• Problems with VBScript - RegRead when running as a service

  I am working on a script that runs under a custom installation utility, which is running as a service. To get the current user name the script executes this command: str_Acct_Name_Val = "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Logon User Name" str_Acct_Name = RegRead(str_Acct_Name_Val) When I run the script from the command prompt, it can read that value just fine (under an administrator account). When the value is attempted to be read with service/local system privileges, the read fails. What is the problem here? EDIT: Some additional information. When running as a service calling the current user name returns "SYSTEM" and my guess is that HKCU doesn't "exist" under the view of the SYSTEM, since there is technically no current user. There is a user logged in at the time, but not in the scope of the running script. Maybe there is somewhere in HKLM I could find the currently logged on user?

• Outlook 2003 Add-In Setup Project with COM DLL Deployment Problem

  Hi, I developed an Outlook 2003 add-in which uses the com dll redemption. I created a visual studio 2008 setup project, added a custom action to run "caspol.exe -machine -addgroup 1 -strong -hex [key] -noname -noversion FullTrust -n \"Name\" -description \"desc\" and moved the registry keys under software to HKLM as described in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136646.aspx#AutoDeployVSTOse_InstallingtheAddinforAllUsers to ensure all-users compatibility. I included the redemption.dll in the setup with vsdrfCOMSelfReg (vsdrfCOM throwed an error). My problem is: When installing the setup on a test machine under an admin account, it runs fine under all users, however when we use the company wide software deployment which runs under a system account the setup executes but the add-in wont load. If I repair the installation with an admin account again it loads just fine. Shouldn't a system account have the required permissions to install all of the components? What options do I have? Thanks for any suggestions.

  we use an application that has an "export to excel" feature that doesn't work on PC's that done have outlook express installed. i know, you're thinking "WTF does outlook express have to do with excel files?" i asked the same thing, and here's what i found: the file being generated is actually one of those Microsoft Single File Web Pages (.mht) and NOT an excel file you need to have outlook express installed to actually view a .mht file. i've explained to their support people that just because you can slap a .xls on a file and excel will open it does not mean its an excel file, and does not mean that this is the right way to do it. how would you explain that this is not proper?

• How do I get a TextBox to only accept numeric input in WPF?

  I'm looking to accept digits and the decimal point, but no sign. I've looked at samples using the NumericUpDown control for WinForms, and this sample of a NumericUpDown custom control from Microsoft. But so far it seems like NumericUpDown (supported by WPF or not) is not going to provide the functionality that I want. The way my app is designed, nobody in their right mind is going to want to mess with the arrows. They don't make any practical sense, in the context of my app. So I'm looking for a simple way to make a standard WPF TextBox accept only the characters that I want. Is this possible?   Hi, I'm done some WinForms work in C# but now moving to have to develop a web application front end in .NET (C#). I have experience developing web apps in Ruby on Rails (& a little with Java with JSP pages & struts mvc). Should I jump straight to MVC framework? (as opposed to going ASP.net) That is from the point of view of future direction for Microsoft & as well ease in ramping up from myself. Or if you like, given my experience to date, what would the pros/cons for me re MVC versus ASP.net? thanks

• Log to rolling CSV file with Enterprise Library

  Need logging to: Rolling file, to avoid 1 big log file. CSV format for easier look up. I can see EntLib (5.0) have Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.RollingFlatFileTraceListener to log to rolling log file. To make the log entries look like a CSV row, I can change the Logging.Formatters.TextFormatter.Template to put double quote around the values. Also change the Listener's Footer and Header to nothing, so they won't be output. Under normal circumstance, this would give me a well formed CSV file. However if a token value in the Template contain double quote, this would not be escaped, hence the log file become an invalid CSV file. Is there any way to resolve this? Is there any alternative solutions to this problem?

• Workaround for the Mono PrivateFontCollection.AddFontFile bug

  When I call the PrivateFontCollection.AddFontFile method in Mono.net It always returns a standard font-family. This bug has already been reported on several websites, but as far as I know without a way to solve it. The bug itself isn't fixed in the Mono-libraries yet. Is there any workaround for it? EDIT: As a reaction on henchman's answer I will post the code: PrivateFontCollection pfc = new PrivateFontCollection(); pfc.AddFontFile("myFontFamily.ttf"); myFontFamily = pfc.Families[0x00]; Font myFont = new Font(myFontFamily,14.0f); I know this code will work fine on the Microsoft.Net framework, but when executing on Mono, it just gives a standard font-family (I think it is Arial) with the name of myFontFamily.ttf

• What is a good Visio Enterprise Architect replacement?

  I've been using Visio 2002/2003 Enterprise Architect to do my database schema design visually and then forward-generate the DDL to create the database. I wanted to switch to Visio 2007, but while it does have database diagramming support, it doesn't have the ability to generate DDL. Bummer. I am really disappointed because it seems like Microsoft has completely abandoned this feature. You can't do it in Visual Studio (that I've found). You can sorta do it with SQL Server Management Studio if you insert database diagrams into your database, but any edits to the schema immediately take effect. Has anyone found a good program to do this? I'm hoping to find one that is free and can generate DDL/SQL for SQL Server.

  I'm experiencing a weird problem with a particular SQL login. When I connect to the server in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (2008) using this account, I cannot see any of the tables, stored procedures etc. that this account should have access to. When I connect to the same server within Visual Studio (2008) with the same account everything is there. I've also had a co-worker connect to the server using the same login and he's able to view everything as well. The strange thing is if I switch logins, I'm able to view objects that the other account has access to which indicates that there isn't a problem with MSSMS on my PC. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can diagnose this problem? I've check to make sure I don't have any Table filters etc.

• Continous Build Integration with SourceSafe and Windows Batch Files

  I want to create a continuous build integration system for .NET using just Windows batch files and Visual Source Safe. I've come up with the following batch file so far - set ssdir=\\xxxx\vss cd d:\mydir "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual SourceSafe\ss.exe" diff "$/sourcedir" -R -Q > diffout.txt This will spit out a file containg lines like "SourceSafe files different from local files" when a change has been made. My challenge is to figure out if those lines are in the file, then do a get and kick off MSBuild if they are. I'd then schedule the batch file to run every 10 minutes or so. Anyone got any thoughts on how to do that? Or any other ways of doing continuous build integration without downloading a complicated build automation system? Update: Happy to use cscript or powershell too, though not really familiar with those environments. My main aim is to avoid installing 3rd party software

  Hi, The question is about Armenian. I'm using sql server 2005, collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, data mostly is in Armenian and we can't use unicode. I tested on ms sql 2008 with a windows collation for armenian language ( Cyrillic_General_100_ ), I have found here, ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188046.aspx ) but it didn't help. I have a function, that orders hex values and a lower function, which takes each char in each string and converts it to it's lower form, but it's not acceptable solution, it works really slow, calling that functions on every column of a huge table. Is there any solution for this issue not using unicode and not working with hex values manually?

  Hi, I've spent many many hours tonight reading up on implementing the event-based asynchronous pattern Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any articles at all on witting a class that only supports one Async invocation. Every example I've seen assumes that a method call will be called more than once and thus, should have a userState object passed into the MethodNameAsync You'll see that MS makes mention of this in the third bullet point on this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228974(VS.80).aspx under the "Simultaneously Executing Operations" heading. But I'm confused. Should I be using AsyncOperation and AsyncOperationManager classes to have asynchronous functionality where a method can only be called by one thread at a time? • Debugging feature activation in SharePoint 2007

  I have a SharePoint feature that is activated under 'Site Collection Features' that is having some issues being activated. I've activated it through the stsadm as well as the SharePoint UI, both unsuccessful. The feature toggles from deactivated to activated, but the result that should be there is not. The result is some pages that should be created. So my question is does anyone know of a way to step through the activation of features process? I'd like to be able to attach Visual Studio 2008 to the browser and step through a few breakpoints that I've set.   hi, I have methods which return interface and some methods which accepts interface as parameters. I am trying to use Net DataContractSerializer but I am getting following error... The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter http://tempuri.org/:id. The InnerException message was 'Error in line 1 position 120. XML 'Element' 'http://tempuri.org/:id' does not contain expected attribute 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/:Type'. The deserializer has no knowledge of which type to deserialize. Check that the type being serialized has the same contract as the type being deserialized.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Please help me how to resolve this error.... • Inserting clobs into oracle with ODBC

  I'm trying to insert a clob into Oracle. If I try this with an OdbcConnection it does not insert the data into the database. It returns 1 row affected and no errors but nothing is inserted into the database. It does work with an OracleConnection. However, using the Microsoft OracleClient makes our webservices often crash with an AccessViolationException (Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.). This happens a lot when we use OracleDataAdapter.Fill(dataset). So using this doesn't seem like an option. Is there any way to insert/update clobs with more then 4.000 characters from .Net with an OdbcConnection?

But, in Word, I see the code in black-and-white format; I loose the syntax highlighting as I get in the source code editor (for me, gvim). So, my question is, is there any way to do syntax highlighting of C/C++ source code in MS Word?

• mingw32-make : "Input line too long" issue

  We have a Makefile which runs on a Windows 2003 machine and we are using mingw32-make for it. Since the Makefile has many include paths, it exceeds the buffer size of 8K that the cmd can handle [Ref - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473/EN-US/due to which the compilation results in "input line too long" issue. I wanted to know the following - What would be the best way to optimize the Makefile as I have already removed unwanted compiler switches, include paths etc. Is there any way we can put all the INCLUDE paths in one .txt file and import it in the Makefile.I could not find any mingw32 documentation for the same. • Problem wit MDAC when trying to compile in VS2008 using x64 bit target platform

  I am trying to compile an 32 bit application. I am aware of problems with it but that is why its being compiled on 64 bit version. I am hanging at this problem. Application uses lots of sql stuff. In sqltypes.h file: (provided by MDAC) #ifdef _WIN64 typedef INT64 SQLLEN; typedef UINT64 SQLULEN; typedef UINT64 SQLSETPOSIROW; #else For some reason when its compiled on 32 bit platform it works great But when I try building it on 64 it goes berserk. Error 61 error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'SQLLEN' ..\external\microsoft sdk\include\sqltypes.h 50 It does not recognize INT64, UINT64. Is there something I need to enable so it will work under 64 build process? Missing some #include or #define? Any help would be great Thanks
