    I had hoped to get my hands on a copy at OpenWorld, but it wasn't available yet from the printers.  But it's coming soon: The Oracle Fusion Applications Development and Extensibility Handbook.   • Oracle VM 3.1.1 build 365 released

    A few days ago we released a patch update for Oracle VM 3.1.1 (build 365). Oracle VM Manager 3.1.1 Build 365 is now available from My Oracle Support patch ID 14227416 Oracle VM Server 3.1.1 errata updates are, as usual, released on ULN in the ovm3_3.1.1_x86_64_patch channel. Just a reminder, when we publish errata for Oracle VM, the notifications are sent through the oraclevm-errata maillist. You can sign up here. Some of the bugfixes in 3.1.1 : 14054162 - Removes unnecessary locks when creating VNICs in a multi-threaded operation. 14111234 - Fixes the issue when discovering a virtual machine that has disks in a un-discovered repository or has un-discovered physical disks. 14054133 - Fixes a bug of object not found where vdisks are left stale in certain multi-thread operations. 14176607 - Fixes the issue where Oracle VM Manager would hang after a restart due to various tasks running jobs in the global context. 14136410 - Fixes the stale lock issue on multithreaded server where object not found error happens in some rare situations. 14186058 - Fixes the issue where Oracle VM Manager fails to discover the server or start the server after the server hardware configuration (i.e. BIOS) was modified. 14198734 - Fixes the issue where HTTP cannot be disabled. 14065401 - Fixes Oracle VM Manager UI time-out issue where the default value was not long enough for storage repository creation. 14163755 - Fixes the issue when migrating a virtual machine the list of target servers (and "other servers") was not ordered by name. 14163762 - Fixes the size of the "Edit Vlan Group" window to display all information correctly. 14197783 - Fixes the issue that navigation tree (servers) was not ordered by name. I strongly suggest everyone to use this latest build and also update the server to the latest version. have at it.

  • Deal Registration Moves to Oracle Partner Store (OPS)- The Four Action Items for Partners

    In November 2012, Oracle’s partner deal registration process will move to the Oracle Partner Store (OPS). During this time, OPS will become the single source for partners to register deals, obtain deal status, and place orders. What will partners need to do? 1. Request an OPS Account – If your company is new to OPS the first thing you need to do is request an account (if your company already has an OPS account, go to step 2). It’s important to have the person who will be managing your OPS account make this request as soon as possible. They will be set up as your company’s primary administrator. 2. Set-Up Users in OPS – Setup of users can start immediately, and will be handled by the primary OPS administrator at your company. The process is simple, but all existing users of Global PRM (Partner Relationship Management) deal registration will need to be set up in OPS before November 14, 2012.  3. Review/Action Any Registrations Pending Submission in PRM – Prior to November 14, 2012, all pending registrations should be submitted in the existing PRM system. It is important that this step is complete so registrations will not need to be re-entered when the system is moved to OPS on November 17, 2012. Registrations pending submission are easily identified on the registration listing screen with either “Incomplete” or “Returned to Partner” in the status column.  4. Attend Training – Oracle will offer multiple VAD and VAR training sessions beginning October 29, 2012. It is recommended that all users attend one of these important sessions.  Detailed instructions on each of these tasks can be found on the OPS Information Page.   • Extensible Metadata in Oracle IRM 11g

    Another significant change in Oracle IRM 11g is that we now use XML to create the tamperproof header for each sealed document. This article explains what this means, and what benefit it offers. So, every sealed file has a metadata header that contains information about the document - its classification, its format, the user who sealed it, the name and URL of the IRM Server, and much more. The IRM Desktop and other IRM applications use this information to formulate the request for rights, as well as to enhance the user experience by exposing some of the metadata in the user interface. For example, in Windows explorer you can see some metadata exposed as properties of a sealed file and in the mouse-over tooltip. The following image shows 10g and 11g metadata side by side. As you can see, the 11g metadata is written as XML as opposed to the simple delimited text format used in 10g. So why does this matter? The key benefit of using XML is that it creates the opportunity for sealing applications to use custom metadata. This in turn creates the opportunity for custom classification models to be defined and enforced. Out of the box, the solution uses the context classification model, in which two particular pieces of metadata form the basis of rights evaluation - the context name and the document's item code. But a custom sealing application could use some other model entirely, enabling rights decisions to be evaluated on some other basis. The integration with Oracle Beehive is a great example of this. When a user adds a document to a Beehive workspace, that document can be automatically sealed with metadata that represents the Beehive security model rather than the context model. As a consequence, IRM can enforce the Beehive security model precisely and all rights configuration can actually be managed through the Beehive UI rather than the IRM UI. In this scenario, IRM simply supports the Beehive application, seamlessly extending Beehive security to all copies of workspace documents without any additional administration. Finally, I mentioned that the metadata header is tamperproof. This is obviously to stop a rogue user modifying the metadata with a view to gaining unauthorised access - reclassifying a board document to a less sensitive classifcation, for example. To prevent this, the header is digitally signed and can only be manipulated by a suitably authorised sealing application.

  • Current State EA: Focus on the Integration!!!

    A recent project has me at the front end of a large implementation effort covering multiple software components. In addition to the challenges of integrating 15-20 separate and new software components there is the challenge of integrating the portfolio into an existing environment. Like other clients I've worked with and other environments I've worked in for many years, this is typical. The applications are undocumented and under patched leading to a mystery for any architect leading change.  We can boil down most architecture development methodologies (ADM) into first understanding the current/baseline state and then envisioning one or more future states. Many pundits emphasize the need to focus on the future/target states. I agree since enterprise architecture (EA) is about where you are going and not so much where you have been. But to be effective in the future, I contend some focused time needs to be spent on the current state. And specifically on the integration. Integration is always the difficult part of a project (I might put it more coarsely at a cocktail party). While I don't have a case study, my anecdotal experience suggests poorly integrated application portfolios tend to cost more to operate and create entropy when trying to respond to new changes and opportunities. In the aforementioned project, I was able to get one of our EAs assigned to focus on just integration almost immediately. While we're still early in the process, this EA is uncovering all sorts of information that will greatly assist our future state planning for this solution.   • Configure PERL DBI and DBD in Linux

    I am new to Perl and I work in a Linux OEL 5x server. I am trying to configure the Perl DB modules for Oracle connectivity (DBD and DBI modules). Can anyone help me out in the installation procedure? I had tried CPAN didn't really worked out. Any help would be appreciated. I am not quite sure I need to initialize any variables other than $LD_LIBRARY_PATH and $ORACLE_HOME These are my observations: ISSUE:: I am getting the following issue while using the DBI module to connect to Oracle: install_driver(Oracle) failed: Can't locate loadable object for module DBD::Oracle in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib64/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 .) at (eval 3) line 3 Compilation failed in require at (eval 3) line 3.   • OS Analytics with Oracle Enterprise Manager (by Eran Steiner)

    Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center provides a feature called "OS Analytics". This feature allows you to get a better understanding of how the Operating System is being utilized. You can research the historical usage as well as real time data. This post will show how you can benefit from OS Analytics and how it works behind the scenes. The recording of our call to discuss this blog is available here: https://oracleconferencing.webex.com/oracleconferencing/ldr.php?AT=pb&SP=MC&rID=71517797&rKey=4ec9d4a3508564b3Download the presentation here See also: Blog about Alert Monitoring and Problem Notification Blog about Using Operational Profiles to Install Packages and other content Here is quick summary of what you can do with OS Analytics in Ops Center: View historical charts and real time value of CPU, memory, network and disk utilization Find the top CPU and Memory processes in real time or at a certain historical day Determine proper monitoring thresholds based on historical data Drill down into a process details Where to start To start with OS Analytics, choose the OS asset in the tree and click the Analytics tab. You can see the CPU utilization, Memory utilization and Network utilization, along with the current real time top 5 processes in each category (click the image to see a larger version):  In the above screen, you can click each of the top 5 processes to see a more detailed view of that process. Here is an example of one of the processes: One of the cool things is that you can see the process tree for this process along with some port binding and open file descriptors. Next, click the "Processes" tab to see real time information of all the processes on the machine: An interesting column is the "Target" column. If you configured Ops Center to work with Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, then the two products will talk to each other and Ops Center will display the correlated target from Cloud Control in this table. If you are only using Ops Center - this column will remain empty. The "Threshold" tab is particularly helpful - you can view historical trends of different monitored values and based on the graph - determine what the monitoring values should be: You can ask Ops Center to suggest monitoring levels based on the historical values or you can set your own. The different colors in the graph represent the current set levels: Red for critical, Yellow for warning and Blue for Information, allowing you to quickly see how they're positioned against real data. It's important to note that when looking at longer periods, Ops Center smooths out the data and uses averages. So when looking at values such as CPU Usage, try shorter time frames which are more detailed, such as one hour or one day. Applying new monitoring values When first applying new values to monitored attributes - a popup will come up asking if it's OK to get you out of the current Monitoring Policy. This is OK if you want to either have custom monitoring for a specific machine, or if you want to use this current machine as a "Gold image" and extract a Monitoring Policy from it. You can later apply the new Monitoring Policy to other machines and also set it as a default Monitoring Profile. Once you're done with applying the different monitoring values, you can review and change them in the "Monitoring" tab. You can also click the "Extract a Monitoring Policy" in the actions pane on the right to save all the new values to a new Monitoring Policy, which can then be found under "Plan Management" -> "Monitoring Policies". Visiting the past Under the "History" tab you can "go back in time". This is very helpful when you know that a machine was busy a few hours ago (perhaps in the middle of the night?), but you were not around to take a look at it in real time. Here's a view into yesterday's data on one of the machines: You can see an interesting CPU spike happening at around 3:30 am along with some memory use. In the bottom table you can see the top 5 CPU and Memory consumers at the requested time. Very quickly you can see that this spike is related to the Solaris 11 IPS repository synchronization process using the "pkgrecv" command. The "time machine" doesn't stop here - you can also view historical data to determine which of the zones was the busiest at a given time: Under the hood The data collected is stored on each of the agents under /var/opt/sun/xvm/analytics/historical/ An "os.zip" file exists for the main OS. Inside you will find many small text files, named after the Epoch time stamp in which they were taken If you have any zones, there will be a file called "guests.zip" containing the same small files for all the zones, as well as a folder with the name of the zone along with "os.zip" in it If this is the Enterprise Controller or the Proxy Controller, you will have folders called "proxy" and "sat" in which you will find the "os.zip" for that controller The actual script collecting the data can be viewed for debugging purposes as well: On Linux, the location is: /opt/sun/xvmoc/private/os_analytics/collect If you would like to redirect all the standard error into a file for debugging, touch the following file and the output will go into it: # touch /tmp/.collect.stderr   The temporary data is collected under /var/opt/sun/xvm/analytics/.collectdb until it is zipped. If you would like to review the properties for the Analytics, you can view those per each agent in /opt/sun/n1gc/lib/XVM.properties.
