• Windows 7 - Windwos XP - sharing - why isn't working?

  Hi! This is seems to be "hardware" and not "software" / "programming" question, but I need to use this share in my programs, so it is "close to programming". We had an XP based wireless network. The server is XP Professional, the clients are XP Home (Notebooks). This was working well with folder sharing (with user rights, not simple share). Then we replaced the one of the notebook with Win7/X64 notebook. First time this can reach the server, and the another client too. Later I went to another sites, and connect to another servers, another networks. And then, when I return to this network, I saw that I cannot connect to this server. Nothing of resources I see, and when try to dbl click on this computer, I got login window, where I can write anything, never I can login... The interesting part, that: Another XP home can see the server, can login as quest, or with other user. The server can see the XP home notebook. The Win7 can see the notebook's shared folders, and XP home can see the Win7 shared folders. The server can see the Win7 folders, BUT: the Win7 cannot see the server folders. Cannot see the resources too... The Win7 is in "work networking group", the group name is not mshome. I tried everything on the server, I tried to remove MS client, restore it with simple sharing, set guest password, etc., but I lost the possibilities to access this server from Win7. Does anyone have any idea what I need to see, what I need to set to access these resource - to use them in my programs? Thanks for every info, link: dd

• Redirect specific domains with DNS

  Currently we filter internet content using OpenDNS, our internal Windows DC/DNS servers point to the router's DNS, which then points to the OpenDNS servers. This works well to block all computer's on the network equally. New issue. We now need to separate what computers can go to what sites. So facebook is blocked for everyone right now, but I need to open it up to the 3 community computers now. The 3 community computers will be on an untrusted network seperate from the company computers so they can have their own DNS server, from their own router. The issue is though they still must connect to the internet using the same IP address. So OpenDNS sees the same IP and blocks them the same way. We are looking into getting a second IP, but it's not likely an option without going up to the next major level with our ISP which we don't want to do. My thought is this. Can I setup a DNS server on the untrusted network, and then depending on the request that comes in, have it send it to either OpenDNS or our ISP's DNS? Example www.facebook.com and www.youtube.com are both on the OpenDNS blacklist. So if they go to www.youtube.com, the local DNS server goes to the ISP's DNS to get the IP and thus the client gets the right IP and can go to the site. This would be manually entered for each allowed site thus creating a white list. Then if they go to www.facebook.com, since the local DNS server does not find an entry, it sends the request to OpenDNS, which then sees the site is on the blacklist, and thus sends the it's blocked webpage. The local DNS server can be either Bind on Linux or MS DNS on Window 2008. If this can be done, can you give some direction as well as I've never setup a DNS such as this before. Thanks

• Is there an high quality natural text reader for the mac?

  I'm reading about 150 pages of text on screen, every day. I will have to read about 15.000 in the next upcoming months. No joke. Well, the problem is this: I suffer from a sort of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which forces me to read every sentence up to 10 times until I really get it. Mac OS X Snow Leopard has a built-in text reader with the name "Alex". Although it is already pretty good quality, I know there are far better natural sounding voices out there. I have heard already voices that are absolutely amazing compared to Alex. They're so good, that you can't tell anymore the difference between a real person or a computer. Alex still has this "metal factor" in its voice, which makes my ears hurt after 8 hours of listening. The next problem with Alex is, that he never makes a break after a sentence. Also, it's not possible to think about a sentence and then continue reading. It's also not possible to have him repeat a sentence, without tedious text selection and shortcut usage. Actually, the best tool I can imagine would have the option to read a sentence and move on to the next one after pressing a special key, OR repeating the previously one after pressing a special key. That would help so much! And if that's even with one of those bell lab / AT&T / whatever super-natural voices, even better! But it would be already a great relief if there was just a better tool to control Alex. To let him make breaks after sentences or let him speak big chunks of text sentence-by-sentence with fine-grained control over repetition and moving on. Is there anything?

• MSE updating fails, no warning or error message.

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit. For the last couple of days, MSE doesn't fails to update, remaining stuck at version 1.75.119 I presume that an error log is created somewhere, or an event log, but I don't know where to find those. It just says "connection failed". Tried it at home, at work and friends places, but never works. Restarted computer a lot of times now, checked for Microsoft Updates in general, but nothing shows up. EDIT: I've opened a bounty for this, because I really don't know what to do anymore. The oldest answer(the long post) here did not work. Besides this problem, I'm having trouble using MSI installers too. I've had to add the SYSTEM group to a lot of maps and give them full control, but shouldn't the SYSTEM already be there? Also, I had to remove the "read-only" attribute from the ProgramData and Users folders, add the SYSTEM group there too and give them full control. Only then will the MSI install work and even then, it says I doesn't have the rights to create a shortcut on the desktop. Don't know what I need to modify and where for that. I'm saying this because I don't know how MSE updates, but if they use MSI files to do that, that might explain things. The SYSTEM group remains added, but every time I take away the read only attribute, click OK and check the settings again, read-only is still active... That's all I know. • PLS HLP Chrome & Internet Explorer won't connect after infected Fire Fox works.

  HI Guys Please Help I am pretty New Here. I'm having problems. Cannot connect with chrome or Internet Explorer. Fire Fox works fine. It seems it happens when I was infected by a "Trojan Horse Generic 17.BWIK" and a "Trojan Horse SHeur.UHL", when I reply to a post for a Thread I posted. I have removed the treat and got Fire Fox working, "so i think", but not G'Chrome or IE still cannot connect. I do not want to loose Chrome History so re-setting would be my last option and uninstall and install will be out of the question. Is there a way around this? I am using XP Pro on a desktop and DSL connection. Be aware from "Fake_Antispyware.FAH", which I had on my computer, I just found out while doing this, according to my AVG anti-virus security. Please can you direct me for a cure. Thank you in advance for your sincere willingness contributions.

• 8007064c(2011) and 80280007(2009) persistant after all known repairs

  I'm on Windows 7 Home x64, and have ran into a major issue with Live Messenger(which I use daily). I have full offline installers for both 2011 and the last Wave 3 2009(14.0.8117.0416) Suites. Both give the following errors: Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer(official): An unknown error occured. Error:0x8007064c Source WLXSuite WL 2009 offline installer(official): You already have a more recent version of Windows Live. Error: OnCatalogResult:0x80280007 Next steps: If you want to install this older version, first uninstall any later versions that are on your computer. Get help with this error The 2011 installer also says it is updating messenger, I don't select anything else. Then last 2009 installer says their is a newer version that needs uninstalled even after the following procedures. MS Help pages provided all basically lead to using uninstall from control panel. Which I've uninstalled all Live components including watcom safety scanner and portable SQL from. I've followed online instructions for manually deleting folders from Program Files(x86), Appdata, and some others under \User\All Users and the one for the one account on the machine. I've used CCcleaner 3.01, ASC 3.7.3 and Beta 4 with deep scan along with deleting folders, and checked their uninstallers for Live components too, and none were there. wlmuninstaller.exe tool reports nothing, but after a failed install it finds something, but failes to clean it under all user admin privilege. The same errors still occur after all of that. Google searching I see people on forums suggesting reinstalling the OS cause MS doesn't even know how to fix this, but I'm hoping someone here can help. NOTE: I don't have System Restore or any other state freeze utilities going, and I don't have any real time AV going(I sometime scan with defender, anti rootkits, and online scanners). NOTE2:I posted this on windowslivehelp.com, before looking to see if the place was active or not, hoping I can get help here. Thanks

• Spots appear in a rectangle area on screen, ubuntu gnome 13.04, nvidia driver

  I am using Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 with nvidia-310 driver installed. My GPU is GeForce GTX650. Strange spots freqently appear on screen, with following traits: Spots are restricted in one or two rectangle areas at any instant. When typing, the pattern of spots change. Possibly increase, or all disappear when one key pressed. Mouse movement also influences. This problem last within one boot. The only way can I get rid of this problem is to reboot. It can be detected as soon as entering desktop if it appears. Simultaneously, the "power off" option is lost in the top-right menu of Gnome3. Never such problem when using windows 7 on the same computer, neither ubuntu with Nouveou driver. Seldomly, half of the screen become black. I googled a lot. Similar conditions are described, but no confirmed solution. Uninstall-r einstall strategy does not work. Any clue solving this will be appeciated.

• really weird DNS problem in Ubuntu {after one month, seems like ISP problem}

  Hello everyone. I been having this random dns problem, in Ubuntu 10.04 and in 10.10 it started about 2 weeks ago after (I believe) an update. Basically when I go to a website randomly I get that the website I'm visiting is not available ("Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to ..." & "This webpage is not available."). I tested with Chromium "7.0.515.0 (58587)" and Firefox minefield (4.0ish) and 3.6.9. I did these 4 things already: /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="ipv6.disable=1" and this: /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1 net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1 *disabling Chromium DNS pre-fetching *using Google and OpenDNS servers as well as ISP DNS servers. But didn't improve, also no other computers in my network have the same problem. All computer wired to the same router. I'm a software engineer that run out of ideas, please help me. Thanks in advance. UPDATE: some programs (synaptic / firefox update/ vuze(azureus)) say connection refused for the error. Most of the time a second try will fix the "refusal". UPDATE2: I found out with Wireshark, that everytime I have this problem i've got this 192.168.0.10 8.8.8.8 ICMP Destination unreachable (Port unreachable) Confirmed an ISP error. ISP;Speedy Location: Argentina, Buenos Aires (capital Federal) Area.

• Excel 2010 data validation warning (compatibility mode)

  We have some legacy worksheets that were created in Excel 2003, which are used by LabVIEW-based test automation software. The current LabVIEW software can only handle the legacy .xls format, so we're forced to keep these worksheets as-is for the time being. We've migrated to Office 2010 and when working with these worksheets, I see this warning: "The following features in this workbook are not supported by earlier versions of Excel. These features may be lost or degraded when you save this workbook in the currently selected file format. Click Continue to save the workbook anyway. To keep all of your features, click Cancel and then save the file in one of the new file formats." "Significant loss of functionality" "One or more cells in this workbook contain data validation rules which refer to values on other worksheets. These data validation rules will not be saved." When I click 'Find', some cells that do indeed have validation rules are highlighted, but those rules are all on the same worksheet! We're using simple list-based validation, with some cells off to the side containing the valid values (for example, cell B4 has a List with Source "=$D$4:$E$4") This makes no sense to me whatsoever. One, the workbook was created in Excel 2003, so obviously we couldn't implement a feature that doesn't exist. Secondly, the modifications we're making don't involve changing the validation rules at all. Thirdly, the complaint that Excel is making is incorrect! All of the rules are on the same worksheet as the target. As if the story wasn't bizarre enough: I went ahead and saved the worksheet with Excel 2010. I then went to an old computer back in the lab and opened the document with Excel 2003. Guess what - the validations were untouched! My questions are: is this a legitimate bug in Excel 2010, or is this some exotic error in the legacy .xls worksheet that is confusing the heck out of Excel 2010? Has anyone else observed this issue working in compatibility mode?

• VPN from Windows XP to OpenSwan: correct setup?

  Main question is what I am doing wrong in my OpenSwan or L2TP client setup? I am trying to create a Linux OpenSwan VPN connection from Windows XP machine, using preshared key and the builtin Windows XP L2TP IPsec option. I have followed the instructions in Linux Home networking Wiki for setting up OpenSwan and a guide to making it work with the Windows XP client, but am now stuck. The net setup is as follows: [my windows client, private IP A]<->[f/wall B]<-internet->[g/w X]<->[Linux OpenSwan server Y] A - private subnet /24 B - internet address X - internet address /24 Y - internet address on same subnet as X What I essentially want is for computer with A address to feel and work, as if it was in X subnet for purposes of outgoing and incoming TCP and UDP connections. • Abysmal transfer speeds on gigabit network

  I am having trouble getting my Gigabit network to work properly between my desktop computer and my Windows Home Server. When copying files to my server (connected through my switch), I am seeing file transfer speeds of below 10MB/s, sometimes even below 1MB/s. The machine configurations are: Desktop Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 2x WD Green 1TB drives in striped RAID 4GB RAM AB9 QuadGT motherboard Realtek RTL8810SC network adapter Windows Home Server AMD Athlon 64 X2 4GB RAM 6x WD Green 1,5TB drives in storage pool Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard Realtek 8111C network adapter Switch dLink Green DGS-1008D 8-port Both machines report being connected at 1Gbps. The switch lights up with green lights for those two ports, indicating 1Gbps. When connecting the machines through the switch, I am seeing insanely low speeds from WHS to the desktop measured with iperf: 10Kbits/sec (WHS is running iperf -c, desktop is iperf -s). Using iperf the other way (WHS is iperf -s, desktop iperf -c) speeds are also bad (~20Mbits/sec). Connecting the machines directly with a patch cable, I see much higher speeds when connecting from desktop to WHS (~300 Mbits/sec), but still around 10Kbits/sec when connecting from WHS to the desktop. File transfer speeds are also much quicker (both directions). • Home server hard drive: 186k start-stop cycles in 325 days?

  I set up a home server about a year ago, using Ubuntu server (10.04 LTS at the moment), four disks in RAID 5 for storage (WD Green 1.5 TB) and a laptop drive for the OS. Today the output of smartctl, a command line utility for checking the SMART attributes of a hard drive, tells me that the primary OS drive has had no less than 186,000 start-stop cycles in 325 days and may be nearing the end of its lifespan. The smartctl output is in "normalized values", in this case a number between 200 and 000, where 200 is "brand new" and 000 means "worn out". My disk gets 001. So I wonder what happened: 186k start/stop cycles in 7820 hours is about one start/stop per 2.5 minutes around the clock. This seems somewhat excessive for a computer that sees actual use once or twice per day. (The RAID disks are normal, averaging to one start/stop per day, as expected.) Does anyone have similar experiences, or pointers to what might be the issue here? Specifically I'd like to know Why the massive start/stop count? Do I have some sort of configuration issue? Could there be a background service that is causing trouble? Could having a laptop disk as the OS drive be part of the problem? Can anyone confirm or deny this?   I am working at an university as research assistant. Often I would like to connect from home to university resources over http or ssh, but they are blocked from outside access. Therefore, they have a front-end ssh server where we can ssh into and from there to other hosts. For http access they advise to set up an ssh tunnel like this ssh -L 1234:proxyserver.university.fi:8080 publicsshserver.university.fi and put the proxy settings of your browser to point to port 1234 All nice and working, but I would not like to let all my other internet traffic go over this proxy server, and everytime I want to connect to the university I have to do this steps again. What would I like: - Set up a ssh tunnel everytime I log in my computer. I have a certificate, so no passwords are needed - Have a way to redirect some wildcard-domains always through the ssh-server first. So that when I type intra.university.fi in my browser, transparently the request is going through the tunnel. Same when I want to ssh into another resource within the university Is this possible? For the http part I think I maybe should set up my own local transparent proxy to have this easily done. How about the ssh part?

• How do I make ESXi 5.0 to shutdown virtual machines when the physical power button is pushed?

  I have a home NAS/DLNA server built out of an HP Micro Server with the HP branded VMware ESXi 5.0.0 build-623860 (free license) installed. Being a home media center I'd like it to be "manageable" by all my household members. This requires that it needs to be powered on an off (including all the VMs inside) by anybody with the physical access to the server by simply pressing the power button on the chassis. The "startup" part is easy to obtain - all I had to do was to configure the startup/shutdown policy: Once the server powers up, all VMs start as well and that's exactly what I need. Well.. it did work up until 5.0.0U1, but that's a different story: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/03/free-esxi-hypervisor-auto-start-breaks-with-50-update-1.html Unfortunately, pressing the power button doesn't gracefully shutdown the guest machines - they are terminated instead. If I run the "shut down" command from the vSphere Client interface guests are powered off. I'd like to get the same end result when the physical power button is switched. I've poked around a bit on the ESXi server. There's a "/sbin/shutdown.sh" script that seemed to do exactly what I need... but after trying it does exactly what the power off button. The "/etc/inittab" contains an entry for the "shutdown" level but I suppose it's not hooked to the power button. I can't find any acpi related configuration, neither do I know what exactly is executed when the power button is pressed. Does anybody have a clue how can I make the VMs shutdown automatically when the physical power switch is pressed to turn of the computer?

• Win2k8R2 / IIS 7.5 - users getting 503 response, no 503 error reported in logs

  I've got 2 web servers with mirrored content. There's a load balancer sitting in front of them. Starting yesterday we've been getting people complaining about 503 errors. i can't find any 503 errors in the IIS log file. However the server host is saying these errors are due to .Net errors in our website which are causing the app pool to recycle. They said if the app pool were not recycle, the accountname would instead be the folder where the website files are located. I checked the app pool settings - it's set to recycle every 29 hours. And the rapid fail protection is set to the default of 5 failures in 5 minutes. But i have not seen 5 failures in the event log in that short of a time span. Can anyone help me confirm if the 503 responses are indeed being generated by the app pools recycling? Or are these errors coming from somewhere else? My guess at the time was their load balancer was the one actually returning the 503 error. But that was just a guess.

• Error in Apache: /var/run/apache2 not found

  This is more self-answered question but since it drove me crazy I would like to share with the community and maybe someone can tell me why it happened or what it caused. The thing is I wanted to install in my Ubuntu 10.4 machine a CGI app, one built in the samples that come with the gSOAP toolkit. My intention was to access those from ASP .NET machine. Regular Ubuntu does not come with Apache so I install it from Sypnatic. Pretty easy. I followed this How to Install Apache2 webserver with PHP,CGI and Perl Support in Ubuntu Server. Instead of apache.conf I tweaked httpd.conf since a college here used that file instead of the first to put his Apache running. Besides I was able to access his CGI from my ASP .NET but mysteriously I could not from mine, I was getting always "The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Temporarily Unavailable". Checking Apache error.log I found these messages: No such file or directory: unable to connect to cgi daemon after multiple tries: /home/julen/htdocs/cgi-bin/calcserver And looking more carefully whenever I restarted Apache I got this other message No such file or directory: Couldn't bind unix domain socket /var/run/apache2/cgisock. cgid daemon failed to initialize I am pretty new with Ubuntu and I could not think that Apache and Synaptic made a mistake in the installation process of the server, but it is true that the /var/run/apache2 was missing whereas in my college's computer was not. I tried to find and "elegant" solution but I found a post from 2006 that had an slight reference to it. Finally I decided to create the folder myself (as root) and then everything worked fine. • VNC authentication failure

  I try to connect to my vncserver running on CentOs from home computer, behind firewall. I have installed Win7 and Ubuntu both on this machine. I have an error: VNC conenction failed: vncserver too many security failures even when loging with right credentials (I reset passwd on CentOs) I get: authentication failure. I observe that I have to wait a whole day to be able to relogin at all. Is it something regarding that I try as root? I think important is also that I have to login to remote Centos through port 6050 - none else port works for me. Do I have to do something with other ports? I see that vncserver is listening on 5901, 5902 if another added - and I consider connection is established because from time to time (long time) the passwd prompt appears,... right? I have created additional user1, password for him to CentOS and to VNC, also user2. I do: service vncserver start and two servers starts, one :1, and second on :2. When I try to connect to vncserverIP:1 I get what described above, but when I try connect to vncserverIP:2 it says that the trial was unsuccessful. please help, what to do? additionally: how to disable this lockout for a testing purposes?

• Windows errors, how do I find root cause and fix it? Getting several errors

  My server is having issues and not responding to customer's https requests. I checked the event viewer and found several errors. These two are listed a couple of times: WINS encountered a database error. This may or may not be a serious error. WINS will try to recover from it. You can check the database error events under 'Application Log' category of the Event Viewer for the Exchange Component, ESENT, source to find out more details about database errors. If you continue to see a large number of these errors consistently over time (a span of few hours), you may want to restore the WINS database from a backup. The error number is in the second DWORD of the data section. And this one: An error occured while using SSL configuration for socket address 0.0.0.0:444. The error status code is contained within the returned data. SQL Server is not ready to accept new client connections. Wait a few minutes before trying again. If you have access to the error log, look for the informational message that indicates that SQL Server is ready before trying to connect again. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxxx.xxx] I also found this in the event viewer but the computer has been restarted since this message and I have not seen it again. Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory. This is my virtual memory settings: I'm not familiar with WINS so I wasn't sure if that is where I start or how to resolve it. Is the WINS error causing the other problems or should I be looking somewhere else?

• Using UDF on a USB flash drive

  After failing to copy a file bigger than 4G to my 8G USB flash drive, I formatted it as ext3. While this is working fine for me so far, it will cause problems if I want to use it to copy files to someone which does not use Linux. I am thinking of formatting it as UDF instead, which I hope would allow it to be read (and possibly even written) on the three most popular operating systems (Windows, MacOS, and Linux), without having to install any extra drivers. However, from what I found on the web already, there seem to be several small gotchas related to which parameters are used to create the filesystem, which can reduce the compability (but most of the pages I found are about optical media, not USB flash drives). I would like to know: Which utility should I use to create the filesystem? (So far I have found mkudffs and genisoimage, and mkudffs seems the best option.) Which parameters should I use with the chosen utility for maximum compability? How compatible with the most common versions of these three operating systems UDF actually is? Is using UDF actually the best idea? Is there another filesystem which would have better compatibility, with no problematic restrictions like the FAT32 4G file size limit, and without having to install special drivers in every single computer which touches it?

• Cannot access domain from windows 2003 client

  Hey all, First off I am a novice at AD and DNS so please bear with me. This is my current situation: I have one server which is a DC and DNS server (win2k3) - Machine 1. I have another machine which is trying to join this domain - Machine2. This machine is also a win2k3 server. This is what I have done so far: I have setup DNS on the DC and its tcp/ip dns is pointing to itself. On machine2 I have set its dns to point to the dc. The DNS has been setup with a forward lookup zone with the same name as the domain (accdirect.com). I can ping machine1 from the machine2 by its FQDN and ip. I have set up forwarders on the DC for our ISP dns and can browse the internet on both machines. In the DNS mmc on the DC I can see a host (A) has been created for machine2. The problem is I still cannot join the domain. When I try join the domain via my computer - properties then it brings up the username/password box and after I go "ok" it says cannot find domain accdirect.com If I run this from machine2 dcdiag /s:accdirect.com /u:accdirect.com\admin /p: then I get the following: Performing initial setup: ** Warning: could not confirm the identity of this server in the directory versus the names returned by DNS servers. If there are problems accessing this directory server then you may need to check that this server is correctly registered with DNS [accdirect.com] Directory Binding Error 1722: Win32 Error 1722 This may limit some of the tests that can be performed. Done gathering initial info. On the dc all dcdiag and netdiag results pass. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate this! • Homegroup should be working, but doesn't

  I have Win7 installed on both my PC and laptop. When I choose to make a homegroup I can go through the steps of creating, getting password, then joining it from the other computer and it says that it all connects properly. But when I go to the homegroup tab it always says no other computers connected. If I look in the settings it will say "connected to suchandsuch homegroup" but the comps won't show. Also, on my PC, when I tick the boxes in the homegroup settings on what libraries I want to share, then click on save settings, it shuts down the settings window and when I re-open it the library tick boxes are all unticked again. Yet, I have had no problems with the tick boxes stayin ticked on the laptop. I have tried cancelling and remaking the homegroup, have tried making it on both computers, and have tried disabling and re-enabling the network connectors but it still won't work. At my old house we had 3 PCs running win 7 and 2 of them could homegroup together fine but mine never could as it was getting the same problem I am getting now. I feel like I am the only one on the planet with this problem. Can anybody help?

• Why do I often have to refresh pages I navigate to once for them (or content in them) to load?

  I have noticed a bizarre pattern when using my PC, that when I open a link to a website, it often will often take a very long time to load, or time out. Sometimes content on the website will be drawn, but again, it seems to get "stuck" for an unusual amount of time before finishing. Most affected is Youtube; almost every time I navigate to a youtube video from another website such as Google, the video will not begin playing, but will instead just display the player controls with a black screen where the video should be and the buffering symbol, usually before displaying an error such as "The video failed to load". The unusual part of this problem is that whenever this happens, refreshing the page always causes it to load almost immediately the second time around, without any problems. Note that I'm not talking about how some browsers will dump whatever has been cached to the "pallet" briefly when the page is refreshed or loading stopped; but that the second time loading the website being faster. I have done my best to rule out some of the obvious causes: My Windows 7 desktop computer is the only device that seems to be affected. I use Firefox on it (latest version, flash updated, etc). My connection has more than enough bandwidth (30 megabits down, 4 up), and I've even tried QoSing all other devices to make sure this isn't happening due to usage spikes. Wireshark is not showing any clearly unusual network activity (i.e frequently dropped packets).

• Recovering a damaged microSDHC

  I just bought from eBay a Kingston 32GB microSDHC that was advertised as defective. The seller said that there could be formatting problems or with transfer of large files. Unfortunately, when I got it, it was a total mess. My Nikon camera doesn't read it at all (OK, maybe it doesn't support 32GB) My Linux laptop doesn't mount it: can't read superblock The same laptop refuses to mkfs.msdos because it failed whilst writing reserved sector The same laptop, under Windows, doesn't read nor format the card HTC HD2 mounts the MMC, allows me to write via USB, but is unable to open the just written files OK, folks, now you would say I would have to go through Paypal complaint... that's not that easy. I consciously bought a half-price card that was known to show some defects, and Paypal complaints take time. Obviously, I can't accept somebody sold me a completely use-less computer decoration. So I'll keep it as last option. My question is Do you know a way, under either Linux or Windows, to thoroughly scan, test and possibly repair memory cards, even if I have to lose some percentage of space because of bad sectors? If I can keep at least half of the card intact it would certainly be fine. I used to do broken sector marking with hard disks in the past. • How to Keep Video and Audio in Sync When Ripping a DVD?

  I have been using the freeware version of the WinX DVD Ripper (http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/) to rip some DVDs. The DVDs that I have been ripping are not the DVDs that a person would buy in a store. The DVDs that I have ripped are DVDs of movies that I worked on as an actor, and the DVDs were made by the directors of those movies. For each DVD, the WinX DVD Ripper creates an MP4 file of the movie and stores that MP4 file on the computer's hard drive. Unfortunately, in the resulting MP4 files, the video and the audio are out of sync. The video is ahead of the audio. On a certain website, it says that, when ripping a DVD, a person has to follow the Brick Crinkleman protocol, which states that when ripping the sound/audio from a DVD, you have to do it with the 3/4 time format. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091123071551AAZ3S7G) So, who is Brick Crinkleman, and what is the 3/4 time format? And how do I implement this 3/4 time format on the WinX DVD Ripper? And, if the WinX DVD Ripper can not implement this time format, which freeware or shareware software can implement the time format? By the way, I am running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-250f desktop PC. Thank you very much for any information and help.
