I did an apt-get dist-upgrade, now everytime I do something using apt-get, e.g. installing something, it gives me that there are errors while handling the following packages: linux-image-extra-3.13.0-35-generic linux-image-generic linux-generic My system still works correctly, but is this normal? And what should I do? Should I do anything? Have I done the wrong thing by doing a dist-upgrade? (Beginner-like instructions please, I'm not an expert. Using Xubuntu 14.04.)

Unable to mount Windows (NTFS) filesystem due to hibernation

Whenever I boot Ubuntu, I get a message that it cannot mount my windows partition, and I can choose to either wait, skip or manually mount. When I try to enter my Windows partition through Nautilus I get a message saying that this partition is hibernated and that I need to enter the file system and properly close it, something I have done with no problem so I don't know why this happens. Here's my partition table, if any more data is needed please let me know. Each of these Windows and Linux servers has a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Our team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux and Windows servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of our pages, the variables or objects would replace that. I just installed ubuntu on my new intel SSD. Now I am not sure, whether paritions are properly aligned in respect to my specific SSD. When I run "update-grub", the file "grub.cfg" will contain lines like this. menuentry 'Ubuntu...' { ... linux /boot/vmlinuz... root=/dev/md124 ... ... } For the line of linux, is it possible to let it use UUID? Like, linux /boot/vmlinux... root=UUID=xxx Right now, every time after I do update-grub, I have to manually edit the line to use UUID. Otherwise, the boot will fail. Thanks for the help.

When I want to work on my local Linux machines from windows, I use Putty+Xming and I set the Xming port in Putty connection settings. This way I have a terminal on the machine and if, for example, I run the command 'firefox' a firefox window is opened in Windows (while it is really running on the Linux machine). I want to do the same thing from other Linux machine (they are both Ubuntu machine) connect by SSH and become this connection X Server so any graphic component will be opened on local machine. How can I do that?

I tried to use my Virtual Box and this is the error I received - (I just updated to the new Ubuntu also) and I am VERY new at this Linux OS :) Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

I had Ubuntu 12.04 BETA installed on my entire HD. Then I decided to also install Linux Mint Debian Edition 121204 (LMDE). With gparted I shrunk my /home to make room for one more distro I created the partitions needed for LMDE, but figured I could use the same swap I installed LMDE - no errors. During install I selected to install GRUB to /dev/sda Grub shows Linux Mint Debian Edition, but no sign of Ubuntu The new LMDE install will not boot I can use LMDE from USB stick, which is what I use right now My Ubuntu /home has data that is not backed up (must recover) If I can boot back into Ubuntu to back up I am OK again. Please help. creating extended partition

this is my current hard disk status(Running linux Mint LIVE CD) i have- Ubuntu 12.04 on 206 GB partition at dev/sda1. dev/sda2 system reserved. Windows 7 on 90GB partition at dev/sda3 and linux swap in extended partition. what i want to do- I want to install Linux mint KDE on my system for that i want to create a new partition of 30GB(by shrinking the free space available at dev/sda1), i can't create that because i can create only 4 Primary partitions which are already there. so do i have to delete the Swap partition? and if i did how to force Mint KDE and Ubuntu 12.04 to use/share same swap space in new logical partition?

How do I recover my accidentally lost Windows partitions after installing Ubuntu?. I try using PartitionWizard and Testdisk. But cannot recovery partition, Partitionwozard and Testdisk only detected the linux partition (Linux/Ext4 and Linux/Swap). I hope the answer. Please help. and Sorry for my English is not good. Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. Sun Fire X4800 M2 Posts World Record x86 SPECjEnterprise2010 Result

Oracle's Sun Fire X4800 M2 using the Intel Xeon E7-8870 processor and Sun Fire X4470 M2 using the Intel Xeon E7-4870 processor, produced a world record single application server SPECjEnterprise2010 benchmark result of 27,150.05 SPECjEnterprise2010 EjOPS. The Sun Fire X4800 M2 server ran the application tier and the Sun Fire X4470 M2 server was used for the database tier. The Sun Fire X4800 M2 server demonstrated 63% better performance compared to IBM P780 server result of 16,646.34 SPECjEnterprise2010 EjOPS. InfiniBand Enabled Diskless PXE Boot

When you want to bring up a compute server in your environment and need InfiniBand connectivity, usually you go through various installation steps. This could involve operating systems like Linux, followed by a compatible InfiniBand software distribution, associated dependencies and configurations. What if you just want to run some InfiniBand diagnostics or troubleshooting tools from a test machine ? What if something happened to your primary machine and while recovering in rescue mode, you also need access to your InfiniBand network ? Often times we use opensource community supported small Linux distributions but they don't come with required InfiniBand support and tools. In this weblog, I am going to provide instructions on how to add InfniBand support to a specific Linux image - Parted Magic.This is a free to use opensource Linux distro often used to recover or rescue machines. The distribution itself will not be changed at all. Yes, you heard it right ! I have built an InfiniBand Add-on package that will be passed to the default kernel and initrd to get this all working. Pr-requisites You will need to have have a PXE server ready on your ethernet based network. The compute server you are trying to PXE boot should have a compatible IB HCA and must be connected to an active IB network. Required Downloads Download the Parted Magic small distribution for PXE from Parted Magic website. Download InfiniBand PXE Add On package. Right Click and Download from here. Do not extract contents of this file. You need to use it as is. Prepare PXE Server Extract the contents of downloaded pmagic distribution into a temporary directory. Inside the directory structure, you will see pmagic directory containing two files - bzImage and initrd.img. Copy this directory in your TFTP server's root directory. This is usually /tftpboot unless you have a different setup. If you use host specific files in pxelinux.cfg, then you can use that specific file to add the above mentioned entry. Boot Computer over PXE Now boot your desired compute machine over PXE. This does not have to be over InfiniBand. Just use your standard ethernet interface and network. If using menus, then pick the new entry that you created in previous section. Enable IPoIB After a few minutes, you will be booted into Parted Magic environment. Open a terminal session and see if InfiniBand is enabled. You can use commands like: ifconfig -a ibstat ibv_devices ibv_devinfo If you are connected to InfiniBand network with an active Subnet Manager, then your IB interfaces must have come online by now. You can proceed and assign IP address to them. This will enable you at IPoIB layer. Example InfiniBand Diagnostic Tools I have added several InfiniBand Diagnistic tools in this add-on. GRUB 2 problem after Mac OS X update

I have a MacBook Pro in dual boot Mac OS X / Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). When I boot it I have a rEFIt menu, and I can chose between Mac OS X and Linux. A few days ago I have updated Mac OS X from 10.7 (Lion) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) using a .dmg image provided by my company. Since then when I select Linux in rEFIt it says: No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key I have tried going to rEFIt partitioning tool. This is what I got: As suggested in Mac OSX Mavericks update rEFIT broken I wanted to fix the issue the same way as AndrewM, but I don't have the option "MBR table must be updated". Then I booted on Ubuntu 12.04 CD, chose repair broken system, chose root patition /dev/sda6 as this is where my Ubuntu file system is. I got a shell, but I don't really know how to repair the poblem since if it was just Windows dual boot. A GRUB update would solve the issue, but here I don't know where the GRUB 2 is installed. Here are results from Parted, and it is a bit confusing for me as the Mac partition is the one with boot: As you can see the entry 1 is an EFI system partition and is the boot partition, so I wonder if I should install GRUB there or in sda6, which is the Ubuntu filesystem. I am not sure should I work on rEFIt shell or Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I don't remember where GRUB was before update. UPDATE: using same link above I have tried RoundSparrow hilltx answer and installed rEFInd, but the result is same.... still no bootable device when I select Linux. UPDATE 2: just used alternate CD again, mounted on /dev/sda6 and the ran update-grub. It seemed to wok and started listing all my kernels. But after rebooting several times still no bootable device when I select Linux in rEFInd. UDATE 3: Have tried to boot from Ubuntu cd and select "boot from first available filesystem. I got error and dropped to grub rescue shell. wifi hardware switch doesn't work on a Dell 1018

I have a problem with my Dell 1018 Inspiron. I can't switch the wifi on, through the key on the keyboard. I think it's a driver problem since Ubuntu 11.10. This are the versions i tried: Ubuntu 10.04 / 10.10 It's possible to install the driver by hand: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lexical/hwe-wireless sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install rtl8192ce-dkms Ubuntu 11.04 It works out of the box Ubuntu 11.10 / 12.04 I haven’t found any solution for these versions. The "ppa:lexical/hwe-wireless" doesn't work for these versions. It says Can not find package rtl8192ce-dkms. The window of additional drivers is empty. So I can't install the driver. The wired network works good. How to resize / enlarge / grow a non-LVM ext4 partition

I have already searched the forums, but couldnt find a good suitable answer: I have an Ubuntu Server 10.04 as KVM Host and a guest system, that also runs 10.04. The host system uses LVM and there are three logical volumes, which are provided to the guest as virtual block devices - one for /, one for /home and one for swap. The guest had been partitioned without LVM. I have already enlarged the logical volume in the host system - the guest successfully sees the bigger virtual disk. However, this virtual disk contains one "good old" partition, which still has the old small size. These are typically not described in product documentation, so you might miss references to them. The following five utilities may be run from the command line.(1) Deployment Report was introduced with EPM 11.1.2.2 (11 April 2012). It details logical web addresses, web servers, application ports, database connections, user directories, database repositories configured for the EPM system, data directories used by EPM system products, instance directories, FMW homes, deployment distory, et cetera. It also helps to keep you honest about whether you made changes to the system and at what times! Download Shared Services patch 13530721 to get the backported functionality in EPM 11.1.2.1. Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/epmsys_registry.sh report deployment (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\epmsys_registry.bat report deployment (on Microsoft Windows). The output is saved under \Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\diagnostics\reports\deployment_report.html (2) Log Analysis has received more "press". It was released with EPM 11.1.2.3 and helps the user to slice and dice EPM logs. It has many parameters which are documented when run without parameters, when run with the -h parameter, or in the 'Readme' file. It has also been released as a standalone utility for EPM 11.1.2.3 and earlier versions. (Sign in to My Oracle Support, click the 'Patches & Updates' tab, enter the patch number 17425397, and click the Search button. Download the appropriate platform-specific zip file, unzip, and read the 'Readme' file. Note that you must provide a proper value to a JAVA_HOME environment variable [pointer to the mother directory of the Java /bin subdirectory] in the loganalysis.bat | .sh file and use the -d parameter when running standalone.) Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/loganalysis.sh -h (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\loganalysis.bat -h (on Microsoft Windows). The actions are described on the command line. (4) The Remove Instance Command is only used if there are two or more instances configured on one computer and one of those should be deleted. Run it from /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin/remove-instance.sh (on Unix/Linux)\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\bin\remove-instance.bat (on Microsoft Windows). (5) The Reset Configuration Tool was introduced with EPM 11.1.2.2. It nullifies Shared Services Hyperion Registry settings so that a service may be reconfigured. You may locate the values to substitute for <product> or <task> by scanning registry.html (generated by running epmsys_registry.bat | .sh). Find productNAME in INSTANCE_TASKS_CONFIGURATION and SYSTEM_TASKS_CONFIGURATION nodes and identify tasks by property pairs that have values of 'Configurated' or 'Pending'.
