N number of articles from each category is to be selected where N is configured in the Categories table. Each category should select the most recent N articles. Statement: SELECT AxEO.A_ID, AxEO.B_ID, AxEO.C_ID, ByEO.A_ID, ByEO.B_ID, ByEO.C_ID, Cz.A_ID, Cz.B_ID, Cz.C_ID FROM ABC_x AxEO, ABC_y ByEO, ABC_z CzEO WHERE AxEO.A_ID = ByEO.A_ID AND  CzEO.A_ID = :Bind_PId I copied and pasted the query on SQL worksheet, replaced :Bind_PId with a valid id, and executed the query. The query worked alright, implying the query was alright. I tried to connect to different DBs but the issue persisted, meaning it was not a DB issue either. Finally, the root cause was found to be in the concerned VO; one of the bind variables (say Bind_TId) was marked "Required". De-selecting the Required check-box resolved the issue. In retrospect, the issue looks to be rather straight-forward. However, the error message is not very helpful, if not misleading. Besides, it's counter-intuitive to think that a bind variable which is not being used in a query can cause error while statement preparation. The other bind variable - Bind_TId - was being used in other view criteria, not the view criteria involved in the given query. Still, it was required.

This can happen for many reasons such as lost archive logs, standby data files, failover, among others.This is why we wanted to have one script to recreate standby instances in an easy way.This script recreates the standby considering some prereqs:-Database Version should be at least 11gR1-Dummy instance started on the standby node (Seeking to improve this so it won't be needed)-Broker configuration hasn't been removed-In our case we have two TNSNAMES files, one for the Standby creation (using SID) and the other one for production using service names (including broker service name)-Some environment variables set up by the environment db script (like ORACLE_HOME, PATH...)-The directory tree should not have been modified in the stanby hostWe are currently using it on our 11gR2 Data Guard tests.Any improvements will be welcome!   Oracle Coherence Coherence provides replicated and distributed (partitioned) data management and caching services on top of a reliable, highly scalable peer-to-peer clustering protocol. Coherence has no single points of failure; it automatically and transparently fails over and redistributes its clustered data management services when a server becomes inoperative or is disconnected from the network. When a new server is added, or when a failed server is restarted, it automatically joins the cluster and Coherence fails back services to it, transparently redistributing the cluster load. Coherence includes network-level fault tolerance features and transparent soft re-start capability to enable servers to self-heal. The only point I may not agree with the authors is that Oracle Coherence is not an alternative to Oracle RAC in providing High Availability, but combining both Oracle RAC and Oracle Coherence will help Architects and Customers to reach higher level of service and high-availability.   Well – months of effort are now officially over… or should I say it’s just the beginning?   Enzo Cloud Backup 2.0 (beta) is now officially out!!! My immediate reaction was - why? and couple of basic doubts were: - since I can read uniqueidentifier, it does not tell me absolutely anything - if I will use my relational table, i sure will use other columns to get the information out - SQL is terrible when setting up clustered index on GUID columns (and hence performance problems) - why not use INT? it will save you space on disk, optimizer will be able...(read more)

• Converting a generic list into JSON string and then handling it in java script

  We all know that JSON (JavaScript Object Notification) is very useful in case of manipulating string on client side with java script and its performance is very good over browsers so let’s create a simple example where convert a Generic List then we will convert this list into JSON string and then we will call this web service from java script and will handle in java script. To do this we need a info class(Type) and for that class we are going to create generic list. Here is code for that I have created simple class with two properties UserId and UserName public class UserInfo { public int UserId { get; set; } public string UserName { get; set; } } Now Let’s create a web service and web method will create a class and then we will convert this with in JSON string with JavaScriptSerializer class.   The sys.dm_db_partition_stats DMV returns page count and row count information for each table or index within your database. Lets have a quick look at this DMV so we can review some of the results. **NOTE: I am going to create an ‘ObjectName’ column in our result set so that we can more easily identify tables. SELECT object_name(object_id) ObjectName, * FROM sys.dm_db_partition_stats As stated above, the first column in our result set is an Object name based on the object_id column of this result set. The partition_id column refers to the partition_id of the index in question. Each index will have at least 1 unique partition_id and will have more depending on if the object has been partitioned. The index_id column relates back to the sys.indexes table and uniquely identifies an index on a given object. A value of 0 (zero) in this column would indicate the object is a HEAP and a value of 1 (one) would signify the Clustered Index. Next is the partition_number which would signify the number of the partition for a particular object_id. Since none of my tables in my result set have been partitioned, they all display 1 for the partition_number. Next we have the in_row_data_page_count which tells us the number of data pages used to store in-row data for a given index. The in_row_used_page_count is the number of pages used to store and manage the in-row data. If we look at the first row in the result set, we will see we have 700 for this column and 680 for the previous. This means that just to manage the data (not store it) is requiring 20 pages. The next column in_row_reserved_page_count is how many pages have been reserved, regardless if they are being used or not. The next 2 columns are used for storing LOB (Large Object) data which could be text, image, varchar(max), or varbinary(max) columns. The next two columns, row_overflow, represent pages used for data that exceed the 8,060 byte row size limit for the in-row data pages. The next columns used_page_count and reserved_page_count represent the sum of the in_row, lob, and row_overflow columns discussed earlier. Lastly is a row_count column which displays the number of rows that are in a particular index. This DMV is a very powerful resource for identifying page and row count information. By knowing the page counts for indexes within your database, you are able to easily calculate the size of indexes.   I came to work for Oracle in November 2012 as a Customer Intelligence Representative and since then I was promoted to a Business Development Consultant, for Commercial Industries in the UK, based in Dublin. My background was primarily in Logistics, working for such companies as Indaver Ireland, Wincanton and P&O. I spent 10 years working in this industry and gained experience in negotiating with customers and suppliers in order to meet the needs of both, monitoring the quality and quantity of goods as well as the efficiency and organisation of the movement and storage of products. I decided to move from my logistics career in 2009 to study Information Technology in D.I.T. This was a challenge for me to move my career path; however the lectures at the college helped me significantly with the ability to understand how IT can have an effect on how businesses operate. Following on from college I came to work for Oracle. This also presented challenges but the training I received and the encouragement from management helped me understand that the same business rules apply no matter what background you come from. I have also learnt that using my past experience in working with customers and suppliers in Logistics has helped me understand how to meet customer’s needs. • ASUS X401A ubuntu installation

  I tried to install ubuntu in my laptop ASUSX401A. I removed windows in the partition tablea at the installation. All ok up to here, however when I reboot the HD after finish the installation, the HD was not recognized, in the bios not appeared the HD the only option was the realtek card, then was impossible to enter to ubuntu. After that I tried again to install ubuntu but now I have a error in the input/output when I wanted the enter the table partion. I appreciate any help Fabian

• Install of AppFabric RC stops AppFabric Monitoring (some traps for young players)

  I uninstalled AppFabric Beta 2 and installed AppFabric RC. The AppFabricEventCollection Service is started (runs under Local Service which is a dbo_owner on the Monitoring Database to prove this wasn’t the issue). The SQLServerAgent Service is started. Nothing is being written to the Monitoring DB Staging Table and thus nothing is being written to the Event tables or seen in the AppFabric Dashboard. Nothing has been written to the following event logs     - Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Admin     - Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Operational The Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Debug event log is not shown in the event viewer. The WCF configuration appears fine the connection string to the Monitoring DB is correct. Monitoring is set to “Trouble Shooting” and no errors are shown on the “Configure WCF and WF for Application” dialog. So the problem seems to lie with either AppFabric which writes to the event log or the AppFabricEventCollection Service. I thought I was flummoxed... However one of my colleagues said have you checked the etwProviderId? I was using a config which was created under AppFabric  Beta 2 which had a different etwProviderId. So I deleted the following section and all other references to AppFabric monitoring from the web.config and then recreated them using IIS the “Configure WCF and WF for Application” dialog and set the level to TroubleShooting.         <diagnostics etwProviderId="6b44a7ff-9db4-4723-b8cf-1b584bf1591b">             <endToEndTracing propagateActivity="true" messageFlowTracing="true" />         </diagnostics>   I then called a service to create some log entries. Still nothing was written to the Monitoring DB Staging Table... I checked the Microsoft-Windows-Application Server-System Services\Admin event log. It had the following entry... Configuration error. Please see the details to correct the problem. \rDetailed information:\r Filename: \\?\C:\Users\xxx\Documents\dotnetdev\Frameworks\SOA\xxx.SOA.Framework\xxx.SOA.Framework.MockServices\SimpleServiceParent\web.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions    System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Filename: \\?\C:\Users\xxx\Documents\dotnetdev\Frameworks\SOA\xxx.SOA.Framework\IAG.SOA.Framework.MockServices\SimpleServiceParent\web.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions   And guess who the user was... Local Service yes yes I should have used a better User in the AppFabric RC setup to run the AppFabricEventCollection Service under! So I changed the user to a more appropriate one and removed Local Service as a DBO and hay presto!

• SQL SERVER – Identify Numbers of Non Clustered Index on Tables for Entire Database

  Here is the script which will give you numbers of non clustered indexes on any table in entire database. SELECT COUNT(i.TYPE) NoOfIndex, [schema_name] = s.name, table_name = o.name FROM sys.indexes i INNER JOIN sys.objects o ON i.[object_id] = o.[object_id] INNER JOIN sys.schemas s ON o.[schema_id] = s.[schema_id] WHERE o.TYPE IN ('U') AND i.TYPE = 2 GROUP BY s.name, o.name ORDER BY schema_name, table_name Here is the small story behind why this script was needed. I recently went to meet my friend in his office and he introduced me to his colleague in office as someone who is an expert in SQL Server Indexing. I politely said I am yet learning about Indexing and have a long way to go. My friend’s colleague right away said – he had a suggestion for me with related to Index. According to him he was looking for a script which will count all the non clustered on all the tables in the database and he was not able to find that on SQLAuthority.com. I was a bit surprised as I really do not remember all the details about what I have written so far. I quickly pull up my phone and tried to look for the script on my custom search engine and he was correct. I never wrote a script which will count all the non clustered indexes on tables in the whole database. Excessive indexing is not recommended in general. If you have too many indexes it will definitely negatively affect your performance. The above query will quickly give you details of numbers of indexes on tables on your entire database. You can quickly glance and use the numbers as reference. Please note that the number of the index is not a indication of bad indexes. There is a lot of wisdom I can write here but that is not the scope of this blog post. There are many different rules with Indexes and many different scenarios. For example – a table which is heap (no clustered index) is often not recommended on OLTP workload (here is the blog post to identify them), drop unused indexes with careful observation (here is the script for it), identify missing indexes and after careful testing add them (here is the script for it). Even though I have given few links here it is just the tip of the iceberg. If you follow only above four advices your ship may still sink.   The sys.dm_db_missing_index_details Dynamic Management View is used to return information about missing indexes on your SQL Server instances. These indexes are ones that the optimizer has identified as indexes it would like to use but did not have. You may also see these same indexes indicated in other tools such as query execution plans or the Database tuning advisor. Let’s execute this DMV so we can review the information it provides us. I do not have any missing index information for my AdventureWorks2012 database, but for the purposes of illustrating the result set of this DMV, I will present the results from my msdb database. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_missing_index_details The first column presented is the index_handle which uniquely identifies a particular missing index. The next two columns represent the database_id and the object_id for the particular table in question. Next is the ‘equality_columns’ column which gives you a list of columns (comma separated) that would be beneficial to the optimizer for equality operations. By equality operation I mean for any queries that would use a filter or join condition such as WHERE A = B. The next column, ‘inequality_columns’, gives you a comma separated list of columns that would be beneficial to the optimizer for inequality operations. An inequality operation is anything other than A = B. For example, “WHERE A != B”, “WHERE A > B”, “WHERE A < B”, and “WHERE A <> B” would all qualify as inequality. Next is the ‘included_columns’ column which list all columns that would be beneficial to the optimizer for purposes of providing a covering index and preventing key/bookmark lookups. Lastly is the ‘statement’ column which lists the name of the table where the index is missing. This DMV can help you identify potential indexes that could be added to improve the performance of your system. However, I will advise you not to just take the output of this DMV and create an index for everything you see. Everything listed here should be analyzed and then tested on a Development or Test system before implementing into a Production environment.
