  • EFS Remote Encryption

    We have been trying to setup EFS across our domain. Unfortunately Reading/Writing file over network share does not work, we get an "Access Denied" error. Another worrying fact is that I managed to get it working for 1 machine but no other would work. The machines are all Windows 2008R2, running as VM under ESXi host. According to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457116.aspx#EHAA We setup the involved machine to be trusted for delegation The user are not restricted and can be trusted for delegation. The users have logged-in on both side and can read/write encrypted files without issues locally. I enabled Kerberos logging in the registry and this is the relevant logs that I get on the machine that has the encrypted files. In order for all certificate that the user possess (Only Key Name changes): Event ID 5058: Audit Success, "Other System Events" Key file operation. The problem is that the users I using at the moment can not change their password.

    I've got a server running Windows Server 2008, and use it mainly for sharing files throughout the domain from a number of disks. It's running on VMware ESXi 4.0, in case that matters. My problem is that when I log in to the server to check user permissions etc, the access speed the files on the remote disks almost grinds to a halt. I havn't been able to measure the speeds, but I would guess it slows down to about 100kB/s as soon as I log in. This is on a gigabit network and the problems are equal for all users, even the ones connected to the same switch as the server. I've assigned 2 GB RAM to the server, and reserved it 1,5Ghz processor power. I don't have to do anything special on the server for this halt to occur. How can I make sure file sharing is prioritized on the server, so no matter what applications I'm using it will always make sure file sharing works properly? Could this be a VMware issue?

  • CUDA linking error - Visual Express 2008 - nvcc fatal due to (null) configuration file

    Hi, I've been searching extensively for a possible solution to my error for the past 2 weeks. I have successfully installed the Cuda 64-bit compiler (tools) and SDK as well as the 64-bit version of Visual Studio Express 2008 and Windows 7 SDK with Framework 3.5. I'm using windows XP 64-bit. I have confirmed that VSE is able to compile in 64-bit as I have all of the 64-bit options available to me using the steps on the following website: (since Visual Express does not inherently include the 64-bit packages) http://jenshuebel.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/visual-c-2008-express-edition-and-64-bit-targets/ I have confirmed the 64-bit compile ability since the "x64" is available from the pull-down menu under "Tools-Options-VC++ Directories" and compiling in 64-bit does not result in the entire project being "skipped". I have included all the needed directories for 64-bit cuda tools, 64 SDK and Visual Express (\VC\bin\amd64).   • Problem using SQLDMO/Vb6 against SQL Server 2008

    I have a client, that uses SQLDMO for a portion of a custom application that was written against SQL Server 2000, and they recently upgraded to SQL Server 2008. The majority of the app still runs fine (doesn't use SQLDMO), but the admin functions which rely on SQLDMO stopped working. I installed the SQL2005 backward compatibility pack, and now SQLDMO partially works, i.e. I can run "select" type queries, but any "Update" queries fail with the error message: to connect to the server you must use SQL Server management studio or sql server management objects (SMO) Any thoughts? Should the backward compatibility pack give me ALL the functionality back, or is this a known issue? BTW: I realize SQLDMO has been deprecated and will go away next release, none-the-less I need to do what I can to solve the problem at hand.

  • Confluence or apache on win server 2008 cant find scripts and images :(

    I am a newbie to both Tomcat and Apache. I have set the virtual hosts as described in Here. And JIRA works fine when i browse the URL jira.agmlab.com. However when i try to access Confluence(3.4.5) with confluence.agmlab.com the pages come in plain html, i can login and browse pages but there is no css or js so that my confluence pages look very ugly. what can possibly cause this and how to fix this? here is my virtual hosts definitions : # # Virtual Hosts # # If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your # machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Can it be something related with the permissions defined in Win Server 2008 ? maybe there is not enough rights (such as read execute ) in some users, directories ??

  • Windows 8 Live Accounts and the actual Windows Account

    As if Windows Security wasn't confusing enough, in Windows 8 we get thrown yet another curve ball with Windows Live accounts to logon. When I set up my Windows 8 machine I originally set it up with a 'real', non-live account that I always use on my Windows machines. I did this mainly so I have a matching account for resources around my home and intranet network so I could log on to network resources properly. At some point later I decided to set up Windows Live security just to see how changes things. Windows wants you to use Windows Live Windows 8 logins are required in order for the Windows RT account info to work. Not that I care - since installing Windows 8 I've maybe spent 10 minutes with Windows RT because - well it's pretty freaking sucky on the desktop. From shitty apps to mis-managed screen real estate I can't say that there's anything compelling there to date, but then I haven't looked that hard either. Anyway… I set up the Windows Live account to see if that changes things. It does - I do get all my live logins to work from Live Account so that Twitter and Facebook posts and pictures and calendars all show up on live tiles on the start screen and in the actual apps. That's nice-ish, but hardly that exciting given that all of the apps tied to those live tiles are average at best. And it would have been nice if all of this could be done without being forced into running with a Windows Live User Account - this all feels like strong-arming you into moving into Microsofts walled garden… and that's probably what it's meant to do. Who am I? The real problem to me though is that these Windows Live and raw Windows User accounts are a bit unpredictable especially when it comes to developer information about the account and which credentials to use. So for example Windows reports folder security like this: Notice it's showing my Windows Live account. Now if I go to Edit and try to add my Windows user account (rstrahl) it'll just automatically show up as the live account. On the other hand though the underlying system sees everything as my real Windows account. After I switched to a Windows Live login account and I have to login to Windows with my Live account, what do you suppose this returns?Console.WriteLine(Environment.UserName); It returns my raw Windows user account (rstrahl). All my permissions, all my actual settings and the desktop console altogether run under that account. If I look in TaskManager (or Process Explorer for me) I see: Everything running on the desktop shell with my login running under my Windows user account. I suppose it makes sense, but where is that association happening? When I switched to a Windows Live account, nowhere did I associate my real account with the Live account - it just happened. And looking through the account configuration dialogs I can't find any reference to the raw Windows account. Other than switching back I see no mention anywhere of the raw Windows account - everything refers to the Live account. Right then, clear as potato soup! So this is who you really are! The problem is that in some situations this schizophrenic account behavior gets a bit weird. Today I was running a local Web application in IIS that uses Windows Authentication - I tried to log-in with my real Windows account login because that's what I'm used to using with WINDOWS freaking Authentication through IIS. But… it failed. I checked my IIS settings, my apps login settings and I just could not for the life of me get into the site with my Windows username. That is until I finally realized that I should try using my Windows Live credentials instead. And that worked. So now in this Windows Authentication dialog I had to type in my Live ID and password, which is - just weird. Then in IIS if I look at a Trace page (or in my case my app's Status page) I see that the logged on account is - my Windows user account. What's really annoying about this is that in some places it uses the live account in other places it uses my Windows account. If I remote desktop into my Web server online - I have to use the local authentication dialog but I have to put in my real Windows credentials not the Live account. Oh yes, it's all so terribly intuitive and logical… So in summary, when you log on with a Live account you are actually mapped to an underlying Windows user. In any application if you check the user name it'll be the underlying user account (not sure what happens in a Windows RT app or even what mechanism is used there to get the user name info).  When logging on to local machine resource with user name and password you have to use your Live IDs even if the permissions on the resources are mapped to your underlying Windows account.     When trying to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 to a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on a virtual machine, the installer will start:   But then after about 20 seconds I receive the following error message: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ----------------------------- SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ Searching for this issue I found that several people have the same problem and there is no clear solution.  Some had success with closing windows or Internet Explorer but that didn’t work for me; what did work is to make sure the SQL Server 2008 “Please wait while SQL Server 2008 Setup processes the current operation.” dialog is selected and has the focus when it first shows up.  Selected (with the current focus) it looks like this:   Without focus the dialog looks like this: Add a comment if you find out any information about how to consistently get around this issue or why it is happening in the first place.

  • How to fix Windows 2008 R2 show less memory than available

    I've got Win2008 R2 64bit installed on Dell R410 server with 8GB of RAM. Dell Open Manage shows 8GB total and 4GB available for use, In Windows Control Panel, System i see 64bit and 8GB of RAM while in Windows Task Manager at Performance tab there is 4GB of memory available. Dell support has made some checks and told me that if BIOS shows 8Gb of RAM and indeed BIOS does then it's operational system issue. Tried to search online for resolution but none found. Please help, thanks

  • WDS 2008 R2 DHCP Error

    Im having a problem where I get the error 'An error occurred while obtaining an IP address from the DHCP server. Please check to ensure that there is an operational DHCP server on this network segment' when booting from a standard WDS boot.wim image taken from a Windows 7 DVD. I am using Server 2008 R2 and am adding the drivers to the boot using WDS, but also have the problem if the drivers are injected beforehand using DISM. When the error occurs I can shift + F10 and IPCONFIG and see it HAS picked up an internal IP from DHCP. Seems maybe it is timing out before it gets the IP? DHCP server is not on the WDS box but is in the same subnet. As per some fixes I have read I enabled RSTP on my switches but that didnt help. I have included the end of setupact.log to see if any of you have any ideas. Seems to be failing but as I say, the network IS initialized as I can see the internal IP assigned by DHCP when running IPCONFIG. I dont suppose theres any way of increasing the timeout?   • MSMQ on Win2008 R2 won't receive messages from older clients

    I'm battling a really weird problem here. I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Message Queueing installed. On another machine, running Windows 2003 is a service that is set up to send messages to a public queue on the 2008 server. However, messages never show up on the server. I've written a small console app that just sends a "Hello World" message to a test queue on the 2008 machine. Running this app on XP or 2003 results in absolutely nothing. However, when I try running the app on my Windows 7 machine, a message is delivered just fine. I've been through all sorts of security settings, disabled firewalls on all machines etc. The event log shows nothing of interest, and no exceptions are being thrown on the clients. Running a packet sniffer (WireShark) on the server reveals only a little. When trying to send a message from XP or 2003 I only see an ICMP error "Port Unreachable" on port 3527 (which I gather is an MQPing packet?). After that, silence. Wireshark shows a nice little stream of packets when I try from my Win7 client (as expected - messages get delivered just fine from Win7). I've enabled MSMQ End2End logging on the server, but only entries from the messages sent from my Win7 machine are appearing in the log. So somehow it seems that messages are being dropped silently somewhere along the route from XP or 2003 to my 2008 server. Does anyone have any clues as to what might be causing this mysterious behaviour? -- Jesper

  • How can I get Virtual Server 2005 R2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2?

    For various reasons (old VT-less hardware, and .vhd support) we need to still run Virtual Server 2005 R2. It's just for lab/demo work but we'd like to run the host on the newest Windows OS possible. It's documented and at least partially supported to run the old Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 (non-R2). I've done that before. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the scenario in the title above to work.     We have a new Dell R710 server that came with the following storage configuration: 8 x 146GB SAS 10k 6Gbps disks 1 x Perc H700 Integrated Controller (2 x 4 disks - 2 ports each supporting 4 disks) What would be the optimal configuration if we were just after performance? What would be the optimal configuration if we were after performance but wanted data resilience. As per 2 above but with a hot standby disk? We plan to run Windows 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Maximising storage capacity isn't a prime concern.

    Hi, this is a very newbie question, sorry! I need to create an aspx website based con C# and am calling some webservices based on some DLL's I already have. Beforem purchasing Visual Studio, I decided to try Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express (is this ok?) creating a Web Application ASP.NET based on Visual C#. I created the form to enter the data which is submitted when clicking the process button. At this point I need to call stuff from the DLL, which I have added in the Solution Explorer via Add Reference, selecting the DLL from the COM list. But whenever I run the project, I always get the error "the type or namespace xxx cannot be found - maybe a using directive or assembler directive is missing" when trying to create the object. What is my stupid mistake? Thanks!

We have already tested on isolated machines, but we have not yet been allowed to add the machines to the domain. Before we approach the networking group to discuss adding Windows 8 machines to the domain, we need more information on what changes / issues to expect in moving from Windows 7. Are there any aspects we should consider that are specific to Windows 8 clients? Thus far, I've gotten the following feedback: Windows Administrative Shares are disabled New set of Group Policy templates Changes to proxy server settings Additional items along these lines would be helpful. We're not looking for items related to Windows GUI changes, but instead primarily items related to having the machine live and be used on the domain.

  • Why won't my Windows 7 KMS key work on my Server 2008 KMS server?

    Our Microsoft volume licensing site was recently updated to include our Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 KMS keys. We have an existing KMS server running on Server 2008 (not R2). In an attempt to be proactive about supporting the new OSes in our environment, I unregistered the old KMS key with slmgr.vbs and tried registering the new key. The registration failed with Error 0xC004F050. The description for that error was "The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid." What's wrong? I've checked and double checked that for typos against what is listed on the Volume Licensing website.

    I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers. EDIT: added after Gregs comments regarding setacl below If I log into the TS server as Testusr and open Admin Tools Printer Admin (as administrator) and then type mydomain\testusr and the testusr's password, then I can change the ownership of the printer queue and set testusr as the owner.   • Unable to telnet out on port 25 on windows server 2008

    Hi All, I just setup a Windows 2008 R2 server and am trying to get a basic mail server up and running so that I can send emails from my applications. I setup a virtual SMTP server in IIS6 and tried doing a local telnet to port 25, which seemed to work fine. There were no errors during this stage and I can see the mail message appear in the Queue folder. The problem is that mail never leaves the Queue folder. I then tried to telnet to a remote mail server on port 25 but couldn't connect:- telnet 209.85.227.27 25 Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connection failed) I checked my firewall and there is a default setting to allow all outgoing TCP traffic with no restriction. I even setup a specific rule for outgoing port 25 traffic but to no avail. I then ran a SmtpDiag.exe command .\SmtpDiag.exe [email protected] [email protected] and received the following output Searching for Exchange external DNS settings. Computer name is WIN-SERVERNAME. Failed to connect to the domain controller. Error: 8007054b Checking SOA for gmail.com. Checking external DNS servers. Checking internal DNS servers. SOA serial number match: Passed. Checking local domain records. Checking MX records using TCP: gmail.com. Checking MX records using UDP: gmail.com. Both TCP and UDP queries succeeded. Local DNS test passed. We want to build a web site that will contain: site, database, uploads, numerous background services that would have to collect information from uploads and from some other sites, parse them etc...I doubt that there are portlets that fits our specific need so we will have to make them our self. So, questions: 1. Deployment ( and difference in cost if possible), is deploying portals much more easier then web app ( java or .net) 2. Server load. Does portal consume much of server power ( and can you strip portal of thing that you do not use) 3. Implementation and developing of portlets. Can u make all the things that you could have done in java or .net? 4. General thoughts of when to use portals and when classic web app. Tnx all in advence...

  • Intermittent Windows Server 2008 BSOD and restart

    Our EC2 Instance (Windows Server 2008) crashed multiple times for the past 3 months (last time was today at 1:05 EST). Upon reviewing MEMORY.DMP file we noticed that possible cause of the crashes is rhelnet.sys (RedHat PV NIC Driver). Server's Event Viewer has the following records right after the crash: Critical - Kernel Power: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. BugCheck: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x000000000000002d, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff88001402d14). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 100113-35849-01. Could this be a hardware issue? Would it help if we stop and start the instance? Or is this more likely that this is caused by the software running on the system? [Update 10.01.2013] Amazon Rep suggested to update RH drivers to Citrix PV drivers on our instance: Upgrading PV Drivers [Update 10.08.2013] We performed a drivers upgrade on the cloned instance. Right after the upgrade we noticed the following errors in our Event viewer: Xennet6 errors in Event Viewer (Event ID# 5001) After digging a bit more I found this article suggesting to install the latest Citrix drivers. Unfortunately, this didn't help us at all and our cloned instance became unresponsive. [Update 10.08.2013 2] I recreated an instance and updated PV drivers again. After searching on Internet I found this article where Amazon Rep explains that: "Event ID 5001 from source Xennet6 cannot be found" message does not indicate anything wrong, just that the PV driver is looking for a feature that we have not implemented in our version of Xen. I will keep my test system running for a while to see if there any issues with it.
