• What technology for a rich UI desktop application ?

  For an internship, I'm gonna have to develop a desktop application. The focus is creating a rich UI ( cool effects, sound etc ). Which tech should I go with ? - Flash ? ( in this case, shoud I go with a flex project ? AIR ? what is the gain between this and a simple raw flash project ) - C#/Silverlight ? Any other possibility ? If experienced developers could give their advice, that would be great thanks.

• Unsafe, super-fast cross-process memory buffer?

  Cross-process memory buffers always have some overhead, and my understanding is this is quite high. But what if you're implementing a cross-process render-buffer, this isn't critically important in the same way as other data so are there techniques we can use to get 'raw' access to a chunk of memory from multiple processes, with no safety nets apart from it not crashing? Or do modern operating systems simply not work with unabstracted memory in a way to make this possible? I'm working in C++ but the question applies to Win XP/Vista/7, MacOSX 10.5+ (& Linux less importantly).

• MySQL Datefields: duplicate or calculate?

  We are using a table with a structure imposed upon us more than 10 years ago. We are allowed to add columns, but urged not to change existing columns. Certain columns are meant to represent dates, but are put in different format. Amongst others: * CHAR(6): YYMMDD * CHAR(6): DDMMYY * CHAR(8): YYYYMMDD * CHAR(8): DDMMYYYY * DATE * DATETIME Since we now would like to do some more complex queries, using advanced date functions, my manager proposed to d*uplicate those problem columns* to a proper FORMATTED_OLDCOLUMNNAME column using a DATE or DATETIME format. Is this the way to go? Couldn't we just use the STR_TO_DATE function each time we accessed the columns? To avoid every query having to copy-paste the function, I could still work with a view or a stored procedure, but duplicating data to avoid recalculation sounds wrong. Solutions I see (I guess I prefer 2.2.1) 1. Physically duplicate columns 1.1 In the same table 1.1.1 Added by each script that does a modification (INSERT/UPDATE/REPLACE/...) 1.1.2 Maintained by a trigger on each modification 1.2 In a separate table 1.2.1 Added by each script that does a modification (INSERT/UPDATE/REPLACE/...) 1.2.2 Maintained by a trigger on each modification 2.   Hey, I'm just looking for some rough guidance here on the feasibility of a project. I have say a few thousand text documents and I want to create a web based system to serve them up to users in a OS X application. It's just a tiny aside for my family's small business, so it doesn't need to be amazing at the moment, we just want to see if we can can anyone to use it. I can't believe it can be that hard to do this? -Some sort of SQL backend database to manage permissions for users? -Download through the application? -For the moment just want to view the raw text files. -If we want people to pay, how would we go about incorporating that? Sorry for the vague outline. I'm still not 100% sure on what we want. Thanks for any help.

  Hello, The question Is it possible to ask SSIS to cast a value and return NULL in case the cast is not allowed instead of throwing an error ? My environment I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. The general context Just in case you're curious, here is my use case. I have to store data coming from somewhere in a generic table (key/value structure with history) witch contains some sort of value that can be strings, numbers or dates. The structure is something like this : table Values { Id int, Date datetime, -- for history Key nvarchar(50) not null, Value nvarchar(50), DateValue datetime, NumberValue numeric(19,9) } I want to put the raw value in the Value column and try to put the same value in the DateValue column when i'm able to cast it to Datetime in the NumberValue column when i'm able to cast it to a number Those two typed columns would make all sort of aggregation and manipulation much easier and faster later.   Hi, A module level dictionary 'd' and is accessed by different threads/requests in a django web application. I need to update 'd' every minute with a new data and the process takes about 5 seconds. What could be best solution where I want the users to get either the old value or the new value of d and nothing in between. I can think of a solution where a temp dictionary is constructed with a new data and assigned to 'd' but not sure how this works! Appreciate your ideas. Thanks

  Is there a framework which can be used in your application, to make it expose internal objects on some port for inspection. for.e.g. after i start my application in this case a GUI Application, and then say launch http://localhost:9100 then it should show me the statistics of the app. I played a bit with HttpListener accepting connections and then outputting raw HTML, it works fine for simple tasks, but there is too much worked involved if i have make a proper object browser. • Having trouble with php and ajax search function

  I am still quite new to php/ajax/mysql. In anycase, I'm creating a search function which is returning properly the data I'm looking for. In brief, I have a mysql database set up. A php website that has a search function. I'm now trying to add a link to a mysql database search rather than just showing the results. In my search.php, the echo line is working fine but the $string .= is not returning anything. I'm just trying to get the same as the echo but with the link to the mysql php record. The 'work' table has a 'draft' column with values of either 1 or 0. I want the COUNT(tags.id) to take into account whether the work with the specific tag is in draft mode (1) or not. Say there are 10 pieces of work tagged with, for example, 'design'. The COUNT will be 10. But 2 of these pieces of work are in draft mode, so the COUNT should really be 8. How do I manage this?

• How can I exclude LEFT JOINed tables from TOP in SQL Server?

  Let's say I have two tables of books and two tables of their corresponding editions. I have a query as follows: SELECT TOP 10 * FROM (SELECT hbID, hbTitle, hbPublisherID, hbPublishDate, hbedID, hbedDate FROM hardback LEFT JOIN hardbackEdition on hbID = hbedID UNION SELECT pbID, pbTitle, pbPublisher, pbPublishDate, pbedID, pbedDate FROM paperback Left JOIN paperbackEdition on pbID = pbedID ) books WHERE hbPublisherID = 7 ORDER BY hbPublishDate DESC If there are 5 editions of the first two hardback and/or paperback books, this query only returns two books. However, I want the TOP 10 to apply only to the number of actual book records returned. Is there a way I can select 10 actual books, and still get all of their associated edition records? In case it's relevant, I do not have database permissions to CREATE and DROP temporary tables. Thanks for reading! Update To clarify: The paperback table has an associated table of paperback editions. The hardback table has an associated table of hardback editions. The hardback and paperback tables are not related to each other except to the user who will (hopefully!) see them displayed together.

  Hi, I am getting a some unusual problem with JQuery ajax. I am using IIS to host my web application and I have http handler for which I have enabled only POST verb on it. Using JQuery ajax, I am posting data to this http handler, this is working fine in our development and testing environment and also most of the time on production environment as well. But sometimes we are getting empty post data on to the server. When we look into the csBytes on IISLog we found that it was very less compare to other success post requests. We are using JSON.js to convert the javascript object back to raw json string and latest jquery.1-3.js for posting to server. Anbody know why this is happening?

  I have been writing in java for a few months now and have just started using netbeans. I have spent all day today trying to work out how to connect to an SQL database and display data from 2 tables (ie display the data from from a select statement with an inner join) in a JTable. I have tried using JPQL with the following statment SELECT j, cust.name FROM Job j JOIN j.jobnumber cust where the job table has a field called customer that references id in the customer table.   I have and entity lets call it Entity, and a Child collection Children. I have a screen where the user has the Entity information, and a list with the Children collection, but that collection can be get very big, so i was thinking about using paging: get the first 20 elements, and lazy load the next only if the user explicitly presses the next button. So i created in the Entity Repository a function with this signature: IEnumerable<Child> GetChildren(Entity entity, int actualPage, int numberOfRecordsPerPage) I need to use the setfirstresult and setmaxresult, not in the Agregate root Entity, but in the child collection. But when i use those two configurations, they allways refer to the entity type of the HQL/Criteria query. Other alternative would be to create a HQL/Criteria query for the Child type, set the max and first result, then filter the ones who are in the Entity Children collection (by using subquery). But i wasn't able to do this filter. If it was a bidirectional association (Child refering the parent Entity) it would be easier. Any suggestions? Any

If you have: Large number of consumers Large profiles with a huge set of variables (as profiles describing human behaviour are likely to be..) ...you are in trouble. If you really have a physical relational database to which you target a query and then a physical disk starts to rotate someplace to give you an individual profile or a set of profiles, the profile user (a web site customizing a page, a recommendation engine making a recommendation..) has died of boredom before getting any observable results. There is the possibility of having the profiles in memory, which would of course increase the performance hugely. What are the most proven solutions for a fast-response, scalable consumer profile storage? Is there a shootout of these someplace?

• How can I take zooming into account when a user touches a UIScrollView?

  I have a UIImageView inside of a UIScrollView. The parent scroll view allows zooming and panning. When the user taps a point in the scroll view, I want to find the location in the raw image inside the UIImageView - i.e. I want the point after including any zooming and panning the user has done in the scroll view. Right now, I have a UIScrollView subclass called ForwardingScrollView that handles touch events and attempts to convert them into locations in the coordinate system of the child image view. I tried adding contentOffset to these points, tried multiplying them by zoomScale, and even tried doing both. I also tried calling [touch locationInView: self] and [touch locationInView: parent], but none of these methods correctly return the point that I clicked in the underlying image. What's the best way to do this? Thanks in advance.

• Tracking down origin of I/O in multi-process server

  I'm currently trying to track down some phantom I/O in a PostgreSQL build I'm testing. It's a multi-process server and it isn't simple to associate disk I/O back to a particular back-end and query. I thought Linux's perf tool would be ideal for this, but I'm struggling to capture block I/O performance counter metrics and associate them with user-space activity. It's easy to record block I/O requests and completions with, eg: sudo perf record -g -T -u postgres -e 'block:block_rq_*' and the user-space pid is recorded, but there's no kernel or user-space stack captured, or ability to snapshot bits of the user-space process's heap (say, query text) etc. So while you have the pid, you don't know what the process was doing at that point. Just perf script output like: postgres 7462 [002] 301125.113632: block:block_rq_issue: 8,0 W 0 () 208078848 + 1024 [postgres] If I add the -g flag to perf record it'll take snapshots of the kernel stack, but doesn't capture user-space state for perf events captured in the kernel. The user-space stack only goes up to the entry-point from userspace, like LWLockRelease, LWLockAcquire, memcpy (mmap'd IO), __GI___libc_write, etc. So. Any tips? Being able to capture a snapshot of the user-space stack in response to kernel events would be ideal.

• Double join with habtm in ActiveRecord

  I have a weird situation involving the need of a double inner join. I have tried the query I need, I just don't know how to make rails do it. The Data Account (has_many :sites) Site (habtm :users, belongs_to :account) User (habtm :sites) Ignore that they are habtm or whatever, I can make them habtm or has_many :through. I want to be able to do @user.accounts or @account.users Then of course I should be able to do @user.accounts < @some_other_account And then have @user.sites include all the sites from @some_other_account. I've fiddled with habtm and has_many :through but can't get it to do what I want. Basically I need to end up with a query like this (copied from phpmyadmin. Tested and works): SELECT accounts.* FROM accounts INNER JOIN sites ON sites.account_id = accounts.id INNER JOIN user_sites ON sites.id = user_sites.site_id WHERE user_sites.user_id = 2 Can I do this? Is it even a good idea to have this double join? I am assuming it would work better if users had the association with accounts to begin with, and then worry about getting @user.sites instead, but it works better for many other things if it is kept the way it is (users <- sites).

  since PHP can't be used in Spotify apps directly I am using it on my server only, but I am having problems getting the sessions to work, is it possible to use sessions even?
