• Upgrade from Vista 32 to Vista 64

  I just ordered a laptop, and it came with Vista Home Premium 32. I want Vista Home Premium 64 on it. I'm planning a reinstall. Does anyone know if my product key for Vista 32 will also work for Vista 64 for an OEM copy? As far as I know, I just need to get the 64 bit media. Is this correct? Thanks. Update The laptop is a Dell XPS M1330, and its hardware is supported. Dell would even sell it with 64 bit. However, it was significantly more expensive for lower specs, and I couldn't get it in red.

• Choice of operating systems for a Rackspace cloud installation

  I am planning to use Rackspace cloud services to host a java web application and also run apace for wordpress and trac. What would be a stable operating system to host such an application. My requirements are that the core OS bundle should be minimalistic (so I can install only what I want), consume very little memory and be performant. I would also need it to contain softwares for the common lamp stack, J2EE stack etc. A supported package manager would be lovely. My choices are listed below. RHEL 5.3 or 5.4 Debian Lenny Ubuntu 8.04 onwards Centos 5.3 or 5.4 Arch 2009.02 Gentoo 2008.0 or 10.1 Fedora 11 or 12 PS: can somebody add the rackspace tag to this? Edit to remove this line as well. • MacBook Pro - 7200 vs 5400 rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 7200 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 5400 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? Our main candidates are MDaemon 11 and Exchange 2007 or 2010. We would like to learn other users experiences on those solutions. The server-side experiences, the user-side experiences, feature set, TCO, support options etc. And if there were other solutions (like MDaemon 11 + Exchange or anything else) what would you suggest ?

• Connecting Dell PowerVault NAS to ESXi

  Just got a Dell PowerVault NAS storage device running Windows Storage Server Standard which includes NFS. When I try and connect the ESXi server I get the following message: Call "HostDatastoreSystem.CreateNasDatastore" for object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi "powerhouse" failed. Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to complete Sysinfo operation. Please see the VMkernel log file for more details. I am pretty sure it is a username/password type thing. Not sure were to begin though. Also, I am planning on using "Username Mapping" instead of Active Directory. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

  I'm planning on setting up a server using ubuntu lucid lynx, which uses upstart.I'm not finding the docs too intuitive, so i'd like to ask a solution for my specific problem. I'm currently using a script to start up my IPV6 tunnel with free6/gogo6 - right now its a simple script invoking a single command, and its configuration file #! /bin/sh /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c -f /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c.conf Of course, when this goes down, it tends to be silent, and so i'd need to get in and restart it I'd like to set up an upstart script which will start this app on startup, functionally identical to the script i have restart this script as 'root' should the app fail enable me to restart the tunnel should anything go wrong.

  Hello Experts, We have an enterprise web app to which our clients post/upload lots of documents [mainly images and pdf files] via web interface, iphone app etc etc. We are also using imagick to split pdf documents into images. Also, large number of mysql SELECT/UPDATE/DELETE queries happen all day. Currently, all of this is happening on same server and we are planning to split the process in 3 stages : 1) a server only for database 2) a server only for documents (document upload, splitting etc) 3) a server for the main php web app Is there any drawback with this kind of structure as compared to hosting everything on same server ? • How to run Firefox in Protected Mode? (i.e. at low integrity level)

  i noticed that Firefox, unlike Chrome and Internet Explorer, doesn't run in the Low Mandatory Level (aka Protected Mode, Low Integrity) Google Chrome: Microsoft Internet Explorer: Mozilla Firefox: Following Microsoft's instructions, i can manually force Firefox into Low Integrity Mode by using: icacls firefox.exe /setintegritylevel Low But Firefox doesn't react well to not running with enough rights: i like the security of knowing that my browser is running with less rights than i have. Is there a way to run Firefox into low rights mode? Is Mozilla planning on adding "protected mode" sometime? Has someone found a workaround to Firefox not handling low rights mode? Update From a July 2007 interview with Mike Schroepfer, VP of Engineering at the Mozilla Foundation: ...we also believe in defense in depth and are investigating protected mode along with many other techniques to improve security for future releases. After a year and a half it doesn't seem like it is a priority.

I mean I want to share the internet connection through it I have installed 2 Lan cards in it eth0 and eth1 eth0 Internet eth1 LAN eth0 configuration as follows ; Ipaddress : 115.252.64.187 Subnet : 255.255.255.240 Gateway : 115.252.64.177 I wrote the following entries in Vim /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 202.138.96.2 (preferred DNS Server) nameserver 202.138.103.2 (secondary DNS server) :q! then eth1 ipaddress : 192.168.1.1 subnet : 255.255.255.0 gateway : 192.168.1.1 (I am confused which gateway I need to use in the above scenario) I am unable to ping to my lan and I am able to connect to the Internet. • Hardware selection for Linux machine

  Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since. One notable difference is that I can no longer find motherboards with nVidia chip sets. • Do I need VMWare vSphere?

  I'm planning use vmware to upgrade some of very aged server instead replace with all new bunch of server. VMWare vSphere sounds great but because of low budget I can't afford for both licenses and SANs. Without SAN, is vSphere worth the price? As I know without SAN, the VMWare HA, VMontion, FT is unavailable. So, do I need vSphere or only ESXi free version assume that I only need backup vm daily? Do you know any completed solution about backup on ESXi 4? TIA, -Gk

• Installing Windows 7 on an Asus EeePC 1008HA

  I'm planning to install Windows 7 on my Asus EeePC 1008HA netbook. I heard that there were some issues with RC1, but other than that have not had much luck finding help with this specific hardware. The closest I've found is this article for the similar 1005HA. I can find XP drivers and have them downloaded just in case. Also (obviously) I've backed up everything on the machine. Anyone on here got any experience with Windows 7 on an Asus EeePC 1008HA? Anyone know whether the reported issues with RC1 have been fixed by the RTM and driver updates?

  We are having a server with good CPU and RAM,so we are planning to do XEN virtualization on ubuntu 12.04 server to handle high traffic. The plan is to keep the host machine only to manage VMs(no NAT ing). A New public IP will be assigned to that VM,For that i think we need a Bridge to external network(Since my Machine has only single ethernet card aliased with 4 different Pub IP's) Is it possible to create a bridge using aliased IP single ethernet card aliased to 4 pub IPs Do we need an additional Ethernet card to do Bridging.Only have ssh access to the machine. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

  I'm planning on deploying my ASP.NET Web app in the production environment using a Windows Server 2003 machine. But I know nothing about the CPU brand names and what's best. I know 4 GB RAM, with anything over 3 GHz clock speed will be a good bet and will serve a large number of users. But tell me what's the latest and greatest processor brand-names for running a Windows Server 2003 OS today? And what edition of the Windows 2003 Server do I need out of the following, if I have to run a website to support about 100,000 (a hundred thousand) users, 60% of who are expected to be online at all times? Web Edition Standard Enterprise Datacenter source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_2003 The article says that the Web edition can only support up to 2 GB of RAM. Will that be sufficient for the above user population?

  I am planning to migrate from Mac OS X and Windows to either a Unix or Linux distribution, i.e. I am a Linux/Unix beginner. Right now the following caught my interest: Debian: Well established with huge repository of 20000+ apps. gNewSence: "Totally free" version of Ubuntu, so it should be more beginner friendly? OpenSolaris: Also open-source, and built on "strong" Unix base. I do mainly basic tasks such as web browsing, office work, maintaining big photo collection, and a little bit of programming. Questions: How "free" are each of these distributions compared to each other, is this whole freedom thing a big deal? Will a binary labeled as for Ubuntu work on gNewSense? What are simple IDEs for Debian and gNewSense?

  Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a new notebook since the Toshiba I have now sucks in battery life. I'm a web designer & programmer, and the main features of the notebook should be: High battery life Small, 13.3" or 14" screen A fast processor and RAM that won't let me down while multi-tasking Anything other than these is secondary, I wouldn't like it to be very pricey though :) I'm now leaning towards Macbook Pro 13.3", 2.66 Ghz; it has 10 hours of battery life. However, I mostly develop on Windows, so I don't know how many hours of battery will I get if I run Windows 7 on Bootcamp. Your ideas and suggestions will be much appreciated.

• Mysql out of disk space

  I have just finished developing a rails app which has a mysql db as a backend. The app is meant for high traffic and will store lots of information. I am planning to set up my own web server and host the site from it. If in future my disk space runs out i would want to expand by adding more space. But say if my mysql database is housed in my /disk0s1 and by adding a new drive i have more partitions (and hence more disk space), how then would i extend my database to store information on those partitions too, and at the same time prevent any information from being written on the original partition. Should i go for multiple databases? if so how? If i went for a hosting solution i wouldn't be bothering about this as i would just have to worry about making payments for the extra space :) I always wondered how space is added on-the-go by these webhosts. Is there any specific mysql configuration that i have to make?

• Home networking - Wireless switch?

  I currently have a Linksys WRT160N that has a couple wireless clients and a few wired clients. We are planning to switch from DSL to cable and unfortunately, there isn't a cable point in a location close to the wired clients (i.e. the new location of the router would be too far from the wired clients to lay Ethernet cables). Thus, I was wondering if there was a wireless switch of some sort in which it would be a standard Ethernet switch that would connect to my wireless network? (This is a home network,of course.)

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system. • Multiple VLANs, multiple subnets, single DHCP server?

  Hey guys! At my job we are prepping to transition from multiple LANs connected over slow VPN connections to a single MAN connected over fiber, and I've got a few questions. First of all, we are planning on making each physical site its own VLAN, but we would like to have a single DHCP server at the data center hand out IPs to each VLAN. We've pretty much got the VLAN tagging structure all worked out, but we would like to have our single DHCP server assign different subnets of IPs to each VLAN. For instance, VLAN 2 gets 10.0.2.x through 10.0.4.x, VLAN 3 gets 10.0.5.x through 10.0.7.x etc. We are an Active Directory based shop and we have a Server 2003 box handling DHCP (though we aren't averse to upgrading it to server 2008.) Is this feasible, or am I pipe-dreaming?

• Install 64-bit Ubuntu or 32-bit?

  I'll be receiving a new notebook in a few days and was planning on running Ubuntu on it as it's compatible and the notebook has no OS pre-installed. The specifications are: Core 2 Duo, T6600, 4 GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics. I know a year or two ago, running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu was not advised due to much of the applications and plugins (e.g. Flash) only running on 32-bit. Is this still the case? Would I get better performance with 64-bit Ubuntu since I have 4 GB of RAM? Are there any downsides anymore?

• How many pHPShield loaders do I need to install

  An application asks me to install an old pHPshield version but prior to that it asks that I delete all pHPshield loaders in the php extension_dir directory. Am planning to encode some of my own php files with the newer pHPSHIELD version (8+) so I need to also upload newer loaders, but am not sure if it's ok to have multiple pHPSHIELD loaders in the extension dir. Can someone please clarify this confusion? My server runs php 5.2.14 with phpSHIELD Loader Version 5.0.1 and an i386 structure on Centos. The pHPSHILED demo created me a bunch of folders containing the loaders(files that end with .lin extension. I assume the folder Linux_x86-32 is the correct one for my server structure and it contains files like ixed.5.0.1.lin . Can I upload these next to the existing one in the extension_dir directory? Thank you

• Throughput tool with decent graphing.

  I've been looking through some of the tools available for measuring network throughput, namely iperf, bwping, ttcp, etc. I am planning on doing throughput tests over a long period of time, so what I really need is good graphing output, preferably rrd graphs. The Jperf frontend for iperf will generate a graph, and bmon has a nice command-line graph, but these simply count seconds since the test was started. I am trying to measure trends in throughput over times of the day, so a graph with times and days is necessary. So a way to get iperf to log to RRDs would be best, if this isn't possible could someone point me toward another solution?
