• Manually listing objects in Django (problem with field ordering)

  I'm having some trouble figuring out the best/Djangoic way to do this. I'm creating something like an interactive textbook. It has modules, which are more or less like chapters. Each module page needs to list the topics in that module, grouped into sections. My question is how I can ensure that they list in the correct order in the template? Specifically: 1) How to ensure the sections appear in the correct order? 2) How to ensure the topics appear in the correct order in the section? I imagine I could add a field to each model purely for the sake of ordering, but the problem with that is that a topic might appear in different modules, and in whatever section they are in there they would again have to be ordered somehow. I would probably give up and do it all manually were it not for the fact that I need to have the Topic as object in the template (or view) so I can mark it up according to how the user has labeled it. So I suppose my question is really to do with whether I should create the contents pages manually, or whether there is a way of ordering the query results in a way I haven't thought of. • problems with build params for accepts_nested_attributes_for

  I'm trying to add the user_id to a nested attribute that gets built by a parent controller but it doesn't seem to have the desired effect? Ie. I have a model called Place.rb which accepts_nested_attributes_for :reviews The nested attribute works fine and I build it inside the Places controller like so... @review = @place.reviews.build(:user_id => current_user.id) I was previously adding the user thru the form, but would like to do it thru the controller so that it only adds the user_id on creation, as it might get updated by someone else and i don't want the update changing the user_id... old way which works: <%= e.label :content, "Review" %><br /> <%= e.text_area :content, :rows => 20, :class => 'jquery_ckeditor' %><br /> <%= e.hidden_field :user_id, :value => current_user.id %> but thru the controller the build method with options has no effect? Any ideas? Can I not do this thru the build?

I have an ASP.NET MVC project, much like the NerdDinner tutorial example. (I'm using MVC 2, but followed the NerdDinner tutorial in order to create it). As per the instructions in part 3 of the tutorial, I've created a Linq-to-SQL model of my database by creating a "Linq to SQL Classes" (.dbml) surface, and dropping my database tables onto it. The designer has automatically added relationships between the generated classes based on my database tables. Let's say that my classes are as per the NerdDinner example, so I have Dinner and RSVP tables, where each Dinner record is associated with many RSVP records - hence in the generated classes, the Dinner object has a RSVPs property which is a list of RSVP objects. My problem is this: it appears (and I'd be gladly proved wrong on this) that as soon as I access a Dinner object, it's loading all of the corresponding RSVP objects, even if I don't use the RSVPs member. First question: is this really the default behavior for the generated classes? In my particular situation, the object graph contains many more tables (which have an order of magnitude more records), and so this is disastrous behaviour - I'd be loading tons of data when all I want to do is show the details of a single parent record. Second question: are there any properties exposed through the designer UI that would let me modify this behavior? (I can't find any). Third question: I've seen a description of how to control the loading of related records in a DataContext by using a DataShape object associated with the DataContext. Is that what I'm meant to do, and if so are there any tutorials like the NerdDinner one that would show not only how to do it, but also suggest a 'pattern' for normal use?

• Django's self.client.login(...) does not work in unit tests

  I have created users for my unit tests in two ways: 1) Create a fixture for "auth.user" that looks roughly like this: { "pk": 1, "model": "auth.user", "fields": { "username": "homer", "is_active": 1, "password": "sha1$72cd3$4935449e2cd7efb8b3723fb9958fe3bb100a30f2", ... } } I've left out the seemingly unimportant parts. 2) Use 'create_user' in the setUp function (although I'd rather keep everything in my fixtures class): def setUp(self): User.objects.create_user('homer', '[email protected]', 'simpson') Note that the password is simpson in both cases. I've verified that this info is correctly being loaded into the test database time and time again. I can grab the User object using User.objects.get. I can verify the password is correct using 'check_password.' The user is active. Yet, invariably, self.client.login(username='homer', password='simpson') FAILS. I'm baffled as to why. I think I've read every single Internet discussion pertaining to this. Can anybody help? The login code in my unit test looks like this: login = self.client.login(username='homer', password='simpson') self.assertTrue(login) Thanks.

• In Ruby, how to implement global behaviour?

  Hi all, I want to implement the concept of a Workspace. This is a global concept - all other code will interact with one instance of this Workspace. The Workspace will be responsible for maintaining the current system state (i.e. interacting with the system model, persisting the system state etc) So what's the best design strategy for my Workspace, bearing in mind this will have to be testable (using RSpec now, but happy to look at alternatives). Having read thru some open source projects out there and I've seen 3 strategies. None of which I can identify as "the best practice". They are: Include the singleton class. But how testable is this? Will the global state of Workspace change between tests? Implemented all behaviour as class methods. Again how do you test this? Implemented all behaviour as module methods. Not sure about this one at all! Which is best? Or is there another way? Thanks, Gordon

• Subscription Based Billing

  Hello All, I'm putting together a small start up company which will be set up with a subscription based billing model. The bill will go to customers on either a monthly or quarterly basis depending on the end user's preference. My question is two parted: I'm new to online billing and I'm only really aware of Pay Pal when it comes to third party bill payment, but this seems more like a check out system. I'm sure there are better alternatives than PayPal for third party billing processors (I have tried Googling for them, but I'm having trouble finding exactly what I'm looking for). What options (companies) are available for third party payment processing and what types of experiences (good or bad) have you had with them? We would like to give our customers the ability to set up recurring payments. I'd rather not store a customer's credit card number on our database as I imagine there are a plethora of compliance guidelines around this. Is there a third party solution for recurring payment processing? On a side note, this is not necessarily a code related question and is more business focused. I wasn't sure if there was a better route for posting this question, and please commont or modify this if there is another route I should take. Thanks!!

In table1 i have columns as AddressID(Primary Key),Address1,Address2,City In table2 i have columns as ContactID(Primary Key),AddressID(Foriegn Key),Last Name,First Name. By using join operation i can retrive data from both the tables. I created a Model in my MVC Application.I can see both the tables in enitity editor. • How to implement Excel Solver functionality in C#?

  Hi, I have an application in C#, I need to do some optimization calculations, like Excel Solver Add-in does, one option is certainly to write my own solver implementation, but I'm kind of short of time, so I'm looking into libraries that already exist that can help me with this. I've been trying the Microsoft Solver Foundation, which seems pretty neat and cool, the problem is that it doesn't seem to work with the kind of calculations that I need to do. At the end of this question I'm adding the information about the calculations I need to perform and optimize. So basically my question is if any of you know of any other library that I can use for this purpose, or any tutorial that can help to do my own solver, or any idea that gives me a lead to solve this issue. Thanks. Additional Info: This is the data I need to calculate: I have 7 variables, lets call them var1, var2,...,var7 The constraints for these variables are: All of them need to be 0 <= varn <= 0.5 (where n is the number of the variable) The sum of all the variables should be equal to 1 The objective is to maximize the target formula, which in Excel looks like this: (MMULT(TRANSPOSE(L26:L32),M14:M20)) / (SQRT(MMULT(MMULT(TRANSPOSE(L26:L32),M4:S10),L26:L32))) The range that you see in this formula, L26:L32, is actually the range with the variables from above, var1, var2,..., varn. M14:M20 and M4:S10 are ranges with data that I get from different sources, there are more likely decimal values. As I said before, I was using Microsoft Solver Foundation, I modeled pretty much everything with it, I created functions that handle the operations of the target formula, but when I tried to solve the model it always fail, I think it is because of the complexity of the operations. In any case, I just wanted to show these data so you can have an idea about the kind of calculations that I need to implement.

  Hello, I need to convert some code done by someone else, to work in my mvc model It is using some functions like EOD that I don't understand. Does that still work in a class? Primarely, my question focusus on the json output. I hope this was somewhat clear enough? The php manual warns that in some cases you don't get an array output, instead you get an object. So, with the EOD syntax, I am not really sure. • Blob in Java/Hibernate/sql-server 2005

  Hi, I'm trying to insert an HTML blob into our sql-server2005 database. i've been using the data-type [text] for the field the blob will eventually live in. i've also put a '@Lob' annotation on the field in the domain model. The problem comes in when the HTML blob I'm attempting to store is larger than 65536 characters. Its seems that is the caracter-limit for a text data type when using the @Lob annotation. Ideally I'd like to keep the whole blob in tact rather than chunk it up into multiple rows in the database. I appreciate any help or insight that might be provided. Each string seems to contain all cahracters, judging by the fact that the close html tag is present at the end of the string....

• Can't create an OgreBullet Trimesh

  I'm using Ogre and Bullet for a project and I currently have a first person camera set up with a Capsule Collision Shape. I've created a model of a cave (which will serve as the main part of the level) and imported it into my game. I'm now trying to create an OgreBulletCollisions::TriangleMeshCollisionShape of the cave. The code I've got so far is this but it isn't working. It compiles but the Capsule shape passes straight through the cave shape. Also I have debug outlines on and there are none being drawn around the cave mesh.   After googling for a while I'm still drawing a blank here. I'm trying to use a ViewModel to pull and provide a dictionary to a drop down list inside a strongly typed View: <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="Notebook.ViewModels.CorporationJoinViewModel" %> ... <%: Html.DropDownListFor(c => c.CorpDictionary.Keys, new SelectList(Model.CorpDictionary, "Value", "Key"))%> I'm getting the error CS1061: 'object' does not contain a definition for 'CorpDictionary' and no extension method 'CorpDictionary' accepting a first argument of type 'object' could be found and the relevant bit of my ViewModel public class CorporationJoinViewModel { DB _db = new DB(); // data context public Dictionary<int, string> CorpDictionary { get { Dictionary<int, string> corporations = new Dictionary<int, string>(); int x = 0; foreach (Corporation corp in _db.Corporations) { corporations.Add(x, corp.name); } return corporations; } } I'll admit i have a pretty magical understanding of how linq is finding my ViewModel object from that lambda, and the error message is making me think it's not. Is my problem the method I'm using to pass the data? What am I missing here?

• jQuery ui datepicker positioning problem when scrolling down webpage

  I have a webpage that uses multiple instances of the jQuery ui datepicker. My webpage will display ~80 records which extends beyond a single screenshot. <% foreach (var record in Model) { %> <div class="recordname"><%=record.name%></div> <%=Html.TextBox("DateTimePicker", null, new { @class = "date-pick" } )%> // <-- additional html here --> <% } %> I have set the defaults of my datepicker as follows: $(".date-pick").each(function() { $(this).datepicker({ dateFormat: 'dd M yy', showOn: 'button', buttonImage: '/Images/datepickericon.png', buttonImageOnly: true }); }); When the page first loads, if I click any datepicker icon that is visible on screen (i.e. without scrolling) then the datepicker appears as expected. However, if I scroll down the page and then click a datepicker icon, the datepicker does not appear in the screen window but is instead rendered right back near the top of the screen. Any ideas how to solve this? I am using: IE7 asp.net mvc jquery.ui.datepicker.js (UI/API/1.8/Datepicker)

• NSPredicate case-insensitive matching on to-many relationship

  I am implementing a search field where the user can type in a string to filter the items displayed in a view. Each object being displayed has a keywords to-many relationship, and I would like to be able to filter the objects based on their keywords. Each keyword object has a name property, so I've set up an NSPredicate to do the filtering that looks like this: NSPredicate* predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"keywords.name CONTAINS %@", self.searchString]; This works, but the problem is that the search is case-sensitive, so if the keyword has a capital letter but the user types in all lowercase, no matches are found. I've tried the following modification: NSPredicate* predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"keywords.name CONTAINS[c] %@", self.searchString]; But that doesn't make any difference in the case sensitivity of the matching. Is there a way to do this case-insensitive matching using just a plain predicate? Or will I need to implement some sort of custom accessor on the keyword class, e.g. write a lowercaseName method and match against a lowercased version of the search string instead? Addendum: After further exploration, the workaround of adding a custom accessor works OK for manual use of NSPredicate, but does not work at all when using NSFetchRequest with Core Data, which only works when querying attributes defined in the Core Data model.

• Core Data - Entity Relationships Not Working as expected

  I have set up my data model in xcode like so EntityA AttA1 AttA2 EntityB AttB1 AttB2 AttB3 I then set up the relationships EntityA Name: rlpToEntityB Destination: EntityB Inverse: rlpToEntityA To Many: Checked EntityB Name: rlpToEntityA Destination: EntityA Inverse: rlpToEntityB To Many: UnChecked i.e. relationship between the two where Each one of EntityA can have many EntityB's It is my understanding that if i fetch a subset of EntityB's I can then retrieve the values for the related EntityA's. I have this working so that i can retrieve the EntityB values using NSManagedObject *objMO = [fetchedResultsController objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; strValueFromEntityB = [objMO valueForKey:@"AttB1"]; However, if I try to retrieve a related value from EntityA by doing the following strValueFromEntityA = [objMO valueForKey:@"AttA1"]; I get the error "The entity EntityB is not Key value coding-compliant for the key Atta1" Not surprisingly i suppose if i switch things around to fetch from EntityA i cannot access attributes of EntityB So it appears the defined relationshipare being ignored. Can anyone spot what i am doing wrong? I confess im very new to iPhone programming and especially to Core Data so please go easy on me and provide verbose explanations or point me in the direction a specific resource. I have downloaded the apple sample apps (Core Data Books, Top Songs and recipes) but I still can't work this out. Thanks in advance, Nev.

  I have a form to enter subcontracts. On this form I have a dropdownlist of all companies in the system. Next to it is a button "Create Company". This button opens a jquery dialog which allows the user to create a new company. Once the dialog closes, the new company needs to be added to the dropdownlist and selected. If I refresh, it's there, but I need to do it without refreshing the form b/c I don't want the user to loose everything that they've entered into the other fields. I'm not sure how to do this b/c I don't have the guid of the new company.   I have a new controller in a module created with HMVC (admin), but i tried also without HMVC and the same issue.   I am trying to map a normalized Java model to a legacy database schema using Hibernate 3.5. One particular table encodes a foreign keys in a one-to-many relationship as a bit array column. In this example the members column tells us that: no one is a member of Cricket, Bob/Sue - Tennis, Bob/Sue/Joe - Cooking and Sue - Golf. In my Java domain I'd like to declare this with entities like so: class Person { private int id; private String name; ... } class Club { private Set<Person> members; private int id; private String name; ... } I am assuming that I must use a UserType implementation but have been unable to find any examples where the items described by the user type are references to entities - not literal field values - or composites thereof. Additionally I am aware that I'll have to consider how the person entities are fetched when a club instance is loaded. Can anyone tell me how I can tame this legacy schema with Hibernate?

• Project Architecture For Enhancing Legacy project.

  I am working on legacy project. Now the situation demands project to be divided into parts. What strategy I should follow to do this task. Description: The legacy project (A) is fully functional web application with almost well defined layers. But now i need to extend the project to a further enhancement. This project usage maven as build tool. But it is used only for dependency managements only. (project exported to war form inside eclipse). The new enhancement needs me to add new data table, new UI(jsp, css, js and images). What should be my strategy to enhance to application. My proposed design. I am planing to create two new projects Project B : Main Enhancement works will done in this project. Will have all layers like service layer, dao layer and UI layer in itself. And will be a web application in itself. Project C : Extract some common model and service code form project-A and create this project. This project will be added as dependency to both the projects. If my this approach is okay! Then i presume there will be problem be problem in deployment. These two projects will demand to deploy separately(currently tomcat is used). But I must deploy these two projects as one war. So, i need to have a plan to change the web.xml entries to have configurations for both projects. This will comes with some more complexities with project. What should be my design for the project? Does my plan sounds good.

• Why do you have to explicitly specify scope with friendly_id?

  I'm using the friendly_id gem. I also have my routes nested: # config/routes.rb map.resources :users do |user| user.resources :events end So I have URLs like /users/nfm/events/birthday-2009. In my models, I want the event title to be scoped to the username, so that both nfm and mrmagoo can have events birthday-2009 without them being slugged. # app/models/event.rb def Event < ActiveRecord::Base has_friendly_id :title, :use_slug => true, :scope => :user belongs_to :user ... end I'm also using has_friendly_id :username in my User model. However, in my controller, I'm only pulling out events pertinent to the user who is logged in (current_user): def EventsController < ApplicationController def show @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id]) end ... end This doesn't work; I get the error ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound; expected scope but got none. # This works @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id], :scope => 'nfm') # This doesn't work, even though User has_friendly_id, so current_user.to_param _should_ return "nfm" @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id], :scope => current_user) # But this does work! @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id], :scope => current_user.to_param) SO, why do I need to explicitly specify :scope if I'm restricting it to current_user.events anyway? And why does current_user.to_param need to be called explicitly? Can I override this?

• Should DAL always return business objects in MVP

  In Model View Presenter (MVP) pattern, it is said that our DAL always should returns business models. But let's say if I want to get just a number from database like the last ClientID (the latest clients ID) which is a string, should my DAL method returns a ClientInfo object which has about 10 other fields as well like ClientName, Address etc.?
