Using a database with C#

I have been trying to do something that I think would be really easy but have never used C# before and am having trouble with the details. I simple want to use a sql database with Visual C# Express 2008. For testing purposes I have a datagrid on my form that can reflect changes to the db. If i use this: codesTableAdapter.Fill(dataSet1.codes); The datagrid(dataset) will fill with the info from the sql database. If i then do something like this: codesTableAdapter.InsertQuery(txtCode.Text,txtName.Text); codesTableAdapter.Fill(dataSet1.codes); codesTableAdapter.Update(dataSet1); dataSet1.AcceptChanges(); The datagrid reflects the changes but if close the program and go to the database the changes are not there. When I open the program again the changes are not there. I have a feeling this isn't too clear as my understanding here is very low so please let me know what other info is needed. Thanks

Multiple &(AND) fails in query

here is my query $sql = 'SELECT * FROM Orders INNER JOIN [Order Details] ON Orders.OrderNumber = [Order Details].OrderNumber WHERE Orders.CartID =2 AND [Order Details].Option10 Is Null AND [Order Details].Status="Shipped"'; this queries when entered in MS_Access sql view, returns the correct results, but when I copy and paste the same query in my php script, it fails and gives the error Too few parameters, expected 1... although data is there, query is working in access... Please note if I omitted on AND condition, it works eg if I removed shipped conidtion or is null condition, it works then too.. any hint? whats wrong with it?? any help?thanks

Answers to “What source control system do you use?” (and some winners)

About a month ago I posed a question here on my blog SQL Server devs–what source control system do you use, if any? (answer and maybe win free stuff) in which I asked SQL Server developers to answer the following questions: Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? Why did you make those particular software choices? Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? I had some really great responses (I highly recommend going and reading them). I promised that the five best, most thought-provoking, responses (as determined by me) would win one of five pairs of licenses for Red Gate SQL Source Control and Red Gate SQL Connect; here are the five that I chose (note that if you responded but did not leave a means of getting in touch then you weren’t considered for one of the prizes – sorry): In general, I don't think the management overhead and licensing cost associated with TFS is worthwhile if all you're doing is using source control. To get value from TFS, at a minimum you need to be using team build, and possibly other stuff as well, such as the sharepoint integration. If that's all you need, then svn with Tortoise would be my first choice. If you want to add build automation later, you can do this with cruisecontrol (is it still called that?), JetBrains, etc. For a long time I thought that Redgate's claims about "bridging the SSMS-VS divide" were a load of hot air, since in my experience anyone who knew what they were doing was using Visual Studio, in particular SSDT and its predecessors. However, on a recent client I was putting in source control for the first time, and I discovered that the "divide" really does exist. That client has ended up using svn with Redgate SQL Source Control, with no build automation, but with scope to add it in the future. Gavin Campbell I think putting the DB under source control is a great idea. I have issues with the earlier versions of SQL Source Control in that it provides little help in versioning the DB. I think the latest version merges SQL Compare and SQL Source Control together. Which is how it should have been all along. Sure I have the DB scripts in SVN, but I can't automate DB builds and changes without more tools. Frankly I'm surprised databases don't have some sort of versioning built into them. Nick Portelli Source control has been immensely useful and saved me from a lot of rework on more than one occasion. I have learned that you have to be extremely careful checking in data. Our system is internal only so during the system production run once a week, if there is a problem that I can fix easily(for example, a control table points to a file in the wrong environment), I'll do it directly in production so the run can continue as soon as possible since we have a specified time window. We do full test runs to minimize this but it has come up once or twice. We use Red-Gate source control to "push" from the test environment to the production environment. There have been a couple of occasions where the test environment with the wrong setting was pushed back over the production environment because the change was made only in production. Gotta keep an eye on that. Alan Dykes Goodness is it manual. And can be extremely painful at times. Not only are we running thin, we are constrained on the tools we can get ($$ must mean free). Certainly no excuse, and a great opportunity to improve my skills by learning new things. But... Getting buy in a on a proven process or methodology is hard, takes time, and diverts us from development. If SQL Source Control is easy to use and proven oh boy could you get some serious fans around here! Seriously though, as the "accidental dba" of this shop any new ideas / easy to implement tools can make a world of difference in productivity and most importantly accuracy. Append/Add Child Div (jQuery) for Messaging System

So, I'm having difficulty trying to append/add a child div to the parent div, and thought someone out here may know the best way for me to go about this. I have attached my code (without PHP right now, just hard coding text and stuff). But here is what I am trying to do: When a message is posted, you hit the "Reply Button" and a new div will appear underneath containing the reply form. Right now, here are the issues I know about and can't get around: The DIV is a class, so when I use jQuery to try to target the DIV it targets everything since it's no unique. The Reply Button is also a class, so it's not unique. Validating textboxes and checkboxes then add the values of those checkboxes

I am very new to Javascript. I am running to a problem and don't know how to solve it. Could you please help? Basically, I want to create some textboxes and checkboxes in a form. Then I have to validate those fields, and add the values of the checkboxes if they are selected. One of the textboxes asking for how many semesters attended, and 3 checkboxes with value of 100, 1000, and 750. Whichever checkbox is selected, it should multiply its value to the number of semesters attended. For example if the first two checkboxes are selected then totalCost = (100+1000)* semester. Currently I have a DataModel object which contains my linq to sql classes(a dmbl file). Currently I use a partial class to validate the incoming input. I'm trying to create an SSIS 2008 Data Source View that reads from an Ingres database via the ODBC driver for Ingres. I've downloaded the Ingres 10 Community Edition to get the ODBC driver, installed it, set up the data access server and a DSN on the server running SSIS. If I connect to the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine on the server running SSIS, I can retrieve data from Ingres over the ODBC DSN by running the following command: SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET( 'MSDASQL' , 'DSN=IngresODBC;UID=testuser;PWD=testpass' , 'SELECT * FROM iitables') So I am quite sure that the ODBC setup is correct. If I try the same query with SQL Server style bracketed identifier quotes, I get an error, as Ingres doesn't support this syntax. SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET( 'MSDASQL' , 'DSN=IngresODBC;UID=testuser;PWD=testpass' , 'SELECT * FROM [iitables]') The error is "[Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 1, Unexpected character '['.". What I am finding is that I get the same error when I try to add tables from Ingres to an SSIS Data Source View. The initial step of selecting the ODBC Provider works fine, and I am shown a list of tables / views to add. I then select any table, and try to add it to the view, and get "ERROR [5000A] [Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 3, Unexpected character '['.". Following Ed Harper's suggestion of creating a named query also seems to be stymied. If I put into my named query the following text: SELECT * FROM "iitables" I still get an error: "ERROR [5000A] [Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 2, Unexpected character '['". According to the error, the query text passed by SSIS to ODBC was: SELECT [iitables].* FROM ( SELECT * FROM "iitables" ) AS [iitables] It seems that SSIS assumes that bracket quote characters are acceptable, when they aren't. How can I persuade it not to use them? Double quotes are acceptable.

I have three tables, the first two fairly standard: 1) PRODUCTS table: pid pname, etc 2) CART table: cart_id cart_pid cart_orderid etc The third is designed to let people save products they buy and keep notes on them. 3) MYPRODUCTS table: myprod_id myprod_pid PRODUCTS.prod_id = CART.cart_prodid = MYPRODUCTS.myprod_pid When a user orders, they are presented with a list of products on their order, and can optionally add that product to myproducts. I am getting the info necessary for them to do this, with a query something like this for each order: SELECT cart.pid, products.pname, products.pid FROM products, cart WHERE products.pid = cart_prodid AND cart_orderid=orderid This is fine the first time they order. However, if they subsequently reorder a product which they have already added to myproducts, then it should NOT be possible for them to add it to myproducts again - basically instead of 'Add to MyProducts' they need to see 'View in MyProducts'. I am thinking I can separate the products using two queries: Products never added to MyProducts By somehow identifying whether the user has the product in MyProducts already, and if so excluding it from the query above. Products already in MyProducts By reversing the process above. I need some pointers on how to do this though.

Search book by title, and author

I got a table with columns: author firstname, author lastname, and booktitle Multiple users are inserting in the database, through an import, and I'd like to avoid duplicates. So I'm trying to do something like this: I have a record in the db: First Name: "Isaac" Last Name: "Assimov" Title: "I, Robot" If the user tries to add it again, it would be basically a non-split-text (would not be split up into author firstname, author lastname, and booktitle) So it would basically look like this: "Isaac Asimov - I Robot" or "Asimov, Isaac - I Robot" or "I Robot by Isaac Asimov" You see where I am getting at? (I cannot force the user to split up all the books into into author firstname, author lastname, and booktitle, and I don't even like the idea to force the user, because it's not too user-friendly) What is the best way (in SQL) to compare all this possible bookdata scenarios to what I have in the database, not to add the same book twice. I was thinking about a possibility of suggesting the user: "is THIS the book you are trying to add?" (imagine a list instead of the THIS word, just like on stackoverflow - ask question - Related Questions. I was thinking about soundex and maybe even the like operators, but so far i didn't get the results i was hoping.

Assume i have a custom Windows application written in C#. This application has only the following functionalists, add, edit, delete and view. For example, a user can add a sale, change sales record, delete a sale record or view the whole sales record. I need to add some reporting functionalists e.g. i want a user to print the sales of a certain customer from 2008 to 2009 into pdf, what all products a certain customer has purchased from us and so on. I will only include the basic common report requests that are usually needed in the office. Any other kind of reports that are requested inconsistently, i would do it manually from my side at the back end and send the results manually to the requester. What i would do is: If a user wants more info of a certain customer, a special window box appears for that customer. This window box will have different controls that allows user to request more info such as, print customer purchases from ..... to ..... (user chooses the dates) and user will view results in pdf or so. Of course, at the back scene i will write an appropriate SQL Query with parameters that meets a certain function. Is this how it should be done? I have heard about SQL Reporting, i don't know anything about it yet. I will check it out. Anyhow, your suggestions won't harm. I'm still a student, so i don't have practical experience yet. I hope my question is clear enough. Thank you.

Hi, Lets say I am analyzing how high school sports records affect school attendance. So I have a table in which each row corresponds to a high school basketball game. Each game has an away team id and a home team id (FK to another "team table") and a home score and an away score and a date. I am writing a query that matches attendance with this seasons basketball games. My sample output will be (#_students_missed_class, day_of_game, home_team, away_team, home_team_wins_this_season, away_team_wins_this_season) I now want to add how each team did the previous season to my analysis. Well, I have their previous season stored in the game table but i should be able to accomplish that with a subselect. So in my main select statement I add the subselect: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM game_table WHERE game_table.date BETWEEN 'start of previous season' AND 'end of previous season' AND ( (game_table.home_team = team_table.id AND game_table.home_score > game_table.away_score) OR (game_table.away_team = team_table.id AND game_table.away_score > game_table.home_score)) In this case team-table.id refers to the id of the home_team so I now have all their wins calculated from the previous year. This method of calculation is neither time nor resource intensive. The Explain SQL shows that I have ALL in the Type field and I am not using a Key and the query times out. I'm not sure how I can accomplish a more efficient query with a subselect. It seems proposterously inefficient to have to write 4 of these queries (for home wins, home losses, away wins, away losses). I am sure this could be more lucid. I'll absolutely add color tomorrow if anyone has questions

I have a Profile model/controller in my cake app as well as an index.ctp view in /views/profiles. Now, when I go to add a column to my table that is already filled with data, and then add the corresponding code to the view to pick up this column's data, it just gives me an empty result. After my publish in VS2010 the entire website loads and pulls data from the database perfectly. I can even create new users through the site with the correct key code, given out to who needs access. Everything else is pulled using the standard ApplicationServices connection. Do you see anything wrong with my connectionstring? I'm at a complete loss here. The site works perfectly on my friends server and not on mine... Could it be a provider issue? And if I go to iis 7's manager console, and click .net users I get a pop up message saying the custom provider isn't a trusted provider do I want to allow it to run at a higher trust level. I'm at the point where I think its either my string or this trusted provider error... but I have no clue how to add to the trusted provider list... Thank you in advance!!!

Even though there are no errors returned, my current connection string doesn't display contents of my selected AdventureWorks stored procedure. Populate JOIN into a list in one database query

I am trying to get the records from the 'many' table of a one-to-many relationship and add them as a list to the relevant record from the 'one' table. I am also trying to do this in a single database request. Code derived from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1580199/linq-to-sql-populate-join-result-into-a-list almost achieves the intended result, but makes one database request per entry in the 'one' table which is unacceptable. That failing code is here: var res = from variable in _dc.GetTable<VARIABLE>() select new { x = variable, y = variable.VARIABLE_VALUEs }; However if I do a similar query but loop through all the results, then only a single database request is made. This code achieves all goals: var res = from variable in _dc.GetTable<VARIABLE>() select variable; List<GDO.Variable> output = new List<GDO.Variable>(); foreach (var v2 in res) { List<GDO.VariableValue> values = new List<GDO.VariableValue>(); foreach (var vv in v2.VARIABLE_VALUEs) { values.Add(VariableValue.EntityToGDO(vv)); } output.Add(EntityToGDO(v2)); output[output.Count - 1].VariableValues = values; } However the latter code is ugly as hell, and it really feels like something that should be do-able in a single linq query. So, how can this be done in a single linq query that makes only a single database query? I've got a little time-tracking web app (implemented in Rails 3.2.8 & MySQL). The app has several users who add their time to specific tasks, on a given date. The system is set up so a user can only have 1 time entry (i.e. row) per task per date. I.e. if you add time twice on the same task and date, it'll add time to the existing row, rather than create a new one. Now I'm looking to merge 2 tasks. In the simplest terms, merging task ID 2 into task ID 1 would take this time | user_id | task_id | date ------+----------+----------+----------- 10 | 1 | 1 | 2012-10-29 15 | 2 | 1 | 2012-10-29 10 | 1 | 2 | 2012-10-29 5 | 3 | 2 | 2012-10-29 and change it into this time | user_id | task_id | date ------+----------+----------+----------- 20 | 1 | 1 | 2012-10-29 <-- time values merged (summed) 15 | 2 | 1 | 2012-10-29 <-- no change 5 | 3 | 1 | 2012-10-29 <-- task_id changed (no merging necessary) I.e. merge by summing the time values, where the given user_id/date/task combo would conflict. I figure I can use a unique constraint to do a ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE ... if I do an insert for every task_id=2 entry. But that seems pretty inelegant. I've also tried to figure a way to first update all the rows in task 1 with the summed-up times, but I can't quite figure that one out. Any ideas?
