• DirectX11 Swap Chain Format

  I was wondering if anyone could elaborate any further on something thats been bugging be me. In DirectX9 the main supported back buffer formats were D3DFMT_X8R8B8G8 and D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 (Both being BGRA in layout). http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb174314(v=vs.85).aspx With the initial version of DirectX10 their was no support for BGRA and all the textbooks and online tutorials recommend DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM (being RGBA in layout). Now with DirectX11 BGRA is supported again and it seems as if microsoft recommends using a BGRA format as the back buffer format. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh465096.aspx Is their any suggestions or are their performance implications of using one or the other. (I assume not as obviously by specifying the format of the underlying resource the runtime will handle what bits your passing through and than infer how to utilise them based on the format). • How long would it take to learn Python?

  Hi all I have decided to take the time out after work to learn Python. Python appeals to me because at work (Web and eLearning Company), I have to follow out very repetitive tasks like delete all these tags, rename all these tasks and even more advanced repetive tasks. Additionally it would be good for me to get an understanding of Python first because of its fairly easy to learn syntax. How long would it take to learn the basics and go through these tutorials on Python (+ the Python tutorial)? • No alternative drivers appearing on Software Sources and manual install leads to no unity

  I just got a new laptop, installed Ubuntu 12.10 and am trying to install proprietary nvidia drivers. Once I understood the change from jockey, I did a fresh install and followed these instructions: http://techhamlet.com/2012/11/install-nvidia-drivers-in-ubuntu-12-10/ But when I do, Unity crashes on startup. My hardware on lspci | grep VGA is as follows 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GT 650M] (rev a1) I've followed a couple of nvidia 12.10 tutorials on Google but none have helped. Can I get any specific advice?

• "SASL authentication failed" with mutt and Gmail, why?

  I am confused by this, I have installed a lot of new pkgs and followed some tutorials after googling but I keep getting this kind of SASL -err. I am not sure whether the mistake is in some Gmail settings or should I check some settings in Ubuntu? • Modelling photo-realistic grass in realtime

  Hello, I see a number of tutorials on how to create good looking grasses when creating 3D renders but can't think how to model it for realtime/use in a game's scenery. Sure simple models with alpha cutouts can be used to create plants and trees in really awesome scenery but what about a lawn? Are there any good tricks to achieve this effect? I tried with a simple 4 sided box and a small texture and the number of objects needed for a decent appearance made Max crawl to a halt. (I am thinking it may be possible with a shader but that is a whole other area so thought I would just ask about anyones experience with modelling it here) Thanks!

• simple method to install a mail server

  I am looking for a simple way to install a mail server on my Ubuntu server. I would like to be able to receive and send emails though a webmail (e.g. roundcube). I have a domain name. The web server already works without any problem. When I googled "simple method to install mail server on Ubuntu", I arrive on blogs with literally hundreds of steps to install a mail server: A Mailserver on Ubuntu 12.04: Postfix, Dovecot, MySQL Creating a Mail Server on Ubuntu Postfix But, for sure I will make a mistake, if I follow those tutorials, and it will be very very time consuming. Most of the steps look very easy to automate, though. I've try several install methods: sudo apt-get install dovecot-postfix sudo tasksel install mail-server But from there, I have no idea how to add email accounts, and test if it actually works. Do you know if there is an automated way to install a mail server?

• The joomla 'create a template' tutorial

  Hello all, Ive recently downloaded joomla using an instant download option, and now im looking to create my own templates, so i went to http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/joomla15/joomla_create_template.htm and Im trying to follow the tuturial but ive failed at the first hurdle... where it says "First, open the "templates" directory in your Joomla installation. Then create a subfolder in it named "tutorial_template". All the files of your template will reside in it." The problem is I have no clue how to do this, where is the directory to start with?? the only thing I know how to get up is the administrators screen, in which I have to choose one of the stock templates, which would be great if I didnt care about my own designs...but obviously im looking to have my own html and css coding used instead. How do I find where the folders are and how do I open them? Im sorry if its a bit of a dumb question but im so confused..so early on. Thanks in advance. Ryan

• 3DS Max MassFX -- Animation to XNA without bones/skins?

  I made a model in which a number of cobble stones fall into a hole using the rigid bodies in 3DS Max 2012 MassFX. They are just editable polys, no skin, no bone. I want this to play (Take 001, 0-100 frames) when the game loads the mesh. I haven't found a way to get to the animation though. Does anyone have suggestions? All the tutorials for animated skinned models don't seem to work with a model set up like this? Do I really need to give each of 145 rocks a bone? If so, does anyone have a suggestion how to streamline that, or if there is an alternate solution to achieving this effect? The animation only needs to play once when the game starts, and that's it. Thanks.

• Shadow-mapping xna

  I've been trying to implement shadows in my game and I've been following quite a few tutorials online, mainly Riemers, but I'm always getting the same 2 errors when I'm drawing my models and setting the parameters from the effect file. The errors are: This method does not accept null for this parameter. Parameter name: value and Object reference not set to an instance of an object. So I've then downloaded a sample and just replaced my model with the one found in the sample and the same errors occur. I this find very strange as it works with his model. I'm wondering if the problem is with my models (I made them myself). Here's the code where the errors occur (they start to occur after the second foreach loop). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

• Developing iOS apps as web developer

  My Boss has sold a few 'iPhone apps' to clients, we are a web development shop. I have explained to him that I do not know the first thing about them, but it's such a powerful buzz-word and we need to meet clients expectations. I do have some experience in C, Java and Python which should help if I need to use objective-C. I have even done a few Android tutorials. These apps will more or less be HTML, in my mind they are not real apps, but faux apps which have the same functionality as the clients' websites. To me a real app is something that uses the phones hardware inputs and outputs, gps, accelerometer, speaker etc. What resources can I use to get up to speed iOS development and how to build apps in html. I have no idea where to begin.
