• Is embedded programming closer to electrical engineering or software development?

  I am being approached with a job for writing embedded C on micro controllers. At first I would have thought that embedding programming is to low on the software stack for me, but maybe I am thinking about it wrong. Normally I would have shrugged off an opportunity to write embedded code, as I don't consider myself an electrical engineer. Is this a bad assumption? Am I able to write interesting and useful software for embedded systems, or will I kick myself for dropping too low on the software stack? I went to school for computer science and really enjoyed writing a compiler, managing concurrent algorithms, designing data structures, and developing frameworks. However, I am currently employed as a Flex developer, which doesn't scream the interesting things I just described. (I currently deal with issues like: "this check box needs to be 4 pixels to the left" and "this date is formatted wrong".) I appreciate everyone's input. I know I have to make the decision for myself, I just would like some clarification on what it means to be a embedded programmer, and if it fits what I find to be interesting.

• MS Marketing Strategy

  I found this week’s Windows Phone 8 event interesting.  Not just because it looks like some fantastic new features in the new OS but because of the wait for release.  If I were a Nokia shareholder (which I am not) I’d be very unhappy with MS announcing that Windows Phone 8 will NOT work with current hardware.  So, there are some very nice Lumia devices that are now end-of-life that have arrived relatively recently at carriers and retailers. I understand that MS needs to demonstrate progress against iOS and Android and that there is some Windows 8 tie-in that they are trying to capitalize (and MS IS still all about Windows).  However, it’s a bit of a kick to partners that have invested in the platform with pretty decent devices (Samsung, HTC and of course Nokia). Personally, I’m still using a Samsung Foucs.  I was seriously considering upgrading to a Lumia 900 (we just got Lync mobile available) but will now wait it out until new devices arrive with Windows 8.  If MS had waited to announce, I would happily have upgraded to the Lumia and when I found out it couldn’t be upgraded then that would be a gamble I took and lost and I’d live with it.  Now, however, I can see the future and know that waiting is the better option for me so that is 1 sale Nokia will miss out on.  Based on some chats I’ve seen on mobile forums I’m certainly far from the only one. • Failed 11.10 to 12.04 upgrade and drove me crazy!

  Please help me with this! I first tried to upgrade my Ubuntu server from 11.10 to 12.04 thru Upgrade Manager, but never succeeded! Then I tried upgrading thru terminal, which took me ~4 hours as I was warned. When I restarted my computer, my login GUI did not show up at all! (Panic I was!) But when I switched to tty6 and it seemed the upgrade has finished, at least partially and got message Ubuntu 12.04LTS and telling me 12.10 is available. There are bunch of unmet dependencies...."apt-get install -f" may resolve the problem. Then I tried: sudo apt-get -f install, did not succeed! Also I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I got bunch of error message too long to list here. Then I tried: sudo do-release-upgrade still bunch of error message there! There seems a lot trouble with the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 for me. Did I miss anything? Anyway, can I ask how I can get the gnome login GUI back? Thanks a lot! Yifang

• handling multiple interviews / offers [closed]

  What's the best way to handle a situation where you have, or expect to have multiple offers? The ideal situation is that your several offers come in about the same time, and you make a choice. this is not how it happens though. You may have an offer, and several near-final interviews lined up for the following days or weeks. One way to handle it would be to ask for a longer time to decide on the first offers you receive. 2 weeks? This gives time to rush the rest of the things you have going through to an end. i question whether asking for 2 weeks to decide is reasonable though. My guess is that an employer would see through that and force your hand. Another way to handle it would be to accept the first offer, and ask for a reasonable period before your start date, then simply "quit" the first position before you ever start if something better comes along. On one hand, employment is at-will, and employers exercise this fact regularly. On the other hand, it seems morally the wrong thing, and has the potential to burn some bridges. And of course the last option is to simply evaluate each offer in isolation, and accept or reject within the given time frame. any thoughts?

• An online version of ClearTrace

  When I visit clients for the first time and conduct a performance review I introduce them to ClearTrace. It’s still the best way I know to identify exactly which queries are consuming the most resources.  The downside is that it needs to be downloaded and create a database to store the results.  I finally decided it would be easier if I could just upload a trace immediately. You can find the online version of ClearTrace at TraceTune.com.  It provides a simple way to upload a trace file and see exactly which stored procedures or SQL statements consume the most CPU and disk.   This is still a work in progress as I try to determine exactly which features from ClearTrace are important.  I’ve also limited the file upload to 10MB in this beta release.  That might not sound like much but I get over 20,000 events using this stored procedure to generate the trace. If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday, I’d suggest a little performance tuning.  Generating 10MB of trace data doesn’t take long at all and in a short time you’ll see exactly which SQL statements you need to tune first.

• Developer with 4 years experience with Java/C++. How to move into web programming? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Tips for switching jobs and moving into web based programming? I graduated in 2006 with a computer science degree and got solid grades (3.5 overall 3.8 in my major) For the past 4.5 years I've been working as a Software Engineer doing primarily rich client development. Most of my experience is with Java, Swing and C++. I've done a lot of network programming and I have acquired some skill working & debugging in distributed environments. I would like to switch jobs and move into a role where I can get exposure to some new technologies and frameworks. I would like to move into a more web development role but I find my lack of web development experience is hurting me. 90% of the jobs I see advertised are looking for one of two skill sets: 1) Stereotypical server side Java web developer. Experience with Spring, Hibernate, J2EE, etc. 2) Stereotypical front end web developer. Experience with Javascript, jQuery, HTML5, GWT, CSS, etc I find most of these companies are looking really specifically for this experience and they are not willing to take on good programmers/ CS fundamental guys who lack experience with this stuff. I would love to get a job doing stuff like this, but have my skills become out of date and unmarketable? Any opinions on ways to sell myself to help get a new position?

• Choosing the Database Solution for Large Data Application

  I have been tasked to write an application that will be a combination of document and inventory management in VB.net which will be used to store document images in TIFF, PDF, XPS, TXT, DOC, PPT and so on as binary data that can be retrieved for viewing, printing, and possible OCR to be searchable as well along with meta data such as sender, recipient, type of document, date, source, etc. So the table would probably be something like: DOC_NAME, DOC_DATE, NOTES, ... DOC_BINARY (where the actual document will be put inside) What my concern is finding a database solution that will not become unstable due to size restrictions, records limitations and performance. Some of the options are MS_SQL, SQL Express, SQLite, mySQL, and Access. Now I can pretty much eliminate Access right off the bat as it is just too limiting and not scalable. I can further eliminate SQL Express because of the 2 GB limit and again scalability. So that leaves me with MS_SQL, SQLite and mySQL (although if anyone has other options they think would be good as well, please feel free to share them, by no means am I set on these only). So this brings me to what you guys think is the best option for what I have described. The goal is that the data is all in one place (a single file) that will make backup and portability easier. For small volume usage, pretty much any solution will hold for a while, but my goal is to think ahead and make sure its able to withstand heavy large volume usage as well. Another consideration is also the interoperability with .NET and stability of such code to avoid errors and memory leaks. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

• DVD wont mount Ubuntu 12.04

  I can't seem to be able to mount my optical drive. I have tried numerous solutions from this site with no results. I am not able to see the device inside the file browser either. There is a DVD in the drive. I am running 12.04 on an HP g60-235dx portable. I have a link below to the specs. I will also list what I have tried (that I can find back right now.) I know the drive is functioning, because just before Windows 7 crashed and my MBR went fubar I was watching movies just fine. I am fairly new to linux, so don't assume I know anything. • Tips on how to notify a user of new features in your game (Android)

  I have noticed a problem when releasing new features for a game that I wrote for Android and published on Google Play Store. Because my game is "stage-based" - and not a game like Hay Day, for example, where users will just go into the game every day since it can't really be finished - my users are not aware of new features that I release for the game. For example, if I publish a new version of my game and it contains a couple new stages, most of their devices will just auto-update the game and they don't even notice this and think to check out what's new. So this is why an approach like popping open a dialog that showcases the new feature(s) when they open the game for the first time after the update was done is not really sufficient. I am looking for some tips on an approach that will draw my users back into the game and then they could read more detail about new features on such a dialog. I was thinking of something like a notification that tells them to check out the new features after an update is done but I am not sure if this is a good idea. Any suggestions to help me solve this problem would be awesome.

• Which version management design methodology to be used in a Dependent System nodes?

  This is my first question so please indicate if my question is too vague and not understandable. My question is more related to High Level Design. We have a system (specifically an ATCA Chassis) configured in a Star Topology, having Master Node (MN) and other sub-ordinate nodes(SN). All nodes are connected via Ethernet and shall run on Linux OS with other proprietary applications. I have to build a recovery Framework Design so that any software entity, whether its Linux, Ramdisk or application can be rollback to previous good versions if something bad happens. Thus I think of maintaining a State Version Matrix over MN, where each State(1,2....n) represents Good Kernel, Ramdisk and application versions for each SN. It may happen that one SN version can dependent on other SN's version. Please see following diagram:- So I am in dilemma whether to use Package Management Methodology used by Debian Distributions (Like Ubuntu) or GIT repository methodology; in order to do a Rollback to previous good versions on either one SN or on all the dependent SNs. The method should also be easier for upgrading SNs along with MNs. Some of the features which I am trying to achieve:- 1) Upgrade of even single software entity is achievable without hindering others. 2) Dependency checks must be done before applying rollback or upgrade on each of the SN 3) User Prompt should be given in case dependency fails.If User still go for rollback, all the SNs should get notification to rollback there own releases (if required). 4) The binaries should be distributed on SNs accordingly so that recovery process is faster; rather fetching every time from MN. 5) Release Patches from developer for bug fixes, feature enhancement can be applied on running system. 6) Each version can be easily tracked and distinguishable. • Updating, etc., automatically

  Is there a way to set up Ubuntu 12.04 (or earlier versions) so that all recommended updates are done automatically, say once a week? When I say automatically, I mean no password entry or user intervention required. This sounds like a stupid request, so let me tell why I'm asking. My grandfather knows nothing about computers; he uses his solely to read Yahoo! mail. I want to get rid of his clunky, spyware-ridden Windows XP and install Ubuntu. I want to set it up so when he turns the computer on, after a couple minutes, voila!, Yahoo! mail, already signed in, ready to go. The problem is I don't want to have to go over there every week or so and make sure everything is up-to-date, he hasn't accidentally installed any spyware, etc. So can this be done? Is this the best way to set things up for my grandfather? Are there other things I should be worried about when it comes to keeping things hassle-free for him? Please don't post anything like "why not teach him how to... blah blah blah". My grandfather is 80 years old and has made it clear email is the only thing he will ever use a computer for! Thanks!

• Dual displays not working - NVidia - Ubuntu 12.04 - Second Monitor - Two Screens

  Graphics Card: NVidia 460 GTX. Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) I have one DVI monitor, an old Dell LCD from 2005, and one VGA monitor, an Asus ML238H from 2010 whose HDMI port broke. The Asus is plugged into my graphics card's primary monitor slot and is the better monitor even though it is VGA but my computer defaults to the Dell. This happens when I boot as well; the loading screens, the motherboard brand image, etc. are all displayed on the Dell monitor until Windows loads. Then both monitors work. The same thing happened when I booted up Ubuntu 12.04 but I did not see the second monitor when the log-in screen popped up, nor did I when I logged in. I went to System Settings/Displays and my Asus monitor is not an option. I clicked Detect Displays and the Asus is not detected. I looked at the other questions regarding NVIDIA drivers and recalled my problems with Ubuntu a few years ago and decided to check the driver. I went to Additional Drivers to install the proprietary driver and it looks like it's installed and active but I'm still having this problem. There is another driver option, the post-release NVIDIA driver, but that does not fix the problem either. Also, under System Details/Graphics the graphics device is listed as Unknown, which might indicate that it is using an open source generic driver and not the proprietary NVidia driver. But under Additional Drivers it says that I am using the NVidia driver. Any help is appreciated.

• CUDA 4.1 Update

  I'm currently working on porting a particle system to update on the GPU via the use of CUDA. With CUDA, I've already passed over the required data I need to the GPU and allocated and copied the date via the host. When I build the project, it all runs fine, but when I run it, the project says I need to allocate my h_position pointer. This pointer is my host pointer and is meant to hold the data. I know I need to pass in the current particle position to the required cudaMemcpy call and they are currently stored in a list with a for loop being created and interated for each particle calling the following line of code: m_particleList[i].positionY = m_particleList[i].positionY - (m_particleList[i].velocity * frameTime * 0.001f); My current host side cuda code looks like this: float* h_position; // Your host pointer. I had originally thought it would be a simple case of changing the h_position variable in the cudaMemcpy to m_particleList[i] but then I get the following error: no suitable conversion function from "ParticleSystemClass::ParticleType" to "const void *" exists I've probably messed up somewhere, but could someone please help fix the issues I'm facing. Everything else seems to running fine, it's just when I try to run the program that certain things hit the fan.

• Files in /home deleted

  In the most specific, unemotional terms: Reinstalled os, using 11.10(1 month after release to skip initial issues that usually crop up). Configured system to my specifications(just ways of organizing config files, etc). Log out Log back in after after an hour or so...to find my home directory obliterated and just a few skeleton files existing. think oh well, try again (this has happened before with an install for reasons I've never been able to pinpoint, usually around install time with some sort of update but its never been a major recurring issue) same thing happens I thought something was awry, so I reinstalled again (another 20 minutes, meh) Set up system, arranged home directory a bit differently thinking maybe I tread on something I shouldn't have. log out, come back --- the same thing. Most of the directories I added were deleted (e.g. .xmonad which links to xmonad.hs in my portable config directory) tl;dr every change I make in my home directory gets deleted. The emotional part: UNACCEPTABLE. I need to configure my system the way I want, not get punched in the face everytime I make a change. I'll willingly fill in details as needed, this was just a start to see if anyone can help, I've found no trace of this issue in a search.

• Web Applications Desktop Integrator (WebADI) Feature for Install Base Mass Update in 12.1.3

  Purpose The integration of WebADI technology with the Install Base Mass Update function is designed to make creation and update of bulk item instances much easier than in the past. What is it? WebADI is an Excel-based desktop application where users can download an Excel template with item instances pre-populated based on search criteria.  Users can create and update item instances in the Excel sheet and finally upload the Excel data using an "upload" option available in the Excel menu. On upload, the modified data will bulk upload to interface tables which are processed by an asynchronous concurrent program that users can monitor for the uploaded results. • Crackling sound from microphone recently, in 13.04

  I use 13.04 since the release and I use Skype which was working well. But recently I've had remarks saying my voice was "crackling", even if the voice from my interlocutor was perfect. Making a test with Audacity and Cheese, I've seen that every recorded sound (with the front microphone of my laptop or a jack microphone) was crackling. It's not really like saturating, the sound has a lot of annoying pops. I've tried to check the settings, they were still on PulseAudio. I've even tried the extreme solution : re-installing Ubuntu (because initially it was working)… with the same problem. If I boot on Windows (dual-boot) I have no problem (so it's not physical). If anyone could help :) My laptop is a HP dv6-6165sf. The sound card is a "IDT 92HD81B1X5" (with BeatsAudio). Thanks a lot ! New tests - july 6th Hi again, I've tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa with these three settings : load-module module-udev-detect use_ucm=0 tsched=0 load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0 load-module module-udev-detect use_ucm=0 The three of them don't change anything, except the last one (which was by default) which makes Audacity record without any crackling sound. But in Skype, Cheese and Kazam, the sound is crackling… I've installed again Ubuntu 13.04 (from scratch, deleting everything from /home), and I've updated it. The microphone is still cracking.   I have problem with nvidia graphics driver opensource and proprietary ! Can't change resolution on 3d games and there's a bug there are no kernel sources installed and thus jockey can't install proprietary drivers. I can't change resolution while on games fullscreen. I tried to install proprietary driver and i couldn't plus i couldn't login to ubuntu it showed only the desktop photo no dash no nothing. -tried to install kernel sources and blacklist+remove Nouveau drivers and then installed the proprietary drivers i hope succesfully. -The problem is the same i can't change resolution on 3d games while on fullscreen. I've installed the sources and be able to install the proprietary nvidia drivers but the problem remains, look what i got in the output of a 3d game exited while i tried to change resolution: X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 150 (XFree86-VidModeExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 10 (XF86VidModeSwitchToMode) Value in failed request: 0x25b Serial number of failed request: 497 Current serial number in output stream: 499 I'm giving you more details about my system: i have an nvidia geforce gts 250 , 3,4 ghz quadcore amd phenom2 , 8gbytes of ram.
