• How can you tell if an activity is starting or resuming?

  I have an activity which pulls some JSON from my server, and then uses it to draw a list. That list launches further activities. My problem is that I can't figure out a way to tell if the activity is still alive when you go back to it, so I end up re-querying my JSON from the server and redrawing the list every time the user goes back to the activity. How can I tell if my activity is still alive so I can skip the redraw? Using onRestart works for hitting the home key then going back, but onCreate not onRestart is called if I selected a list item then hit back.

  I'm working to create a simple Python script that will ultimately tell you how many blog entries were posted in a given month, and the pyblog app is proving very helpful. However, when I create the blog object, I don't know how to access it's various attributes. • Space requirements of a merge-sort

  I'm trying to understand the space requirements for a Mergesort, O(n). I see that time requirements are basically, amount of levels(logn) * merge(n) so that makes (n log n). Now, we are still allocating n per level, in 2 different arrays, left and right. I do understand that the key here is that when the recursive functions return the space gets deallocated, but I'm not seeing it too obvious. Besides, all the info I find, just states space required is O(n) but don't explain it. • Quick way to do data lookup in PHP

  I have a data table with 600,000 records that is around 25 megabytes large. It is indexed by a 4 byte key. Is there a way to find a row in such dataset quickly with PHP without resorting to MySQL? The website in question is mostly static with minor PHP code and no database dependencies and therefore fast. I would like to add this data without having to use MySQL if possible. In C++ I would memory map the file and do a binary search in it. Is there a way to do something similar in PHP?

  Hi, Is it possible to access a parent class from within an attribute. For example I would like to create a DropDownListAttribute which can be applied to a property of a viewmodel class in MVC and then create a drop down list from an editor template. I am following a similar line as Kazi Manzur Rashid here. He adds the collection of categories into viewdata and retrieves them using the key supplied to the attribute. I would like to do something like the below, public ExampleDropDownViewModel { public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Categories {get;set;} [DropDownList("Categories")] public int CategoryID { get;set; } } The attribute takes the name of the property containing the collection to bind to.   matrix is a list of lists. I've to return a dictionary of the form {i:(l1[i],l2[i],...,lm[i])} Where the key i is matched with a tuple the i'th elements from each list.   I'm looking in to Magento's filtering options (Ecommerce System and PHP Framekwork with an expansive ORM system). Specifically the addFieldToFilter method. In this method, you specify a SQLish filter by passing in a single element array, with the key indicating the type of filter. For example, array('eq'=>'bar') //eq means equal array('neq'=>'bar') //neq means not equal would each give you a where clause that looks like where field = 'bar'; where field != 'bar'; So, deep in the bowels of the source, I found a comparison type named 'moreq' that maps to a = comparison operator array('moreq'=>'27') where field >= 27 The weird thing is, there's already a 'gteq' comparision type array('gteq'=>'27') where field >= 27 So, my question is, what does moreq stand for? Is is some special SQL concept that's supported in other databases that the Magento guys wants to map to MySQL, or is it just "more required" and an example what happens when you're doing rapid agile and trying to maintain backwards compatibility.

  We use the ASP.NET profile subsystem to associate key-value pairs of information with users. I am implementing functionality for the deletion of users. I have been using the ProfileManager.DeleteProfile(string userName) method, but I have noticed that this leaves a row in the aspnet_Users table in the aspnetdb database we use to store the profile information. Clearly, I could manipulate the database directly, but I am reluctant to do so. What is the best way to ensure all information assocaited with a user is deleted from the aspnetdb? PS: there is a tantalising Membership.DeleteUser(string userName, bool deleteEverything) method, but this returns a database connection error. A web.config issue?

• MapReduce results seem limited to 100?

  I'm playing around with Map Reduce in MongoDB and python and I've run into a strange limitation. I'm just trying to count the number of "book" records. It works when there are less than 100 records but when it goes over 100 records the count resets for some reason. • How do you encrypt data between client and server running in Flash and Java?

  We have a multiclient system where the client is written in Flash and the server is written in Java. Currently, communication is done in Flash by usage of flash.net.Socket and the protocol is written in JSON. The server uses a custom port to receive connections and then proceed to talk with each client. As expected, data is sent and received on both fronts as raw bytes, which are then decoded as needed. We would like to encrypt the communication between clients and server. I have some basic understanding about public/private key encryption, but I do not know what is the best way to exchange keys or what libraries are available (on both languages) to do this. What would be the best strategy to attack this problem and where should I start looking for libraries/methods to implement this encryption?

  I currently have my web.xml configured to catch 404s and send them to my spring controller which will perform a search given the original URL request. The problem lies in resolving the view's path to the /WEB-INF/jsp/ directory. Using a logger in my JBoss setup, I can see that when I test this search controller by going to a non-existent page, the following occurs: Server can't find the request Request is sent to 404 error page (in this case my search controller) Search controller performs search Search controller returns view name (for this illustration, we'll assume test.jsp is returned) Based off of server logger, I can see that org.springframework.web.servlet.view.JstlView is initialized once my search controller returns the view name (so I can assume it is being picked up correctly by the InternalResourceViewResolver) Server attempts to return content to browser resulting in a 404! A couple things confuse me about this: I'm not 100% sure why this isn't resolving when test.jsp clearly exists under the /WEB-INF/jsp/ directory. Even if there was some other problem, why would this result in a 404? Shouldn't a 404 error page that results in another 404 theoretically create an infinite loop? Thanks for any help or pointers! • PHP: Safe way to store decryptable passwords

  I'm making an application in PHP and there is a requirement that it must be possible to decrypt the passwords in order to avoid problems in the future with switching user database to different system. What encryption/decryption algorithm would you suggest? Is it good idea to just store the encrypted value and then compare the future authentication attempts to that value? Are the passwords still as safe as MD5/SHA1 when the private key is not available to the attacker (Hidden in USB drive for example)? I should still use salting, right? What encryption libraries should I use for PHP?

I have a property called EntryType which is an int. There are 2 available numbers 1 or 2 Lets say I had 3 items that my query is working with 2 of them had the EntryType = 1 and the 3rd had EntryType2. The first records had a ItemAmount of 55.00 and the 3rd had a ItemAmount of 50.00 How can I group using something simlar to above but minus the ItemAmount of 50.00 from the grouped amount to return 60.00? Any help would be great!!

• Avoiding jagged text when pasting into vi?

  Hello Although I have no problem using SecureCRT (5.1.2 build 274) to work from Windows and connect to PC's running Linux, I have a problem when connecting to an embedded Asterisk appliance that provides"vi" through BusyBox 1.4.1 (2008-03-10).
