds."; return 0; } int stonetolb(int sts) { return 14 * sts; } I would come out with the output: enter the weight in stone32767stone = 458738 pounds. Why is this happening, and how do I stop it?

  • VERY simple C program won't compile with VC 64

    - by Paperflyer
    Here is a very simple C program: #include <stdio.h> int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { printf("sizeof(short) = %d\n",(int)sizeof(short)); printf("sizeof(int) = %d\n",(int)sizeof(int)); printf("sizeof(long) = %d\n",(int)sizeof(long)); printf("sizeof(long long) = %d\n",(int)sizeof(long long)); printf("sizeof(float) = %d\n",(int)sizeof(float)); printf("sizeof(double) = %d\n",(int)sizeof(double)); return 0; } While it compiles fine on Win32 (command line: cl main.c), it does not using the Win64 compiler ("c:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\bin\amd64\cl.exe" main.c). Specifically, it sais "error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol printf referenced in function main". As far as I understand this, it can not link to printf, right? Obviously, I have Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler 2008 (Standard enu) x86 and x64 installed and am using the 64-bit flavor of Windows (7). What is the problem here?

  • Trying to use boost lambda, but my code won't compile

    - by hamishmcn
    Hi, I am trying to use boost lambda to avoid having to write trivial functors. For example, I want to use the lambda to access a member of a struct or call a method of a class, eg: #include <vector> #include <utility> #include <algorithm> #include <boost/lambda/lambda.hpp> using namespace std; using namespace boost::lambda; vector< pair<int,int> > vp; vp.push_back( make_pair<int,int>(1,1) ); vp.push_back( make_pair<int,int>(3,2) ); vp.push_back( make_pair<int,int>(2,3) ); sort(vp.begin(), vp.end(), _1.first > _2.first ); When I try and compile this I get the following errors: error C2039: 'first' : is not a member of 'boost::lambda::lambda_functor<T>' with [ T=boost::lambda::placeholder<1> ] error C2039: 'first' : is not a member of 'boost::lambda::lambda_functor<T>' with [ T=boost::lambda::placeholder<2> ] Since vp contains pair<int,int> I thought that _1.first should work. What I am doing wrong?

  • An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll

    - by Tanner
    OK, Im trying to highlight keywords in a richtextbox, the problem is I've got the code to highlight only the visible text on textChanged event,so I tryed putting the code in the richtextbox VScroll, so when I scrolled up it would highlight the text that wasn't visible before, but every time I start to scroll I get this error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll" Does any one know why? Or maybe a way I could highlight the words while scrolling? Thanks, Tanner. int selectionstart = richTextBox1.Selectionstart; int topIndex = richTextBox1.GetCharIndexFromPosition(new Point(1, 1));//This is where I get the error. int bottomIndex = richTextBox1.GetCharIndexFromPosition(new Point(1, richTextBox1.Height - 1)); int topLine = richTextBox1.GetLineFromCharIndex(topIndex); int bottomLine = richTextBox1.GetLineFromCharIndex(bottomIndex); int start = richTextBox1.GetFirstCharIndexFromLine(topLine); int end = richTextBox1.GetFirstCharIndexFromLine(bottomLine); int numLinesDisplayed = (bottomLine - topLine) + 2; richTextBox1.Focus(); richTextBox1.Select(start, end);

  • How can I convert this C Calendaer Code into a Objective-C syntax and have it work with matrixes

    - by Alec Niemy

  • Can I pass a querystring that translates to a List<int> on the server?

    - by Denis Hoctor
    Hi all, I'm writing a Google Maps app that requests data from the server using jQuery's $.ajax() to send the request to my MVC Contoller. This control expects a List for the category types. What should the querystring look like for this? I've tried http://localhost:9090/mapamenities?amenityTypes=1,5 http://localhost:9090/mapamenities?amenityTypes=[1,5] with no luck. The SearchRquest attribute I'm trying to bind to is public List AmenityTypes { get; set; } Thanks Denis

  • C++ Beginner - Trouble using classes inside of classes

    - by Francisco P.
    Hello, I am working on a college project, where I have to implement a simple Scrabble game. I have a player class (containing a Score and the player's hand, in the form of a std::string, and a score class (containing a name and numeric (int) score). One of Player's member-functions is Score getScore(), which returns a Score object for that player. However, I get the following error on compile time: player.h(27) : error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'getScore' player.h(27) : error C4430: missing type specifier - int assumed. Note: C++ does not support default-int player.h(27) : error C4430: missing type specifier - int assumed. Score _score; //defined as private I get that the compiler is having trouble recognizing Score as a valid type... But why? I have correctly included Score.h at the beginning of player.h: #include "Score.h" #include "Deck.h" #include <string> I have a default constructor for Score defined in Score.h: Score(); //score.h //score.cpp Score::Score() { _name = ""; _points = 0; } Any input would be appreciated! Thanks for your time, Francisco EDIT: As requested, score.h and player.h: http://pastebin.com/3JzXP36i http://pastebin.com/y7sGVZ4A

  • Object not declared in scope

    - by jay
    I'm using Xcode for C++ on my computer while using Visual Studio at school. The following code worked just fine in Visual Studio, but I'm having this problem when using Xcode. clock c1(2, 3, 30); Everything works just fine, but it keeps giving me this error that says "Expected ';' before 'c1'" Fine, I put the ';' .. but then, it gives me this error: "'c1' was not declared in this scope" Here's the whole header code: #include <iostream> using namespace std; class clock { private: int h; int m; int s; public: clock(int hr, int mn, int sec); }; clock::clock(int hr, int mn, int sec) { h = hr; m = mn; s = sec; } Here's the whole .cpp code: #include "clock.h" int main() { clock c1(2, 3, 30); return 0; } I stripped everything down to where I had the problem. Everything else, as far as I know, is irrelevant since the problem remains the same with just the mentioned above. Thanks in advance!

  • Project Euler (P14): recursion problems

    - by sean mcdaid
    Hi I'm doing the Collatz sequence problem in project Euler (problem 14). My code works with numbers below 100000 but with numbers bigger I get stack over-flow error. Is there a way I can re-factor the code to use tail recursion, or prevent the stack overflow. The code is below: import java.util.*; public class v4 { // use a HashMap to store computed number, and chain size static HashMap<Integer, Integer> hm = new HashMap<Integer, Integer>(); public static void main(String[] args) { hm.put(1, 1); final int CEILING_MAX=Integer.parseInt(args[0]); int len=1; int max_count=1; int max_seed=1; for(int i=2; i<CEILING_MAX; i++) { len = seqCount(i); if(len > max_count) { max_count = len; max_seed = i; } } System.out.println(max_seed+"\t"+max_count); } // find the size of the hailstone sequence for N public static int seqCount(int n) { if(hm.get(n) != null) { return hm.get(n); } if(n ==1) { return 1; } else { int length = 1 + seqCount(nextSeq(n)); hm.put(n, length); return length; } } // Find the next element in the sequence public static int nextSeq(int n) { if(n%2 == 0) { return n/2; } else { return n*3+1; } } }

  • Declaration of arrays before "normal" variables in c?

    - by bjarkef
    Hi We are currently developing an application for a msp430 MCU, and are running into some weird problems. We discovered that declaring arrays withing a scope after declaration of "normal" variables, sometimes causes what seems to be undefined behavior. Like this: foo(int a, int *b); int main(void) { int x = 2; int arr[5]; foo(x, arr); return 0; } foo sometimes is passed a pointer as the second variable, that does not point to the arr array. We verify this by single stepping through the program, and see that the value of the arr variable in the main scope is not the same as the value of the b pointer variable in the foo scope. And no, this is not really reproduceable, we have just observed this behavior once in a while. Changing the example seems to solve the problem, like this: foo(int a, int *b); int main(void) { int arr[5]; int x = 2; foo(x, arr); return 0; } Does anybody have any input or hints as to why we experience this behavior? Or similar experiences? The MSP430 programming guide specifies that code should conform to the ANSI C89 spec. and so I was wondering if it says that arrays has to be declared before non-array variables? Any input on this would be appreciated.

I have my code for my Accelerometer function and i want to put it into a BOOL so i can call on it when i need it, but i am having problems. Can anyone Help me put this code into a BOOL named: -(BOOL) accelerometerWorks -(void) accelerometer:(UIAccelerometer *)accelerometer didAccelerate:(UIAcceleration *)acceleration{ valueX = acceleration.x*25.5; int newX = (int)(ball.center.x +valueX); if (newX > 320-BALL_RADIUS) newX = 320-BALL_RADIUS; if (newX < 0+BALL_RADIUS) newX = 0+BALL_RADIUS; int XA = (int)(balloonbit1.center.x +valueX); if (XA > 320-BALL_RADIUS) XA = 320-BALL_RADIUS; if (XA < 0+BALL_RADIUS) XA = 0+BALL_RADIUS; int XB = (int)(balloonbit2.center.x +valueX); if (XB > 320-BALL_RADIUS) XB = 320-BALL_RADIUS; if (XB < 0+BALL_RADIUS) XB = 0+BALL_RADIUS; int XE = (int)(balloonbit5.center.x +valueX); if (XE > 320-BALL_RADIUS) XE = 320-BALL_RADIUS; if (XE < 0+BALL_RADIUS) XE = 0+BALL_RADIUS; int XF = (int)(balloonbit6.center.x +valueX); if (XF > 320-BALL_RADIUS) XF = 320-BALL_RADIUS; if (XF < 0+BALL_RADIUS) XF = 0+BALL_RADIUS; int XH = (int)(balloonbit8.center.x +valueX); if (XH > 320-BALL_RADIUS) XH = 320-BALL_RADIUS; if (XH < 0+BALL_RADIUS) XH = 0+BALL_RADIUS; ball.center = CGPointMake (newX, 415); balloonbit1.center = CGPointMake (XA, 408); balloonbit2.center = CGPointMake (XB, 395); balloonbit5.center = CGPointMake (XE, 388); balloonbit6.center = CGPointMake (XF, 413); balloonbit8.center = CGPointMake (XH, 426); } Please help. i have been trying for ages with no success. Thanks. Harry.

  • Dynamically created jagged rectangular array

    - by gagar1n
    In my project I have a lot of code like this: int[][] a = new int[firstDimension][]; for (int i=0; i<firstDimension; i++) { a[i] = new int[secondDimension]; } Types of elements are different. Is there any way of writing a method like createArray(typeof(int), firstDimension, secondDimension); and getting new int[firstDimension][secondDimension]? Once again, type of elements is known only at runtime.

  • "Pattern matching" of algebraic type data constructors

    - by jetxee
    Let's consider a data type with many constructors: data T = Alpha Int | Beta Int | Gamma Int Int | Delta Int I want to write a function to check if two values are produced with the same constructor: sameK (Alpha _) (Alpha _) = True sameK (Beta _) (Beta _) = True sameK (Gamma _ _) (Gamma _ _) = True sameK _ _ = False Maintaining sameK is not much fun, it is potentially buggy. For example, when new constructors are added to T, it's easy to forget to update sameK. I omitted one line to give an example: -- it’s easy to forget: -- sameK (Delta _) (Delta _) = True The question is how to avoid boilerplate in sameK? Or how to make sure it checks for all T constructors? The workaround I found is to use separate data types for each of the constructors, deriving Data.Typeable, and declaring a common type class, but I don't like this solution, because it is much less readable and otherwise just a simple algebraic type works for me: {-# LANGUAGE DeriveDataTypeable #-} import Data.Typeable class Tlike t where value :: t -> t value = id data Alpha = Alpha Int deriving Typeable data Beta = Beta Int deriving Typeable data Gamma = Gamma Int Int deriving Typeable data Delta = Delta Int deriving Typeable instance Tlike Alpha instance Tlike Beta instance Tlike Gamma instance Tlike Delta sameK :: (Tlike t, Typeable t, Tlike t', Typeable t') => t -> t' -> Bool sameK a b = typeOf a == typeOf b

  • Design pattern for cost calculator app?

    - by Anders Svensson
    Hi, I have a problem that I’ve tried to get help for before, but I wasn’t able to solve it then, so I’m trying to simplify the problem now to see if I can get some more concrete help with this because it is driving me crazy… Basically, I have a working (more complex) version of this application, which is a project cost calculator. But because I am at the same time trying to learn to design my applications better, I would like some input on how I could improve this design. Basically the main thing I want is input on the conditionals that (here) appear repeated in two places. The suggestions I got before was to use the strategy pattern or factory pattern. I also know about the Martin Fowler book with the suggestion to Refactor conditional with polymorphism. I understand that principle in his simpler example. But how can I do either of these things here (if any would be suitable)? The way I see it, the calculation is dependent on a couple of conditions: 1. What kind of service is it, writing or analysis? 2. Is the project small, medium or large? (Please note that there may be other parameters as well, equally different, such as “are the products new or previously existing?” So such parameters should be possible to add, but I tried to keep the example simple with only two parameters to be able to get concrete help) So refactoring with polymorphism would imply creating a number of subclasses, which I already have for the first condition (type of service), and should I really create more subclasses for the second condition as well (size)? What would that become, AnalysisSmall, AnalysisMedium, AnalysisLarge, WritingSmall, etc…??? No, I know that’s not good, I just don’t see how to work with that pattern anyway else? I see the same problem basically for the suggestions of using the strategy pattern (and the factory pattern as I see it would just be a helper to achieve the polymorphism above). So please, if anyone has concrete suggestions as to how to design these classes the best way I would be really grateful! Please also consider whether I have chosen the objects correctly too, or if they need to be redesigned. (Responses like "you should consider the factory pattern" will obviously not be helpful... I've already been down that road and I'm stumped at precisely how in this case) Regards, Anders The code (very simplified, don’t mind the fact that I’m using strings instead of enums, not using a config file for data etc, that will be done as necessary in the real application once I get the hang of these design problems): public abstract class Service { protected Dictionary<string, int> _hours; protected const int SMALL = 2; protected const int MEDIUM = 8; public int NumberOfProducts { get; set; } public abstract int GetHours(); } public class Writing : Service { public Writing(int numberOfProducts) { NumberOfProducts = numberOfProducts; _hours = new Dictionary<string, int> { { "small", 125 }, { "medium", 100 }, { "large", 60 } }; } public override int GetHours() { if (NumberOfProducts <= SMALL) return _hours["small"] * NumberOfProducts; if (NumberOfProducts <= MEDIUM) return (_hours["small"] * SMALL) + (_hours["medium"] * (NumberOfProducts - SMALL)); return (_hours["small"] * SMALL) + (_hours["medium"] * (MEDIUM - SMALL)) + (_hours["large"] * (NumberOfProducts - MEDIUM)); } } public class Analysis : Service { public Analysis(int numberOfProducts) { NumberOfProducts = numberOfProducts; _hours = new Dictionary<string, int> { { "small", 56 }, { "medium", 104 }, { "large", 200 } }; } public override int GetHours() { if (NumberOfProducts <= SMALL) return _hours["small"]; if (NumberOfProducts <= MEDIUM) return _hours["medium"]; return _hours["large"]; } } public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); List<int> quantities = new List<int>(); for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { quantities.Add(i); } comboBoxNumberOfProducts.DataSource = quantities; } private void comboBoxNumberOfProducts_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { Service writing = new Writing((int) comboBoxNumberOfProducts.SelectedItem); Service analysis = new Analysis((int) comboBoxNumberOfProducts.SelectedItem); labelWriterHours.Text = writing.GetHours().ToString(); labelAnalysisHours.Text = analysis.GetHours().ToString(); } }

  • C# Reading and Writing a Char[] to and from a Byte[] - Updated with Solution

    - by Simon G
    Hi, I have a byte array of around 10,000 bytes which is basically a blob from delphi that contains char, string, double and arrays of various types. This need to be read in and updated via C#. I've created a very basic reader that gets the byte array from the db and converts the bytes to the relevant object type when accessing the property which works fine. My problem is when I try to write to a specific char[] item, it doesn't seem to update the byte array. I've created the following extensions for reading and writing: public static class CharExtension { public static byte ToByte( this char c ) { return Convert.ToByte( c ); } public static byte ToByte( this char c, int position, byte[] blob ) { byte b = c.ToByte(); blob[position] = b; return b; } } public static class CharArrayExtension { public static byte[] ToByteArray( this char[] c ) { byte[] b = new byte[c.Length]; for ( int i = 1; i < c.Length; i++ ) { b[i] = c[i].ToByte(); } return b; } public static byte[] ToByteArray( this char[] c, int positon, int length, byte[] blob ) { byte[] b = c.ToByteArray(); Array.Copy( b, 0, blob, positon, length ); return b; } } public static class ByteExtension { public static char ToChar( this byte[] b, int position ) { return Convert.ToChar( b[position] ); } } public static class ByteArrayExtension { public static char[] ToCharArray( this byte[] b, int position, int length ) { char[] c = new char[length]; for ( int i = 0; i < length; i++ ) { c[i] = b.ToChar( position ); position += 1; } return c; } } to read and write chars and char arrays my code looks like: Byte[] _Blob; // set from a db field public char ubin { get { return _tariffBlob.ToChar( 14 ); } set { value.ToByte( 14, _Blob ); } } public char[] usercaplas { get { return _tariffBlob.ToCharArray( 2035, 10 ); } set { value.ToByteArray( 2035, 10, _Blob ); } } So to write to the objects I can do: ubin = 'C'; // this will update the byte[] usercaplas = new char[10] { 'A', 'B', etc. }; // this will update the byte[] usercaplas[3] = 'C'; // this does not update the byte[] I know the reason is that the setter property is not being called but I want to know is there a way around this using code similar to what I already have? I know a possible solution is to use a private variable called _usercaplas that I set and update as needed however as the byte array is nearly 10,000 bytes in length the class is already long and I would like a simpler approach as to reduce the overall code length and complexity. Thank Solution Here's my solution should anyone want it. If you have a better way of doing then let me know please. First I created a new class for the array: public class CharArrayList : ArrayList { char[] arr; private byte[] blob; private int length = 0; private int position = 0; public CharArrayList( byte[] blob, int position, int length ) { this.blob = blob; this.length = length; this.position = position; PopulateInternalArray(); SetArray(); } private void PopulateInternalArray() { arr = blob.ToCharArray( position, length ); } private void SetArray() { foreach ( char c in arr ) { this.Add( c ); } } private void UpdateInternalArray() { this.Clear(); SetArray(); } public char this[int i] { get { return arr[i]; } set { arr[i] = value; UpdateInternalArray(); } } } Then I created a couple of extension methods to help with converting to a byte[] public static byte[] ToByteArray( this CharArrayList c ) { byte[] b = new byte[c.Count]; for ( int i = 0; i < c.Count; i++ ) { b[i] = Convert.ToChar( c[i] ).ToByte(); } return b; } public static byte[] ToByteArray( this CharArrayList c, byte[] blob, int position, int length ) { byte[] b = c.ToByteArray(); Array.Copy( b, 0, blob, position, length ); return b; } So to read and write to the object: private CharArrayList _usercaplass; public CharArrayList usercaplas { get { if ( _usercaplass == null ) _usercaplass = new CharArrayList( _tariffBlob, 2035, 100 ); return _usercaplass; } set { _usercaplass = value; _usercaplass.ToByteArray( _tariffBlob, 2035, 100 ); } } As mentioned before its not an ideal solutions as I have to have private variables and extra code in the setter but I couldnt see a way around it.

  • "The usage of semaphores is subtly wrong"

    - by Hoonose
    This past semester I was taking an OS practicum in C, in which the first project involved making a threads package, then writing a multiple producer-consumer program to demonstrate the functionality. However, after getting grading feedback, I lost points for "The usage of semaphores is subtly wrong" and "The program assumes preemption (e.g. uses yield to change control)" (We started with a non-preemptive threads package then added preemption later. Note that the comment and example contradict each other. I believe it doesn't assume either, and would work in both environments). This has been bugging me for a long time - the course staff was kind of overwhelmed, so I couldn't ask them what's wrong with this over the semester. I've spent a long time thinking about this and I can't see the issues. If anyone could take a look and point out the error, or reassure me that there actually isn't a problem, I'd really appreciate it. I believe the syntax should be pretty standard in terms of the thread package functions (minithreads and semaphores), but let me know if anything is confusing. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include "minithread.h" #include "synch.h" #define BUFFER_SIZE 16 #define MAXCOUNT 100 int buffer[BUFFER_SIZE]; int size, head, tail; int count = 1; int out = 0; int toadd = 0; int toremove = 0; semaphore_t empty; semaphore_t full; semaphore_t count_lock; // Semaphore to keep a lock on the // global variables for maintaining the counts /* Method to handle the working of a student * The ID of a student is the corresponding minithread_id */ int student(int total_burgers) { int n, i; semaphore_P(count_lock); while ((out+toremove) < arg) { n = genintrand(BUFFER_SIZE); n = (n <= total_burgers - (out + toremove)) ? n : total_burgers - (out + toremove); printf("Student %d wants to get %d burgers ...\n", minithread_id(), n); toremove += n; semaphore_V(count_lock); for (i=0; i<n; i++) { semaphore_P(empty); out = buffer[tail]; printf("Student %d is taking burger %d.\n", minithread_id(), out); tail = (tail + 1) % BUFFER_SIZE; size--; toremove--; semaphore_V(full); } semaphore_P(count_lock); } semaphore_V(count_lock); printf("Student %d is done.\n", minithread_id()); return 0; } /* Method to handle the working of a cook * The ID of a cook is the corresponding minithread_id */ int cook(int total_burgers) { int n, i; printf("Creating Cook %d\n",minithread_id()); semaphore_P(count_lock); while ((count+toadd) <= arg) { n = genintrand(BUFFER_SIZE); n = (n <= total_burgers - (count + toadd) + 1) ? n : total_burgers - (count + toadd) + 1; printf("Cook %d wants to put %d burgers into the burger stack ...\n", minithread_id(),n); toadd += n; semaphore_V(count_lock); for (i=0; i<n; i++) { semaphore_P(full); printf("Cook %d is putting burger %d into the burger stack.\n", minithread_id(), count); buffer[head] = count++; head = (head + 1) % BUFFER_SIZE; size++; toadd--; semaphore_V(empty); } semaphore_P(count_lock); } semaphore_V(count_lock); printf("Cook %d is done.\n", minithread_id()); return 0; } /* Method to create our multiple producers and consumers * and start their respective threads by fork */ void starter(int* c){ int i; for (i=0;i<c[2];i++){ minithread_fork(cook, c[0]); } for (i=0;i<c[1];i++){ minithread_fork(student, c[0]); } } /* The arguments are passed as command line parameters * argv[1] is the no of students * argv[2] is the no of cooks */ void main(int argc, char *argv[]) { int pass_args[3]; pass_args[0] = MAXCOUNT; pass_args[1] = atoi(argv[1]); pass_args[2] = atoi(argv[2]); size = head = tail = 0; empty = semaphore_create(); semaphore_initialize(empty, 0); full = semaphore_create(); semaphore_initialize(full, BUFFER_SIZE); count_lock = semaphore_create(); semaphore_initialize(count_lock, 1); minithread_system_initialize(starter, pass_args); }

  • Help with complex sql query

    - by eugeneK
    To make story short, i'm building self-learning banner management system. Users will be able to insert these banners to their site when banners will be shown based on sales/impressions ratio. I have 4 tables Banners bannerID int bannerImage varchar.... SmartBanners smartBannerID int smartBannerArrayID int bannerID int impressionsCount int visibility tinyint (percents) SmartBannerArrays smartBannerArrayID int userID int Statistics bannerID int saleAmountPerDay decimal... Each night i need to generate new "visibility" for each SmartBanner based on whole SmartBannerArray that same user has. So i need to get sum of impressions and sales for each bannerID in SmartBannerArray. All comes to my mind is to use double cursor, one will loop thought SmartBannerArrays get needed values for sum of impressions and sales and then inner loop which will access each SmartBanner and change it's "visibility" percentage based on (sales/impressions)/(sumOfSales/sumOfImpressions)*100 Hope you get the picture... Is there any other way to design better tables or not to use double cursor to avoid server overload ?

    I want three list field items to be displayed, from bottom to top. I am able to display three list field items, but they display from top to bottom.
