• How do I debug my emacs crash on Windows?

  I use emacs on windows (at work) and on linux (at home). On the windows machine, I'm using emacs 23.1 (from here: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/windows/emacs-23.1-bin-i386.zip). It just crashed right now. Recently, I've taken a healthy interest in debugging on windows (using WinDbg), so I really want to try my hand at this ready-made crash :) Can someone tell me where (or if at all) I can get the symbol files (.pdb) for emacs for windows? On linux, I compile my emacs from source so symbols aren't really a problem...

• apache on windows virtual directory config help

  I'm running Apache on Windows XP via Xampplite, and could use help configuring my virtual directory. Here's what I'm hoping to do on my dev box: I want my source files to live outside of the xampp htdocs dir on my local machine I can access the project at http://myproject others on my local network can access the project at my.ip.address/myproject keep localhost pointing to the xampp's htdocs folder so I can easily add other projects. I've got 1 & 2 working by editing the windows hosts file, and adding a virtual directory in xampp's apache\conf\extra\httpd-vhosts.conf file. I don't immediately see how to do 3 without messing up 4.

• Recommend a local LDAP store for development

  Our project uses an LDAP repository for storing users. In production this will be Active Directory. For development, we seem to have a couple of options: Install an AD LDS instance that everyone uses Install an AD LDS instance on every developer machine We're trying to keep the 'F5' experience as lightweight as possible, so installing things or relying on a central AD store aren't my favorite ideas. There are other LDAP servers, like Open LDAP. I was hoping there might be an LDAP server that simply talks to an XML file. This would allow us to store the XML file in source control and have something that is fast and works. Our nightly builds would still use AD to pick up any differences, but the hope is since we're using LDAP it should Just Work. Can you recommend an LDAP implementation that works well for zero-config shared-nothing development?

• How do I play a video through .net in windows 7

  I had setup an app to play a video using the library suggested here this worked great for me for a long time until my machine was upgraded. In windows 7 I get the following exception that I'd never seen under XP: `System.BadImageFormatException: is not a valid Win32 application. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700C1) at MainApp.Controls.MediaControl.StopVideo() at System.Windows.Forms.Form.WmClose(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)` I've installed the June 2010 DirectX SDK and I'm still getting this error. Is there a different library I should be using or some setting that needs to be changed?

• Making an asynchronous interface appear synchronous to mod_python users

  I have a Python-driven web interface powered by Apache 2.2 with mod_python and Python 2.4. I need to make an asynchronous process appear synchronous to users of this web interface. When users access one module on this website: An external SOAP interface will be contacted with a unique identifier and will respond with a number N The external interface will respond asynchronously by contacting a SOAP server on my machine between 1 and 10 times (the number N tells us how many responses we will receive) I need to somehow aggregate these responses and pass them to the original module which will display the information back to the user. The goal is to make the process appear synchronous to the user. What is the best way to handle this synchronization issue? Is this something Twisted would be well-suited for? I am not restricting myself to Python for the solution, though it is preferred because everything else on the server is in Python. I prefer a solution that is both scalable and will take a minimal amount of programming time (though I understand that these attributes are somewhat at odds).

• Any tips of how to handle hierarchial trees in relational model?

  Hello all. I have a tree structure that can be n-levels deep, without restriction. That means that each node can have another n nodes. What is the best way to retrieve a tree like that without issuing thousands of queries to the database? I looked at a few other models, like flat table model, Preorder Tree Traversal Algorithm, and so. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions of how to implement a efficient tree model? My objective in the real end is to have one or two queries that would spit the whole tree for me. With enough processing i can display the tree in dot net, but that would be in client machine, so, not much of a big deal. Thanks for the attention

  I'm displaying a PNG with a transparent background that looks good in Windows 7, but then I run my app in XP Mode or remote desktop to a Windows XP machine and the PNG looks incorrect. I noticed that if I disable "Integration Mode" or run the app on XP without remote desktop, the image looks fine. How do I get DrawImage to render the PNG correctly in XP Mode or remote desktop? When I run that binary in 64 bit intel machine , the following error is displayed "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.   I have an app that works fine on 32-bit systems, but fails on XP 64 bit systems. I've tracked it down to the connection string defined in my app.config thus: <connectionStrings> <clear/> <add name="IFDSConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=fdsdata;Initial Catalog=IFDS; Trusted_Connection=true;Connect Timeout=0" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> When I try to reference it in code, I find that the ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings collection only contains the LocalSqlServer connection string from the machine.config file and not my custom string. Another oddity is that it works fine when I run the app out of Visual Studio. It is only when I run out of the release folder that the connection string does not get defined. The application's .exe.config file is there in the release folder along with the .exe file and is up to date.

  Is there a way of setting or overriding the default DateTime format for an entire application. I am writing an app in C# .Net MVC 1.0 and use alot of generics and reflection. Would be much simpler if I could override the default DateTime.ToString() format to be "dd-MMM-yyyy". I do not want this format to change when the site is run on a different machine. Edit - Just to clarify I mean specifically calling the ToString, not some other extension function, this is because of the reflection / generated code. Would be easier to just change the ToString output.

  How do I prevent a race condition WITHOUT locking or using mutexes/semaphors in C++? I'm dealing with a nested for loop in which I will be setting a value in an array: for (int i = 0; i < m; ++i) for (int j = 0; j < n; ++j) for (int k = 0; k < o; ++k) array[k] += foo(...); More or less, I want to deal with this so that I can ensure different threads running at the same time don't write to array[k] at the same time. Any suggestions on how to approach this? Edit: I am running on a Linux machine and I also have to use the Intel compiler. I will be using "icc" instead of "gcc" to compile the code.

  I've got a script that pulls information from an Excel(Mac Excel'04) spreadsheet, and processes it through a local database. My problem(which is temporary, pending a dedicated scripting machine w/ Excel '08) is when I need to work on another spreadsheet in Excel. I want to ensure that the AppleScript continues reading data from the correct spreadsheet. Is there a way to pass reference to the specific Excel file in AppleScript, as opposed to just telling the Application in general? Or possibly just referencing the spreadsheet without having to have it open ... ?

• How to figure out why ssh session does not exit sometimes?

  I have a C++ application that uses ssh to summon a connection to the server. I find that sometimes the ssh session is left lying around long after the command to summon the server has exited. Looking at the Centos4 man page for ssh I see the following: The session terminates when the command or shell on the remote machine exits and all X11 and TCP/IP connections have been closed. The exit status of the remote program is returned as the exit status of ssh. I see that the command has exited, so I imagine not all the X11 and TCP/IP connections have been closed. How can I figure out which of these ssh is waiting for so that I can fix my summon command's C++ application to clean up whatever is being left behind that keeps the ssh open. I wonder why this failure only occurs some of the time and not on every invocation? It seems to occur approximately 50% of the time. What could my C++ application be leaving around to trigger this?

• Are there any standard one-click install/lauch mechanisms for the web?

  The reason I ask is mostly due to how Google Chrome installation works once you click the "Accept and install" button from Firefox. After you click the installation is started directly and when it's completed Chrome itself starts up. Firefox does not show any "Save" or "Confirm" dialogs after you click the Install button (on Chrome install web page). Now, is this standard behaviour? Or might it be due to having an old version of Chrome already on the computer (Note: The new version was still installed from Firefox). Seems a bit risky to me, all you have to do is fool the user to click something and then you can do whatever you want on his machine, or? Personally I thought things like this only worked with IE/ActiveX.

  I just took my first baby step today into real scientific computing today when I was shown a data set where the smallest file is 48000 fields by 1600 rows (haplotypes for several people, for chromosome 22). And this is considered tiny. I write Python, so I've spent the last few hours reading about HDF5, and Numpy, and PyTable, but I still feel like I'm not really grokking what a terabyte-sized data set actually means for me as a programmer. For example, someone pointed out that with larger data sets, it becomes impossible to read the whole thing into memory, not because the machine has insufficient RAM, but because the architecture has insufficient address space! It blew my mind. What other assumptions have I been relying in the classroom that just don't work with input this big? What kinds of things do I need to start doing or thinking about differently? (This doesn't have to be Python specific.)

  Hi experts, I am trying to make a SSL connection to a web site. Each time I enter the https:// address and press enter, the IE8 prompts me to select the Certificate (Client Certificate) to send to the server. I got 2 certificates to choose from. And they are stored in the IE8 - Internet Options - Content - Certificates - Personal. Since my server and client are the same machine, I want to use a single certificate for both server and client. And this certificate is a IIS generated self signed certificate. I do the following steps: 1- Generate a self-signed-cert in IIS; 2- Bind my site to https and choose the above self-signed-cert 3- Import the self-signed-cert at the IE8 - Internet Options - Content - Certificates - Personal. Then I use the https link to access my page, it is still prompts me to choose a certificate. But I cannot see my newly imported self-signed-cert. Why?

  I need to automate the process of downloading and installing an exe file abc.exe from say 'http://10.34.45.21:8080/cruisecontrol/artifacts/xxx_trunk_nightly_build/xxx/test/' I mean now i have to manually goto ''http://10.34.45.21:8080/cruisecontrol' then click on each folder before i finally click on the abc.exe file. Then it downloads the exe on my machine. Then i have to double click on the exe to install it.   I usually store the Java applications and JAR files that I download from the Web in the ~/Java folder on my computer (an OS X machine). I have been doing this since the days when I was a Windows user. However I think in UNIX based systems user local apps are conventionally stored in another directory. I have a feeling that this directory should either be /usr/local/, /usr/local/USERNAME, /opt/local, or /opt/local/USERNAME but I am not sure. Any ideas which directory can I use for this purpose? Please note that, I am talking about archive files that I download from the Web, unpack and use locally and not programs that have installation scripts or MacPorts, etc.

  I'm trying to compile one project with MSVC 2010, compilation is ok, but when I try to run the app, it gives me CRT not initialized error. It is a console application, so I tried to specify mainCRTStartup as Entry Point, but it didn't help. In the same solution there are other projects, and they don't have such a problem. • ASP.NET, Visual Studio and Subversion - how to integrate?

  I use AnkhSVN and Visual Studio 2005 and 2008. Now, one thing that bugs me is that Ankh does not really work with ASP.NET sites. I cannot add them properly to a repository and it won't detect changes, especially because the site is on a remote server accessed through Frontpage Extensions (File = Open Site). What are the alternatives? Does a better plug-in exist? Manually downloading the files through FTP and using TortoiseSVN or svn.exe is not really the level of integration I want :) I want to stay within the Visual Studio IDE when possible. Also, I do not control the remote Server, so I can not install anything on it, which means the whole change tracking/comparison to repository has to be done on my machine.
