  • What is the best place to setup system wide environment variables on Linux?

    I just want to setup a system wide environment variable, JAVA_HOME for all users, including root user. Requirements: accessible to normal users accessible to root always loaded, not only for bash (gnome-terminal does not start a bash by default) to work on Ubuntu, Debian and optionally Red Hat great if addition could be easily scripted So far here is the no-list: /etc/profile.d/java.sh - not executed if you start a new console from gnome-terminal /etc/profile - same as above ~/.profile - current user only, also any solution assuming ~ would not be acceptable because home directory could be on NIS, and JAVA_HOME could be different.

  • Cannot move folder to a subdirectoy of itself - What's going on?

    O.K I am trying to do the following very simple command and it is failing as follows... mv '/home/admin/Downloads/folder1' '/home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/TV/folder1/' mv: cannot move `/home/admin/Downloads/folder1' to a subdirectory of itself, `/home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/TV/folder1/' The destination is NOT a subfolder of the source - why is it giving me this error?? Linux version is a custom version of Red Hat on a NAS box. Thanks

  • ssh connectivity issue

    I have a CentOS 5.5 server hosted in a remote data center. I usually access this server from a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 server using the ssh command. Now my organization has implemented a proxy server, this is not allowing me to connect to the VPS server. I see the following error using the command root@<ip address>:-: ssh: connect to host <ip address> PORT 22: connection refused. Can anybody help me with this issue?

    HI all, I recently purchases a bunch of r710 from dell, i installed esx on it. the installation process finished without a problem. however once the esx boot the following error displays at the botton with red letters 00:00:02:21.493 cpu11:4119) mod:2971: Initialization for vmfs2 failed with -1 i installed on two different servers and the same error pops up. the curius thing is that if i install esxi 3.5 or 4 there is not problem help Thanks Oscar

  • My network manager stop running very shotly when installed VirtualBox-4.0, reporting network manager not running

    I fell into a snare when i downloaded and install virtual box 4.0 on my ubuntu 10.4, when i started the virtualbox i tried i saw that my network icon on my desktop showed my red x showing iam disconnected and this happened shortily when i installed virtual box 4.0 I have searched through the web and found some people who have faced some problem. but the solution they gave them i tried but it coudn't work, of restarting,starting ,stoping the netowrk manager, i was even thinking of uninstalling this virutalbox but not netowrk connection truely i need your help

  • Mac internal mic not working with Xlite

    I've used xlite for a while now but all of the sudden the internal mic from my mac stopped to work with it. It does call, and you can see the red bar rising but the other person can't hear a thing. The mic does work when using Skype so I think it's a problem with Xlite Things I've already tried: Reconfigure Xlite Reinstall Xlite Install Xlite Beta (After every step I rebooted the macbook) Obviously none of them worked.     I've red this article from howtogeek, but it didn't explain this one which is placed in the target portion when you right click on windows explorer and click properties: %windir%\explorer.exe shell:desktop\Inbox And why does local disk E: shows up when I have this one: %windir%\explorer.exe shell:E:\FINAL SAVE DATA I don't really get the code, especially the part in shell: desktop\Inbox. What's that supposed to mean. How do I change it so that when I click on the Windows Explorer shortcut, I get to see this location: E:\FINAL SAVE DATA

There is a picture of the full error below with trace information I believe this is different than the other questions relating to kernel panic errors.     i have a toshiba laptop with windows vista, i turned on my computer once and it had a little red x on the volume speaker, i reinstalled the drive(im not sure if i did that right though) and now sounds works. but i cant lower the sound with "FN and Up/Down arrows", or mute. is there a way to fix this somehow? thanks.

  • Debian or CentOS?

    I am looking at using either Debian or CentOS for a production server and I've heard mixed reviews of each one. I've heard CentOS performs better under load, however I am aware that Debian has a much larger package repository. Personally, I am partial to Debian since I am less familiar with Red Hat distros, but wanted to reach out on Server Fault to see which I really should be using. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Since a couple of days my start menu has a big blank space and just does not collapse. I played around with Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu as well as Number of recent programs to display as is depicted at sevenforums.com. Note that doing so clears your list of recently opened programs. Anyway, my start menu still looks like: At least the space marked with a red rectangle should collapse.

    Hi All, Is there such a tool that would look through a group of stored procedures for source code keywords? A client has a lot of business logic coded into their database and I need to find where it is using certain strings of text? I.E. what procedure contains 'was applied to their balance', so I can refactor that out into business logic. Does anyone know of such a tool? perhaps something from Red-Gate?
