  • Is Haskell "mainstream", or is it mainly used by hobbyists and academics?

    - by Asher
I came across a post where someone wrote something inaccurate about Haskell (won't go into it) and he got flammed for it. Which (pleasantly) surprised me. About 3 years ago I read this joke about Haskell: All the haskell programmers in the world can fit into a 747 and if that plane were to crash no one would care... or something along those lines. Which brings me to my question: how healthy is the Haskell community, anyway? Is Haskell "mainstream"? Is it mainly used by hobbiest and academics or someone making some serious money from it (which is the true yardstick of how good a language is - just kidding, geez!)?

  • Django date filter: how come the format used is different from the one in datetime library ???

    - by Sébastien Piquemal
Hello ! For formatting a date using date filter you must use the following format : {{ my_date|date:"Y-m-d" }} If you use strftime from the standard datetime, you have to use the following : my_date.strftime("%Y-%m-%d") So my question is ... isn't it ugly (I guess it is because of the % that is used also for tags, and therefore is escaped or something) ? But that's not the main question ... I would like to use the same DATE_FORMAT parametrized in settings.py all over the project, but it therefore seems that I cannot ! Is there a work around (for example a filter that removes the % after the date has been formatted like {{ my_date|date|dream_filter }}, because if I just use DATE_FORMAT = "%Y-%m-%d" I got something like %2001-%6-%12)?

  • In SQL / MySQL, can a Left Outer Join be used to find out the duplicates when there is no Primary ID

    - by Jian Lin
    I would like to try using Outer Join to find out duplicates in a table: If a table has Primary Index ID, then the following outer join can find out the duplicate names: mysql> select * from gifts; +--------+------------+-----------------+---------------------+ | giftID | name | filename | effectiveTime | +--------+------------+-----------------+---------------------+ | 2 | teddy bear | bear.jpg | 2010-04-24 04:36:03 | | 3 | coffee | coffee123.jpg | 2010-04-24 05:10:43 | | 6 | beer | beer_glass.png | 2010-04-24 05:18:12 | | 10 | heart | heart_shape.jpg | 2010-04-24 05:11:29 | | 11 | ice tea | icetea.jpg | 2010-04-24 05:19:53 | | 12 | cash | cash.png | 2010-04-24 05:27:44 | | 13 | chocolate | choco.jpg | 2010-04-25 04:04:31 | | 14 | coffee | latte.jpg | 2010-04-27 05:49:52 | | 15 | coffee | espresso.jpg | 2010-04-27 06:03:03 | +--------+------------+-----------------+---------------------+ 9 rows in set (0.00 sec) mysql> select * from gifts g1 LEFT JOIN (select * from gifts group by name) g2 on g1.giftID = g2.giftID where g2.giftID IS NULL; +--------+--------+--------------+---------------------+--------+------+----------+---------------+ | giftID | name | filename | effectiveTime | giftID | name | filename | effectiveTime | +--------+--------+--------------+---------------------+--------+------+----------+---------------+ | 14 | coffee | latte.jpg | 2010-04-27 05:49:52 | NULL | NULL | NULL | NULL | | 15 | coffee | espresso.jpg | 2010-04-27 06:03:03 | NULL | NULL | NULL | NULL | +--------+--------+--------------+---------------------+--------+------+----------+---------------+ 2 rows in set (0.00 sec) But what if the table doesn't have a Primary Index ID, then can an outer join still be used to find out duplicates?

  • Generic Method to find the tuples used for computation in Postgres?

    - by Rahul
If I have a table col1 | name | pay ------+------------------+------ 1 | Steve Jobs | 1006 2 | Mike Markkula | 1007 3 | Mike Scott | 1978 4 | John Sculley | 1983 5 | Michael Spindler | 1653 The user executes a sum query which sums the pay of people getting paid more than $1500. Is there a way to also implicitly know which tuples have been used which satisfy the condition for sum ? I know you can separately write another query to just return the primary key ids which satisfy the condition. But, Is there any other way to do that in the same query ? probably rewrite the query in some way ? or... any suggestion ?

  • Have different fallback language than the keys used in NSLocalizedString(@"Text aka. key",@"Descript

    - by Allisone
I use everywhere NSLocalizedString(@"Text in deutsch",@"das Textfeld Text in deutsch") I have two Localizable.strings files. One for german and one for english. What I realized now is. If you have a german iPhone, you get the german text, if you have your iPhone set to english you get the english text. But if you have lets say french, then you would get the german text, too because I use german as the keys, right ? Is there a way to set english as fallback language instead of the german one used everywhere in my code ? (I have so many occurences of NSLocalizedString that it would be a pain to change the keys now everywhere (in code, in Localized.string.en and in Localized.string.de))

  • Why isn't wchar_t widely used in code for Linux / related platforms?

    - by Ninefingers
This intrigues me, so I'm going to ask - for what reason is wchar_t not used so widely on Linux/Linux-like systems as it is on Windows? Specifically, the Windows API uses wchar_t internally whereas I believe Linux does not and this is reflected in a number of open source packages using char types. My understanding is that given a character c which requires multiple bytes to represent it, then in a char[] form c is split over several parts of char* whereas it forms a single unit in wchar_t[]. Is it not easier, then, to use wchar_t always? Have I missed a technical reason that negates this difference? Or is it just an adoption problem?

  • ASP.NET Web User Control with Javascript used multiple times on a page - How to make javascript func

    - by Jason Summers
I think I summed up the question in the title. Here is some further elaboration... I have a web user control that is used in multiple places, sometimes more than once on a given page. The web user control has a specific set of JavaScript functions (mostly jQuery code) that are containted within *.js files and automatically inserted into page headers. However, when I want to use the control more than once on a page, the *.js files are included 'n' number of times and, rightly so, the browser gets confused as to which control it's meant to be executing which function on. What do I need to do in order to resolve this problem? I've been staring at this all day and I'm at a loss. All comments greatly appreciated. Jason

  • Someone explain to me the meanings behind the naming conventions used in .net?

    - by IbrarMumtaz
I need someone to explain the following names; Asynchronous Delegates. Asynchronous methods. Asynchronous events. I'm currently going over this for my 70-536 exam and I am covering all my bases so far. The threading chapter and online resources have been good to me on my second read through. Still though, the names used above mean absolutely nothing to me? I would really appreciate the meaning behind the word 'Asynchronous' and its relevance to Delegates, methods and events. Feel free to go into as much detail as you like. Thanks, Ibrar

  • Can MySQL / SQL's short hand of "Using" be used without saying "Inner Join" ?

    - by Jian Lin
    The following 2 statements are to join using gifts.giftID = sentgifts.giftID: mysql> select * from gifts, sentgifts using (giftID); ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'using (giftID)' at line 1 and the second one: mysql> select * from gifts INNER JOIN sentgifts using (giftID); +--------+------------+----------------+---------------------+--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+ | giftID | name | filename | effectiveTime | sentID | whenSent | fromID | toID | trytryWhen | +--------+------------+----------------+---------------------+--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+ | 2 | teddy bear | bear.jpg | 2010-04-24 04:36:03 | 4 | 2010-04-24 | NULL | 111 | 2010-04-24 03:10:42 | | 6 | beer | beer_glass.png | 2010-04-24 05:18:12 | 5 | 2010-03-03 | 11 | 22 | 2010-03-03 00:00:00 | | 6 | beer | beer_glass.png | 2010-04-24 05:18:12 | 6 | 2010-04-24 | 11 | 222 | 2010-04-24 03:54:49 | | 6 | beer | beer_glass.png | 2010-04-24 05:18:12 | 7 | 2010-04-24 | 1 | 2 | 2010-04-24 03:58:45 | +--------+------------+----------------+---------------------+--------+------------+--------+------+---------------------+ 4 rows in set (0.00 sec) Can the first statement also use the "using" shorthand? It seems that when it is used then the word "Inner Join" must be specified... but the first statement is actually an inner join?

  • Can Entity Framework be used for the purpose of entity/schema definition at application runtime?

    - by Kabeer
Hello. Can 'Entity Framework' be used for the purpose of entity definition at application runtime? Ok, to make it simple, here is what I want to achieve: My application is a product. I should be able to define entities at runtime on the basis of inputs gathered from an 'authoring' user (in effect this means 'model first' approach). These entities are of course persistable. Further, after having defined the entities and their relationships, I should be able to make complex queries across them for many reasons, including reports. Is the above possible and how? So far what I have realized is that there is a dependency on Visual Studio.

  • Which Joomla module can be used to show articles with thumbnail?

    - by KoolKabin
hi guys, I am trying to implement ja_nickel joomla template in my site. here is the preview of ja_nickel template: http://demo.ijoomlahost.com/ja-nickel/ I want my latest news articles to be displayed in the place of top information block. I think in that template they are using a thumbnail image, title and content. In general articles we have only title and content. So which module can be used to perform that work and how? I want image, title and content in an article but don't know which provides it. OR can we just merge the title and content both of normal article and display the image of article like that?

  • Is Django's manage.py syncdb or South used to create the test database?

    - by Thierry Lam
With Django 1.1.1 and South 0.62, running a test from the CLI usually have the following output: Creating table some_model Installing index for my_app.SomeModel model . ----- Ran 1 test in 1s OK After upgrading to South 0.7, the output is invoking South's migration: Creating table some_model Installing index for my_app.SomeModel model Migrating... Running migrations for my_app: - Migrating forwards to 0001_initial > my_app:0001_initial - Loading initial data for my_app Migrated: - my_app . ----- Ran 1 test in 1s OK To create the test DB, has the test always used South migration in the past(before South 0.7) even if the output is not explicitly being shown?

  • Tool used to retrieve code metrics in xUnit Test Patterns?

    - by leeand00
I'm reading xUnit Test Patterns by Gerard Meszaros. On one of the pages he refers to some software metrics: While the need to wrap lines to keep them at 65 characters makes this code look even longer than it really is, it is still unnecessarily long. It contains 25 executable statements including initialized declarations, 6 lines of control statements, 4 in-line comments, and 2 lines to declare the test method—giving a total of 37 lines of unwrapped source code. Short of counting the statements to find these metrics, does anybody have any idea if he used a particular tool to calculate the metrics? (If you have any suggestions for tools that will count similar metrics, I'm looking for one that works on Java, Javascript and C++) Thanks!

  • What is lisp used for today and where do you think it's going ?

    - by ldigas
Never been a lisp user, so don't take me as too dense while reading this. But what is lisp used for today ? I know there are several variants of the language in existence, at least one which will keep it alive commercially for a while longer (AutoLisp, VisualLisp - pretty big support from Autodesk) ... but I don't meet everyday people using it. So if you can shed some light on the matter - what is it's primary target market nowadays ? And what do you believe its future will be ... will it become just another support language in few apps, or is it going somewhere ? Also, apart from "an editor whose name shall not be spoken" what other apps keep it as a support language ?

  • What programming language is used to design google algorithm?

    - by AKN
It is known that google has best searching & indexing algorithm. The also have good relevancy. They are also quicker in getting down the latest results. All that's fine. What programming language (c, c++, java, etc...) & database (oracle, MySQL, etc...) they have used in achieving this. Since they have to manipulate with volume of data quickly and effectively. Though I'm not looking for their indepth architecture (if in case violates their company policies) an overview of all such things could be useful. Anybody please add you valuable suggestions and insight on this?

  • Is there a way to access the locale used by gettext under windows ?

    - by phtrivier
I have a program where i18n is handled by gettext. The program works fine, however for some reason I need to know the name of the locale used by gettext at runtime (something like 'fr_FR') under win32. I looked into gettext sources, and there is a quite frightening function that computes it on all platforms (gl_locale_name, in a C file called "localename.h/c"). However, this file does not seem to be installed alongside gettext or libintl, so I can't seem to call the function. Is there another function provided by gettext to get this value ? Or in another package (boost, glib, anything ?) (On a related note, there is a thing called std::locale in the C++ standard library, and according to the doc calling std::locale("") should create a locale with the settings of the system, unless I am mistaken ... but then the name is 'C' under windows. Is it a viable way of getting the locale name ? What I am doing wrong ?)

  • What is the algorithm used by the memberwise equality test in .NET structs?

    - by Damian Powell
What is the algorithm used by the memberwise equality test in .NET structs? I would like to know this so that I can use it as the basis for my own algorithm. I am trying to write a recursive memberwise equality test for arbitrary objects (in C#) for testing the logical equality of DTOs. This is considerably easier if the DTOs are structs (since ValueType.Equals does mostly the right thing) but that is not always appropriate. I would also like to override comparison of any IEnumerable objects (but not strings!) so that their contents are compared rather than their properties. This has proven to be harder than I would expect. Any hints will be greatly appreciated. I'll accept the answer that proves most useful or supplies a link to the most useful information. Thanks.

  • Which rdfa parser for java that supports currently used rdfa attributes?

    - by lennyks
I am building an app in Java using Jena for semantic information scraping. I am looking for a RDFa parser that would allow me to correctly extract all the rdfa statements. Specifically, one that extracts info about namespaces used and presuming that rdfa tags are correct in the page produces correct triples, ones that distinguish between object and data properties. I went through all rdfa parsers from the site http://rdfa.info/wiki/Consume for Java. They all struggle to extract any rdfa statements and if they do not crash, Jena RDFa parser shows plenty of errors and then dies a terrible death, the data is of little use as it is incorrectly processed and generally mixed up. I am newbie in this area so please be gentle:) I was also thinking of using a library written in different language but then again I don't really know how to plug it into Java code. Any suggestions?

  • How to 'hide' spurious "declared but never used" warnings?

    - by Roddy
    I'm using the C++Builder compiler which has a minor bug that certain static const items from system header files can cause spurious "xyzzy is declared but never used" warnings. I'm trying to get my code 100% warning free, so want a way of masking these particular warnings (note - but not by simply turning off the warning!) Also, I can't modify the header files. I need a way of 'faking' the use of the items, preferably without even knowing their type. As an example, adding this function to my .cpp modules fixes warnings for these four items, but it seems a bit 'ad-hoc'. Is there a better and preferably self-documenting way of doing this? static int fakeUse() { return OneHour + OneMinute + OneSecond + OneMillisecond; }

    - by zxcvbnm
I'm trying to convert bmp files in a folder to jpg, then delete the old files. The code works fine, except it can't delete the bmp's. DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(args[0]); FileInfo[] files = di.GetFiles("*.bmp"); foreach (FileInfo file in files) { string newFile = file.FullName.Replace("bmp", "jpg"); Bitmap bm = (Bitmap)Image.FromFile(file.FullName); bm.Save(newFile, ImageFormat.Jpeg); } for (int i = 0; i < files.Length; i++) files[i].Delete(); The files aren't being used by another program/process like the error indicates, so I'm assuming the problem is here. But to me the code seems fine, since I'm doing everything sequentially. This is all that there is to the program too, so the error can't be caused by code elsewhere.

  • Using an empty keystore password used to be possible?

    - by TomTasche
When signing an apk after a long break from Android development I was surprised that I'm no longer able to enter an empty keystore password to unlock it. Is it just me or has this been possible before? If so, when did that change and how can I manage to unlock the keystore anyway? Some background: maybe I'm just crazy and didn't use an empty password for the keystore before, but the one and only possible password that I could have been using instead doesn't work either (I swear, there's no chance I'd have used another password!).

  • Can Atom be used for things besides syndication feeds?

    - by greim
Purely in terms of its conceptual model, is the purpose of Atom (and RSS) only to provide a time-sequential series of frequently-updated items, such as "most recent blog posts" or "last twenty SVN commits," or can Atom be legitimately used to represent static and/or non-time-sequential listings/indices? As an example, "index of files under this directory", "dog breeds" or "music genres". Even if there's a date associated with the items, like a file's last modified date, what if you don't necessarily want time to be the primary consideration when you represent that model to your users? The context for this is passing around (generating and consuming) lists of things in a REST-ful environment, hopefully using a well-understood format, where "date something was created/updated" is a pertinent detail, but not the primary consideration. I realize there's probably no right answer, but wanted to get some perspectives. Thanks.

  • What tricks can be used to type and edit code faster?

    - by Thomas
As Jeff Atwood noted, we are typists first, programmers second. Fast typing and editing may not be essential to be a good programmer, but it certainly helps. I noticed that I consciously and subconsciously use various tricks to get my intent across to the computer as fast as possible. What tricks can be used to type and edit code faster? I'm hoping to collect a nice list here that we can all learn from, so that we can be ever so slightly more productive. One trick per answer please! (This is not about typing speed in general. There are other questions about that. It's also not about general answers like "learn your editor's shortcut keys". Think of this topic as micro-optimizations for specific cases. See my own answers for examples of what I mean.)

  • Which has been the most reliable, fastest Windows C++ profiler that you have used?

    - by carleeto
I need to profile a real time C++ app on Windows. Most of the available profilers are either terribly expensive, total overkill, or both. I don't need any .NET stuff. Since it is a real time app, I need the profiler to be as fast as possible. It would be excellent if it integrated in some way with Visual Studio 2005/2008, but that's not necessary. If this description reminds you of a profiler that you have used, I would really like to know about it. I am hoping to draw from people's use of C++ profilers on Windows to pinpoint one that will do the job. Thanks.
