• How to store and compare time-zone sensitive times

  I have a data structure where an entity has times stored as an int (minutes into the day) for fast comparison. The entity also has a Foreign Key reference back to a TimeZone table which contains the .NET CLR ID Name and it's Standard Time/Daylight Time acronyms. Since this information is stored as time-zone insensitive - I was wondering how in LINQ to SQL I could convert this into a UTC DateTime for comparison against other times that will be in UTC. Just to be clear this conversion has to be done server-side so that I can execute filtering on the SQL Server and not the client. I am using .NET 3.5 SP1 and SQL Server 2008.

• Is there a version of postActionEvent for KeyEvent (specifically for a JTextArea)?

  I'm writing a program that contains multiple JTextFields and 2 JTextAreas within an input panel. I have a submit button on the bottom. I have it set up so when a user types something into each field (including the JTextAreas) and hits the Enter key, it updates a text file, and when they press the submit button it updates the file then outputs a new version of it in the local directory. If the user presses Enter in any of the fields, it validates their input, however, I want to re-validate all fields when they press the submit button. Each field (again, JTextAreas included) has it's own validation check within its ActionListener or KeyListener (for the JTextAreas). It's easy enough to use postActionEvent() for the JTextFields, but is there a similar method for the JTextAreas to force fire a KeyEvent? I don't want to duplicate code and consume memory by re-writing the validation for those 2 Components inside the ActionEvent for the JButton. Unfortunately, I can't provide a sample because I'm writing the program on a classified machine (PC).

• How can you tell if an activity is starting or resuming?

  I have an activity which pulls some JSON from my server, and then uses it to draw a list. That list launches further activities. My problem is that I can't figure out a way to tell if the activity is still alive when you go back to it, so I end up re-querying my JSON from the server and redrawing the list every time the user goes back to the activity. How can I tell if my activity is still alive so I can skip the redraw? Using onRestart works for hitting the home key then going back, but onCreate not onRestart is called if I selected a list item then hit back.

  I'm working to create a simple Python script that will ultimately tell you how many blog entries were posted in a given month, and the pyblog app is proving very helpful. However, when I create the blog object, I don't know how to access it's various attributes. • Quick way to do data lookup in PHP

  I have a data table with 600,000 records that is around 25 megabytes large. It is indexed by a 4 byte key. Is there a way to find a row in such dataset quickly with PHP without resorting to MySQL? The website in question is mostly static with minor PHP code and no database dependencies and therefore fast. I would like to add this data without having to use MySQL if possible. In C++ I would memory map the file and do a binary search in it. Is there a way to do something similar in PHP?

• Space requirements of a merge-sort

  I'm trying to understand the space requirements for a Mergesort, O(n). I see that time requirements are basically, amount of levels(logn) * merge(n) so that makes (n log n). Now, we are still allocating n per level, in 2 different arrays, left and right. I do understand that the key here is that when the recursive functions return the space gets deallocated, but I'm not seeing it too obvious. Besides, all the info I find, just states space required is O(n) but don't explain it. • How do you encrypt data between client and server running in Flash and Java?

  We have a multiclient system where the client is written in Flash and the server is written in Java. Currently, communication is done in Flash by usage of flash.net.Socket and the protocol is written in JSON. The server uses a custom port to receive connections and then proceed to talk with each client. As expected, data is sent and received on both fronts as raw bytes, which are then decoded as needed. We would like to encrypt the communication between clients and server. I have some basic understanding about public/private key encryption, but I do not know what is the best way to exchange keys or what libraries are available (on both languages) to do this. What would be the best strategy to attack this problem and where should I start looking for libraries/methods to implement this encryption?

  hi everyone, i have a parent class called Course, and two child class PostgradCourse and UndergradCourse. i have a hashmap HashMap courses; i store all the postgradCourse and undergradCourse objects in the hashmap. i want to retrieve an undergradCourse object from the hashmap using the key. Course course = courses.get(courseCode); then i want to call a method in the UndergradCourse class, setUnits() method course.setUnits(); but the compiler say cannot find symbol- method setUnit() im pretty sure the problem is the compiler is looking for a method setUnit() in the Course class instead of UndergradCourse class i did this but its not working UndergradCourse course = courses.get(courseCode); results in incompatible type so how can i retrieve undergradCourse object from the hashmap as an undergradCourse object instead of course object? so then i can call a method inside the child class thanks in advance

  We use the ASP.NET profile subsystem to associate key-value pairs of information with users. I am implementing functionality for the deletion of users. I have been using the ProfileManager.DeleteProfile(string userName) method, but I have noticed that this leaves a row in the aspnet_Users table in the aspnetdb database we use to store the profile information. Clearly, I could manipulate the database directly, but I am reluctant to do so. What is the best way to ensure all information assocaited with a user is deleted from the aspnetdb? PS: there is a tantalising Membership.DeleteUser(string userName, bool deleteEverything) method, but this returns a database connection error. A web.config issue?

• What Can A 'TreeDict' (Or Treemap) Be Used For In Practice?

  I'm developing a 'TreeDict' class in Python. This is a basically a dict that allows you to retrieve its key-value pairs in sorted order, just like the Treemap collection class in Java. I've implemented some functionality based on the way unique indexes in relational databases can be used, e.g. functions to let you retrieve values corresponding to a range of keys, keys greater than, less than or equal to a particular value in sorted order, strings or tuples that have a specific prefix in sorted order, etc. Unfortunately, I can't think of any real life problem that will require a class like this. I suspect that the reason we don't have sorted dicts in Python is that in practice they aren't required often enough to be worth it, but I want to be proved wrong. Can you think of any specific applications of a 'TreeDict'? Any real life problem that would be best solved by this data structure? I just want to know for sure whether this is worth it.

• MapReduce results seem limited to 100?

  I'm playing around with Map Reduce in MongoDB and python and I've run into a strange limitation. I'm just trying to count the number of "book" records. It works when there are less than 100 records but when it goes over 100 records the count resets for some reason.   I currently have my web.xml configured to catch 404s and send them to my spring controller which will perform a search given the original URL request. Using a logger in my JBoss setup, I can see that when I test this search controller by going to a non-existent page, the following occurs: Server can't find the request Request is sent to 404 error page (in this case my search controller) Search controller performs search Search controller returns view name (for this illustration, we'll assume test.jsp is returned) Based off of server logger, I can see that org.springframework.web.servlet.view.JstlView is initialized once my search controller returns the view name (so I can assume it is being picked up correctly by the InternalResourceViewResolver) Server attempts to return content to browser resulting in a 404! A couple things confuse me about this: I'm not 100% sure why this isn't resolving when test.jsp clearly exists under the /WEB-INF/jsp/ directory. Even if there was some other problem, why would this result in a 404? Shouldn't a 404 error page that results in another 404 theoretically create an infinite loop? Thanks for any help or pointers! • Access parent class from custom attribute

  Hi, Is it possible to access a parent class from within an attribute. For example I would like to create a DropDownListAttribute which can be applied to a property of a viewmodel class in MVC and then create a drop down list from an editor template. I am following a similar line as Kazi Manzur Rashid here. He adds the collection of categories into viewdata and retrieves them using the key supplied to the attribute. I would like to do something like the below, public ExampleDropDownViewModel { public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Categories {get;set;} [DropDownList("Categories")] public int CategoryID { get;set; } } The attribute takes the name of the property containing the collection to bind to.   I'm looking in to Magento's filtering options (Ecommerce System and PHP Framekwork with an expansive ORM system). Specifically the addFieldToFilter method. In this method, you specify a SQLish filter by passing in a single element array, with the key indicating the type of filter. For example, array('eq'=>'bar') //eq means equal array('neq'=>'bar') //neq means not equal would each give you a where clause that looks like where field = 'bar'; where field != 'bar'; So, deep in the bowels of the source, I found a comparison type named 'moreq' that maps to a = comparison operator array('moreq'=>'27') where field >= 27 The weird thing is, there's already a 'gteq' comparision type array('gteq'=>'27') where field >= 27 So, my question is, what does moreq stand for? Is is some special SQL concept that's supported in other databases that the Magento guys wants to map to MySQL, or is it just "more required" and an example what happens when you're doing rapid agile and trying to maintain backwards compatibility.

  Hello Although I have no problem using SecureCRT (5.1.2 build 274) to work from Windows and connect to PC's running Linux, I have a problem when connecting to an embedded Asterisk appliance that provides"vi" through BusyBox 1.4.1 (2008-03-10). I have a property called EntryType which is an int. There are 2 available numbers 1 or 2 Lets say I had 3 items that my query is working with 2 of them had the EntryType = 1 and the 3rd had EntryType2. The first records had a ItemAmount of 55.00 and the 3rd had a ItemAmount of 50.00 How can I group using something simlar to above but minus the ItemAmount of 50.00 from the grouped amount to return 60.00? Any help would be great!!

Which method is faster: Store the datetime as a double (via unix timestamp) Store the datetime as a datetime The application generating the timestamp data can output either format. Unfortunately, datetime will be a key for this particular data structure so speed will matter. Also, is it possible to make an index on an expression? For example, index on UNIX_TIMESTAMP(mydate) where mydate is a field in a table and UNIX_TIMESTAMP is a mysql function. I know that Postgres can do it. I'm thinking there must be a way in mysql as well.

  I'm making an application in PHP and there is a requirement that it must be possible to decrypt the passwords in order to avoid problems in the future with switching user database to different system. What encryption/decryption algorithm would you suggest? Is it good idea to just store the encrypted value and then compare the future authentication attempts to that value? Are the passwords still as safe as MD5/SHA1 when the private key is not available to the attacker (Hidden in USB drive for example)? I should still use salting, right? What encryption libraries should I use for PHP?
