• Data indexing frameworks fit for large E-Commerce applications

  we wrote and still maintain a large E-Commerce application. Our feature list resembles what you would expect from most shops. We'd like to improve some of our features, and now the search/suggestion list functionality (enter some letters, a JScripted suggestion list appears) has caught our eye. Currently, we use http://xapian.org/. It has some drawbacks. Firstly, it's not actually the right solution. It has been created to index documents, not ever-changing data in a granularity that an E-Commerce application would need. Secondly, the load on the database is significant when we reindex all data every night. We'd like a framework that has been designed for indexing database data, which can add to the index easily and without much load, which can supply data changes in the backoffice quickly to the frontend without much load and delay. I'm aware of the fact that Xapian is Open Source and even Free Software, so we could adapt it to our needs if we decided to invest the time and manpower. But taking a quick look around for a solution more suited seems fair, right? Oh, and commercial applications are fine, too. FOSS is not required. Thanks a bunch.

• Data that has been deleted in P6, how is it updated in Analytics

  In P6 Reporting Database 2.0 the ETL process looked to the refrdel table in the P6 PMDB to determine which projects were deleted. The refrdel table could not be cleared out between ETL runs or those deletes would be lost. After the ETL process is run the refrdel can be cleared out. It is important to keep any purging of the refrdel in a consistent cycle so the ETL process can pick up these deletes and process them accordingly.  In P6 Reporting Database 2.2 and higher the Extended Schema is used as the data source. In the Extended Schema, deleted data is filtered out by the views. The Extended Schema services will handle any interaction with the refrdel table, this concern with timing refrdel cleanup and ETL runs is not applicable as of this release. In the Extended Schema tables (ex. TaskX) there can still be deleted data present. The Extended Schema views join on the primary PMDB tables (ex. Task) and filter out any deleted data.  Any data that was deleted that remains in the Extended Schema tables can be cleaned out at a designated time by running the clean up procedure as documented in the P6 Extended Schema white paper. This can be run occasionally but is not necessary to run often unless large amounts of data has been deleted.

• Tools for managing eCommerce backend

  I am working with an eCommerce company that has outgrown their hacked together backend for managing inventory, pricing and feeds to various shopping engines (Yahoo, 3d cart, Amazon, etc.). They currently manage about 12,000 skus and are doing $40M in revenue. Their internal people are working on a new Magento solution, but that is six months away and they need to replace/improve their current solution in order to hold them over. Their current solution was developed by two people who have left the company. What tools/architecture do other eCommerce sites use to manage their inventory, pricing, product descriptions and feed generation for the shopping engines? The current solution looks like this: 1) Inventory, pricing and product descriptions are maintained in a database and in NetSuite by employees 2) New products are added to the database via import 3) Twice a week data is extracted into a giant Excel spreadsheet 4) The Excel file adjusts pricing based on some simple algorithms 5) The Excel file exports about six different csv feeds which are manually uploaded to Amazon, 3d cart, Yahoo, Google and Merchant Advantage a. Each feed is a variant of the product which different field names and formatting b. Pricing levels differ between feeds c. Some products are not sent to all feeds 6) Orders are manually parsed and the inventory is adjusted as needed once product is sold The new solution should: 1) Import data from ODBC, CSV and NetSuite (CSV via ftp) 2) Apply pricing changes via simple algorithms (< $80 add $10, $200 add $25) 3) Ensure margins are being met 4) Format and generate a bunch of CSV and XML feeds 5) Perhaps upload feeds to shopping engines automatically What I need to do is replace the Excel file with something that is maintainable and automated. Something in the .Net stack is preferable but not mandatory. I’ve been looking at BizTalk but it may take too long to develop and deploy. Any suggestions?

  In one of the virtual environment while I was trying to add SQL Server Database (.mdf) file to asp.net project I encountered following error: Connections to SQL Server files (.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL:  For a long time I am using SQL Server 2012 but this error was a bit interesting to me. I realize that there should not be any need of the SQL Server 2005 installation. I quickly figured out that I can remove this error if I do as mentioned below: Open Microsoft Visual Studio Select Tools >> Options >> Database Tools >> Data Connections Enter the name of an installed instance in “SQL Server Instance Name” field. Click OK If you do not know the instance name, you can follow either of the options. 1) Use the command line sqlcmd utility 2) Using SQL Server Management Studio Is there any other way to resolve this error? • How to show or direct a business analyst to do data modelling?

  Our business analysts pushed hard to collect data through a spreadsheet. I am the programmer responsible for importing that data. Usually when they push hard for something like this, I never know how well it will work out until a few weeks later when I have time assigned to work on the task of programming the import of the data. I have tried to do as much as possible along the way, named ranges, data validations, etc. But I usually don't have time to take a detailed look at all the data and compare to the destination in the database to determine how well it matches up. A lot of times there will be maybe a little table of items that somehow I have to relate to something else in the database, but there are not natural or business keys present that would allow me to do so. Make the best of this, trying to write something that can compare strings and make a best guess at it and then go through the effort of creating interfaces for a user to match the imported data to the destination. I feel like if the business analyst was actually creating a data model, they would be forced to think about these relationships, and have an appreciation for the need of natural or business keys to be part of the spreadsheet for the purposes of smoothly importing the data. The closest they come to business analysis is a big flat list of fields, and that would be fine if it were like any other data dictionary and include data types+relationships, but it isn't. They are just a bunch of names. No indication of what type of data they might hold, and it is up to me to guess. When I have pushed for more detail, they say that it is just busy work. How can I explain the importance of data modelling? How can I tell them what it is and how to do it? It feels impossible, because they don't have an appreciation for its importance. They do however, usually have an interest in helping out in whatever way they can, it's just this in particular has never gotten a motivated response.

• Middle tier language for interfacing C/C++ with db and web app

  I have a web application requiring a middle-tier language to communicate between an oracle database and math routines on a Linux server and a flex-based application on a client. I'm not a software expert, and need recommendations for which language to use for the middle-tier. The math routines are currently in Matlab but will be ported to C (or C++) as shared libraries. Thus, by default there's some C or C++ communication necessary. These routines rely on FFTW (www.fftw.org), which is called directly from C or C++ (thus, I don't see re-writing these routines in another language). The middle tier must manage traffic between the client, the math routines, and the Oracle database. The client will trigger the math routines aynchronously, and the results saved in the db and transferred back to the client, etc. The middle-tier will also need to authenticate user accounts/passwords, and send out various administrative emails. Originally I thought PhP the obvious choice, but interfacing asychronously multiple clients with the C or C++ routines doesn't seem straightforward. Then I thought, why not just keep the whole middle tier in C or C++, but I'm not sure if this is done in the industry (C or C++ doesn't seem as web-friendly as other languages). There's always Jave + JNI, but maybe that introduces other complications (not sure). Any feedback appreciated.

  In case you haven't figured it out by now, Oracle reserves an awful lot of announcements for Oracle Open World. As a result, the show is always a lot of fun for geeks. What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one. I understand, not everyone can have the raw animal magnetism of a sysadmin, or the debonair sophistication of a C++ developer, so some of you have no choice but to pretend. I won't judge.   A while ago (probably a decade ago, actually) I saw a report on a tracking system maintained by a U.S. Army artillery control unit.  This system was capable of maintaining a bearing on various units in the field to help avoid friendly fire.  I consider the U.S. Army to be the most technologically advanced fighting force on Earth, but to my terror I saw something on the title bar of an application displayed on a laptop behind one of the soldiers they were interviewing: Tracking.mdb Oh yes.  Microsoft Office Suite had made it onto the battlefield.  My hope is that it was just running as a front-end for a more proficient database (no offense Access people), or that the soldier was tracking something else like KP duty or fantasy football scores.  But I could also see the corporate equivalent of a pointy-haired boss walking into a cube and asking someone who had piddled with Access to build a database for HR forms.  Except this pointy-haired boss would have been a general, the cube would have been a tank, and the HR forms would have been targets that, if something went amiss, would have been hit by a 500lb artillery round. Hope that solider could write a good query

• From Oracle PL/SQL Developer to Java programmer - Is it a good decision? [on hold]

  I will explain my question in simple words. I have little over 1 year experience in Oracle. My dream is to be "called" as a 'Developer', be it database developer if not software developer. But right now I don't develop anything neither I am in good touch with PL/SQL and other Oracle Utilites like SQL*LOADER, shell scripting and stuff like that as I am only a System Analyst where I analyze and configure database using SQL queries. To be honest, I know very basic PL/SQL and good knowledge in SQL but that won't ever give me a chance to be a developer as I am lagging way behind the "real" developers knowledge. Now I feel I should learn JAVA as well so that I can cope up with the competition. But I am too scared to learn new things as it will take much more time which will indirectly increase my useless work experince(just analyzing) which values nothing in todays market. Moreover that, I am too lazy to work hard i.e. to study and not to work during office hours. To sum it up I am lazy and confused and scared but I want to learn things as well but don't know if I am intelligent enough to learn whole of PL/SQL or to master any other language. Is there any other way from which I can feel confident? Actually I even feel sometimes that after 2-3 years if I still don't achieve my goal, I won't ever be able to reach my destination. I just want to live my dream of being a developer. Give me some tips and hopes but not false hopes.

  One of our goals for the Solaris CIFS Service is to provide seamless Windows interoperability: not just to deliver ubiquitous, multi-protocol file sharing, which is obviously a major part of this project, but to support Windows services at a fundamental level.  It's an ongoing mission and our latest update includes support for Windows remote management. Remote management is extremely important to Windows administrators and one of the mainstay tools is Computer Management. Computer Management is a Windows administration application, actually a collection of Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tools, that can be used to configure, monitor and manage local and remote services and resources.  The MMC is an extensible framework of registered components, known as snap-ins, which allows Computer Management to provide comprehensive management features for both the local system and remote systems on the network. Supported Computer Management features include: Share ManagementSupport for share management is relatively complete.  You can create, delete, list and configure shares.  It's not yet possible to change the maximum allowed or number of users properties but other properties, including the Share Permissions, can be managed via the MMC. Users, Groups and ConnectionsYou can view local SMB users and groups, monitor user connections and see the list of open files. If necessary, you can also disconnect users and/or close files. • How to analyze data

  We are working on an application that allows user to search/read some content in a particular domain. We wanted to add some capability in the app which can suggest user some content based on the usage pattern (analyze data based on frequency and relevance). Currently every time user search or read something we do store that information in backend database. We would like to use this data to present some additional content to user. Could someone explain what kind of tools will be required for such a job and any example? And what this concept is called, data analysis? data mining? business intelligence? or something else? Update: Sorry for being too broad, here is an example SQL Database (Just to give an idea, actual db is little different with normalization and stuff) Table: UserArticles Fields: UserName | ArticleId | ArticleTitle | DateVisited | ArticleCategory Table: CategoryArticles Fields: Category | Article Title | Author etc. One Category may have one more articles. One user may have read the same article multiple times (in this case we place additional entry in the user article table. Task: Use the information availabel in UserArticle table and rank categories in order which would be presented to user automatically in other part of application. Factors to be considered are frequency and recency. This might be possible through simple queries or may require specialized tools. Either way, the task is what mention above. I am not too sure which route to take, hence the question. Thoughts??

• How to deal with a CEO making all technical decision but with little technical knowledge ?

  Hi, Question posted anonymously for obvious reasons. I am working in a company with a dev group of 5-6 developers, and I am in a situation which I have a hard time dealing with. Every technical choice (language, framework, database, database scheme, configuration scheme, etc...) is decided by the CEO, often without much rationale. It is very hard to modify those choices, and his main argument consists in "I don't like this", even though we propose several alternative with detailed pros/cons. He will also decide to rewrite from scratch our core product without giving a reason why, and he never participates to dev meetings because he considers it makes things slower... I am already looking at alternative job opportunities, but I was wondering if there anything we (the developers) could do to improve the situation. Two examples which shocked me: he will ask us to implement something akin to configuration management, but he reject any existing framework because they are not written in the language he likes (even though the implementation language is irrelevant). He also expects us to be able to write those systems in a couple of days, "because it is very simple". he keeps rewriting from scratch on his own our core product because the current codebase is too bad (codebase whose design was his). We are at our third rewrite in one year, each rewrite worse than the previous one. Things I have tried so far is doing elaborate benchmarks on our product (he keeps complaining that our software is too slow, and justifies rewrites to make it faster), implement solutions with existing products as working proof instead of just making pros/cons charts, etc... But still 90 % of those efforts go to the trashbox (never with any kind of rationale behind he does not like it, again), and often get reprimanded because I don't do exactly as he wants (not realizing that what he wants is impossible).

• Remove languages in translations?

  Hi, I use spell-checker for 4 languages, en, de, fr, and lb. If I enable Spellchecking and writing aids for en, de or fr in System -> Administration -> Language Support there will be multiple versions of each language available, e.g. en , en_CA, en_GB, ... Is there a possibility to select only one of those language versions while enabling the language, or removing the others afterwards. It would be enough to remove them from the selection menu. I would like to use the version which is equal to the country the language originally comes from: e.g. de_DE, fr_FR, en_GB. For lb there is currently only lb_LU so there is no problem (yet). Instead of 4 languages I currently have around 20, which is kind of annoying when switching the language ( which I do quite often). There might be a similar problem for the menu translations, where if I understand correctly you can choose the order in which translations are applied if they exist. Any suggestions?
