• Simple way to return anonymous types (to make MVC using LINQ possible)

  I'd like to implement MVC while using LINQ (specifically, LINQ-to-entities). The way I would do this is have the Controller generate (or call something which generates) the result-set using LINQ, then return that to the View to display the data. The problem is, if I do: return (from o in myTable select o); All the columns are read from the database, even the ones (potentially dozens) I don't want. And - more importantly - I can't do something like this: return (from o in myTable select new { o.column }); because there is no way to make anonymous types type-safe! I know for sure there is no nice, clean way of doing this in 3.5 (this is not clean...), but what about 4.0? Is there anything planned, or even proposed? Without something like duck-typing-for-LINQ, or type-safe anonymous return values (it seems to me the compiler should certainly be capable of that), it appears to be nearly impossible to cleanly separate the Controller from the View.

• CALayer flickers when drawing a path

  I am using a CALayer to display a path via drawLayer:inContext delegate method, which resides in the view controller of the view that the layer belongs to. Each time the user moves their finger on the screen the path is updated and the layer is redrawn. However, the drawing doesn't keep up with the touches: there is always a slight lag in displaying the last two points of the path. It also flickers, but only while displaying the last two-three points again. If I just do the drawing in the view's drawRect, it works fine and the drawing is definitely fast enough. Does anyone know why it behaves like this? I suspect it is something to do with the layer buffering, but I couldn't find any documentation about it.

  I'm interested in writing a visualization program for the road data in the 2009 Tiger/Line Shapefiles. I'd like to draw the line data to display all the roads for my county. The ESRI Shapefile or simply a shapefile is a popular geospatial vector data format for geographic information systems software. It is developed and regulated by ESRI as a (mostly) open specification for data interoperability among ESRI and other software products.1 A "shapefile" commonly refers to a collection of files with ".shp", ".shx", ".dbf", and other extensions on a common prefix name (e.g., "lakes.*"). The actual shapefile relates specifically to files with the ".shp" extension, however this file alone is incomplete for distribution, as the other supporting files are required. Does anyone know of existing libraries for parsing and reading in the line data for Shapefiles?

• Need advice on speeding up tableViewCell photo loading performance

  I have around 20 tableview cells that each contain a number (2-5) thumbnail sized pictures (they are VERY small Facebook profile pictures, ex. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-sf2p/hs254.snc3/23133_201668_2989_q.jpg). Each picture is an UIImageView added to the cell's contentview. Scrolling performance is poor, and measuring the draw time I've found the UIImage rendering is the bottleneck. I've researched/thought of some solutions but as I am new to iphone development I am not sure which strategy to pursue: preload all the images and retrieve them from disk instead of URL when drawing cells (I'm not sure if cell drawing will still be slow, so I want to hold off on the time investment here) Have the cells display a placeholder image from disk, while the picture is asynchronously loaded (this seems to be the best solution, but I'm currently not sure exactly how to do best do this) There's the fast drawing recommendation from Tweetie, but I don't know that will have much affect if it turns out my overhead is in network loading (http://blog.atebits.com/2008/12/fast-scrolling-in-tweetie-with-uitableview/) Thoughts/implementation advice? • Drawing selected state on custom UITableViewCell

  So I have a customer UITableViewCell whose whole display in drawn in drawRect. When it draws it creates CGLayers so that it can reuse certain pieces when something is changed. I have changed my UITableViewCellSelectionStyle to None because I don't want the default selected view to cover my drawing. So I call setNeedsDisplay in setSelected:animated: for my cell. But by the time drawRect is called, setSelected:animated: has already been called again to deselect the cell. In my table view controller in didSelectRowAtIndexPath I call deselectRowAtIndexPath as Apple advises. Any ideas? Thanks.

  I'm trying to use hyperlinks instead of buttons to run Basic macros. It seems to be more natural to me because hyperlinks are directly connected to a cell and buttons are not. I'm using the following Formula: =HYPERLINK("vnd.sun.star.script:Standard.Module1.Test?language=Basic&location=document";"Check") It should call the Subroutine Test placed in the document's macros under Standard.Module1 and display the Text 'Check' in the Cell it is written. This works absolutely fine with libreoffice 3.6.1.2 but it doesn't work at all with version 4.1.4.2. I can't see any errors it just happens nothing at all. I tried to simply click the Hyperlink and also to hold CTRL and click it. Same result - nothing. When I use a button the macro works as expected. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

  Hi, I have an asp page based on a very simple database. It references a single table of probably 30 records and maybe 12 data fields and everything works great as I am only uploading a new database every week or so. I have a special circumstance where I would like upload new data to the database and display automatically on the page every 20 to 30 seconds without the user having to refresh their screen. I would expect up to 1000 concurrent users accessing the data. I have been manually uploading the database via ftp, which will obviously not work on this timeline and would also run the risk of error pages as the database is being replaced. So, can anyone point me the right direction to setup this scenario? Other details that might be helpful: The database is an Access database (but I could change to another format if needed) Running on Windows platform hosted by an ISP, not my own server Thanks in advance for any help on this!   According to the UIImage documentation: In low-memory situations, image data may be purged from a UIImage object to free up memory on the system. Does anyone know how this works? It appears that this process is completely transparent and will occur in the background with no input from me, but I can't find any definitive documentation one way or the other. Second, will this data-purge occur when the image is not loaded by me? (I'm getting the image from UIImagePicker). Here's the situation: I'm taking a picture with the UIImagePickerController and and immediately taking that image and sending it to a new UIViewController for display. Sending the raw image to the new controller crashes my app with memory warnings about 30% of the time. Resizing the image takes a few moments, time that I'd rather not spend if there's a 3rd option available to me.

  I am loading JPEGs into a Flash presentation using load with a flash.display.Loader and it's working great. The JPEGs are sizing to their native resolution (which is perfect). However, if I maximize the Flash presentation (in the Flash Player), the JPGs do NOT take advantage of the bigger screen. For example, the presentation is 1024x768, and the image is 1280x400. Normally the image shows with a part offscreen in the Flash presentation. However, if I expand the Flash presentation to 1680x1200, the freshly loaded image still goes offscreen. Is there any way to load the jpg (or png, or whatever) to take advantage of the displayed resolution of the Flash presentation?   I'm trying to improve my spring mvc configuration so as to not require a new config file for every servlet I add, but I'm running into problems. I've tried using this tutorial as a starting point, but I'm running into an issue that I can't figure out. The problem is that when I do a GET to my servlet, I get back a 404 error.   Hi, I needed the dialog to maintain its position fixed even if the page scrolled, so i used the extension at http://forum.jquery.com/topic/dialog-position-fixed-12-1-2010 but there's 2 problems with it: it flickers in IE and Firefox on page scroll (in Safari/Chrome it's fine) on closing and then reopening, it looses its stickyness and scrolls along with the page.   [Authorize] property is nice and handy MS invention, and I hope it can solve the issues I have now To be more specific: When current client isn't authenticated - [Authorize] redirects from secured action to logon page and after logon was successfull - brings user back, this is good. But when current cilent already authenticated but not authorized to run specific action - all I need is to just display my general 403 page. Is it possible without moving authorization logic within controller's body? UPD: The behavior I need in should be semantically equals to this sketch: public ActionResult DoWork() { if (!NotAuthorized()) { return RedirectToAction("403"); } return View(); } so - there should no any redirect and url should be stay the same, but contents of the page should be replaced with 403-page

• jQuery Roundabout IE images pixellated

  Hi at http://lunatestsite.co.uk my jQuery roundabout near the bottom of the homepage is problematic in IE7 and 8 - book cover images blurred/pixellated. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1985303/ie-image-display-problems/2355921#2355921 suggests something to do with em sizing in IE being the root of it but I don't really understand the conclusion reached there. I don't think opacity is an issue in this. Any help gratefully appreciated, this is more or less last on more checklist for this site! Thanks Edit: fixed by resetting to font-size: 1em before the height and width em declarations for the roundable-movable-item and roundabout-movable-item img. Now working in IE7 and 8.

  Hi all i have a that contains a HORIZONTAL menu. the menu consists of an unordered list. i would like the div to get a horizontal scroller whenever the menu exceeds the width of the <div>. i tried using these CSS definitions for my <div>: position: absolute; width: 380px; overflow: auto; overflow-y: hidden; height: 30px; but than realized that since the menu is LIST, the different list items break the line whenever they reach the width of the <div> and move on to the next line, thus the browser doesnt see the need for a horizontal scroller (it doesnt display a vertical one as well because of the overflow-y: hidden; line) any ideas how i can create a 1 line horizontal menu which will scroll horizontally only? thank you all so much.

• ASP.NET GridView - Editing Dynamic Template Columns

  Hello, I have created a GridView whose columns are dynamically created based on my data source. I have implemented these columns by using the approach described here.Those columns display properly on the initial load. However, I need to implement commanding so that a user can edit / delete a row in the GridView. At this point, I have implemented commanding as I would with a normal GridView. I have a TemplateField with an ItemTemplate that has LinkButton elements for edit and delete. The CommandName for each LinkButton is set to either Edit or Delete respectively. Oddly, when a user clicks either the Edit or Delete link, the data in the GridView disappears. However, I have verified that I am in fact re-binding the data when one of these LinkButton elements is selected. Can anyone provide some suggestions as to what the cause could be? Thank you!
