• Is is good or bad to have the email address of a domain's registrant on the same domain?

  Say I own domain abc.com. I think it's a bad idea to use [email protected] as the registrant's (myself) email address. This will cause problems when I need to transfer the domain to another registrar e.g. GoDaddy. The new registrar will then try to send email to [email protected] which is unlikely to function normally since the DNS settings are undergoing changes. So I believe it's best to use email address independent from the domains I own as the registrant's email address. (Isn't it the practice Google Apps is using?) Have I missed something here or am I right?

  Dear beloved community! I accidentally disabled some applications from the notifications bubble. I was wondering, how can I renable the hidden applications again? I found a few answers on askubuntu and the ubuntu forums, but unfortunately the information no longer corresponds properly to the actual file system (e.g: dconf-editor - apps - nm-applet - "disable-connected-notifications" and "disable-disconnected-notifications" are disabled "unchecked", does no longer apply, I can't see anything in there except stamp = value 3). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Have a nice day!

• Windows Phone 8 development on Windows 7 - is it or will be possible?

  I was trying to install Windows Phone 8 SDK on my Windows 7 machine and it hit me with the 'supported only on Windows 8' message. I actually wanted to develop Phone 7.5 apps on Visual Studio 2012, impossible thing with the 7.1 SDK, so I thought 8 SDK will do the job. As if it was not enough that the 8 SDK was controversial upon release, now that it's generally available, to me it seems like a horrible decision to make it available only for Windows 8, because in my humble opinion, no serious and sane developer will install Windows 8 ever, or at least in the near future, just because of the Metro UI. So, anyone knows any workarounds for developing Windows Phone 8 on Windows 7, or at least develop for 7.5 but using Visual Studio 2012?

  By Kathy Miedema, Oracle Applications User Experience George Hackman, Senior Director, Applications User Experiences The Oracle Applications User Experience team has some exciting things happening around Fusion Applications design patterns. Because we’re hoping to have some new offerings soon (stay tuned with VoX to see what’s in the pipeline around Fusion Applications design patterns), now is a good time to talk more about what design patterns can do for the individual user as well as the entire company. George Hackman, Senior Director of Operations User Experience, says the first thing to note is that user experience is not just about the user interface. It’s about understanding how people do things, observing them, and then finding the patterns that emerge. The Applications UX team develops those patterns and then builds them into Oracle applications. What emerges, Hackman says, is a consistent, efficient user experience that promotes a productive workplace. Creating design patterns What is a design pattern in the context of enterprise software? “Every day, people use technology to get things done,” Hackman says. “They navigate a virtual world that reaches from enterprise to consumer apps, and from desktop to mobile. This virtual world is constantly under construction. New areas are being developed and old areas are being redone. As this world is being built and remodeled, efficient pathways and practices emerge. “Oracle's user experience team watches users navigate this world. We measure their productivity and ask them about their satisfaction. We take the most efficient, most productive pathways from the enterprise and consumer world and turn them into Oracle's user experience patterns.” Hackman describes the process as combining all of the best practices from every part of a user’s world. Members of the user experience team observe, analyze, design, prototype, and measure each work task to find the best possible pattern for a particular work flow. As the team builds the patterns, “we make sure they are fully buildable using Oracle technology,” Hackman said. “So customers know they can use these patterns. There’s no need to make something up from scratch, not knowing whether you can even build it.” Hackman says that creating something on a computer is a good example of a user experience pattern. “People are creating things all the time,” he says. “On the consumer side, they are creating documents. On the enterprise side, they are creating expense reports. On a mobile phone, they are creating contacts. They are using different apps like iPhone or Facebook or Gmail or Oracle software, all doing this creation process.” The Applications UX team starts their process by observing how people might create something. “We observe people creating things. We see the patterns, we analyze and document, then we apply them to our products. It might be different from phone to web browser, but we have these design patterns that create a consistent experience across platforms, and across products, too. The result for customers Oracle constantly improves its part of the virtual world, Hackman said. New products are created and existing products are upgraded. Because Oracle builds user experience design patterns, Oracle's virtual world becomes both more powerful and more familiar at the same time. Because of design patterns, users can navigate with ease as they embrace the latest technology – because it behaves the way they expect it to. This means less training and faster adoption for individual users, and more productivity for the business as a whole. Hackman said Oracle gives customers and partners access to design patterns so that they can build in the virtual world using the same best practices. Customers and partners can extend applications with a user experience that is comfortable and familiar to their users. For businesses that are integrating different Oracle applications, design patterns are key. The user experience created in E-Business Suite should be similar to the user experience in Fusion Applications, Hackman said. If a user is transitioning from one application to the other, it shouldn’t be difficult for them to do their work. With design patterns, it isn’t. “Oracle user experience patterns are the building blocks for the virtual world that ensure productivity, consistency and user satisfaction,” Hackman said. “They are built for the enterprise, but incorporate the best practices from across the virtual world. They empower productivity and facilitate social interaction. When you build with patterns, you get all the end-user benefits of less training / retraining from the finished product. • Kendo UI Mobile with Knockout for Master-Detail Views

  Lately I’ve been playing with Kendo UI Mobile to build iPhone apps. It’s similar to jQuery Mobile in that they are both HTML5/JavaScript based frameworks for buildings mobile apps. The primary thing that drew me to investigate Kendo UI was its innate ability to adaptively render a native looking app based on detecting the device it’s currently running on. In other words, it will render to look like a native iPhone app if it’s running on an iPhone and it will render to look like a native Droid app if it’s running on a Droid. This is in contrast to jQuery Mobile which looks the same on all devices and, therefore, it can never quite look native for whatever device it’s running on. My first impressions of Kendo UI were great. Using HTML5 data-* attributes to define “roles” for UI elements is easy, the rendering looked great, and the basic navigation was simple and intuitive. However, I ran into major confusion when trying to figure out how to “correctly” build master-detail views. Since I was already very family with KnockoutJS, I set out to use that framework in conjunction with Kendo UI Mobile to build the following simple scenario: I wanted to have a simple “Task Manager” application where my first screen just showed a list of tasks like this:   Then clicking on a specific task would navigate to a detail screen that would show all details of the specific task that was selected:   Basic navigation between views in Kendo UI is simple. The href of an <a> tag just needs to specify a hash tag followed by the ID of the view to navigate to as shown in this jsFiddle (notice the href of the <a> tag matches the id of the second view):   Direct link to jsFiddle: here. That is all well and good but the problem I encountered was: how to pass data between the views? Specifically, I need the detail view to display all the details of whichever task was selected. If I was doing this with my typical technique with KnockoutJS, I know exactly what I would do. First I would create a view model that had my collection of tasks and a property for the currently selected task like this: 1: function ViewModel() { 2: var self = this; 3: self.tasks = ko.observableArray(data); 4: self.selectedTask = ko.observable(null); 5: } Then I would bind my list of tasks to the unordered list - I would attach a “click” handler to each item (each <li> in the unordered list) so that it would select the “selectedTask” for the view model. The problem I found is this approach simply wouldn’t work for Kendo UI Mobile. It completely ignored the click handlers that I was trying to attach to the <a> tags – it just wanted to look at the href (at least that’s what I observed). But if I can’t intercept this, then *how* can I pass data or any context to the next view? The only thing I was able to find in the Kendo documentation is that you can pass query string arguments on the view name you’re specifying in the href. This enabled me to do the following: Specify the task ID in each href – something like this: <a href=”#taskDetail?id=3></a> Attach an “init method” (via the “data-show” attribute on the details view) that runs whenever the view is activated Inside this “init method”, grab the task ID passed from the query string to look up the item from my view model’s list of tasks in order to set the selected task I was able to get all that working with about 20 lines of JavaScript as shown in this jsFiddle. If you click on the Results tab, you can navigate between views and see the the detail screen is correctly binding to the selected item:   Direct link to jsFiddle: here.   With all that being done, I was very happy to get it working with the behavior I wanted. However, I have no idea if that is the “correct” way to do it or if there is a “better” way to do it. I know that Kendo UI comes with its own data binding framework but my preference is to be able to use (the well-documented) KnockoutJS since I’m already familiar with that framework rather than having to learn yet another new framework. While I think my solution above is probably “acceptable”, there are still a couple of things that bug me about it. First, it seems odd that I have to loop through my items to *find* my selected item based on the ID that was passed on the query string - normally, with Knockout I can just refer directly to my selected item from where it was used. Second, it didn’t feel exactly right that I had to rely on the “data-show” method of the details view to set my context – normally with Knockout, I could just attach a click handler to the <a> tag that was actually clicked by the user in order to set the “selected item.” I’m not sure if I’m being too picky. I know there are many people that have *way* more expertise in Kendo UI compared to me – I’d be curious to know if there are better ways to achieve the same results.

• I cannot search/find any applications in the Dash on 12.04

  Its been a while since I booted my Ubuntu (12.04), but when i did I had several updates (over 100) and I installed them along with rebooting. These updates seemed to mess with my video driver but I seemed to have fixed this. My problem is that my applications do not show anywhere. I can open them via terminal or if there are shortcuts (such as on the toolbar) but if I hit Super and go to Apps, there is nothing. This is true if I hit Super and search any app name nothing will come back (except for files). I need help to understand what happened! Also for some reason I can't upgrade to 12.10 (I assume because I have 12.04 and not 12.04.1, which I don't understand how to get).

  I usually used windows for developing desktop applications, but recently I've almost abandoned desktop apps and have been doing web development so much. I'm using many web technologies and languages, especially Ruby on Rails, and I'm facing too many problems using windows. Besides, I personally want to move to Linux. So, what's the most helpful and comfortable Linux distribution for web development? I have a short but handy experience using Ubuntu desktop, so I'm familiar with the generics of Linux (like -as a simple example- using the command line), and I don't have any problem in getting used to any distribution (I know I may face some difficulties, but again I have no problem), I only want the best one for web development (especially rails!!). If the question doesn't belong to this site, I'll be glad to migrate it to the appropriate one.

  I have run update-alternatives as well as gnome preffered apps selection thing. And all point to have chromium browser as default. Yet when I run xdg-open http://askubuntu.com firefox is launched! Similarly emacs and bzr also launch stuff in firefox instead of chromium. Are there any additional settings which affect xdg-open functionality? Something is definatly broken: UPDATE I have purged firefox: update-alternatives - uses chromium browser sensible-browser - opens chromium browser xdg-open & gnome-open - opens using google-chrome which kindly tells me "it's not default browser" !!!!

• Developing for Chrome App/Android?

  I have been developing for win7 mobile (XNA/silverlight and will continue to do so, love everything about it) but I wanted to branch a few of my more polished games to google app store online, and perhaps android(though not sure, as with all the different versions it makes learning/loading applications a bit tricky) What is the most versatile language to start learning from chrome apps/android: Java would be excellent for android, but could I port it to a web app for chrome? (and its close to C#) Flash would work for a web app as I can just embed it into a html page (have done actionscript before, didn't care much for the IDE though), but would it also work on android? or I guess there is always C/C++ but haven't heard much about that, though I think it works for both (though C++ does interest me) Any advice would be excellent, thanks.

• Remove gradients from elementary theme?

  I really don't like the gradients in the elementary theme, and I was wondering if there were a way to remove them, from applications like Nautilus-Elementary, Postler, Dexter, etc. I've tried commenting out the Apps/[Application].rc in /usr/share/themes/elementary/gtk-2.0/gtkrc but it doesn't work, still leaves the gradients in their place. I'm a big fan of the other controls in the theme; the scroll bar, the way it borders gedit and the buttons, and I'd like to keep these features, but I don't like the way it styles its windows.   Typical things to worry about when dealing with text are the BOM/signature, encoding, and the end of line (EOL) char/chars. I know that Windows often favours \r\n (CR+LF) and Mac/Linux favours \n (LF), but how about mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android? Do typical apps on those platforms favour one or the other? Also, which text encodings are mobiles most likely to use - UTF-8, iso-8859-1, or even Windows 1252 (or other default codepage) or maybe even UTF-16? And if they use UTF-8/16, are they likely to need (or require not having) a BOM/signature? What is the typical behavior here?

• Unity Bar auto-hide behaviour and application icons placement

  The first issue: It seems that sometimes when I hover to the left edge of the screen the Unity Bar will not stay on top of other windows even if I continue to hover the cursor above it, at other times it will stay on top. Is this a normal behaviour? Or am I affected by some bug / inconsistency? If it's normal, what's the logic behind it? The second issue: Application icons for running applications do not maintain their position in the Unity Bar but instead move around according to some weird rules (if any?) that I can't understand. Is this to be expected, or is it a bug? Is there a way to force them to stop moving around? I like to see certain apps in certain positions and this bothers me.

• How do i make/setup a mailing list?

  I know i could program it myself but maybe there is a simple (thats the keyword) package. I like to add a box, snippet, form or page to my site for users to input their email address. Then i'd like it to automatically send email saying you have successfully subscribe. I'd want an unsubscribe link and i would be using smtp on google apps. I would like to send email with html so i can have a simple sentence with a complex link such as this I dont know if i'll get marked as spam if i try to send everyone an email at once? so i'd like the software to manage it. Also i'd like to get the emails in a simple format like csv. Is there a simple app that does this? if not i can write a simple form which does a simple insert (or delete when unsubscribing) and write a 200-300line app to send my emails out for me.
