• Given a number of rectangles that can be rotated, find an enclosing rectangle of minimum area

  So, I'm trying to implement an algorithm that takes in a number of rectangles as input and tries to pack them into a rectangle of minimum area. The rectangles can all be rotated by 90 degrees. I realize that this is similar to the bin packing problem, but I am unable to find a good algorithm that accounts for the rotation. I found a paper that discusses this at length here and while I understand the article itself, I was hoping to find something simpler. Any suggestions? -Edit- I think I misstated the problem earlier. We are given a number of rectangles, such that each can be rotated by 90 degrees. We need to find a rectangle that fits all the given rectangles such that no two rectangles overlap, while minimizing the area of the enclosing rectangle. The problem I face here is that we are asked to find the minimum, as opposed to being given an enclosing rectangle and checking if the given rectangles fit or something of that sort.

  I am working on a legacy code base with an existing DB schema. The existing code uses SQL and PL/SQL to execute queries on the DB. We have been tasked with making a small part of the project database-engine agnostic (at first, change everything eventually). We have chosen to use Hibernate 3.3.2.GA and "*.hbm.xml" mapping files (as opposed to annotations). Unfortunately, it is not feasible to change the existing schema because we cannot regress any legacy features. The problem I am encountering is when I am trying to map a uni-directional, one-to-many relationship where the FK is also part of a composite PK. Here are the classes and mapping file... I encountered a problem when I tried to update and existing record. I received a BatchUpdateException and after looking through the SQL logs I saw Hibernate was trying to do something stupid... update COMPANY_NAME set COMPANY_ID=null where COMPANY_ID=? Hibernate was trying to dis-associate child records before updating them. The problem is that this field is part of the PK and not-nullable. I found the quick solution to make Hibernate not do this is to add "not-null='true'" to the "key" element in the parent mapping. SO now may mapping looks like this... I have also tryed changing it to a key-many-to-one element but that didn't work either. So... How can I map "insert='false' update='false'" on a composite-id key-property which is also used in a one-to-many FK?

• js regexp problem

  I have a searching system that splits the keyword into chunks and searches for it in a string like this: var regexp_school = new RegExp("(?=.*" + split_keywords[0] + ")(?=.*" + split_keywords[1] + ")(?=.*" + split_keywords[2] + ").*", "i"); I would like to modify this so that so that I would only search for it in the beginning of the words. For example if the string is: "Bbe be eb ebb beb" And the keyword is: "be eb" Then I want only these to hit "be ebb eb" In other words I want to combine the above regexp with this one: var regexp_school = new RegExp("^" + split_keywords[0], "i"); But I'm not sure how the syntax would look like. I'm also using the split fuction to split the keywords, but I dont want to set a length since I dont know how many words there are in the keyword string. split_keywords = school_keyword.split(" ", 3); If I leave the 3 out, will it have dynamic lenght or just lenght of 1? I tried doing a alert(split_keywords.lenght); But didnt get a desired response

• Autounattend.xml not being recognized in VirtualBox

  I am working my way through the steps on this page to prepare an unattended installation of Windows 7 Enterprise x64 for purposes of a college assignment which simply requires the process to be carried out and documented. Both the "technician" and "reference" computers are virtual machines created in VirtualBox 4.3.12, as will be the destination computer. I seem to have successfully completed Step 1, building an Autounattend.xml answer file using Windows System Image Manager, in as far as the answer file validates successfully. The problem arises when I try to install Windows on the reference machine from the DVD image in conjunction with the Autounattend file on a USB drive. I have tried a couple of different USB devices, and the devices themselves seem to be recognized, but the answer file does not, as instead of taking the configuration settings from the file the user interface appears as in a manual installation. Has anyone come across this problem or a solution? • Breaking the SQL Compact 8K Limit?

  I am creating a desktop application that stores rich text documents to a SQL Compact database. Documents are converted to a byte array and stored as a Binary column, and I am running into SQL Compact's 8K limit for Binary field length. Is there a simple way to get around the 8K limit? I can come up with lots of complicated ways to do it, such as parsing into 8K chunks for storage and reassembling on fetch. But before I get into something that complex, I would like to make sure I can't solve the problem more simply, such as by changing data type. If there is no simple way of getting around the 8K limit, is thare a best practice for storing documents greater than 8K? Thanks for your help.

  Hello everyone! I am trying to use Netbeans 6.7 (on a Mac) to create C++ applications. I started out with the standard "Hello World," just to test if everything was working correctly. First try std and could not be found. So I tried reinstalling the developer tools on my Mac OS X disk. After that Netbeans updated its c++ compiler info, but still cannot find std or . Odder than this XCode seems to be working with C++ perfectly fine. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

When I run the following linq statements I receive the error not a single-length projection: Surname I can find very few references to this on the web and looking into the source it says it should never occur! ClientID is a Int type and Surname is a string. • Can you create a HIPAA compliant Amazon S3 Web Application?

  I am facing some questions when trying to design an S3 application using ASP.NET MVC and trying to stay HIPAA compliant. My initial plan was to require an SSL connection to my web server, encrypt the images on my server, then send them to s3 using my private keys. Here's my obvious concerns: You cannot store unencrypted images in any temporary file cache when client views images within the browser. Even if I setup an ashx to generically handle the image in memory, couldn't this get stored in cache? Saying the images will be encrpyted because you will be connecting to my server via https still does not guarantee all browsers will not cache data. It's not possible to even consider the "Query String" with expiration option since data will be encrypted before being stored on disk at s3, and will again be decrypted at my server in memory. I think my only option would be to write/purchase some sort of ActiveX component that will not expose the image as a simple html image source or write my app as a client side WinForm application.

For Example: Input date range: 1/4/2010 11:21 am - 1/5/2010 3:00 pm Subtract out any partially or completely intersecting slices like this: Remove all day Sunday Non-Sundays remove 11:00 - 12:00 Non-Sundays remove time after 5:00 pm Non-Sundays remove time before 8:00 am Non-Sundays remove time 9:15 - 9:30 am Output: # of minutes left in the input date range I don't need anything overly-general. I could hardcode the rules to simplify the code. If anyone knows of sample code or a library/function somewhere, or has some pseudo-code ideas, I'd love something to start with. I didn't see anything in DateUtils, for example. Even a basic function that calculates the number of minutes of overlap in two date ranges to subtract out would be a good start.
