Simple cross platform GUI app

I would like to know if there is any way that I could build a very simple GUI app (it doesn't even have to look good) that will run on a fresh install of Windows Vista and OS X with no other installations needed by the user. I would perfer not to use Java (just out of personal programming preference). I will use it though, if it is the only way. Specically, I am wondering if I can write a swing app with Scala or Groovy and run in on windows without them having to install anything. Sorry if this is a silly question, I am a Obj-C developer by trade.

Slide div inside another div effect

I am trying to create sliding images effect: Online demolink text. The problem is when you click rapidly and randomly on the buttons and not wait for animation to finish causing unpredicted results and even stopping the functionality to work. (and once it stopped in the middle of 2 images...) How Can I make it work without bugs? I know that there are some other tools for that sliding like jquery and other approaches like changing the position attribute and not the scrollLeft attribute. But I want to do it as it is, with scrollLeft, if it possible of course. Javascript: Dynamic Check box (Fieldset with Father/Child Checkboxes)

I have a problem here, when I select any of the 'father' checkboxes all the child checkboxes are getting enabled or disabled. So I need each father checkbox to affect it own child fieldset. Could someone help me with this. How do I search using the Google Maps API?

Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how to search for nearby businesses in an iPhone app using the Google Maps API. I'm completely new to Javascript, and have waded through some of Google's sample code easily enough. I found how to grab the user's current location. Now I want to search for "restaurants" near that location. I'm just building on the sample code from here. Code golf: Word frequency chart

The challenge: Build an ASCII chart of the most commonly used words in a given text. The rules: Only accept a-z and A-Z (alphabetic characters) as part of a word. Ignore casing (She == she for our purpose). Ignore the following words (quite arbitary, I know): the, and, of, to, a, i, it, in, or, is Clarification: considering don't: this would be taken as 2 different 'words' in the ranges a-z and A-Z: (don and t). Optionally (it's too late to be formally changing the specifications now) you may choose to drop all single-letter 'words' (this could potentially make for a shortening of the ignore list too). Parse a given text (read a file specified via command line arguments or piped in; presume us-ascii) and build us a word frequency chart with the following characteristics: Display the chart (also see the example below) for the 22 most common words (ordered by descending frequency). The bar width represents the number of occurences (frequency) of the word (proportionally). Append one space and print the word. Make sure these bars (plus space-word-space) always fit: bar + [space] + word + [space] should be always <= 80 characters (make sure you account for possible differing bar and word lenghts: e.g.: the second most common word could be a lot longer then the first while not differing so much in frequency). Maximize bar width within these constraints and scale the bars appropriately (according to the frequencies they represent). An example: The text for the example can be found here (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll). How can I create a new email account in Java?

I am able to send and receive emails from my JSPs and associated Java code using the Java Mail API (javax.mail.*). Now I would like to create a new POP3 email account programmatically when a user registers for my site. I've found surprisingly little information about this with web searches. I would think it would be a somewhat common problem. It appears that the Java Mail API does not provide any assistance in this area. I have many email accounts available under my godaddy account, and to manually create an account, I just go to the godaddy email control panel, click Add, and specify the email address and password. This is exactly what I would like to do via a Java program. Any ideas?

Colouring JTree's TreeNodes

I have a JTree which I give objects that implement the TreeNode interface, and a custom TreeModel to display them (not using DefaultMutableTreeNode). I would like to change the text colour of some nodes. I can't find anything in the docs, except javax.swing.tree.DefaultTreeCellRenderer.setTextNonSelectionColor(Color newColor), but it will change everything indiscriminately, and I only need it for some nodes (specifically, broken links, i.e. nodes whose corresponding files can't be found on the disk, should be greyed out, the rest should be default). Can it be done, and how?

We do have many frameworks available in Java. Struts, Swing, JSF 2.0, Spring etc are used as per their priority. Actually, I don't know how many they are as well! But, as I am fresher to Java, even learning after their architecture, I cannot decide which framework can be used with what type of Projects ! Also, I am confused with mixed use of framework like Spring + JSF. What is the benefit to it ? Another thing making me confusing is about the UI components available in market. Like, we do have Primefaces, Ice-faces, MyFaces, Rich-faces. They may or may not have been supporting AJAX in-built. They may contains some bugs as well. What is best choice for Framework + UI component that can directly provide a best feet solution for any project ?

calling webservice in java servlet

I have created a servlet which displays a form having some fields and a submit button and also created a web service having methods which are needed in my servlet. I have deployed the web service on Tomcat 5.5.9/Axis and servlet web application on Tomcat ( same instance of Tomcat) using eclipse. Since one is web service and other is web application both are running on separate instances of tomcat, so when i run them separately i.e servlet without the call to web service and a client that access that webservice it works fine but when i integrate them both i get a error like exception: javax.servlet.ServletException I would like to call the web service and return the result when i press the button Please advice me on how to implement that.

The other profile I have is SOA Developer, but I could not pass beyond: Create webservice ( S=.5d, M=2d, H=7d ) Q.- What other activities should a Java Developer be able to do? How to get dropdown menu to open/close on click rather than hover?

Hello! I am very new to java and ajax/jquery and have been working on trying to get a script to open and close the drop menu on click rather that hover. The menu in question is found on http://www.gamefriction.com/Coded/ and is the dark menu on the right side under the header. I would like it to open and close like the other menu that is further below it (it is light gray and is in the "Select Division" module). The gray menu is part of a menu and the language menu is not. jQuery fadeIn and fadeOut buggy on hover of image

Hi All, I have four images on a page that on hover, needs to replace the main text with relevant text pertaining to that image. It's working but buggy. If I roll over slowly and roll off slowly, I get the desired effect. When I rollover quickly both div's content show. Unable to connect SQL Server instance from Visual Studio 2008 Version 9.0

I am getting the below error from VS on an 32-bit XP Professional server even though I set Tools-Options-Database Tools-Data Connections to "SIDEKICK", which is the name of my computer. In other words SIDEKICK should default to the full SQLSERVER. In other words, I want VS to use SQLSERVER instead of SQLSERVER EXPRESS. And I can clearly see my database both from VS in the Server Explorer and also in SSMS 2008. Furthermore, I can view the tables of this database in Server Explorer from VS. I do not get any build errors. And it looks like all of the naming is consistent in my web.config file. I am developing my website according to a Microsoft tutorial, so I should not be getting an error. Spring MVC with a rich client framework

I have several applications that are structured as follows DataComponent WebComponent ThickClientComponent WebServices The DataComponent has all the functionality required to access the application's data so it contains the DAOs and the JPA entities. The other three modules are: WebComponent - A spring MVC application that uses the DataComponent for data acccess ThickClientComponent- A Swing application that uses the DataComponent for data access WebServices - A SOAP based services that also uses the DataComponent. All three projets have the DataComponent as a dependeny in their Maven POM file. I would like to use a rich client framework like RichFaces, icefaces or primefaces as i need to be able to use the rich components are available in rich client frameworks (i.e. trees, panel, drag and drop etc). I have looked around and i cant seem to find an example where a Spring MVC application uses a rich client platform. Is it possible? Are the rich client platforms a framework meaning that i have to use either Spring MVC or the rich client platform but not both? The DataComponent module is spring based.

Google Maps API v3: Turning user input coordinates to latlng?

I'm new with Google Maps. I'm trying to turn coordinates a user inputs to move a marker I have on my map to those coordinates. For instance, if the user inputs 50.75, 74.1 the marker will pan to that coordinate. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work. Spring/Hibernate: InvocationTargetException when deleting entity

I'm sorry if this question is a bit vague, but I'm quite confused. I've got a controller that calls a service to delete an entity and then create an entity in its place. In the service, I've got my DAO, and my entity, and I want to delete my entity, so I call DAO.delete(entity); Then, seemingly out of nowhere, I get an InvocationTargetException. Problems with Tomcat server and JSP web application

I am running a JSP/Servlet Web application and out of nowhere we experienced some random problems that don't make any sense. I checked the catalina.out file to check the log files, and I noticed it contained some of the following messages SEVERE: Error starting static Resources java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid or unreadable WAR file : error in opening zip file INFO: validateJarFile(/home/weremo/appservers/ apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps /WMA/WEB-INF/lib/ servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class I am aware of what this message means, but am in the dark as to what could have caused it, or what effects it could have on the application.

With that in place, this all works fantastic. Comment that out, and var start is undefined when we hit the line to define var request. I discovered this when I removed the alert I put in there to show me the value of var start, and it quit working. If I DO ask it to alert me the value of var start, it tells me it's undefined, BUT it has a valid (and accurate!) value when we define var request a few lines later. I'm suspecting it's a timing issue--like an asynchronous something is having time to complete in the background in the moment it takes me to dismiss the alert. Any thoughts on work-arounds?

Will client JVM for a web service(https) throw an SSL Exception when the server is having a valid ce

I have a web service deployed on tomcat hosted on a remote server. I have set it up such that it can be accessed only via HTTPS. For this, I generated a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and used it to get a temporary certificate from VeriSign. My web service client is on my local machine. If I try to access the service it will throw a javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:unable to find valid certification path to requested target If I install the certificate in to local Java's keystore, the issue will be resolved. My question is if I install a valid SSL certificate from a CA in to my tomcat server, will I get this client-side error even if I do not import the certificate to local key store?
