• A font like RomanS in appearance but with support for more characters (Autocad)?

  In a Autocad 2010 installation, the standard font used is RomanS. That font is so limited on characters, so when I use "text" command I cannot add "³" on text of cubic meters measures (a "?" is displayed instead of the "³" character - see isolated text on figure below and Font characters Latin Supplement range). When I use a dimension command, like multileader, Autocad "corrects" that issue using another font that support that missing character, resulting on an awful mixture (see text on multileader below - on multileader text properties, we can see 3m{\fArial|b0|i0|c0|p34;³}). I can easily change that font with another, like Verdana, Times New Roman... that have more characters than RomanS font, but I would like to use an alternative font more like RomanS in appearance. Any help?

• Refering to a Cell in a Different Workbook

  I work between different spreadsheets, and I like to have one main workbook that links to certain cells in other workbooks. For example, I will do a statement of business activities workbook that has all the business expenses listed, and then I will have individual workbooks for each expense account. In the old excel, I would just put =(and then go to the workbook that i wanted, and then select the cell i wanted and then hit enter) and it would put the amount from that specific cell in my statement of business activities. When I try to do that in excel 2010, I put the equals sign in the cell, and then go to the other workbook and find the cell I want, and when I hit enter, it just moves down a line and nothing happens in the other workbook. How can I get this to work again, what do i need to do??

• Error when running adprep32 /rodcprep, trying to add a 2008 domain controller to a 2003 domain

  I'm trying to migrate a Small Business Server 2003 to Server 2008 domain. The problem is when I run the adprep32 /rodcprep command as specified as the final step in Step 3 of this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_2881-Migrate-Small-Business-Server-2003-to-Exchange-2010-and-Windows-2008-R2.html I get an error "Adprep could not contact a replica for partition..." which is described in detail here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949257 I've also attached the AdPrep.log file for full details. So when I try to run DCPromo on my new Server 2008 PDC (it's not the PDC yet, but want it to be soon), I get an error saying that /rodcprep hasn't ran so there could be errors if I continue. Anyone ran into this or have any suggestions on how to help? Can Dsmgmt be ran on server 2003 to help solve this? Assuming it's a partition error.

So, there is always the chance of thinking not being renewed as an April fools joke.  Well, I get to postpone that joke one more time. It looks like, I’ve been renewed again. WAHOOO!! :) Thank you Microsoft, and thank you to everyone one of you for your support and best wishes, and most of all, thanks to our MVP lead, Melissa – many don’t realize it, but it’s a tough job she has to do. Think about it, all the people who are MVPs, those who no longer will be, and those who want to be. 11 years ago when I got my first award, my love for technology was insane.   Hi I can't get MultiViews to set up properly on my Apache 2.2. When I go to filtered.com/something, I expect it to execute something.pl but it doesn't. I get a Error 404 page.   I try to connect SharePoint Online with Dynamics CRM Online using BDC. But without any results. I'll try to using Account's from CRM in SharePoint Online like a list. I mean - when I have 100 account's (customers) in CRM I want to export this account's to SharePoint Online like a list. And when I will bed edited account in CRM the elements in the list will be update (and when I edited element on SharePoint list it will update in CRM). Is there any possibility to connect in this way? If if what I should use - SharePoint Designer 2010, Visual Studio or do this on web interface?

• Give a session on C++ AMP – here is how

  Ever since presenting on C++ AMP at the AMD Fusion conference in June, then the Gamefest conference in August, and the BUILD conference in September, I've had numerous requests about my material from folks that want to re-deliver the same session. The C++ AMP session I put together has evolved over the 3 presentations to its final form that I used at BUILD, so that is the one I recommend you base yours on. Please get the slides and the recording from channel9 (I'll refer to slide numbers below). This is how I've been presenting the C++ AMP session: Context (slide 3, 04:18-08:18) Start with a demo, on my dual-GPU machine. I've been using the N-Body sample (for VS 11 Developer Preview). (slide 4) Use an nvidia slide that has additional examples of performance improvements that customers enjoy with heterogeneous computing. (slide 5) Talk a bit about the differences today between CPU and GPU hardware, leading to the fact that these will continue to co-exist and that GPUs are great for data parallel algorithms, but not much else today. One is a jack of all trades and the other is a number cruncher. (slide 6) Use the APU example from amd, as one indication that the hardware space is still in motion, emphasizing that the C++ AMP solution is a data parallel API, not a GPU API. It has a future proof design for hardware we have yet to see. (slide 7) Provide more meta-data, as blogged about when I first introduced C++ AMP. Code (slide 9-11) Introduce C++ AMP coding with a simplistic array-addition algorithm – the slides speak for themselves. (slide 12-13) index<N>, extent<N>, and grid<N>. (Slide 14-16) array<T,N>, array_view<T,N> and comparison between them. (Slide 17) parallel_for_each. (slide 18, 21) restrict. (slide 19-20) actual restrictions of restrict(direct3d) – the slides speak for themselves. (slide 22) bring it altogether with a matrix multiplication example. (slide 23-24) accelerator, and accelerator_view. (slide 26-29) Introduce tiling incl. tiled matrix multiplication [tiling probably deserves a whole session instead of 6 minutes!]. IDE (slide 34,37) Briefly touch on the concurrency visualizer. It supports GPU profiling, but enhancements specific to C++ AMP we hope will come at the Beta timeframe, which is when I'll be spending more time talking about it. (slide 35-36, 51:54-59:16) Demonstrate the GPU debugging experience in VS 11. Summary (slide 39) Re-iterate some of the points of slide 7, and add the point that the C++ AMP spec will be open for other compiler vendors to implement, even on other platforms (in fact, Microsoft is actively working on that). • Weird behavior when debugging ASP.NET Web application: cookie expires (1/1/0001 12:00AM) by itself on next breakpoint hit.

  I'm working on ajaxified (Telerik AJAX Manager) ASP.NET application using Visual Studio 2010 (runs with admin privileges) and IIS 7.5. Basically, everything on the page is inside update panels. As for cookies I have custom encrypted "settings" cookie which is added to Response if it's not there on session start. Application runs smoothly, problem was arising when I started the debugging it: Actions:  no breakpoints set, F5 - application has started in debug mode, browser window loaded. I login to site, click on controls, all is fine. Next I set *any* breakpoint somewhere in code, break on it then let it continue running, but once I break again (immediately after first break) and check cookie: it has expired date 1/1/0001 12:00AM and no data in value property. I was storing current language there, which was used inside Page's InitializeCulture event and obviously exception was being raised. I spent several hours trying deleting browser cache, temporary ASP.NET files etc, nothing seemed to work. Same application has been tested on exactly same environment on another PC and no problems with debugging there. After all I've found the solution: visual studio generates for every solution additional .suo file where additional settings are stored, like UI state, breakpoints info, etc, so I deleted it and loaded project again, tried debugging - everything is ok now.

• MVVM Light V4.1 with support for Windows Phone 8

  Today is a very exciting day: After the official release of Windows 8 (and Microsoft Surface!) on Friday, and the official release of Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the Build conference is starting! This is the conference in which we will learn all about the developer experience for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. As a partner of Microsoft, I had the privilege of trying out some of the new things early, and this gave me the opportunity to port MVVM Light to Windows Phone 8 (it was already running for Windows 8), and today I am officially publishing this new version. Before you go and update, please not the following: V4.1 (4.1.24.0) only supports Visual Studio 2012 (and Express). If for some reason you are still using Visual Studio 2010, don’t despair! In the next few days I will publish an update supporting these versions as well. But for now, please only upgrade if you are on VS12! That being said, here we go: The download page is available on Codeplex and you can download the updated MSI and install it. Please make sure to read the Readme HTML page that automatically opens in your web browser after the MSI completes! • How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance. Edit: Thanks for the information. • Xdebug 2.0.5 with Zend Server CE PHP5.2.12 possible?

  I'm using Zend Server CE with PHP 5.2.12 on OSX Snow Leopard and want to use Xdebug. I've turned off Zend Data Cache, Zend Optimizer+, and Zend Debugger in the console. When I run $ cd ~/Downloads/xdebug-2.0.5 $ /usr/local/zend/bin/phpize I get Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20041225 Zend Module Api No: 20060613 Zend Extension Api No: 220060519 The PHP API Version, 20041225, seems to be off from the documentation (aka wrong). When I continue installation with $ ./configure ---with-php-config=/usr/local/zend/bin/php-config $ make $ sudo make install The installed xdebug.so seems to be the wrong one. Which version of xdebug do I need for this PHP API version? The Zend API numbers are ok. I'm just confused at why the PHP API Version doesn't match. • Computer prints blank pages before and after content

  This would seem like a pretty simple question but I have exhausted every idea I can come up with. I bought a brand new Dell Latitude E5410 not too long ago with Windows 7 OS. I installed office 2010 on the machine right away and have had a printing problem since day one. For some reason every time I print a page, a blank page prints out before and after the content print. This also applies to any other application such as notepad or printing an email. If I have a 6 page document, it still prints out one page before and after every content page. Meaning I get my 6 page document along with 12 blank pages. I can't figure out why this would be some sort of default setting or what would cause this printing configuration. I am the only computer on the network that has this problem and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it. Can anyone help me figure this out or steer me in the right direction to correcting this problem?

• Lenovo t400 laptop docking station with DVI out shows green artifacts when connected to monitor

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop, with Windows XP. I have a docking station connected via DVI to my Samnsung monitor. I'm connected at 1920x1200 resolution and I keep seeing all these green dots (when colors are supposed to be near black). It's really bad. I have tried running on my Samsung monitor, at all sizes, even down town 1280x1024 like my monitors at work. When I use the docking station at work, I am able to connect 2 1280x1024 NEC monitors (one via DVI, one through VGA, both through my docking station). I have absolutely no issue there, both displays work great. I have tried to update the drivers, I've even installed the latest video drivers from lenovo's site (DEC-02-2010). • Currently well suited SATA2-SSDs for Laptop usage

  I am looking for a solid state drive for my laptop. My dillemma: I have been waiting for the new Intel SSDs since Q3/2010, as I've heard they should be better and cheaper, due to lower memory manufacturing costs. Now it looks like the new Intel drives are very fast, but still expensive. I would still buy one of them if I could benefit from the full speed. My hardware only has a SATA-2 port though. Thus, my question: Is it worthwhile to buy one of those new Intel SSDs made for SATA-3 if I won't be able to use the full speed? Are there any other promising new SSDs that will be released soon? (Inside the next 1-2 months) If I wouldn't make a good deal buying the newer, faster drives, what drives can you recommend? I don't consider this question subjective, as I am mainly looking for answers concerning the SATA-2/SATA-3 conflict.

• A quick hello to the Western Kentucky .NET User Group

  A few days back, I got a chance to speak at the Western Kentucky .NET User Group meeting in Murray, Kentucky.  The opportunity came up because the original speaker, Jeff Blankenburg, had another obligation and was thus unable to come to this meeting.  I volunteered to deliver his presentation, which is an overview of MIX10 conference. It was a great experience for me; got to drive around and do a little bit of sight-seeing – can’t say I’ve ever been to Kentucky before, so first trip ever there.  I got to meet the user group’s current lead, Tom Turner and got to chat and discuss about all kinds of stuff with the other members.  Cheers to Matt Gawarecki and Brandon Sharp! The presentation itself mostly covers new features in Visual Studio 2010, which was recently released on April 12 – got to demonstrate Historical Debugging in IntelliTrace, Parallel Stacks, View Call Hierarchy and show some Extensions.  We also covered some of the new functionalities in Silverlight 4 (using webcams, drag & drop support among others) and I got to show off Scott Guthrie’s Windows Phone 7 Twitter app.  Altogether, it was quite a bit to cover in 70 minutes or so, but I think everyone enjoyed it. Jeff provided me with the presentation slides (which I modify a bit) and demo applications; so I’m putting it up here for those that may be interested in downloading them.  Please keep in mind that all the demos were made with VS2010 RC, so there may be slight tweaks to get it to work on the RTM version.

• Backup Exec backup-to-disk folder creation - Access denied

  I'm having a difficult time creating a backup-to-disk folder in Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 and Backup Exec 2010. The backend storage is a Nexenta/ZFS-based NAS filer sharing the volume via CIFS. I've also seen the issue on other *nix-based NAS devices. I've attempted mapping the drive, providing the full paths to the folder, etc. I can browse to the share just fine from within Windows, but Backup Exec fails to create the B2D folder with different variants of a Unable to create new backup folder. Access denied error. I've attempted creating service accounts in Backup Exec to handle the authentication, but nothing seems to work. What's the key to making this work?

  As we celebrated the 10th Annual JCP Awards and Party at JavaOne last week, we asked attendees to share their favorite memories.  Add yours to the retrospective list below... The 10th Award party will be the best :-) I won a DSLR camera at the 2011 JCP party and have taken many awesome photos of my family with it ever since!  Thanks JCP! Remembering the password to get in! It was very fascinating talking to all those JUG Members of last years' (2011) party and hearing about their hopes & expectations.  Especially from members of SouJava and LJC. Hanging out with my friends Best food and one of my colleagues won the raffle prize. My friend Brian won a jacket 3 years ago and my friend Craig won a camera last year. 2010 when I took home 2 awards on behalf of JSRs I'm on. When Patrick & Scott sang 'Light My Fire'! Catch up with friends! Being able to attend my first JCP party and and joining JCP community. Of course it's when some people won the award (SouJava and LJC)!   Meeting Crazy Bob! This is my first. Mike  to be JCP Member of the Year in 2011. When SouJava and London Java Community won Member of the Year award! JBoss making CDI Everything! When SouJava won the JCP Member of the Year award.
