• VS 2008 created shortcut doesn't show up in "Send To" menu

  I have a WinForms application built using Visual Studio 2008. I added a Setup Project to the solution to create an installation MSI file. I need the setup project to create a shortcut pointing to the application's executable in the users Send To Menu. This way when someone right clicks on a file, my application will show in the Send To list and be selected. I figured out under the file system settings of the Setup project how to add a shortcut to the Users Send To Menu. The problem is, the shortcut doesn't show in the Send To menu when you right click on a file. If I manually create a shortcut to my executable the application does show in the Send To menu. I have read many suggestions on the web to required registry entries for this to work. There is a VBS file written by Ramesh Srinivasan which inserts them. On every system I have tried this on the registry values already existed, so this is not the problem. It seems more to be with the shortcut Visual Studio (or the msi anyway) is creating.

• Cocoa UI Elements Not Updating

  I have a few Cocoa UI elements with outlet connexions to an object instantiated within an NSView object, which is in turn put there by an NSViewController. These elements, a definite progress bar and a text label, are not updating: the progress bar is dead and empty despite having its value change constantly, the text label does not unhide through [textLabel setHidden:NO], the text label does not change its string. What I know: There's no difference between binding values and setting them in code. Nothing changes either way. I've checked outlet connections. They're all there. I've tried [X displayIfNeeded], where X has been the UI objects themselves, the containing NSView, and the main window. No difference. [progressBar setUsesThreadedAnimation:YES] makes no difference. Interestingly, if I look at progressBar mid-program, _threadedAnimation is still NO. The object holding all these outlets and performing an import operation is in an NSOperationQueue owned by the NSViewController object. Thanks! EDIT: As suggested, I called [self performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(updateProgress:) withObject:[NSNumber numberWithInt:myObject] waitUntilDone:NO]. (I've also tried waitUntilDone:YES.) It's still not updating. The debugger clearly shows updateProgress: taking place in the main thread, so I don't know what's missing.

• Lookup site column not saving/storing metadata for Office 2007 documents?

  I'm having this issue on several server environments. We have a list at the site collection root. There is a site column created as a multi-value lookup on that list's Title field. This site column is used in document libraries in subsites as a required field. When we upload anything but an Office 2007 document, the user is presented with the document metadata fill-in screen (EditForm.aspx?Mode=Upload), the user fills in the appropriate data (including picking a value(s) for this lookup), and clicks "check in" - the document is checked in as expected, with the lookup field's value filled in. With an Office 2007 document, this fails. The user selected values for the lookup field do not ever make it to the server - no errors are thrown, but the field is not saved with the document. We have an event listener on these document libraries, and if we inspect the incoming SPListItem on the event listener method before a single line of our code has run, we see that the value for the lookup field is null. It smells like a SharePoint bug to me - but before I go calling Microsoft, has anyone seen this & worked around it? Edit: the only entry I see in the SP trace logs relating to the problem: CMS/Publishing/8ztg/Medium/Got List Item Version, but item was null

• Combining aggregate functions in an (ANSI) SQL statement

  I have aggregate functions foo(), foobar(), fredstats(), barneystats() I want to create a domain specific query language (DSQL) above my DB, to facilitate using using a domain language to query the DB. The 'language' comprises of boolean expressions (or more specifically SQL like criteria) which I then 'translate' back into pure (ANSI) SQL and send to the underlying Db. • JS: capture a static snapshot of an object at a point in time with a method

  I have a JS object I use to store DOM info for easy reference in an elaborate GUI. It starts like this: var dom = { m:{ old:{}, page:{x:0,y:0}, view:{x:0,y:0}, update:function(){ this.old = this; this.page.x = $(window).width(); this.page.y = $(window).height(); this.view.x = $(document).width(); this.view.y = window.innerHeight || $(window).height(); } I call the function on window resize: $(window).resize(function(){dom.m.update()}); The problem is with dom.m.old. I would have thought that by calling it in the dom.m.update() method before the new values for the other properties are assigned, at any point in time dom.m.old would contain a snapshot of the dom.m object as of the last update – but instead, it's always identical to dom.m. I've just got a pointless recursion method. Why isn't this working? How can I get a static snapshot of the object that won't update without being specifically told to? Comments explaining how I shouldn't even want to be doing anything remotely like this in the first place are very welcome :)

In the the hint window that follows, there is the item "say()". This is because the javadoc says say_something returns a Dummy and NetBeans parsed Dummy class to know that it has a method called "say()". So far so good. My problem is with arrays. Example code follows: /** * Builds array of 2 dummy classes and returns it. * @return Array The dummy class. (*) */ function say_something2(){ return array(new Dummy(),new Dummy()); } $s=say_something2(); If I try the auto-complete thing again but with "$s[0]-" instead, I don't get the methods fro Dummy class. This is because in the JavaDoc I only said that it is an array, but not the values' type. So the question would be, is there any JavaDoc syntax, cheat, whatever which allows me to tell JavaDoc what type of variables to expect in an array?

  What is the fastest way to insert 237 million records into a table that has rules (for distributing the data across 84 child tables)? First I tried inserts. No go. Then I tried inserts with BEGIN/COMMIT. Not nearly fast enough. Next, I tried COPY FROM, but then noticed the documentation states that the rules are ignored. (And it was having difficulties with the column order and date format -- it said that '1984-07-1' was not a valid integer; true, but a bit unexpected.) • django - variable declared in base project does not appear in app

  I have a variable called STATIC_URL, declared in settings.py in my base project: STATIC_URL = '/site_media/static/' This is used, for example, in my site_base.html, which links to CSS files as follows: <link rel="stylesheet" href="{{ STATIC_URL }}css/site_tabs.css" /> I have a bunch of templates related to different apps which extend site_base.html, and when I look at them in my browser the CSS is linked correctly as <link rel="stylesheet" href="/site_media/static/css/site_tabs.css" /> (These came with a default pinax distribution.) I created a new app called 'courses' which lives in the ...../apps/courses folder. I have a view for one of the pages in courses called courseinstance.html which extends site_base.html just like the other ones. However, when this one renders in my browser it comes out as <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/site_tabs.css" /> as if STATIC_URL were equal to "" for this app. Do I have to make some sort of declaration to get my app to take on the same variable values as the project? I don't have a settings.py file for the app. by the way, the app is listed in my list of INSTALLED_APPS and it gets served up fine, just without the link to the CSS file (so the page looks funny). • Database relationships using phpmyAdmin (composite keys)

  Hi, I hope this question is not me being dense. I am using phpmyAdmin to create a database. I have the following four tables. Don't worry about that fact place and price are optional they just are. Person (Mandatory) Item (Mandatory) Place (Optional) Price (Optional) Item is the main table. It will always have person linked. * I know you do joins in mysql for the tables. If I want to link the tables together I could use composite keys (using the ids from each table), however is this the most correct way to link the tables? It also means item will have 5 ids including its own. This all cause null values (apparently a big no no, which I can understand) because if place and price are optional and are not used on one entry to the items table I will have a null value there. Please help! Thanks in advance. I hope this makes sense.

I got a couple of thoughts and questions regarding assembly combined with c# or any other .net languages for that matter. First of all I want to be able to create a library that has the following function HelloWorld that takes this parameter: Name In C# the method signature would looke like this: void HelloWorld(string name) and it would print out something like Hello World from name I've searched around a bit but can't find that much good and clean material for this to get me started. I know some basic assembly from before mostly gasthough. So any pointers in the right direction is very much apprechiated. To sum it up Create a function in ASM ( NASM ) that takes one or more parameters Compile and create a library of the above functionality Include the library in any .net language Call the included library function Bonus features How does one handle returned values? Is it possible to write the ASM-method inline? When creating libraries in assembly or c, you do follow a certain "pre defined" way, the c calling convetion, correct?

• Set the selected item for a combobox in a datagrid

  I am using a datagrid which has many combobox fields in it, when I click the datagrid combobox the selected item or highlighted value is the last item in the list, but I would like it to highlight the first(top) item in the list. I know for just a combobox, all I need to do is change the combobox.selecteditem or combobox.selectedindex, but I'm not sure what to do in this case. I have binded the combobox to a table in the database and used a datatable to store the combobox values and then I add a row to the datatable, I think the reason the last item in the combobox is highlighted is because I added a row to the datatable. • ASP.net drop down dynamically styling and then remembering the styles on aborted submit

  So, I've got an ASP drop down list (this is .net 2.0). I'm binding it with data. Basically, when the page loads and it's not a post back we'll fetch record data, bind all the drop downs, and set them to their appropriate values (strictly speaking we: initialize page with basic set of data from DB, bind drop downs from DB, fetch actual record data from DB, set drown downs to appropriate settings at this time). What I want to do is selectively style the list options. So the database returns 3 items: ID, Text, and a flag indicating whether I the record is "active" (and I'll style appropriately). It's easy enough to do and I've done it. My problem is what happens when a form submission is halted. We have slightly extended the Page class and created an AddError() method, which will create a list of errors from failed business rule checks and then display them in a ValidationSummary. It works something like this, in the submit button's click event: CheckBizRules(); if(Page.IsValid) { SaveData(); } If any business rule check fails, the Page will not be valid. The problem is, when the page re-renders (viewsate is enabled, but no data is rebound) my beautiful conditional styling is now sadly gone, off to live in the land of the missing socks. I need to preserve it. I was hoping to avoid another DB call here (e.g. getting the list data back from the DB again if the page isn't valid, just for purposes of re-styling the list). But it's not the end of the world if that's my course of action. I was hoping someone might have an alternative suggestion. I couldn't think of how to phrase this question better, if anyone has any suggestions or needs clarification don't hesitate to get it, by force if need be. ;)

  Hi, I was wondering if there is an existing control that I could use to achieve what I am trying. Basically, I have a html table that I display my header information. It looks something like this: <table class="tableEdit"> <tr> <th>Job ID</th><td>10</td> <th>Client</th><td>Tom</td> </tr> <tr> <th>Comments</th><td>Comments are here</td> </tr> </table> I am wondering if there is an existing control that I can use as a container. • Generating lognormally distributed random number from mean, coeff of variation

  Most functions for generating lognormally distributed random numbers take the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution as parameters. My problem is that I only know the mean and the coefficient of variation of the lognormal distribution. It is reasonably straight forward to derive the parameters I need for the standard functions from what I have: If mu and sigma are the mean and standard deviation of the associated normal distribution, we know that coeffOfVar^2 = variance / mean^2 = (exp(sigma^2) - 1) * exp(2*mu + sigma^2) / exp(mu + sigma^2/2)^2 = exp(sigma^2) - 1 We can rearrange this to sigma = sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) We also know that mean = exp(mu + sigma^2/2) This rearranges to mu = log(mean) - sigma^2/2 Here's my R implementation rlnorm0 <- function(mean, coeffOfVar, n = 1e6) { sigma <- sqrt(log(coeffOfVar^2 + 1)) mu <- log(mean) - sigma^2 / 2 rlnorm(n, mu, sigma) } It works okay for small coefficients of variation r1 <- rlnorm0(2, 0.5) mean(r1) # 2.000095 sd(r1) / mean(r1) # 0.4998437 But not for larger values r2 <- rlnorm0(2, 50) mean(r2) # 2.048509 sd(r2) / mean(r2) # 68.55871 To check that it wasn't an R-specific issue, I reimplemented it in MATLAB. The question is, why is this happening? Is it just that the standard deviation is not robust when the variation is that wide? Or have a screwed up somewhere?

• iPhone/iPad : Check for invalid characters in a textbox made for Integers only

  I noticed that the iPhone OS is pretty good about picking out Integer values when asked to. Specifically, if you use NSString *stringName = @"6("; int number = [stringName intValue]; the iPhone OS will pick out the 6 and turn the variable number into 6. However, in more complex mistypes, this also makes the int variable 6: NSString *stringName = @"6(5"; int number = [stringName intValue]; The iPhone OS misses the other digit, when what could have possibly been the user trying to enter the number 65, the OS only gets the number 6 out of it. I need a solution to check a string for invalid characters and return NO if there is anything other than an unsigned integer in a textbox. This is for iPad, and currently there is no numeric keyboard like the iPhone has, and I'm instead limited to the standard 123 keyboard. I was thinking that I need to use NSRange and somehow loop through the entire string in the textbox, and checking to see if the current character in the iteration is a number. I'm lost as far as that goes. I can think of testing it against zero, but zero is a valid integer. Can anyone help?

• What do these C# auto-generated table adapter commands do? e.g. UPDATE/INSERT followed by a SELECT

  I'm working with a legacy application which I'm trying to change so that it can work with SQL CE, whilst it was originally written against SQL Server. The problem I am getting now is that when I try to do dataAdapter.Update, SQL CE complains that it is not expecting the SELECT keyword in the command text. I believe this is because SQL CE does not support batch SELECT statements. The auto-generated table adapter command looks like this... this._adapter.InsertCommand.CommandText = @"INSERT INTO [Table] ([Field1], [Field2]) VALUES (@Value1, @Value2); SELECT Field1, Field2 FROM Table WHERE (Field1 = @Value1)"; What is it doing? It looks like it is inserting new records from the datatable into the database, and then reading that record back from the database into the datatable? What's the point of that? Can I just go through the code and remove all these SELECT statements? Or is there an easier way to solve my problem of wanting to use these data adapters with SQL CE? I cannot regenerate these table adapters, as the people who knew how to have long since left.

• How can I work around WinXP using ports 1025-5000 as ephemeral?

  If you create a TCP client socket with port 0 instead of a non-zero port, then the operating system chooses any free ephemeral port for you. Most OSes choose ephemeral ports from the IANA dynamic port range of 49152-65535. However in Windows Server 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft used ports 1025-5000 as the ephemeral range, according to their bind() documentation. I run multiple Java services on the same hardware. On rare occasions, this range collides with well-known ports that I use for other services (e.g. port 4160 for Jini discovery). While rare, this has caused real problems. Is there any easy way to tell Windows or Java to use a different port range for client sockets? Microsoft's docs indicate that I can change the high end of that range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. Update: I've made some progress on this. It looks like Microsoft has a concept of reserved ports that are exceptions to the ephemeral port range. There's a registry setting that lets you change this permanently and apparently there must be an API to do the same thing because there's a data structure that holds high/low values for reserved port ranges, but I can't find the actual function call anywhere... The registry solution may work, but now I'm fixated on this API.
