  • SQL using sum to count results of multiple subqueries

    I have a table with 2 columns: integer and var char. I am given only the integer values but need to do work on the var char (string) values. Given an integer, and a list of other integers (no overlap), I want to find the string for that single integer. Then I want to take that string and do the INSTR command with that string, and all the other strings for all the other integers. Then I want the sum of all the INSTR so the result is one number. So lets say I have int x, and list y=[y0, y1, y2]. I want to do 3 INSTR commands like SUM(INSTR(string for x, string for y0), INSTR(string for x, string for y1), INSTR(string for x, string for y2)) I think im going in the wrong direction, this is what I have.     I have the following data in my database (comma separated strings): "word, test, hello" "test, lorem, word" "test" ... etc How can I transform this data into a Dictionary whereby each string is separated into each distinct word together with the number of times that it occurs, i.e. {"test", 3}, {"word", 2}, {"hello", 1}, {"lorem", 1} I will have approximately 3000 rows of data in case this makes a difference to any solution offered. Also I am using .NET 3.5 (and would be interested to see any solution using linq)

    From October 1st to March 31 the fee is $1 (season 1). From April 1st to September 30 the fee is $2 (season 2). How can I calculate the total fee of a given date range (user input) depending on how many days of this date range fall into season 1 and season 2? There must be a better solution than iterating if/else and comparing dates over and over again for the following conditions: Date range is completely within season 1 Date range starts in season 1 and ends in season 2 Date range starts in season 1, spans across season 2 and ends in the second part of season 1 ... and so forth with "Starts in season 2", etc

    I have a strange one.. I am doing something like : tip = find (:first, :conditions => ["last_shown = ? or last_shown is null", Date.today]) And then a little later on I do : tip.last_shown = Date.today tip.save When I look at output of these queries, ActiveRecord is doing the first query with todays date as I would expect. However, the send query, ActiveRecord is setting the last_shown date to be yesterdays date. Why on earth would it do this? I have config.time_zone = 'UTC' in my environment.rb. I can use Time.now.utc.to_date instead of Date.today but it makes no difference.

    Hi, I'm trying to migrate one of my PHP projects to Doctrine. I've never used it before so there are a few things I don't understand. In my current code, I have a class similar to this: class ScheduleItem { private Date start; //A PEAR Date object. private Date end; public function getStart() { return $this-start; } public function setStart($val) { $this-start = $val; } public function getEnd() { return $this-end; } public function setEnd($val) { $this-end= $val; } } I have a ScheduleItemDAO class with methods like save(), getByID(), etc. When loading from and saving to the database, the DAO class converts the Date objects to and from strings so they can be stored in a timestamp field. In my attempt to move to Doctrine, I created a new class like this: class ScheduleItem extends Doctrine_Record { public function setTableDefinition() { $this-hasColumn('start', 'timestamp'); $this-hasColumn('end', 'timestamp'); } } I had hoped I would be able to use Date objects for the start and end times, and have them converted to strings when they are saved to the database. How can I accomplish this?

  • Retain Count Question: Some Guidance, Please

    [I'm sure this is not odd at all, but I need just a bit of help] I have two retain properties @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *listContent; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *filteredListContent; and in the viewDidLoad method I set the second equal to the first (so now the retainCount is two, I think): self.filteredListContent = self.listContent; and then on every search I do this self.filteredListContent = [listContent filteredArrayUsingPredicate:predicate]; I thought I should do a release right above this assignment -- since the property should cause an extra retain, right? -- but that causes the program to explode the second time I run the search method. The retain counts (without the extra release) are 2 the first time I come into the search method, and 1 each subsequent time (which is what I expected, unfortunately). Some guidance would help, thanks! Is it correct to not release?

    Hello i have a question on picking random entries from a database. I have 4 tables, products, bids and autobids, and users. Products ------- id 20,21,22,23,24(prime_key) price........... etc........... users ------- id(prim_key) name user1,user2,user3 etc bids ------- product_id user_id created autobids -------- user_id product_id Now a multiple users can have an autobid on an product. So for the next bidder I want to select a random user from the autobid table example of the query in language: for each product in the autobid table I want a random user, which is not the last bidder. On product 20 has user1,user2,user3 an autobidding. On product 21 has user1,user2,user3 an autobidding Then I want a resultset that looks for example like this 20 – user2 21 – user3 Just a random user. I tried miximg the GOUP BY (product_id) and making it RAND(), but I just can't get the right values from it. Now I am getting a random user, but all the values that go with it don't match. Can someone please help me construct this query, I am using php and mysql

    So I have built a voting system for a custom post system i wrote. I want to be able to sort by "most voted", "Most liked", etc. I have two tables. Entry: ID, Title, Post Vote: ID, EntryID, Result I want to be able to query the vote table for each entry and see how many vote's there are, and then sort the entry's by how many vote's each table had. I have messed around with joins, etc. and cannot seem to figure it out. Any suggestions?

    I have my greasemonkey script scanning every page i visit for a specific string. I would like to recordkeep the variations of the string in a sqlite db. I'll have another app process this db everyonce in a while. What i dont know is HOW do i store the data into the sqlite db? i was thinking i can launch an executable automatically if the string was found but i dont know how to do that through javascript. Another alternative i thought was have a socket listen on a certain port and have some js magic but i couldnt think of a silent way to send data like that.

How can I get this data? I've tried queries like this: SELECT storeID, itemID, price FROM saledata WHERE itemID IN (SELECT itemID from itemmap) ORDER BY saledate DESC LIMIT 1 and then wrap that into an insert, but it's not getting the proper data.     Well, I`m confused about rails queries. For example: Affiche belongs_to :place Place has_many :affiches We can do this now: @affiches = Affiche.all( :joins => :place ) or @affiches = Affiche.all( :include => :place ) and we will get a lot of extra SELECTs, if there are many affiches: Place Load (0.2ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 3 LIMIT 1 Place Load (0.3ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 3 LIMIT 1 Place Load (0.8ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 444 LIMIT 1 Place Load (1.0ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE "places"."id" = 222 LIMIT 1 ...and so on... And (sic!) with :joins used every SELECT is doubled! Technically we cloud just write like this: @affiches = Affiche.all( ) and the result is totally the same! (Because we have relations declared). The wayout of keeping all data in one query is removing the relations and writing a big string with "LEFT OUTER JOIN", but still there is a problem of grouping data in multy-dimentional array and a problem of similar column names, such as id. What is done wrong? Or what am I doing wrong? UPDATE: Well, i have that string Place Load (2.5ms) SELECT "places".* FROM "places" WHERE ("places"."id" IN (3,444,222,57,663,32,154,20)) and a list of selects one by one id. Strange, but I get these separate selects when I`m doing this in each scope: <%= link_to a.place.name, **a.place**( :id => a.place.friendly_id ) %> the marked a.place is the spot, that produces these extra queries.

    Hi, I'm looking for suggestions on how to track the number of tags associated with a particular object in Rails. I'm using acts_as_taggable_on and it's working fine. What I would like to be able to do is search for all objects that have no tags, preferably through a scope i.e. Object.untagged.all My first thought was to use an after_save callback to update an attribute called "taggings_count" in my model: def update_taggings_count self.taggings_count = self.tag_list.size self.save end Unfortunately, this does the obvious thing of putting me in an infinite loop. I need to use an after_save callback because the tag_list is not updated until the main object is saved. Would appreciate any suggestions as I'm on the verge of rolling my own tagging system.
