  parameterMap objects defined by managed beans can help reduce the number of child <parameter> elements listed under an ADF region or dynamic region page definition task flow binding. But more importantly, the parameterMap approach also allows greater flexibility in determining what input parameters are passed to an ADF region or dynamic region. This can be especially helpful when using dynamic regions where each task flow utilized can provide an entirely different set of input parameters. The parameterMap is specified within an ADF region or dynamic region page definition task flow binding as shown below: <taskFlow id="checkoutflow1" taskFlowId="/WEB-INF/checkout-flow.xml#checkout-flow" activation="deferred" xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/controller/binding" parametersMap="#{pageFlowScope.userInfoBean.parameterMap}"/> The parameter map object must implement the java.util.Map interface. • I want to hit Apex SQL with a big stick

  <Whinge> Thought id just have a little whinge about this product which caused me a load of grief the other day..... So the background was that my development machine had a completely full hard disk which I needed to sort out.  Upon investigation I found the issue was that the msdb database had managed to get very large. This was caused because a long time ago (and I cant even remember why) I tried out Apex SQL.  After a few days I decided to uninstall it and thought nothing more of it.  What I didnt realise was that uninstalling it doesnt actually uninstall it (and it doesnt inform you about this), but there was still some assemblies left on my machine.  Everytime SQL Server was running it was starting the Apex SQL Connection monitor which was then running in the background and regularly recording information in the msdb database.  Over time it had recorded enough to fill the disk. The below article advises how to sort this out by removing this fully so if your having a problem then try this out:http://knowledgebase.apexsql.com/2007/08/how-to-uninstall-apexsqlconnectionmonit_09.htm Once this was sorted out its interesting to read the above article because I just dont think the approach used by the vendor of this software is a very good one.  So for the Apex team just wanted to pass on a thought: If I want to uninstall your product you should tell me if stuff is left on the machine especially if a process will be running which is going to fill my machine with useless data, </Whinge>

• Auto-cancel reason not found (6, 13906)

  There are many errors in the application which are never invoked because of appropriate application configuration done at the time of implementation by the solution architects. So typically, as an application end user you would never stumble upon such errors. But what if the application administrator inadvertently changes the configuration/setup in the development, test, QA, or production environment? This is the time when you as an end user are introduced to a brand-new error for which you may not have a clue or understanding to what it means and neither the access/privilege to rectify it.    In this post we'll focus on one such error '6, 13906 - Auto-cancel reason not found'.   You get this error if you have not defined a Bill (Segment) Cancel Reason (Admin Menu, B, Bill Cancel Reason) code with System Default value of Turn off auto-cancel.   Consider a scenario when you are about to final bill an 'Account' for which the bill period's cut-off date you selected is falling on or after the Service Agreement's (SA) end/stop date (basically SA is Stopped with a date earlier than it was billed previously). And for the same 'Account' either: Bill segments exists that end after the SA's end date OR Non-closing bill segments exists that end on the SA's end date (OR closing bill segments that do not end on SA's end date or do not exist at all - remember closing/final bill segment is generated if the SA is in Stopped status).   CC&B detects such scenario and attempts to cancel all such violating bill segments automatically, but NOT if you are generating the bill Online. If online, the system assumes that you know what you are doing, and prompts you with error 2, 13716 - Bill segments that violate the SA (%1) End Date (%2) exist to take necessary action.   If in batch, system automatically cancels these kinds of bill segment(s).   Since this happens in the background, you have to define within the application which System Default Bill (Segment) cancellation reason code identified as Turn off auto-cancel, should be used by the process when it attempts to cancel any such violating bill segments (You already know that you cannot cancel a bill segment without giving a reason for cancellation).   So what exactly happens during batch billing?   Bill Segment generation routine at first determines billing eligibility of the service agreement being billed. One of the billing eligibility criteria is to check the SA's previous bill segments which have end dates greater than the current cut-off date/end date. Technically, the routine retrieves a count of such violating bill segments.     SELECT COUNT (*) FROM CI_BSEG WHERE SA_ID = :SA-ID AND BSEG_STAT_FLG = '50' -- Frozen AND END_DT IS NOT NULL AND (END_DT > '03-JUN-2010' -- Bill segment greater than SA's End Date OR OR (END_DT = '03-JUN-2010' AND CLOSING_BSEG_SW = 'N')) -- Non-closing bill segment ending on SA's end date   If the count is greater than zero, Bill segment generation routine executes another program to auto-cancel such bill segments. Auto-cancel program retrieves the 'Bill Cancel Reason' code which is identified as Turn off auto-cancel. Retrieved cancel reason code is then placed on the bill segments that are being cancelled automatically.   During this process if the routine fails to determine the bill cancel reason code having System Default Turn off auto-cancel because it was not been configured, you get a bill exception 6, 13906 - Auto-cancel reason not found.   Also note that duplicate or multiple System Default codes identified as Turn off auto-cancel are not allowed. CC&B would complain with an error 2, 54201.   Duplicate validation/check is also performed within Auto-cancel routine, if suppose for test purposes you executed a DML statement updating CI_BILL_CAN_RSN.BSCAN_SYS_DFLT_FLG with a value 'T'.

• Dude, what’s up with POP Forums vNext?

  Yeah, it has been awhile. I posted v9.2 back in January, about five months ago. That’s a real change from the release pace I had there for awhile. Let me explain what’s going on. First off, in the interim, I re-launched CoasterBuzz, which required a lot of my attention for about two of those months. That’s a good thing though, because that site is just about the best test bed I could ask for. The other thing is that I committed to make the next version use ASP.NET MVC 4, which is now at the RC stage. I didn’t think much about when they’d hit their RTW point, but RC is good enough for me. To that end, there is enough change in the next version that I recently decided to make it a major version upgrade, and finish up the loose ends and science projects to make it whole. Here’s what’s in store… Mobile views: I sat on this or a long time. Originally, I was going to use jQuery Mobile, and waited and waited for a new release, but in the end, decided against using it. Sometimes buttons would unexplainably not work, I felt like I was fighting it at times, and the CSS just felt too heavy. I rolled my own mobile sugar at a fraction of the size, and I think you’ll find it easy to modify. And it’s Metro-y, of course! Re-do of background services: A number of things run in the background, and I did quite a bit of “reimagining” of that code. It’s the weirdness of running services in a Web site context, because so many folks can’t run a bona fide service on their host’s box. The biggest change here is that these service no longer start up by default. You’ll need to call a new method from global.asax called PopForumsActivation.StartServices(). This is also a precursor to running the app in a Web farm (new data layer and caching is the second part of that). I learned about this the hard way when I had three apps using the forum library code but only one was actually the forum. The services were all running three times as often with race conditions and hits on the same data. That was particularly bad for e-mail. CSS clean up: It’s still not ideal, but it’s getting better. That’s one of those things that comes with integrating to a real site… you discover all of the dumb things you did. The mobile CSS is particularly easier to live with. Bug fixes: There are a whole lot of them. Most were minor, but it’s feeling pretty solid now. So that’s where I am. I’m going to call it v10.0, and I’m going to really put forth some effort toward finishing the mobile experience and getting through the remaining bugs. The roadmap beyond that will likely not be feature oriented, but rather work on some other things, like making it run in Azure, perhaps using SQL CE, a better install experience, etc. As usual, I’ll post the latest here. • Continuous Physics Engine's Collision Detection Techniques

  I'm working on a purely continuous physics engine, and I need to choose algorithms for broad and narrow phase collision detection. "Purely continuous" means I never do intersection tests, but instead want to find ways to catch every collision before it happens, and put each into "planned collisions" stack that is ordered by TOI. Broad Phase The only continuous broad-phase method I can think of is encasing each body in a circle and testing if each circle will ever overlap another. This seems horribly inefficient however, and lacks any culling. I have no idea what continuous analogs might exist for today's discrete collision culling methods such as quad-trees either. How might I go about preventing inappropriate and pointless broad test's such as a discrete engine does? Narrow Phase I've managed to adapt the narrow SAT to a continuous check rather than discrete, but I'm sure there's other better algorithms out there in papers or sites you guys might have come across. What various fast or accurate algorithm's do you suggest I use and what are the advantages / disatvantages of each? Final Note: I say techniques and not algorithms because I have not yet decided on how I will store different polygons which might be concave, convex, round, or even have holes. I plan to make a decision on this based on what the algorithm requires (for instance if I choose an algorithm that breaks down a polygon into triangles or convex shapes I will simply store the polygon data in this form).

• Imperative vs. LINQ Performance on WP7

  Jesse Liberty had a nice post presenting the concepts around imperative, LINQ and fluent programming to populate a listbox. Check out the post as it’s a great example of some foundational things every .NET programmer should know. I was more interested in what the IL code that would be generated from imperative vs. LINQ was like and what the performance numbers are and how they differ. The code at the instruction level is interesting but not surprising. In fact if you have ReSharper installed you’ll see a squiggly (technical term) in the imperative code that says “Hey Dude, I can convert this to LINQ if you want to be c00L!” (or something like that, it’s the 2010 geek version of Clippy). What about the fluent version? As Jon correctly pointed out in the comments, when you compare the IL for the LINQ code and the IL for the fluent code it’s the same. LINQ and the fluent interface are just syntactical sugar so you decide what you’re most comfortable with. At the end of the day they’re both the same. Now onto the numbers. Again I expected the imperative version to be better performing than the LINQ version (before I saw the IL that was generated). Call it womanly instinct. A gut feel. Whatever. Some of the numbers are interesting though. For Jesse’s example of 50 items, the numbers were interesting. The imperative sample clocked in at 7ms while the LINQ version completed in 4. As the number of items went up, the elapsed time didn’t necessarily climb exponentially. At 500 items they were pretty much the same and the results were similar up to about 50,000 items. After that I tried 500,000 items where the gap widened but not by much (2.2 seconds for imperative, 2.3 for LINQ). It wasn’t until I tried 5,000,000 items where things were noticeable. Imperative filled the list in 20 seconds while LINQ took 8 seconds longer (although personally I wouldn’t suggest you put 5 million items in a list unless you want your users showing up at your door with torches and pitchforks). Here’s the table with the full results. In fact if Windows Phone 7 detects you’re taking more than 10 seconds to do any one thing, it considers the app hung and shuts it down. The results here are for Windows Phone 7 but frankly they're the same for desktop and web apps so feel free to apply it generally. From a programming perspective, choose what you like. Some LINQ statements can get pretty hairy so I usually fall back with my simple mind and write it imperatively. If you really want to impress your friends, write it old school then let ReSharper do the hard work for! Happy programming!

• shared hosting: ssl domain receives all server's ssl requests, google gets it wrong

  This website is hosted on a shared server. I've recently had my hosting provider secure our website using SSL (https://domain.com instead of http://domain.com). Ever since then, all https requests sent to the server are redirected to my website. https://otherdomain.com leads to a warning, then, if you continue, to my website. Ok, my fault, i should have known SSL means 1 IP, otherwise, this thing can happen. But... Google Search results for my website's target keywords is now displaying these websites above my own, even though they have nothing even remotely related to the target keywords! already done: provide canonical url in the html page. told the problem to the server manager, who tells me it's normal but he'll look for a solution. This was one week ago, no answer since. I have no idea why Google is providing these https urls: i thought someone would have to submit them, or have them inside an html page in order for Google to actually index dummy https domains, but i see no reason why someone would do that. Any suggestion on how to solve this situation? Golive is in one week and SEO looks really bad because of that.

  I’ve been brushing up on sparse columns and filtered indexes recently and two resources stood out for me as indispensable so I’d thought I’d share them. Those of you studying for Microsoft Certified Master: SQL Server will no doubt have found the Readiness Videos published on TechNet and Kimberley Tripp’s (Blog|Twitter) webcast in this series on Sparse columns provides an excellent resource showing different schema designs and specifically where sparse columns fit in. • Oracle Fusion Procurement Designed for User Productivity

  Sean Rice, Manager, Applications User Experience Oracle Fusion Procurement Design Goals In Oracle Fusion Procurement, we set out to create a streamlined user experience based on the way users do their jobs. Oracle has spent hundreds of hours with customers to get to the heart of what users need to do their jobs. By designing a procurement application around user needs, Oracle has crafted a user experience that puts the tools that people need at their fingertips. In Oracle Fusion Procurement, the user experience is designed to provide the user with information that will drive navigation rather than requiring the user to find information. One of our design goals for Oracle Fusion Procurement was to reduce the number of screens and clicks that a user must go through to complete frequently performed tasks. The requisition process in Oracle Fusion Procurement (Figure 1) illustrates how we have streamlined workflows. Oracle Fusion Self-Service Procurement brings together billing metrics, descriptions of the order, justification for the order, a breakdown of the components of the order, and the amount—all in one place. Previous generations of procurement software required the user to navigate to several different pages to gather all of this information. With Oracle Fusion, everything is presented on one page. The result is that users can complete their tasks in less time. The focus is on completing the work, not finding the work. Figure 1. Creating a requisition in Oracle Fusion Self-Service Procurement is a consumer-like shopping experience. Will Oracle Fusion Procurement Increase Productivity? To answer this question, Oracle sought to model how two experts working head to head—one in an existing enterprise application and another in Oracle Fusion Procurement—would perform the same task. We compared Oracle Fusion designs to corresponding existing applications using the keystroke-level modeling (KLM) method. This method is based on years of research at universities such as Carnegie Mellon and research labs like Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. The KLM method breaks tasks into a sequence of operations and uses standardized models to evaluate all of the physical and cognitive actions that a person must take to complete a task: what a user would have to click, how long each click would take (not only the physical action of the click or typing of a letter, but also how long someone would have to think about the page when taking the action), and user interface changes that result from the click. By applying standard time estimates for all of the operators in the task, an estimate of the overall task time is calculated. Task times from the model enable researchers to predict end-user productivity. For the study, we focused on modeling procurement business process task flows that were considered business or mission critical: high-frequency tasks and high-value tasks. The designs evaluated encompassed tasks that are currently performed by employees, professional buyers, suppliers, and sourcing professionals in advanced procurement applications. For each of these flows, we created detailed task scenarios that provided the context for each task, conducted task walk-throughs in both the Oracle Fusion design and the existing application, analyzed and documented the steps and actions required to complete each task, and applied standard time estimates to the operators in each task to estimate overall task completion times. The Results The KLM method predicted that the Oracle Fusion Procurement designs would result in productivity gains in each task, ranging from 13 percent to 38 percent, with an overall productivity gain of 22.5 percent. These performance gains can be attributed to a reduction in the number of clicks and screens needed to complete the tasks. For example, creating a requisition in Oracle Fusion Procurement takes a user through only two screens, while ordering the same item in a previous version requires six screens to complete the task. Modeling user productivity has resulted not only in advances in Oracle Fusion applications, but also in advances in other areas. We leveraged lessons learned from the KLM studies to establish products like Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS). New user experience features in EBS 12.1.3, such as navigational improvements to the main menu, a Google-type search using auto-suggest, embedded analytics, and an in-context list of values tool help to reduce clicks and improve efficiency. • My old Conchango blog posts are currently not accessible

  Some of you reading this may be aware that I used to blog at http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson. That URL later changed to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson after Conchango (my employer) got taken over by EMC. In my last post on that site: I stated that I had 676 blog posts on that site. Unfortunately, as of today, those 676 posts are inaccessible. If you try to get to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson today you will see this: I am not the only one affected either; it seems that EMC have taken the same action for many blog sites of my old colleagues (e.g. http://consultingblogs.emc.com/merrickchaffer is also inaccessible). Early indications are that EMC have removed all blog posts by any former employees although that is yet to be confirmed.   A few of us former employees are endeavouring to get this situation rectified so watch this space. • Challenges and Opportunities to Drive Change in the Healthcare System Explored at America’s Health Insurance Plans Exchange Conference and Institute 2013

  The program theme at the June America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Exchange Conference and AHIP’s Institute 2013 was Transforming Our Health Care System: Navigating and Succeeding in the New Marketplace.  Topics included care delivery transformation, innovation for a new healthcare eco system, Health Insurance Exchanges, the nexus of consumerism, retail and healthcare, driving value through improved operations and leveraging technology, data and innovation to transform care. Oracle participated as a sponsor of both conferences, signaling the significant investment and activity Oracle continues to make in helping health plans, providers and government agencies become more efficient and more relevant in the healthcare market place. AHIP is a national trade association representing the health insurance industry. AHIP’s members provide health and supplemental benefits to more than 200 million Americans through employer-sponsored coverage, the individual insurance market and public programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.   AHIP advocates for public policies that expand access to affordable health care. Health plans are focusing on the Health Insurance Exchanges and the opportunities they offer to provide better access and higher quality healthcare.  With the opportunities come operational challenges to implementation and innovative technology solutions to consider.   At the Exchange Conference, Oracle hosted a breakfast symposium on “Strategies for Success:  Driving Business Transformation in the Growing Health Insurance Exchange Market”. With Health Insurance Exchanges as catalysts for change, attendees learned about how to achieve integration within an Exchange and deploy new business strategies to support health reform initiatives. Discussion covered steps and processes to successfully establish and implement enrollment systems, quote to card activities, program pricing, claims billing, automated claims processing and new customer service tools. Piyush Pushkar, COO of Benefitalign, an Oracle partner that provides solutions to adopt innovative business models for retail, HIX, consumer-centric health plan and benefits administration, spoke on the state of the Exchanges in the U.S. and the activities health plans are engaged in to support individuals entering the healthcare system, including sales automation, member enrollment automation/portals and integration strategies with the Exchanges. The Oracle and Benefitalign partnership allows seamless integration between a health plan enrollment solution with the HIX individual market and allows for the health plan to customize and characterize the offerings available to the HIX that may or may not be available through other channels.  This approach can benefit the health plan through separation of interests, but also because some state-run HIXs require such separation. Janice W. Young, Program Director, Payer IT Strategies, IDC Health Insights, reviewed a survey of health plans on their investment priorities for this last year as well as this year.  She also identified the 2013-2015 strategies of go/get to market with front end and compliance investments; leveraging existing business processes and internal technologies; and establishing best practices.  Of key interest to the audience was a reform era payer solutions platform overview mapping technologies to support the business operations. David Bonham of the Oracle Health Insurance organization moderated the panel and spoke on Oracle’s presence in healthcare and products for payers to help them drive efficiencies and gain a competitive advantage in an ever changing market. • Windows Azure Use Case: Agility

In theory, the speed at which your organization can develop and deploy an application on available hardware is identical to what you could deploy in a distributed environment. But in practice, this is not always the case. Having an option to use a distributed environment can be much faster for the deployment and even the development process. Implementation: When an organization designs code, they are essentially becoming a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider to their own organization. To do that, the IT operations team becomes the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) to the development teams. From there, the software is developed and deployed using an Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) process. A simplified view of an ALM process is as follows: Requirements Analysis Design and Development Implementation Testing Deployment to Production Maintenance In an on-premise environment, this often equates to the following process map: Requirements Business requirements formed by Business Analysts, Developers and Data Professionals. Analysis Feasibility studies, including physical plant, security, manpower and other resources. Request is placed on the work task list if approved. Design and Development Code written according to organization’s chosen methodology, either on-premise or to multiple development teams on and off premise. Implementation Code checked into main branch. Code forked as needed. Testing Code deployed to on-premise Testing servers. If no server capacity available, more resources procured through standard budgeting and ordering processes. Manual and automated functional, load, security, etc. performed. Deployment to Production Server team involved to select platform and environments with available capacity. If no server capacity available, standard budgeting and procurement process followed. If no server capacity available, systems built, configured and put under standard organizational IT control. Systems configured for proper operating systems, patches, security and virus scans. System maintenance, HA/DR, backups and recovery plans configured and put into place. Maintenance Code changes evaluated and altered according to need. In a distributed computing environment like Windows Azure, the process maps a bit differently: Requirements Business requirements formed by Business Analysts, Developers and Data Professionals. Analysis Feasibility studies, including budget, security, manpower and other resources. Request is placed on the work task list if approved. Design and Development Code written according to organization’s chosen methodology, either on-premise or to multiple development teams on and off premise. Implementation Code checked into main branch. Code forked as needed. Testing Code deployed to Azure. Manual and automated functional, load, security, etc. performed. Deployment to Production Code deployed to Azure. Point in time backup and recovery plans configured and put into place.(HA/DR and automated backups already present in Azure fabric) Maintenance Code changes evaluated and altered according to need. This means that several steps can be removed or expedited. It also means that the business function requesting the application can be held directly responsible for the funding of that request, speeding the process further since the IT budgeting process may not be involved in the Azure scenario. An additional benefit is the “Azure Marketplace”, In effect this becomes an app store for Enterprises to select pre-defined code and data applications to mesh or bolt-in to their current code, possibly saving development time.   Before getting started with the JMS Adapter, we must configure the connection factories/JMS queues on the WLS admin console. In particular, we will be required to follow these stepsCreate a connection factory. In our case, we will create a "XA Connection Factory". This step is mandatory if you need your JMS queues to participate in a global transaction. Create the WLS JMS QueuesCreating the connection factory:1) Login to the WLS Admin console. On my setup, the url looks like "http://localhost:7001/console".2) Select Services -> Messaging -> JMS Modules -> SOAJMSModule as shown below. We can also create a new JMS Module, but, I took the easier way out by selecting the SOAJMSModule. 3) Click on "New" as shown in order to create the Connection factory.4) Select "Connection Factory" radio button and click "Next".5) Enter the Connection Factory properties as shown and click on "Finish".6) Target the connection factory to your managed server and click on "Finish". 7) Now, go back and select the Connection Factory that you've just created (see Step 2 above) . Click on "Transactions" and enable XA and click on "Save".

• Ubuntu 14.04: After login, top- and sidepanel don't load and system settings don't open

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 on a Medion Erazer with the Nvidia GTX570M card. At first, while I had not installed the last nvidia driver, each time I would try to suspend my pc it would freeze frame on the login. Once I managed to install the nvidia drivers, everything seemed to work up until I noticed that suddenly the system settings would not open anymore. I then rebooted my pc, but when I logged in I just end up with my cursor but no top panel or side pannel. Thankfully, I had installed the gnome desktops which works, except for the fact the system settings do not open also in the gnome desktop. I have tried following: Problems after upgrading to 14.04 (only background and pointer after login) except for reinstalling nvidia, since then I would be back at square one with suspend not working. When I try to launch system settings through the terminal, I get: simon@simon-X681X:~$ unity-control-center libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast (unity-control-center:2806): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'unity-control-center' received an X Window System error. • OpenGL ES Shader help (Blending)

  Earlier I required assistance getting to grips with how to retain the alpha channel of a transparent texture in my colourised texture shader program. Whilst playing with that first version of my program (before obtaining the solution to my first requirement), I managed to enable transparency for the whole texture (effectively blending via GLSL), and I quite liked this, and I would now like to know if and how it is possible to retain this blending effect, on top of the existing output without affecting the original alpha channel - as I don't know how to input this transparency via the parameter that is already being provided with the textures alpha channel. A basic example of the blending program I am referring to (minus any other functionality) is as follows... varying vec2 texCoord; uniform sampler2D texSampler; void main() { gl_FragColor = vec4(texture2D(texSampler,texCoord).xyz,0.5); } Where 0.5 is the transparency (blending effect) of the whole texture.   I can´t verify my site on Google. I´ve done this several times for several sites, all inside the same host. I´ve tried the HTML tag method, HTML upload, Domain Name provider (I canp´t find the options that Google tell me that I should activate...), and Google Analytics. I always get this response: Verification failed for http://www.mysite.com/ using the Google Analytics method (1 minute ago). Your verification file returns a status of 403 (Forbidden) instead of 200 (OK).
