• dual boot, Sony Viao, all in one portable desktop, not working and crashes

  I am a fan of Ubuntu but ever since I bought my new computers, both Sony Vaio, I can't get them running together with windows 8.1. When I try wubi, it doesn't show the install box, but some other information box. If I remove wubi from the iso and run it as admin on my desktop, it runs and installs but after rebooting, grub never comes up and it gives the error screen.. On my laptop, I had to make a usb install and partition everything myself and that worked for my laptop, for a little while. Windows boot loader would override and grub wouldn't come up no more, unless I try to boot from usb, with no usb in, and after it reboots because there is no usb, now grub opens, but doesn't cont. That is what happens with my Sony 2 in 1 laptop. My all in one portable just wont boot it period. Bios is the problem but I disabled everything that was necessary. Help

  For years, I’ve been using the “Remote Desktops” mmc plugin to manage servers in our infrastructure.  I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 and Remote Desktops is nowhere to be found!  I search and searched and came across a forum listing saying “Why don’t you just use Remove Desktop Connection Manager?” I downloaded it and started using it and its WAY better than Remote Desktops!  I’m glad they took it out and I discovered this tool.  I wish I had discovered this two years ago! • google maps based desktop application

  I want to build a desktop application which has google maps embedded to it. This app should have a thread to read coordinate data online a usb microphone to use. This application will move the google map markers to their new locations based on the data retrieved from online connections on each refresh. As far as I know gmaps has a javascript API so the first idea in my mind was to embed this mapview into a java applet. So the application will run on a browser. Im not sure if this will work. Do you guys have any idea about this or any other advices you might have? Thanks in advance!!!

• Ubuntu 14.04 + nvidia-331-updates makes a blank desktop screen

  I upgraded my installation from 13.10 to 14.04. The problem is that whenever I install the Nvidia drivers from the GUI, upon reboot or trying to login again it only shows the wallpaper of my desktop and nothing else. The mouse does move around, but nothing works. I am unable to open a terminal or do anything else. If I go into the tty console and purge the drivers, then things seem to work again. I have an Optimus setup, with an onboard Intel and discrete Nvidia GTX770M card. It's a 64-bit architecture. I really need to work with CUDA, and was hopeful after hearing that nvidia-prime was released, but this is a real downer. Any help on this?

• No Launcher or bars on desktop when running from a VPS

  I'm using tightVNC on Ubuntu 12.10 and can see and change the desktop background pic. I can also press f3 to get a file viewer. But there is no topbar or left side launcher. I do not think its an nvidia problem because I'm using a VPS and I logon remotely. I've tried so many variations of /root/.vnc/xstartup such as gnome-session &, or gnome-session –-session=gnome-classic &, my head is spinning. I've seen other people have this issue and was wondering if anyone solved it.

• Mouse Not Detected & Network Not Connected After Installing Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop via Live USB

  I just recently (+- 30 minutes ago) install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on my pc (dual boot) via Live USB (i check the "automatically install upgrade" option when installing it). unfortunately, at the login screen after the installation finished (after reboot), i cannot use my mouse! also, an error message occur saying that network connection is not available. but, when i restart again and using the "try Ubuntu without installing" in the Live USB, the problems didn't occur. i tried to googling this but failed to find any solution. and yes, i am totally green on Ubuntu and Linux. so, please, help me on this. thanks in advance.

• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • There was an error getting information about "/" while copying to desktop

  Currently running Ubuntu 13.10 after a fresh install/re install due to this problem. The error occurs whenever I try to drag a file from the Ubuntu search( in the launcher ), to the desktop. the whole error message is as follows... "Error while copying. There was an error getting information about “/”." Show more details reveals the following... "The specified location is not supported" I don't understand the problem and can't see any clear way of fixing it. Any and all advice would be appreciated. :)

• logging with Openbox / Gnome shows empty Desktop

  I installed new 12.04 and Openbox. I logged in with GNOME/Openbox and now after system starts I see only Desktop background image and nothing more. When I right click I can do normal GNOME actions like create folder and nothing more really. alt+f2 doesn't start run window though I managed to create a folder and then with Nautilus start terminal but I really don't know what to do next. Two questions: Why doesn't Openbox start properly? How in this situation I can get back to GDM login screen and choose other option to log in?

  I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance! So I have this program on the MAC but I want two users in my team to be able to use this program, is there any way more than one person can VNC or remote desktop or something to the MAC server? Then those two users could both use the program on the mac server. I would need two legal licenses, I guess.

  I was wondering if anyone has come across any articles detailing how to set up a basic game in C++ for use in Android / IPhone / Desktop applications. My thoughts just now are that I would like to make my game as a library and have a different project for each device which just interfaces with this library. You know the kind of thing, bootstrap the program, call some library initialize, load and run routines and occasionally pass some information to the library like input. I was hoping someone would have made a template for this kind of thing but I just had no luck finding one. It seems to me that it's the kind of thing you really only have to do once, so I was hoping someone would have done it for me already.

• Secure PHP environments with PHP-FPM and SFTP

  I'd like to set up secure environments for a small number of untrusted PHP websites on a Debian server. Right now everything runs on the same Apache2 with mod_php5 and vsftpd for administrative file access, so there is room for improvement. The idea is to use nginx instead of apache, SFTP through OpenSSH instead of vsftpd and chrooted (in sshd_config), individual users for each website with their own pool of PHP processes. All these users and nginx are part of the same group. Now in theory I can set 700 permissions on all PHP scripts and 750 on static files that nginx has to serve up. Theoretically, if a website is compromised all the other users' data is safe, right? Are there better solutions that require less setup time and memory per website? Cheers

• Citrix Secure Gateway not redirecting to login URL

  We have an older setup for XenApp - users log in through Citrix Secure Gateway running on a windows box. (We hope to start using a NetScaler soon.) Earlier today, connections to https://citrix.company.com/ starting throwing up a 503 error page, instead of redirecting to https://citrix.company.com/Citrix/XenApp/ If you go directly to the /Citrix/Xenapp/ URL, the user is properly directed to the login page, and can launch apps. We've restarted the service, and rebooted the server. We haven't yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Before we do this, I'm looking for ideas as to how we can get the redirect working again without a fairly major outage window. To make things more interesting, many of our users have Citrix Receiver installed, also pointed at https://citrix.company.com/. Receiver makes itself the default launcher for ICA files, and gives a connection error when it tries to load apps - probably because of the same non-functional rediect?

  Safari tells me that it couldnt open the page, because it couldnt establish a secure connection to the server. However, other browsers (opera, firefox) can open the page. Also, theres nothing in the apache error log. The certificate is selfsigned, and uses standart values. • Secure login for Firefox alternatives

  For some reason, Secure Login 0.9.3. on FF 3.5.4. is relatively buggy (it randomly stops working saying it is not compatible, but continues to work after I uninstall it and reinstall afterwards ... then it stops working after some time. No new extensions were added in the meantime; just BitDefender was installed on the system ... not sure whether he has something to do with it.). What would be good alternatives to it (except RoboForm) which give the same behaviour ? All ideas welcomed.

  Hello, I'm puzzled by this email message that gets quarantined by McAfee Secure Messaging Service (it's based on Postini) for no reason that I can think of. Can anyone explain to me why the final score is so low when none of the filters were triggered? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening? Regards, Martin

  I have a number of secure emails sent to my outlook 2007 client. most arrive fine and display the prompt with regards to granting access to the certificate and then open. today i received two that when i try and open them they crash outlook. i have tried restarting outlook and my computer. please can you give me some ideas of what it could be or how i can troubleshoot this issue. i am working on Vista Utlimate x64. thanks. I'm using the connection from my company, and every while & then I get a pop-up; Secure connection failed. This certificate in not trusted because the certificate issuer isn't trusted. • Problem opening XWindows programs with xming and SSH Secure Shell

  I've installed SSH Secure Shell and xming on my laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit). I'm having trouble starting X Windows applications from the SSH console. I've been able to do it in the past. I've pretty much determined that it's not a server issue because I've tried it on two different servers (both servers are running RHEL 5). Running "echo $DISPLAY" on either server gave me "localhost:10.0". My XLaunch configuration settings are: Multiple Windows, 10 (display number), and Start no client. Once xming has launched, I'll try to execute something like "firefox" and I get this back: The application 'firefox' lost its connection to the display localhost:10.0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. I've already checked to make sure that the X server is running and it is: root 12579 2689 0 Feb14 tty7 00:04:23 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 Additionally, X11 Tunneling has been enabled in SSH as well as SSH 2 connections.

  I have a Linux laptop (Vostro V13) running a Celeron M chip. This is a fine laptop, but running unit tests especially for Rails applications is slow. I want a faster development environment but I don't want to spend too much money. So the choice I have is between $390 for a Linux desktop machine with a Pentium Dual Core Processor E5400 and just paying between $30 and $40 a month to Linode and trying to do development remotely on that server. Can anyone with experience developing server applications using both methods offer any advice?
