• Very poor read performance compared to write performance on md(raid1) / crypt(luks) / lvm

  I'm experiencing very poor read performance over raid1/crypt/lvm. In the same time, write speeds are about 2x+ faster on the same setup. On another raid1 setup on the same machine I get normal read speeds (maybe because I'm not using cryptsetup). OS related disks: sda + sdb. I have raid1 configuration with two disks, both are in place. I'm using LVM over the RAID. No encryption. Both disks are WD Green, 5400 rpm. IO test results on this raid1: dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/output.img3 bs=8k count=256k conv=fsync - 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 22.3392 s, 96.1 MB/s sync echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches dd if=/tmp/output.img3 of=/dev/null bs=8k - 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 15.9 s, 135 MB/s And here is the problematic setup (on the same machine). Currently I have only one sdc (WD Green, 5400rpm) configured in software raid1 + crypt (luks, serpent-xts-plain) + lvm. Tomorrow I will attach another disk (sdd) to complete this two-disk raid1 setup. IO tests results on this raid1: dd if=/dev/zero of=output.img3 bs=8k count=256k conv=fsync 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 17.7235 s, 121 MB/s sync echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches dd if=output.img3 of=/dev/null bs=8k 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 36.2454 s, 59.2 MB/s We can see that the read performance is very very bad (59MB/s compared to 135MB/s when using no encryption). Nothing is using the disks during benchmark. I can confirm this because I checked with iostat and dstat. Details on the hardware: disks: all are WD green, 5400rpm, 64mb cache. cpu: FX-8350 at stock speed ram: 4x4GB at 1066Mhz. Details on the software: OS: Debian Wheezy 7, amd64 mdadm: v3.2.5 - 18th May 2012 LVM version: 2.02.95(2) (2012-03-06) LVM Library version: 1.02.74 (2012-03-06) LVM Driver version: 4.22.0 cryptsetup: 1.4.3 Here is how I configured the slow raid1+crypt+lvm setup: parted /dev/sdc mklabel gpt type: ext4 start: 2048s end: -1 Now the raid, crypt and the lvm configuration: mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=1 --raid-disks=2 missing /dev/sdc cryptsetup --cipher serpent-xts-plain luksFormat /dev/md1 cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/md1 md1_crypt vgcreate vg_sql /dev/mapper/md1_crypt lvcreate -l 100%VG vg_sql -n lv_sql mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/vg_sql-lv-sql mount /dev/mapper/vg_sql-lv_sql /sql So guys, can you help me identify the reason and fix it? It has to be something with the cryptsetup as there is no such read slowdown on the other setup (sda+sdb) where no encryption is present. But I have no idea what to do. Thanks!

• Are animated GIFs supported in Google Chrome?

  I have recently been testing a website and found animated gif images that seem to show fine in IE and Firefox but in Google Chrome they only show briefly and then dissapear! This happens if I view the image on the page or view the file directly. Are there any reported problems in displaying GIFs in Chrome, or is it just being fussy? There seemed to have been some problems in older versions of Chrome, but it's hard to believe something as simple as this wouldn't have been fixed by now. The version of Google Chrome I am using is: 4.1.249.1021 Not sure if this is relevant, but some info about the image: Width: 216 pixels Height: 36 pixels Horizontal resolution: 96dpi Vertical resolution: 96dpi Bit Depth: 32 Frame Count: 3 EDIT: Seems to be a problem relating to the latest beta version of Chrome, as it works fine in 4.0.249

  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. • Disable DirectDraw, but still have Direct3D?

  I have a Windows XP SP3 machine, with up-to-date patches. It has DirectX 9.0c, version number 4.09.00.0904. Can I disable DirectDraw, but have Direct3D still active? I read the Wikipedia articles about DirectDraw and Direct3D, but do not know if I understand them correctly: That is, it contains many commands for 3D rendering; however, since version 8, Direct3D has superseded the old DirectDraw framework and also taken responsibility for the rendering of 2D graphics. Does that mean DirectDraw is now a part of Direct3D? Because I cannot disable DirectDraw without disabling Direct3D, but it works the other way around.

• Ubuntu xrandr rotate issue

  I've just bought a second monitor for my PC which happens to be a pivot monitor. I've already read lots of forums related to my problem but haven't come across a solution - I have the same symptoms as dozens of posts but no matter whatever I try it just doesn't work. I've already changed the xorg.conf file and added in the device section just under Driver "nvidia" the following for my second monitor: Option "RandRRotation" "on" When I save and reboot I try to rotate my screen with the nvidia X server settings by choosing the second monitor and clicking either "left" or "right" for the rotation. It immediately exits the nvidia settings window and does nothing. I tried within the terminal by typing: xrandr -o right I get the following error: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I actually manage to rotate it with Option "Rotate" "CCW" instead of "RandRRotation". The problem with this solution is that you get the second monitor in the right position, but any window you open on that screen is practically unchangeable. You can't change the size nor move it, making it useless for reading PDFs, which is the main reason why I bought this second screen to help me write my thesis. • Curios: What makes CPUs better than others? [closed]

  I have been wondering about this for a long while now and was hoping someone here could answer it pretty easily. If I was looking for the most powerful CPU what should I really be looking at? There are so many different parameters of a CPU and I am wanting to know what each thing does and what really matters. Basically this: What is the deal with cores? If I take using optimized applications out of the mix would it theoretically better to get quad core 1.0GHz CPU or a 1 core 4 GHz CPU? Also, what is the difference between maybe an Sandy Bridge CPU versus an Ivy Bridge CPU? If they both were had the same clock speed and number of cores would the Ivy Bridge perform better? Does an older Xeon with an equal clock speed and number of cores to a new i7 really perform worse/slower? Does size matter? Why would I go with a 22nm CPU over a 32nm when the size difference is so trivial? What about the cache? When does the cache come into play with performance?

  I have a cPanel installed on a CentOS server and it includes an old version of Mysql. Has anyone tried upgrading Mysql to 5.5 on a cPanel managed server? If so, I would really like some guidance. I read, on the cPanel forum, that it's not supported and one user complained, after manually upgrading his version of Mysql, cPanel automatically removed it, but that was a long time ago. Also, I'm a newbie to Linux, so please forgive any dumb questions. Help... Thanks.

• Tab title is wrong with ssh/screen on osx

  I am doing ssh -t host screen -D -RR in OS X (10.9) terminal tabs. My ~/.screenrc is identical on all remote hosts and contain the following line: hardstatus string "%H(%n:%t)$USER %h" My ~/.bashrc is also identical on all hosts. When I login to host host_u (Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS) running Screen version 4.00.03jw4 (FAU) 2-May-06, the tab title on the OS X terminal is host_u(1:bash)sds ~, as expected. When I login to host host_c (CentOS release 6.3 (Final)) running Screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06, the tab title on the OS X terminal is ~/FooBar (which is the local OS X directory from which I ran the ssh/screen command. Problem: the hardstatus line does not work on host_c.

• Western Digital My Book World drops off network

  Most of my storage in my house relies on a WD My Book World Edition 500GB network drive. I threw out the vendor crapware they give you to access it (a trial version of Mionet) after it starting nagging me to upgrade, and set it up as a standard network drive using Window's Map Network Drive. However, since then, it has been dropping off the network after 30 minutes of non-usage. The only way to get it back on is to switch it off and on again at the plug socket. Does anyone know what is causing this, and hopefully how to fix it? EDIT: it's the original "blue rings" version with the latest firmware.

  Hi, When you download files from Google Code now (example), in addition to the text version of the SHA1 hash, it includes a QR code of it. The device that the file was downloaded to is the one that has to hash the file. But, if it can download the file (ie, has access to the webpage), it also has access to the text version of the hash, so the QR code seems completely useless—and more work to decode when the raw text is available. How would reading the hash into a mobile phone allow you to verify the file you download to the computer? Or if you download the file to the phone, how would you use the phone to take a picture of the QR code displayed on the webpage on its own screen? Does anyone know what the point to the QR code is or how you would use it to verify the downloaded file (I don’t mean QR codes in general, but specifically in this context).

The issue manifestes itself as a large number of processes in the Worker Process queue. Number of current connections to the website display 500 when this issue occurs. I dont think i have seen concurrent connections over 500 without this issue occurring. Web application slows as the request block. Refreshing the app pool resolves for a while (as expected) as the load is spread between the two pools. Application pool in question FIXED REQUEST have been set to refresh on 50000. Thank you for any help. Scott quick edit to say hmm, my develeopers are telling me the project was built with .net 3.5 framework. Looking at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5 there does not appear to be a ASPNET.CONFIG or a MACHINE.CONFIG .... is there a 3.5 equivalent ? after a little searching apparenetly 3.5 uses the 2.0 framework files that 3.5 is missing. So back to the original question , where is my bottleneck ?

• iTunes Title Bar is Equal to the Location of the Library file?

  I have never been able to get a clear answer on why the latest edition of iTunes does this. I have my entire iTunes library located in C:\itunes\ and the library data files inside C:\itunes\!library_info for backup purposes. However when version 9 of iTunes came out it went from having iTunes as the title, to !library_info. Anyway to get around this without moving my data files away? Annoying "feature" if that is what it is. Again Apple support and forums were of no help to me. Anyone have insight on this? • MySQL taking a long time to start

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 with MySQL installed and every time I reboot the server the MySQL Service doesn't start right away. A look into the Windows Eventlog shows that the MySQL Service was hung at startup. Looking at the Services.msc console shows the service state at Starting... Eventually, like 10 minutes, the MySQL Service actually finishes the startup process and the database becomes available for my Wordpress server... I looked at the MySQL .err files and didn't find anything that would indicate a delay in the statup process... Can anyone suggest a way to determine what is causing the delay, and more importantly, how to prevent the delay in the MySQL Startup? • "Snapping" when in RDP

  I am using mstsc.exe version 6.0 (Remote Desktop non-Metro version) from an XP machine and cannot get Windows 8 snapping to work. I can drag a metro app window to the left or right, but it doesn't stick, it just bounces back to full screen. The snap bars do not appear. The client PC has two monitors, each with a resolution of 1280x1024. While mstsc.exe 6.0 does have an option to use both monitors simultaneously in normal settings, I am launching it with spanning enabled: mstsc.exe /span So the effective resolution in the session is 2560x1024. Is there a trick to getting this to work over RDP?

• Hardware, network infrastructure for runnng gaming server nd on VirtualGL

  Foud nice project VirtualGL (http://www.virtualgl.org/). Tried to run 3D fames (EVE Online, Prototype) on server and display the output on thin client using 100Mbps network. Server: Gentoo Linux on AMD Phoenom II x6 3.4Gz, 8GB RAM, 2x NVIDIA 9800 GTX in single session with display resulution 1024x768 on client. Performance is very promising. Going to increase network speed to 1Gbps (using either Ethernet or Fiber) and run 5-6 clients simultenously. My questions are: a) what would be better for network - 1Gbps Ethernet or Fiber (clients are distributed in max 20m around server)? Is that a must to use managed switch for better network performance? b) Should I increase number of video cards to put in SLI on server (going to use Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 which has 6 PCIExpress slots [2 x4, 2 x8 and 2 x16]). Will it impact performance significantly. If I need to increase the number of video cards - what would be better - put 2 banks of video cards with 3 in bank using SLI, or 3 banks with 2 in the bank? Would linux recognize that and properly use all banks of video cards? c) any suggestions on good thin clients supporting 1920x1080 HDMI video and 1Gbps network I understand that my questions can't be answered clearly (unless someone already managed to use this kind of stuff ;)) although any suggestions would be very helpful.

• How to debug why w3wp.exe crashes randomly?

  On the main production server, the IIS worker process crashes sometimes. From the event viewer I get the following information.   I've been migrating some servers and desktops using Ubuntu 10.04 from getting the users from an old OpenLDAP implementation to a newer Centos Active Directory. I haven't had any problems so far, until I reached a Debian Lenny server. I've set up the server as the others, setting /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. However, when I issue "getent passwd", I get nothing from the LDAP server. Reading the pam_ldap manpage, I realized that /etc/ldap.conf was not an accepted file by pam_ldap -it worked with Ubuntu though-, so I renamed it to /etc/pam_ldap.conf. Same result.   Hi All, I have a MAC machine running MAC OS Version 10.6.6. I have added my mac machine to a domain controller (which runs Windows version of server) and allow users from domain controller to login. Because of our server migration, we removed the mac machine from old domain controller and added it to the new domain controller. Users in the old domain controller are copied to new domain controller. When I login into mac (which is added to new domain controller) with the domain controller user credentials, I was not able to access my desktop folders and any other folders in my users directory. It says "The folder Desktop can't be opened because you don't have permission its contents" Any idea why I was not able to access my home directory and how can I resolve this issue...!

• Apache 2 Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible

  While the title of this question matches an already asked question, in my case I already set Options +FollowSymLinks. The setup is the following: my hosting setup includes htdocs/ directory that is the default document root for HTTP websites and htdocs-secure that is for HTTPS. They are meant for sites that need a different HTTPS version. In case both share the same files I create a link from htdocs-secure to htdocs by ln -s htdocs htdocs-secure but here comes the problem! Log still says Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /path/to/htdocs-secure Vhost fragment Header always set Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=500" DocumentRoot /path/to/htdocs-secure <Directory "/path/to/htdocs-secure"> allow from all Options +FollowSymLinks </Directory> I think it's a correct setup. The HTTP version of the site is accessible, so it doesn't look like a permission problem. How to fix this? • MS SQL dts to ssis migration error

  Hi, I have migrated some DTS packages to SSIS 2005 using "Migration" wizard. When I tried to run it, it fails saying you need a higher version of SSIS even though the destination SSIS server is on 9.0.4211 level. then I digged in the package using business intelligence studio and saw that one of the package subtasks is "Transform data task" (the dts version) and the package fails to run that. The storage location for this dts task is set to "Embedded in Task". I didn't touch it. why didn't it convert this task to an SSIS data flow task? any help please? Thansk in advance

I used XAMPP because some of the scripts are buggy when run in WAMP, I used WAMP because it support different versions of PHP. Now I want that feature that support different version of PHP to be added to XAMPP. So I could just install 1 software for my Web Development and It would be easy for me to manage. If this is not possible can you give me an alternative solutions? Thanks Note: I'm running on Windows 7
