Instead of returning all the topics (where their board's topic_board_link is n), it only returns one topic.

  • Improving performance for WRITE operation on Oracle DB in Java

    I've a typical scenario & need to understand best possible way to handle this, so here it goes - I'm developing a solution that will retrieve data from a remote SOAP based web service & will then push this data to an Oracle database on network. Also, this will be a scheduled task that will execute every 15 minutes. I've event queues on remote service that contains the INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE operations that have been done since last retrieval, & once I retrieve the events for last 15 minutes, it again add events for next retrieval. Now, its just pushing data to Oracle so all my interactions are INSERT & UPDATE statements. There are around 60 tables on Oracle with some of them having 100+ columns. Moreover, for every 15 minutes cycle there would be around 60-70 Inserts, 100+ Updates & 10-20 Deletes. This will be an executable jar file that will terminate after operation & will again start on next 15 minutes cycle. So, I need to understand how should I handle WRITE operations (best practices) to improve performance for this application as whole ? Current Test Code (on every cycle) - Connects to remote service to get events. Creates a connection with DB (single connection object). Identifies the type of operation (INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE) & table on which it is done. After above, calls the respective method based on type of operation & table. Uses Preparedstatement with positional parameters, & retrieves each column value from remote service & assigns that to statement parameters. Commits the statement & returns to get event class to process next event. Above is repeated till all the retrieved events are processed after which program closes & then starts on next cycle & everything repeats again. Thanks for help !

  • bulk insert from Java into Oracle

    I need to insert many small rows rapidly into Oracle. (5 fields). With MySQL, I break the inserts into groups of 100, then use one insert statement for every group of 100 inserts. But with Oracle, user feedback is that the mass inserts (anywhere from 1000-30000) are too slow. Is there a similar trick I can use to speed up the programmatic inserts from Java into Oracle?

I have tried converting the column to XML using CONVERT but it gives the error: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'CONVERT'.   • SSRS Export to Excel not working through VPN (Juniper SA4000)

    We have a SharePoint (MOSS 2007 on Win2003 R2) with SSRS reports (from SQL 2005) embedded in it. When we connect to the SharePoint portal through our VPN (firewall is Juniper SA4000) and using Internet Explorer (6, 7, and 8) and try to export any SSRS report under Excel, we get an error message: Internet Explorer cannot download . Internet Explorer was not able to open the internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. When not using the VPN (LAN from the office), everything (exporting under Excel) works fine. When using Firefox through the VPN, it works fine. When exporting to any other format (pdf or text or whatever), everything is fine under both IE and FF. Our firewall people suspect something in SSRS/MOSS/Office. Our MOSS consultants suspect something in the firewall Juniper SA4000.     Ten years ago, if you asked a CIO, “how mobile is your enterprise?”. The answer would be, “100%, we give Blackberry to all our employees.”Few things have changed since then: 1.    Smartphone form-factors have matured, especially after the launch of iPhone. 2.    Rapid growth of productivity applications and services that enable creation and consumption of digital content 3.    Pervasive mobile data connectivityThere are two threads emerging from the change. Users are rapidly mingling their personas of an individual as well as an employee. In the first second, posting a picture of a fancy dinner on Facebook, to creating an expense report for the same meal on the mobile device. Irrespective of the dual persona, a user’s personal and corporate lives intermingle freely on a single hardware and more often than not, it’s an employees personal smartphone being used for everything. A BYOD program enables IT to “control” an employee owned device, while enabling productivity. More often than not the objective of BYOD programs are financial; instead of the organization, an employee pays for it.  More than a fancy device, BYOD initiatives have become sort of fashion statement, of corporate productivity, of letting employees be in-charge and a show of corporate empathy to not force an archaic form-factor in a world of new device launches every month. BYOD is no longer a means of effectively moving expense dollars and support costs. It does not matter who owns the device, it has to be protected.  BYOD brings an architectural shift.  BYOD is an architecture, which assumes that every device is vulnerable, not just what your employees have brought but what organizations have purchased for their employees. It's an architecture, which forces us to rethink how to provide productivity without comprising security.Why assume that every device is vulnerable? Mobile operating systems are rapidly evolving with leading upgrade announcement every other month. It is impossible for IT to catch-up. More than that, user’s are savvier than earlier.  While IT could install locks at the doors to prevent intruders, it may degrade productivity—which incentivizes user’s to bypass restrictions. A rapidly evolving mobile ecosystem have moving parts which are vulnerable. Hence, creating a mobile security platform, which uses the fundamental blocks of BYOD architecture such as identity defragmentation, IT control and data isolation, ensures that the sprawl of corporate data is contained. In the next post, we’ll dig deeper into the BYOD architecture.   • Getting SQL table row counts via sysindexes vs. sys.indexes

    Among the many useful SQL snippets I regularly use is this little bit that will return row counts in a table: SELECT so.name as TableName, MAX(si.rows) as [RowCount] FROM sysobjects so JOIN sysindexes si ON si.id = OBJECT_ID(so.name) WHERE so.xtype = 'U' GROUP BY so.name ORDER BY [RowCount] DESC This is handy to find tables that have grown wildly, zero-row tables that could (possibly) be dropped, or other clues into the data. Right off the bat you may spot some "non-ideal" code - I'm using sysobjects rather than sys.objects. What's the difference? In SQL Server 2005 and later, sysobjects is no longer a table, but a "compatibility view", meant for backward compatibility only. SELECT * from each and you'll see the different data that each returns. Microsoft advises that sysindexes could be removed in a future version of SQL Server, but this has never really been an issue for me since my company is still using SQL 2000. However, there are murmurs that we may actually migrate to 2008 some year, so I might as well go ahead and start using an updated version of this snippet on the servers that can handle it: SELECT so.name as TableName, ddps.row_count as [RowCount] FROM sys.objects so JOIN sys.indexes si ON si.OBJECT_ID = so.OBJECT_ID JOIN sys.dm_db_partition_stats AS ddps ON si.OBJECT_ID = ddps.OBJECT_ID  AND si.index_id = ddps.index_id WHERE si.index_id < 2  AND so.is_ms_shipped = 0 ORDER BY ddps.row_count DESC

  • The emergence of Atlassian's Bamboo (and a free SQL Source Control license offer!)

    The rise in demand for database continuous integration has forced me to skill-up in various new tools and technologies, particularly build servers. We have been using JetBrain's TeamCity here at Red Gate for a couple of years now, having replaced the ageing CruiseControl.NET, so it was a natural choice for us to use this for our database CI demos. Most of our early adopter customers have also transitioned away from CruiseControl, the majority to TeamCity and Microsoft's TeamBuild. However, more recently, for reasons we've yet to fully comprehend, we've observed a significant surge in the number of evaluators for Atlassian's Bamboo. I installed this a couple of weeks back to satisfy myself that it works seamlessly with Red Gate tools. As you would expect Bamboo's UI has the same clean feel found in any Atlassian tool (we use JIRA extensively here at Red Gate). In the coming weeks I will post a short step-by-step guide to setting up SQL Server continuous integration using the Red Gate command lines. To help us further optimize the integration between these tools I'd be very keen to hear from any Bamboo users who also use Red Gate tools who might be willing to participate in usability tests and other similar research in exchange for Amazon vouchers.   • Oracle Inroduces a New Line of Defense for Databases

    Today at the 2011 RSA Conference, we announced the immediate availability of our new Oracle Database Firewall, the latest addition to a comprehensive portfolio of database security solutions. Oracle Database Firewall is a network-based software solution that monitors database traffic, and can detect and block SQL injection and other attacks from reaching Oracle and non-Oracle databases. According to the 2010 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, SQL injection attacks against databases are responsible for 89% of all breached data. SQL injection attacks are a technique for controlling responses from the database server through applications. This attack exploits the inherent trust between application layer and the back-end database. Previously the only way organizations had to safeguard against SQL injection attacks was a complete overhaul of their application code. Obviously a very costly, complex, and often impossible undertaking for most organizations. Enter the new Oracle Database Firewall. It can help prevent SQL injection attacks by establishing a defensive perimeter around your databases. The Oracle Database Firewall uses an innovative SQL grammar analysis to inspect the database traffic against pre-defined policies. Normal expected traffic is allowed to pass (and can be optionally logged to demonstrate regulatory compliance), ensuring no false positives or disruption to your business. SQL statements that are explicitly forbidden or unknown SQL statements can either pass, be logged, alert, block or be substitute with pre-defined SQL statements. Being able to substitute an unknown potentially harmful SQL statement with a harmless statement is especially powerful since it foils an attack while allowing the application to operate normally and preventing DoS attacks.   • Why does apt-get install Skype easily while aptitude complains about MAJOR dependency errors?

    I was trying to install Skype on Ubuntu 13.04, from the Canonical repositories. With apt-get it worked easily, while aptitude had a huge problem with dependencies and proposed a complicated solution. Why is this so?
