• Apache2 memory usage when uploading large files

  Hi, I am running apache2.2.12 along with PHP 5.2.10. PHP is configured to run as a separate process through fcgid. The problem is that when users upload a file, size of the apache process swells by almost the same amount. So if somebody tries to upload a 200 MB file, one of the child process swells to current size+200 MB. If 2 users simultaneously start uploading, my server crashes. Now it is the virtual memory size which is increasing but since I am on a OpenVZ based VPS, that is what counts. My questions are: Is it the normal Apache behavior or can I do something to fix this? If not, is there a more memory efficient way of handling big file uploads. Going by the current behavior, I will need 1 GB of free RAM for every apache child accepting a upload. Thanks! Abhaya -

• SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflow Email Link To Item

  In this post I’ll walk you through the process of sending an email that contains a link to the current item from a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow.  This is a process that has been published on many other forums and blogs, but many that I have seen are more complex than seems necessary. Problem     A common request from SharePoint users is to get an email which contains a link to review/approve/edit the workflow item.  SharePoint list items contain an automatic property for Url Path, but unfortunately that Url is not properly formatted to retrieve the item if you include it directly on the message body.  I tried a few solutions suggested from other blogs or forums that took a substring of the Url Path property, concatenated the display form view Url, and mixed in some other strings.  While I was able to get this working in some scenarios I still had issues in general. Solution     My solution involved adding a hyperlink to the message body.  This ended up being far easier than I had expected and fairly intuitive once I found the correct property to use.  Follow these steps to see what I did.     First add a “Send an Email” action to your workflow.  Edit the action to pull up the email configuration dialog.  Click the “Add hyperlink” button seen below. When prompted for the address of the link click the fx button to perform a lookup.  Choose Workflow Context from the “data source” dropdown.  Choose Current Item URL from the “field from source” dropdown.  Click OK. Your Edit Hyperlink dialog should now look something like this. The end result will be a hyperlink added to your email pointing to the current workflow item.  Note: this link points to the non-modal dialog display form (display form similar to what you had in 2007). Conclusion     In this post I walked you through the steps to create a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow with an email that contains a link to the current item.  While there are many other options for accomplishing this out on the web I found this to be a more concise process and easy to understand.  Hopefully you found this helpful as well.  Feel free to leave any comments or feedback if you’ve found other ways that were helpful to you.         -Frog Out

• How to get Windows Server 2008 VM to use multiple cores

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors.   hey guys, I created a word file with office 2007 and exported it via jaws pdf. Now I want some bookmarks or any kind of "linking-action" that makes it easier to navigate through the document. My PDF viewer doesnt allow to create bookmarks in the free version so I guess I need to handle this via word! maybe using a table of content? anything that is recognized by pdf! thanks in advance edit: I realised it with using a table of centent.it works fine but that wasnt the solution if been looking for.I like to have some bookmarks but my pdf creator doesnt take over the one I created in word. need to figure out how this could works

• Search inside Xournal files (.xoj)

  I'm a big fan of Evernote, I use it regularly. However, it has a 60MB storage limit (although text files are not going to occupy much space, but the limitation concern still remains). Today, I installed Xournal, which has great features like annotating, nice background, free hand shapes and notes, save in PDF format, and many more. But the big problem is that as far as I've noticd, there is no intrinsic feature for seach inside the notes (created using Xournal with .xoj suffix). I used Catfish File Search application (which creates bash commands for full text search), but it couldn't help as well. Is there anyway to search inside a .xoj file at all? If so, it could be a suitable alternative to evernote, if you put your .xoj files on a cloud (which certainly offers you much more storage space than 60MB). If not, is there any other convenient app similar to Evernote, but with higher storage limit or without a limit? Somebody suggested Zim desktop wiki app, which looks great, but I'm nut sure if I could copy and paste everything there (a mixture of photos and tables and text with various formats and highlights), like what I do with Evernote. And a very useful tool I use is Evernote Web Clipper (browser extension). Of course, having a desktop client like Everpad is a plus, but not the absolute need. PS: I use pocket, so please do suggest that (it only preserve links (which might change over time) not the actual text). I also use google drive or docs, I don't like that for this purpose niether, it's too slow, doesn't have a browser extension and a desktop client. Thank you so much in advance.

• How can I convince my boss to invest into the developer environment?

  Our boss said that developers should have fewer mistakes so the company would have money for displays, servers etc. An always mentioned example is a late firing of an underperforming colleague whose salary would have covered some of these expenses. On the other hand it happened a few times that it took a few days to free up some disk space on our servers since we can't get any more disk. The cost of mandays was definitely higher than the cost of a new HDD. Another example is that we use 14-15" notebooks for development and most of the developers get external displays after they spent one year at the company. The price of a 22-24" display is just a small fraction of a developers annual salary. Devs say that they like the company because of other reasons (high quality code, interesting projects etc.) but this kind of issues not just simply time-consuming but also demotivate them. In the point of view of the developers it seems that the boss always can find an issue in the past which they could have been done better so it's pointless to work better to get for a second display/HDD/whatever. How can I convince my boss to invest more into development environment? Is it possible to break this endless loop?

• Is there a usable HTML web gallery template for Lightroom 2?

  The built-in HTML gallery unfortunately generates invalid HTML markup so its looks are likely more coincidence than proper design. That aside its JavaScript usage prevents using the middle mouse button to open an image in a new tab. A look at the few free HTML gallery templates out there shows me that there seems to be little interest in building an actual HTML gallery which doesn't use JavaScript. Most of them are using JS to build fancy animations or in-page popup boxes containing the image. This may be nice for some people but at least one person who looks at my images is on dial-up and quickly opening all images in individual tabs to let them load and then close the connection is very nice to have there. Anyone seen such a gallery template; i. e. simple, plain HTML without JS? My HTML/CSS skills aren't that good that I can develop such a thing on my own, unfortunately.

• Can't find a Windows Explorer alternative that has FULL-TREE View

  I cannot find a Windows Explorer alternative that has full-tree view functionality like Path Finder on the Mac This is the type of view I am looking for (screenshot of Path Finder on Mac): By full-tree I mean: A tree view that includes files in addition to folders, and can be operated as its own pane-- not as a shared pane or attached pane which is characteristic of Q-Dir. Q-Dir and most others simply stick a folder tree pane on to a file list pane, which is not as useful (think Ruby on Rails application or anything with MVC-- I want to be able to pop open folders in the tree and have them stay open as I work between them). I have tried xplorer2 XYplorer Nexus File Free Commander muCommander CubicExplorer Double Commander Q-Dir Explorer++ Unreal Commander wxCommander Power Desk Directory Opus Has anyone seen a Windows app that has a full-tree view? • Good, secure video chat program

  I'm looking for something similar to skype but basically just for me to video chat with my girlfriend. Skype has been kind of buggy lately with its recent iterations and doesn't seem to be progressing as much as when it was with its previous backers. Are there any good, secure video chat programs? Something that customizable and lets you choose framerate vs pixelation and is generally secure (I don't care if the NSA can tap it but no one else, especially over unencrypted wifi's). Open source is preferred but not required. Free or really really cheap is practically required. Also, since this is point to point, an i am a power user (and my gf as well), it can involve some manual setup to establish a point-to-point link. Any suggestions, Thanks.

• WEB based HPC cluster node management

  Hello, i am working on my school diploma thesis. The main goal is to create web based application where logged users could see free and busy nodes, turn them on and off, see what process they are running etc. Figured out that i could do something like this - write some cron daemon that would run every 30seconds or so, and it could run ping utility for each node to find out if it is on or off, then write results to some file. Then from my web app (i will write in PHP) i could read the info. Will it be a good solution? How would you suggest me to do it? And finally, is there any existing solutions (it may not be a definetly ewb based) for managment of cluster nodes?

What about the differences in this seed data between one release and another? • How to design highly scalable web services in Java?

  I am creating some Web Services that would have 2000 concurrent users. The services are offered for free and are hence expected to get a large user base. In the future it may be required to scale up to 50,000 users. There are already a few other questions that address the issue like - Building highly scalable web services However my requirements differ from the question above. For example - My application does not have a user interface, so images, CSS, javascript are not an issue. It is in Java so suggestions like using HipHop to translate PHP to native code are useless. Hence I decided to ask my question separately. This is my project setup - Rest based Web services using Apache CXF Hibernate 3.0 (With relevant optimizations like lazy loading and custom HQL for tune up) Tomcat 6.0 MySql 5.5 My questions are - Are there alternatives to Mysql that offer better performance for what I'm trying to do? What are some general things to abide by in order to scale a Java based web application? I am thinking of putting my Application in two tomcat instances with httpd redirecting the request to appropriate tomcat on basis of load. Is this the right approach? Separate tomcat instances can help but then database becomes the bottleneck since both applications access the same database? I am a programmer not a Db Admin, how difficult would it be to cluster a Mysql database (or, to cluster whatever database offered as an alternative to 1)? How effective are caching solutions like EHCache? Any other general best practices? Some clarifications - Could you partition the data? Yes we could but we're trying to avoid it. We need to run a lot of data mining algorithms and the design would evolve over time so we can't be sure what lines of partition should be there.

• Config import on network-manager-openvpn

  I'm trying to use a free service using the OpenVPN protocol using OpenVPN's GUI module in the network manager. The config worked perfectly well as .ovpn on Windows. The behavior in Windows is such that I ran OpenVPN GUI and chose to connect to this particular VPN. It would then show the activity in the attempt to connect and opens a dialog box for username/password authentication. I've successfully imported all the configurations by changing the file type to .conf and using the import feature in network manager. However, attempting to connect would simply display the network manager's attempting to connect animation, but ultimately end with a notification of connection timing out. • State / Screen management in Entity Component Systems

  My entity/component system is happily humming along and, despite some performance concerns I initially had, everything is working fine. However, I've realized that I missed a crucial point when starting this thing: how do you handle different screens? At the moment, I have a GameManager class which owns a component manager and entity manager. When I create an entity, the entity manager assigns it an ID and makes sure it's tracked. When I modify the components that are assigned to an entity. an UpdateEntity method is called, which alerts each of the systems that they may need to add or remove the entity from their respective entity lists. A problem with this is that the collection of entities operated on by each system is determined solely by the individual Systems, typically based on a "required component" filter. (An entity has to have a Renderable component to be rendered, for instance.) In this situation, I can't just keep collections of entities per screen and only Update/Draw those collections. They'd have to either be added and removed depending on their applicability to the current screen, which would cause their associated components to be removed, or enable/disable entities in a group per screen to hide what's not supposed to be visible. These approaches seem like really, really crappy kludges. What's a good way to handle this? A pretty straightforward way that comes to mind is to create a separate GameManager (which in my implementation owns all of the systems, entities, etc.) per screen, which means that everything outside of the device context would be duplicated. That's bothersome because some things are always visible, or I might want to continue to display the game under a translucent menu window. Another option would be to add a "layer" key to the GameManager class, which could be checked against a displayable layer stack held by the game manager. *System.Draw() would be called for each active layer, in the required order as determined by the stack. When the systems request an iterator for their respective entity collections, it would be pre-filtered to a (cached) set of those entities that participate in the active layer. Those collections could be updated from the same UpdateEntity event that's already used to maintain each system's entity collections. Still, kinda feels like a hack. If I've coded myself into a corner, feel free to throw tomatoes as long as they're labeled with a helpful suggestion. Hooray for learning curves.

• Godaddy vs. Route53 for DNS

  I have my website set up as an EC2 instance and my DNS is currently Godaddy. I'm considering switching to Amazon AWS Route53 for DNS. The one thing I noticed however is that Route53 charges monthly fees but I never get any bills from Godaddy. Obviously, nobody likes getting charged for something they can get for free. If Godaddy is cheaper, can anyone confirm that the page load speed of an EC2 instance is actually better via Route53 vs. Godaddy? If it is not faster or cheaper, can someone point out other reasons it might make sense to do this switch? thanks, tim

• Keybindings for individual letter keys (not modifier-combinations) on a GtkTextView widget (Gtk3 and PyGI)

  I've been able to set several keybord shortcuts for a GtkTextView and a GtkTextEntry using the new css provider system. I'm finding, though, that I only seem to be able to establish keybindings for combinations including a modifier key. I want to set up something like Vim's command and visual modes. So far there's no response from the escape key or from the letter keys, even though the bindings work when I apply them to modifier-key combinations. • using php to list some files in folders

  I have collected many free themes from around internet. Each of them has a screenshot.jpg or png file on their folder. I want to scan all the folders for that file, and return the full file path to be used with an img html tag. I am not interested on partial path or folders where there are not screenshots. For example, if my fodler structure is: ./a/b/ ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./f/ ./g/screenshot.jpg ./h/i/j/k/ ./l/m/screenshot.png ./n/o/ ./p/screenshot.jpg I want to get: ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./g/screenshot.jpg ./l/m/screenshot.png ./p/screenshot.jpg I managed somehow to get a recursive function, but I figured only the way to return an array and then i can't get rid of what I don't need, and I miss png. • I Blame SNMP!

  Anyone who has been reading my blog would have noticed that I have deviated slightly from my original post plan! This post was meant to be on uploading files in Silverlight, so what happened you may ask? Well last weekend I had some friends over for a LAN and one of them brought a managed switch with, which he had just been purchased for work. He proceeded show me how cool it was, how he planned on improving his work network and how it can be monitored remotely via SNMP. After this explanation he started to google for a free SNMP graphing tool. After a few hours of hearing disgruntled mutterings from him I asked what was wrong, he proceeded to rant about how he couldn’t find any tools that suited his needs. It was at this point I though the most dangerous thing a programmer can ever think “I wonder how hard it would be to make one”, of course the answer at the time is always “It can’t be that hard”, and so started my journey into SNMP. I am still in the early stages of this journey so I don’t have to much to report yet, but once I have finished the first version of my SNMP graphing tool I will definitely be posting about it! For now if there are any of you who are interested in doing any SNMP development in C# I would recommend looking at the #Sharp project on CodePlex (http://sharpsnmplib.codeplex.com/), it is the SNMP library I have decided to use and thus far it works beautifully.

• What is better to have more LUNs or more Storages

  Hi, what is better to have - more LUNs or more Storages. Actually i have 1 storage ESXi per 1 LUN so there are about 15 LUNs and 15 storages. Now there is a kind of problem because the LUNs have different space allocated so if i remove 2 LUNs f.e. 1 2 3 4 [x] 6 [x] 8 9 (like that) i can't make 1 LUN from 5 and 7 pieces of free diskspace on IBM storage array. It's a first argument to not have a lot of LUNs. If i had to make only a few LUNs (about 3) and inside some Storage from ESXi would it be a better idea? For example for expanding storage capacity? i look for good solutions. Thanks in advance.
