  • Walking to the North Pole to raise money to protect children from cruelty.

    Hi, my name is Luca. I joined Oracle in 2005 and I am currently working as a Dell EMEA Channel Manager UK, Ireland and Iberia and I am responsible for the Oracle Dell relationship for the above 3 countries. On the 31st of March 2011 I will set out to complete the ultimate challenge. I will walk and ski across the frozen Arctic to the Top of The World: the GEOGRAPHIC North Pole. While dragging all my supplies over 60 Nautical miles of moving sea ice, in temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. I will spend 8 to 10 days preparing, working, living and travelling to the North Pole to 90 degree north. In November I spent a full week of training for this trip.( watch my video). This gave me the opportunity to meet the rest of the team, testing all the gear and carrying an 18inch tyre around the country side for 8 hours per day. I am honored to embark this challenging journey to support the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). The NSPCC helped more than 750,000 young people to speak out for the first time about abuse they had suffered. I am a firm believer that in order to build a stronger, healthier and wiser society we need to support and help future generations from the beginning of their life journey.   • July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 31 (sys.dm_server_services)

    The last DMV for this month long blog session is the sys.dm_server_services DMV. This DMV returns information about your SQL Server, Full-Text, and SQL Server Agent related services. To further illustrate the information this DMV contains, lets run it against our Training instance that we have been using for this blog series. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_server_services The first column returned by this DMV is the actual Service Name. The next columns are the startup_type and startup_type_desc columns which display your chosen method for how a particular method should be started. The next columns status and status_desc display the current status for each of your Services on the instance. The process_id column represents the server process id. The last_startup_time column gives you the last time that a particular service was started. The service_account column provides you with the name of the account that is used to control the service. The filename column gives you the full path to the executable for the service. Lastly we have the is_clustered column and the cluster_nodename which indicates whether or not a particular service is clustered and is part of a resource cluster group, and if so, the cluster node that the service is installed on. This is a good DMV to provide you with a quick snapshot view of the current SQL Server services you have on your instance.   • Setting up a very mixed Active Directory network to work with PowerShell Remote Administration

    Summary: I want to be able to monitor the computers on my network, but don't need it to be automated. We're too small to purchase anything like MOM, but too big to do anything manually (~100 machines in two locations). I just keep running into issues, and was wondering if there's a master list of Group Policy settings I can distribute to my environment to get Remote Powershell working. Environment: Our AD network is pretty mixed. The end users have XP SP3, Win 7, and Win 7 x64. The servers include Win2k3 SP2, Win2k8, Win2k8 x64, Win2k8 R2, and Win2k8 R2 x64. Details: I'm trying to get it to work with Remote Powershell, but I run into errors like the following: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client cannot process the request. Default authentication may be used with an IP address under the following conditions: the transport is HTTPS or the destination is in the TrustedHosts list, and explicit credentials are provided. Use winrm.cmd to configure TrustedHosts. Note that computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be authenticated. For more information on how to set TrustedHosts run the following command: winrm help config. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. + CategoryInfo : OpenError: (:) [], PSRemotingTransportException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : PSSessionStateBroken Then I go to the computer (Win2k3 SP2 server) and run winrm quickconfig per the recommendations via google, and it says: Make these changes [y/n]? y WinRM has been updated to receive requests. Consult the logs and documentation for the WS-Management service running on the destination, most commonly IIS or WinRM. If the destination is the WinRM service, run the following command on the destination to analyze and configure the WinRM service: "winrm quickconfig". Error number: -2144108526 0x80338012 The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request. Verify that the service on the destination is running and is accepting requests. Consult the logs and documentation for the WS-Management service running on the destination, most commonly IIS or WinRM. If the destination is the WinRM service, run the following command on the destination to analyze and configure the WinRM service: "winrm quickconfig". That's right. It tells me to remedy my winrm quickconfig failure by running winrm quickconfig. I don't want to band-aid this project one google search at a time. I'm sure there is a step-by-step tutorial out there on how to set up a network for powershell remote administration. Does anyone know of one? Books are acceptable. Thanks in advance!   • Announcing MySQL Enterprise Backup 3.7.1

    The MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) Team is pleased to announce the release of MEB 3.7.1, a maintenance release version that includes bug fixes and enhancements to some of the existing features. The most important feature introduced in this release is Automatic Incremental Backup. The new  argument syntax for the --incremental-base option is introduced which makes it simpler to perform automatic incremental backups. When the options --incremental & --incremental-base=history:last_backup are combined, the mysqlbackup command  uses the metadata in the mysql.backup_history table to determine the LSN to use as the lower limit of the incremental backup. You no longer need to keep track of the actual LSN (as in the option --start-lsn=LSN) or even the location of the previous backup (as in the option --incremental-base=dir:directory_path)This release also incudes various bug fixes related to some options used in MEB. The most important are few of them as listed below,1. The option --force now allows overwriting InnoDB data and log files in  combination with the apply-log and apply-incremental-backup options, and replacing the image file in combination with the backup-to-image and backup-dir-to-image options. 2. Resolved a bug that prevented MEB to interface with third-party storage managers to execute backup and restore jobs in combination with the SBT interface and associated --sbt* options for mysqlbackup. 3.   • Is that possible to route all mails sent to a mailbox to another server's mailbox

    I have a Linux server that has local mail service. There are few user accounts on this server. User may send the mail to each other but that only restrict to LAN environment only. For example, I may # mail user1 to send mail to user1. User are not able to send mail to public. Some service like hylafax using this local mail service to send notification of fax status. I don't want to manage and maintain local mail service anymore. I have subscribed a package from ISP to host a public domain of my own. I wish to have my hylafax service to able to send the notification mails to public mail server, is that possible to do it? It is great if all mails that send to local mail server may forward to public mail server. That makes the local mail service serve mail forward only.

  • WSDL-world vs CLR-world – some differences

    A change in mindset is required when switching between a typical CLR application and a web service application. There are some things in a CLR environment that just don’t add-up in a WSDL arena (and vice-versa). I’m listing some of them here. When I say WSDL-world, I’m mostly talking with respect to a WCF Service and / or a Web Service. No (direct) Method Overloading: You definitely can have overloaded methods in a, say, Console application, but when it comes to a WCF / Web Services application, you need to adorn these overloaded methods with a special attribute so the service knows which specific method to invoke. When you’re working with WCF, use the Name property of the OperationContract attribute to provide unique names. 1: [OperationContract(Name = "AddInt")] 2: int Add(int arg1, int arg2); 3:  4: [OperationContract(Name = "AddDouble")] 5: double Add(double arg1, double arg2); By default, the proxy generates the code for this as: 1: [System.ServiceModel.OperationContractAttribute( 2: Action="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfService/AddInt", 3: ReplyAction="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfService/AddIntResponse")] 4: int AddInt(int arg1, int arg2); 5: 6: [System.ServiceModel.OperationContractAttribute( 7: Action="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfServiceExtend/AddDouble", 8: ReplyAction="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfServiceExtend/AddDoubleResponse")] 9: double AddDouble(double arg1, double arg2); With Web Services though the story is slightly different. Using interchangeable data types: See details on this here. Type visibility: In a CLR-based application, if you mark a field as private, well we all know, it’s ‘private’. Coming to a WSDL side of things, in a Web Service, private fields and web methods will not get generated in the proxy. In WCF however, all your operation contracts will be public as they get implemented from an interface. Even in case your ServiceContract interface is declared internal/private, you will see it as a public interface in the proxy. This is because type visibility is a CLR concept and has no bearing on WCF. Also if a private field has the [DataMember] attribute in a data contract, it will get emitted in the proxy class as a public property for the very same reason. 1: [DataContract] 2: public struct Person 3: { 4: [DataMember] 5: private int _x; 6:  7: [DataMember] 8: public int Id { get; set; } 9:  10: [DataMember] 11: public string FirstName { get; set; } 12:  13: [DataMember] 14: public string Header { get; set; } 15: } 16: } See the ‘_x’ field is a private member with the [DataMember] attribute, but the proxy class shows as below: 1: [System.Runtime.Serialization.DataMemberAttribute()] 2: public int _x { 3: get { 4: return this._xField; 5: } 6: set { 7: if ((this._xField.Equals(value) != true)) { 8: this._xField = value; 9: this.RaisePropertyChanged("_x"); 10: } 11: } 12: } Passing derived types to web methods / operation contracts: Once again, in a CLR application, I can have a derived class be passed as a parameter where a base class is expected. I have the following set up for my WCF service. 1: [DataContract] 2: public class Employee 3: { 4: [DataMember(Name = "Id")] 5: public int EmployeeId { get; set; } 6:  7: [DataMember(Name="FirstName")] 8: public string FName { get; set; } 9:  10: [DataMember] 11: public string Header { get; set; } 12: } 13:  14: [DataContract] 15: public class Manager : Employee 16: { 17: [DataMember] 18: private int _x; 19: } 20:  21: // service contract 22: [OperationContract] 23: Manager SaveManager(Employee employee); 24:  25: // in my calling code 26: Manager manager = new Manager {_x = 1, FirstName = "abc"}; 27: manager = LearnWcfServiceClient.SaveManager(manager); The above will throw an exception saying: In short, this is saying, that a Manager type was found where an Employee type was expected! Hierarchy flattening of interfaces in WCF: See details on this here. In CLR world, you’ll see the entire hierarchy as is. That’s another difference. Using ref parameters: * can use ref for parameters, but operation contract should not be one-way (gives an error when you do an update service reference)   => bad programming; create a return object that is composed of everything you need! This one kind of stumped me. Not sure why I tried this, but you can pass parameters prefixed with ref keyword* (* terms and conditions apply). The main issue is this, how would we know the changes that were made to a ‘ref’ input parameter are returned back from the service and updated to the local variable? Turns out both Web Services and WCF make this tracking happen by passing the input parameter in the response soap. This way when the deserializer does its magic, it maps all the elements of the response xml thereby updating our local variable. Here’s what I’m talking about. 1: [WebMethod(MessageName = "HelloAnyGalaxy")] 2: public string HelloGalaxy(ref string galaxyName) 3: { 4: string output = string.Format("Hello {0}", galaxyName); 5: if (galaxyName == "Andromeda") 6: { 7: galaxyName = string.Format("{0} (2.5 million light-years away)", galaxyName); 8: } 9: return output; 10: } This is how the request and response look like in soapUI. As I said above, the behavior is quite similar for WCF as well. But the catch comes when you have a one-way web methods / operation contracts. If you have an operation contract whose return type is void, is marked one-way and that has ref parameters then you’ll get an error message when you try to reference such a service. 1: [OperationContract(Name = "Sum", IsOneWay = true)] 2: void Sum(ref double arg1, ref double arg2); 3:  4: public void Sum(ref double arg1, ref double arg2) 5: { 6: arg1 += arg2; 7: } This is what I got when I did an update to my service reference: Makes sense, because a OneWay operation is… one-way – there’s no returning from this operation. You can also have a one-way web method: 1: [SoapDocumentMethod(OneWay = true)] 2: [WebMethod(MessageName = "HelloAnyGalaxy")] 3: public void HelloGalaxy(ref string galaxyName) This will throw an exception message similar to the one above when you try to update your web service reference. In the CLR space, there’s no such concept of a ‘one-way’ street! Yes, there’s void, but you very well can have ref parameters returned through such a method. Just a point here; although the ref/out concept sounds cool, it’s generally is a code-smell. The better approach is to always return an object that is composed of everything you need returned from a method. These are some of the differences that we need to bear when dealing with services that are different from our daily ‘CLR’ life.

This session presents an overview of the main phases of the MySQL optimizer and the primary optimizations done to the query. These optimizations are based on a combination of logical transformations and cost-based decisions. Examples of optimization strategies the presentation covers are the main query transformations, the join optimizer, the data access selection strategies, and the range optimizer. For the cost-based optimizations, an overview of the cost model and the data used for doing the cost estimations is included. Saturday, 1.00 pm, Room Golden Gate 6: Overview of New Optimizer Features in MySQL 5.6—Manyi Lu, Oracle Many optimizer features have been added into MySQL 5.6. This session provides an introduction to these great features. Multirange read, index condition pushdown, and batched key access will yield huge performance improvements on large data volumes. Structured explain, explain for update/delete/insert, and optimizer tracing will help users analyze and speed up queries. This BoF presents common techniques for query optimization, covers what is new in MySQL 5.6, and provides a discussion forum in which attendees can tell the MySQL optimizer team which optimizations they would like to see in the future. Sunday, 1.15 pm, Room Golden Gate 8: Query Performance Comparison of MySQL 5.5 and MySQL 5.6—Øystein Grøvlen, Oracle MySQL Release 5.6 contains several improvements in the query optimizer that create improved performance for complex queries. This presentation looks at how MySQL 5.6 improves the performance of many of the queries in the DBT-3 benchmark. Based on the observed improvements, the presentation discusses what makes the specific queries perform better in Release 5.6. It describes the relevant new optimization techniques and gives examples of the types of queries that will benefit from these techniques. Sunday, 4.15 pm, Room Golden Gate 4: Powerful EXPLAIN in MySQL 5.6—Evgeny Potemkin, Oracle The EXPLAIN command of MySQL has long been a very useful tool for understanding how MySQL will execute a query. Release 5.6 of the MySQL database offers several new additions that give more-detailed information about the query plan and make it easier to understand at the same time. This presentation gives an overview of new EXPLAIN features: structured EXPLAIN in JSON format, EXPLAIN for INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE, and optimizer tracing. Examples in the session give insights into how you can take advantage of the new features. They show how these features supplement and relate to each other and to classical EXPLAIN and how and why the MySQL server chooses a particular query plan. The Oracle documentation gives the following definition: If a subquery_factoring_clause refers to its own query_name in the subquery that defines it, then the subquery_factoring_clause is said to be recursive. A recursive subquery_factoring_clause must contain two query blocks: the first is the anchor member and the second is the recursive member. The anchor member must appear before the recursive member, and it cannot reference query_name. The anchor member can be composed of one or more query blocks combined by the set operators: UNION ALL, UNION, INTERSECT or MINUS. The recursive member must follow the anchor member and must reference query_name exactly once. You must combine the recursive member with the anchor member using the UNION ALL set operator. This new feature is a replacement of this old Hierarchical Query feature that exists in Oracle since the days of Aladdin (well, at least, release 2 of the database in 1977). Everyone remembers the old syntax : select empno, ename, job, mgr, level      from   emp      start with mgr is null      connect by prior empno = mgr; that could/should be rewritten (but not as often as it should) as withT_Emp (empno, name, level) as        ( select empno, ename, job, mgr, level             from   emp             start with mgr is null             connect by prior empno = mgr        ) select * from   T_Emp; which uses the "with" syntax, whose main advantage is to clarify the readability of the query. Although very efficient, this syntax had the disadvantage of being a Non-Ansi Sql Syntax. Ansi-Sql version of Hierarchical Query is called Recursive Subquery Factoring. As of 11gR2, Oracle got compliant with Ansi Sql and introduced Recursive Subquery Factoring. It is basically an extension of the "With" clause that enables recursion. Now, the new syntax for the query would be with T_Emp (empno, name, job, mgr, hierlevel) as       ( select E.empno, E.ename, E.job, E.mgr, 1 from emp E where E.mgr is null         union all         select E.empno, E.ename, E.job, E.mgr, T.hierlevel + 1from emp E                                                                                                            join T_Emp T on ( E.mgr = T.empno ) ) select * from   T_Emp; The anchor member is a replacement for the "start with" The recursive member is processed through iterations. It joins the Source table (EMP) with the result from the Recursive Query itself (T_Emp) Each iteration works with the results of all its preceding iterations.     Iteration 1 works on the results of the first query     Iteration 2 works on the results of Iteration 1 and first query     Iteration 3 works on the results of Iteration 1, Iteration 2 and first query. So, knowing that, the Sudoku query it self-explaining; The anchor member contains the "Problem" : The Initial Sudoku and the Position of the first "hole" in the grid. The recursive member tries to replace the considered hole with any of the 9 digit that would satisfy the 3 rules of sudoku Recursion progress through the grid until it is complete.   Another example :  Fibonaccy Numbers :  un = (un-1) + (un-2) with Fib (u1, u2, depth) as   (select 1, 1, 1 from dual    union all    select u1+u2, u1, depth+1 from Fib where depth<10) select u1 from Fib; Conclusion Oracle brings here a new feature (which, to be honest, already existed on other concurrent systems) and extends the power of the database to new boundaries.   • XUbuntu vsftpd couldnt restart

    # sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service vsftpd restart Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the stop(8) and then start(8) utilities, e.g. stop vsftpd ; start vsftpd. The restart(8) utility is also available. vsftpd start/running, process 3237 then I tried this # service vsftpd start vsftpd start/running, process 3275 # service vsftpd stop stop: Unknown instance: # service vsftpd restart stop: Unknown instance: vsftpd start/running, process 3315 # sudo service vsftpd restart stop: Unknown instance: vsftpd start/running, process 3358 I couldn't get the vsftp resrated when ever I try the restart the above happens ! How to restart ? Please advice

  • Got it: OCM 11g

    Today I received a mail stating that I successfully completed my OCM 11g practicum ! I am really satisfied with this result considering the work I did for it. Trying to be best in specialisation area on High Availability (RAC, Exadata, DataGuard) is nice, but it is extra nice to also proof I still have more then enough hands on experience to work on the more 'regular' DBA tasks. Practicing the complete DBA curriculum for OCP/OCM is something I recommend everyone to do since this is really helps you to stay on top, hands on !     There are so many events and sessions to attend at JavaOne, it's unfair to ask people to choose just one thing they liked, but here are some favorite moments: I loved meeting many open source contributors and friends I have not met in person before and seeing that projects like e.g. Hudson are alive and kicking and have a great future ahead of them. -Manfred Moser My "The Problem with Women" session. It had LOADS of interactivity from the audience, who really helped to make that session.  I came out if it with a real sense of optimism - we love our jobs, we love what we do, and we should be proud of telling everyone about it to attract different talent into the industry. (Read her blog JavaOne: The Problem With Women - A Technical Approach for details.) -Trish Gee My kudos to Oracle for making the presentation materials quickly available to the public. Some of them were already available during JavaOne. Lots of slide decks are already there, and in some cases you may even find the video recordings too. Go to http://www.oracle.com/javaone and select JavaOne Technical Sessions.  -Yakov Fain I loved that not only was James Gosling present at the Community Keynote (which felt more like the keynotes of old times [big space, big screens, fun and tech]) but he was also found wandering the halls of the Hilton the day prior. Bring back James! Add back the toys section in the Community Keynote. Let the t-shirt tossing begin anew. These are "small" things that really fire up the community. -Andres Almiray Seeing James Gosling at JavaOne was a real shot in the arm for Java.  He needs to be there every year. -Frank Greco +42 on having James and the T-shirt tossing. -Stephan Janssen The session "Integrate Java with Robots, Home Automation, Musical Instruments, and Kinect." Fabiane Nardon explained connecting Jenkins to jHome to a truck horn placed in their sysadmin's bedroom. She dubbed it "extreme feedback."  -Tori Wieldt The User Group Forum [on Sunday] was a success! Congratulations Bruno Souza and John Yeary and everybody that were involved. I believe it really helps to increase community participation! There were lots of interesting talks, and great discussion with JUG leaders and members.     I'm doing a test deploy on a Lab with 3 VMs: TEST-DC: DC / DHCP / DNS / Root CA (Joined to TEST.AD Domain) TEST-CS: OCS Front End (Joined to TEST.AD Domain - IP: 10.0.128.1) TEST-EDGES: OCS Edge Server (Joined to Workgroup: EDGE-WKG - Internal IP: 10.0.128.3, External IPs: 192.168.129.12 - Access Edge Server, 192.168.129.13 - Web Conferencing, 192.168.129.14 - A/V) I can login with the Communicator Client from within computers in the domain (using [email protected]) and even the Automatic Sign-In works as expected. Nevertheless, I cannot login neither from within machines in the domain nor from outside the domain using [email protected].   • Extending the ADF Controller exception handler

    The Oracle ADF controller provides a declarative option for developers to define a view activity, method activity or router activity to handle exceptions in bounded or unbounded task flows. Exception handling however is for exceptions only and not handling all types of Throwable. Furthermore, exceptions that occur during the JSF RENDER RESPONSE phase are not looked at either as it is considered too late in the cycle. For developers to try themselves to handle unhandled exceptions in ADF Controller, it is possible to extend the default exception handling, while still leveraging the declarative configuration. To add your own exception handler: · Create a Java class that extends ExceptionHandler · Create a textfile with the name “oracle.adf.view.rich.context.Exceptionhandler” (without the quotes) and store it in .adf\META-INF\services (you need to create the “services” folder) · In the file, add the absolute name of your custom exception handler class (package name and class name without the “.class” extension) For any exception you don't handle in your custom exception handler, just re-throw it for the default handler to give it a try … import oracle.adf.view.rich.context.ExceptionHandler; public class MyCustomExceptionHandler extends ExceptionHandler { public MyCustomExceptionHandler() {      super(); } public void handleException(FacesContext facesContext,                              Throwable throwable, PhaseId phaseId)                              throws Throwable {    String error_message;    error_message = throwable.getMessage();    //check error message and handle it if you can    if( … ){          //handle exception        …    }    else{       //delegate to the default ADFc exception handler        throw throwable;}    } } Note however, that it is recommended to first try and handle exceptions with the ADF Controller default exception handling mechanism. In the past, I've seen attempts on OTN to handle regular application use cases with custom exception handlers for where there was no need to override the exception handler. So don't go for this solution to quickly and always think of alternative solutions. Sometimes a try-catch-final block does it better than sophisticated web exception handling.
