    We have to write an administration panel for many customers. But we want to have just one administration panel, and use it in various projects. This admin panel will have basic components such as access control logic, maker-checker system in changes, user logging and etc. It will also have reporting for the customer, logs of transaction of the customer (which can vary according to the industry such as mobile banking, banking, ticket sales). These components may have to be modified according to the business. So we are thinking about the architecture here, Is it OK to use jars of every basic components, and bring them together on a glue application? Or should we build each component as WARs and make interfaces between them? If there are any more ideas, it will be appreciated.

    What criteria do you have for choosing the right provider for registering a domain? (not hosting, only the domain) So far, I can only see the different pricing and features of the DNS manager but have no idea what I have to pay attention in addition to this. How to know about the quality of the provider's nameserver and could there be differences in speed concerns. Background: The hosting itself incl. webspace, server etc. is separate from the domain and I am not going to book the domain with the same hoster as the webspace/server hoster.

  • Use Amazon EC2 as a backup server

    I would like to use Amazon EC2 as an emergency backup database+web server in the event our primary host becomes unavailable. I feel like I wouldn't have trouble setting up a Windows instance, install SQL Server and get the web server up and running (would take a few hours, plus installing various libraries, our source code, etc). My question relates to pricing. If I simply "stop" the instance rather than "terminate" it, does that stop counting "instance-hours"? I would prefer not to terminate the instance and lose all that work I spent setting it up. If I must "terminate" in order to stop the billing - is it possible to make an image of the server after I have set it all up, then save that image somewhere (S3?) Is this something that people do regularly? Ideally this instance would just be waiting in the wings for an issue with our host, but costing us nothing except perhaps data storage costs.

    Sorry if I am asking a trivial question but I have been searching for a while without any luck. I need to design a system and I am looking for advice on the technology that should be used. The layout is very simple: it is a sales application with a centralized database and multiple clients. Each salesperson has GUI app installed on his/her laptop that should be able to connect to the database to retrieve data and upload data (i.e. register new orders). My question is the following: how should the communication between the client and the server be implemented? I doubt that connecting directly to the RDBMS is a good idea... Should I use web-services? XML-RPC? How to implement authentication and encode the data? Thanks for your advice!

  • What VMWare should I choose?

    I'm new to VMWare stuff. What I need to do is pretty basic: Just to install two different Windows 2008 versions on a server with 2x 4core CPU and 2x 3TB hard disks. I asked my datacenter to install the free version (VMware ESXi 4.1) but apparently it did not recognize 3TB disks. Now I'm wondering whether VMWare 5 can handle 3TB disks, and if so, what variant? There is a huge array of options there and some prices are astonishingly high: http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/pricing.html So I'm really confused and I appreciate your hints.

  • Replace conditional with polymorphism refactoring or similar?

    Hi, I have tried to ask a variant of this question before. I got some helpful answers, but still nothing that felt quite right to me. It seems to me this shouldn't really be that hard a nut to crack, but I'm not able to find an elegant simple solution. (Here's my previous post, but please try to look at the problem stated here as procedural code first so as not to be influenced by the earlier explanation which seemed to lead to very complicated solutions: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2772858/design-pattern-for-cost-calculator-app ) Basically, the problem is to create a calculator for hours needed for projects that can contain a number of services. In this case "writing" and "analysis". The hours are calculated differently for the different services: writing is calculated by multiplying a "per product" hour rate with the number of products, and the more products are included in the project, the lower the hour rate is, but the total number of hours is accumulated progressively (i.e. for a medium-sized project you take both the small range pricing and then add the medium range pricing up to the number of actual products). Whereas for analysis it's much simpler, it is just a bulk rate for each size range. How would you be able to refactor this into an elegant and preferably simple object-oriented version (please note that I would never write it like this in a purely procedural manner, this is just to show the problem in another way succinctly). I have been thinking in terms of factory, strategy and decorator patterns, but can't get any to work well. (I read Head First Design Patterns a while back, and both the decorator and factory patterns described have some similarities to this problem, but I have trouble seeing them as good solutions as stated there. The decorator example seems very complicated for just adding condiments, but maybe it could work better here, I don't know. And the factory pattern example with the pizza factory...well it just seems to create such a ridiculous explosion of classes, at least in their example. I have found good use for factory patterns before, but I can't see how I could use it here without getting a really complicated set of classes) The main goal would be to only have to change in one place (loose coupling etc) if I were to add a new parameter (say another size, like XSMALL, and/or another service, like "Administration"). I see two school of thoughts - Those who use oo concepts a lot and stress on more object oriented approach Those who rely heavily on algorithms and say a particular problem should take o(n) etc. I am not sure where to spend more time ? . Should I spend more time learning OO stuff or learn new stuff like jquery etc or learn travelling sales man algorithm etc ?

The person there told me the only way they sell FAST ESP is as a bundled product with SharePoint.     I realise it is possible to create a crosstab within sqlite, but is it possible to dynamically determine the relevant categories/columns at runtime rather than hardcoding them? Given the following example, it can get rather tedious ... SELECT shop_id, sum(CASE WHEN product = 'Fiesta' THEN units END) as Fiesta, sum(CASE WHEN product = 'Focus' THEN units END) as Focus, sum(CASE WHEN product = 'Puma' THEN units END) as Puma, sum(units) AS total FROM sales GROUP BY shop_id I managed to do this in SQLServer in a stored proceedure before and wondered if there was anything equivalent.

  • How to switch from MSSQL to MySQL for using with Excel pivot

    Hi all, I have a table that contains sales transaction (~20 mil rows). Previously I used MSSQL and export it to an Excel pivot. Data refresh took 10-15 minutes but still do-able. However, after I migrated to MySQL (using XamppLite & ODBC), it took forever to refresh the data in the Excel pivot. Maybe I didn't optimize the MySQL good enough ? Anyone can share some thoughts 'bout this ? Thanks
