• Announcing Spacewalk Support for Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Customers

  Over the years, customers migrating to Oracle Linux have asked for options to provide a transitional solution for their existing system management tools (such as Red Hat Satellite Server) while evaluating and planning migrations to Oracle's Enterprise Manager, which is offered at no additional charge with Oracle Linux Support Subscriptions.  Based on this request, we are pleased to announce support for the open-source community project, Spacewalk, which is the basis for both Red Hat Satellite Server and SUSE Manager.  Effective today, customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Support subscriptions have access to a fully supported Spacewalk build which can be setup to easily manage Oracle Linux systems.   Spacewalk support for Oracle Linux requires Oracle Linux 6, x86_64 for the server and provides support for Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Linux 6 (x86, x86_64) clients.  This solution requires Oracle Database 11g Release 2 as the  supported database repository for Spacewalk with Oracle Linux.  Within the next several weeks, a limited use license for the Oracle Database will be included with this offer.  Until this is complete, customers may use an existing Oracle database license or they may begin by downloading a 30-day trial license from eDelivery.  Customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier subscriptions will automatically have access to the channel hosting the supported build.  Please review the release notes for further instructions.   Hi Linux Community, I find my self struggling with the ever slow and buggy windoze OS once again. It's Time to change with the Ubuntu 10.10 64bit as a really faster Operating System. My Hard Disk laptop as a RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS partition they are both Primary. I Have the System Recovery DVD for Windows 64bit should anything happen. Here's the layout I used with windows before: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 284,89GB (Primary,Boot,Pagefile,Dump) * HP_TOOLS system partition FAT32 - 99MB (Primary) * (D:) RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) Here's the layout I want to make based on your answers * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 60GB (Primary) (sda1) * (D:) Windows DATA partition (user files) NTFS - 120GB(Primary)(sda2);wanna share with Linux * Linux root Ext4 - 100GB (Primary)(sda3) (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) * Linux swap swap- RAM size, 3GB (sda4) * Linux root Ext3- 15,9GB (Extended)(sda5) (OpenSuse or Puppy) Here is my New Ubuntu 10.10 64bit layout in use now: * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) (sda1) **Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.(?)** * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 90GB (Primary) (sda2) * (D:) Windows 7 RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) (sda3) * Linux system partition EXTENDED - 195GB (Logical) * Linux root Ext4- 10GB (Extended) (sda5) * Linux home Ext3- 185GB (Extended) (sda6) I didn't know if I could wipe all previous partitions when i installed Ubuntu because of the RECOVERY partition so I just made the space for my extended partition by deleting the HP_TOOLS (Fat32). By doing this I managed to make and successfully install Ubuntu 64 but I couldn't actually make the partition for the swap or a third Linux OS.   I'm trying to figure out an exercise but it doesn't really makes to much sense.. I'm not asking someone to provide the solution. just to try and analyse what needs to be done in order to solve this. I'm trying to understand which PSP 1.0 1.1 process I should use. PROBE? Or something else? I would greatly appreciate some help on this one from someone that has experience with the Personal Software Process Methodology.. Here is the question. For the reference case (“code1.c”), the following s/w metrics are provided: man-hours spent in implementation phase (per-module): 2,7 mh/file man-hours spent in testing phase (per-module): 4,3 mh/file estimated number of bugs remaining (per-module): 0,3 errors/function, 4 errors/module (remaining) Based on the corresponding values provided for the reference case, each of the following tasks focus on some s/w metrics to be estimated for the test case (“code2.c”): [25 marks] (estimated) man-hours required in implementation phase (per-module) [8 marks] (estimated) man-hours required in testing phase (per-module) [8 marks] (estimated) number of bugs remaining at the end of testing phase (per-module) [9 marks] Tasks 4 through 6 should use the data provided for the reference case within the context of Personal Software Process level-1 (PSP-1), using them as a single-point historic data log. Specifically, the same s/w metrics are to be estimated for the test case (“code2.c”), using PSP as the basic estimation model. • How to void checked exceptions in Java?

  I consider checked exception for a design mistake in the Java language. They lead to leaky abstractions and a lot of clutter in the code. It seems that they force the programmer to handle exceptions early although they are in most cases better handled lately. So my question is how to avoid checked exception? My idea is to execute the actual code inside an exception translator using lambda expressions. Example: ExceptionConverter.convertToRuntimeException(() => { // do things that could throw checked exceptions here }); If for example a IOException occurs it gets rethrown as an exception with the same name but from a different class hierarchy (based on RuntimeException). This approach would effectivly remove the need to handle or declare checked exceptions. Exceptions could then be handled where and if it makes sense. Another solution would be to declare IOException throws Exception on each method. What do you think which solution is better? Do you know any better approach to avoid (suppress) checked exceptions in Java?

  If you have an MSDN account and, like me, systematically claim keys just as well as you systematically forget which keys you’ve used in which test environments! Well, in a meager attempt to help myself track my keys I created an importer for KeePass 2 that takes in the XML document that you can export from MSDN and TechNet. The source is available at https://github.com/svickn/MicrosoftKeyImporterPlugin.   How do I get my KeysExport.xml from MSDN or TechNet? Easy! First, in MSDN, go to your product keys. From there, at the top right select Export to XML. This will let you download an XML file full of your Microsoft Keys.   How do I import it into KeePass 2? The instructions are simple and available in the GitHub ReadMe.md, so I won’t repeat them. Here is a screenshot of what the imported result looks like:   As you can see, the import process creates a group called Microsoft Product Keys and creates a subgroup for each product. The individual entries each represent an individual key, stored in the password field. The importer decides if a key is new based on the key stored in the password, so you can edit the notes or title for the individual entries however you please without worrying about them being overwritten or duplicated if you re-import an updated KeysExport.xml from MSDN! • Google results show .info domain instead of .com

  I am on shared hosting currently and i registered this account with a .info domain as the main domain.... say MyDomain.info . However, the site runs from MyDomain.com . This is a cpanel based shared hosting account. MyDomain.info has nothing hosted at all... i.e no content files... MyDomain.com is setup as an Add On Domain and run from /public_html/MyDomain under MyDomain.info The problem is that when i type MyDomain as the keyword for search in Google , it shows result(s)for Mydomain.info although this is not the intended site and has no content hosted on itself. I tried to solve the issue by issuing a 301 permanent redirect from MyDomain.info to MyDomain.com, however Google keeps on displaying results as mydomain.info as the main site even after 1 month of the redirect. I want google to index MyDomain.com as the main site and remove MyDomain.info from the results. Also is this harmful from the seo point of view? How can i improve the seo if it is?

  I currently have a .htaccess file that looks like this: RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^action=view&item=([0-9]+)$ RewriteRule ^index\.php$ /index.php?url=item/%1 [R=301] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?url=$1 [QSA,L] It is meant to 301 redirect my old query string based URLs to new CakePHP urls. This will successfully send users to the correct page. However, Google doesn't seem to like it (see below). I previously tried doing this: RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^action=view&item=([0-9]+)$ RewriteRule ^index\.php$ /item/%1 [R=301] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?url=$1 [QSA,L] But that fails. The second rewrite rule doesn't seem to catch the rewritten URL. It goes straight through. Using the first version wouldn't be a problem, except that I suspect that is what is choking up Google. It hasn't indexed my sitemap full of the new URLs. My old sitemap had been fully indexed and all the URLs are in Google's index. But it isn't following the redirects from the old URLs to the new. I have a 'not followed' error for every one of the query urls that was in my old sitemap. Am I properly using a 301 redirect here? Is it the weird rewrite rule? What can I do to send both Google and users to the proper page and save my page rank?

• First Experience with Web Services

  When I first started programming with Microsoft .Net (1.0 Framework) I had a strong desire to learn how search engines indexed web sites. At that time I was a working as a search engine spammer creating web pages to generate traffic for specific themes for various clients. One way I attempted to better understand .Net was to build a web spider that analyzed web pages on demand. An example of the spider is hosted at AddLinkz.com. After my spider was built I had no real idea what I could/should do with it until I found the MSN Search API. I used this web service to compare its results with my spider. Additionally, I used the API to feed my .Net web spider new URLs from the API based on specific search terms. MSN’s search API was very easy to use, I just had to request information by calling a web URL with parameters via a Get request and the results were returned in XML. At that time all requests were limited to XML responses and a maximum of 1,000 results per query.   Since then the entire API has gone through several reconstructions, rebranding and new search services.  Microsoft’s new Bing API replaced the older MSN search API and added several new search capabilities. These new features allow search data to be returned for web searches, image searches, new searches, and related search terms to name a few. • Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

  I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically.   At the Moment I finished the first game with my game engine(if I wanna call it like that) which is based in LWJGL. Now i'm worring if I could do crossplattforming in my engine. I build me a tool tool with a batch file to compile my project dir into an .exe . At first i'm looking to do it on Android with an comparable batch file. An link for an tutorial would be awesome! At next place there would be an renderer and audiosystem. If read that theres an OpenGL ES renderer, and I allready played a bit around with the Android SDK. But I use the Texture and Audio class in slick-util. So I thought about creating OOP classes that carry around the data and load it in an platform specific Buffer.   I'm trying to write an backup script that will exclude files over a certain size. My script gives the proper command, but when run within the script it outputs an an error. However if the same command is run manually everything works...??? • How do I configure pfsense as an outbound VPN client?

  We use pfsense as a router/firewall. Because we're based in China, it is useful for us to have VPN access for all our internal clients. Instead of each individual client connecting to a VPN server stateside, I'd like to configure pfsense as a VPN client and have all the network traffic be routed through it. Most of the posts I've seen regarding pfsense and VPN are concerning connecting to the LAN from outside; this is not what I want to do. Another option would be for an SSH tunnel to be initiated on the pfsense box with the LAN traffic routed through it. How do I configure pfsense to be able to do either of these? One huge caveat is that OpenVPN cannot be used. The solution I am looking for needs to use one of the other VPN protocols.

• Chainloading GRUB2 from BURG

  I have an old PC with Puppy Linux in addition to Ubuntu and Windows XP. THis creates a LOT of menu entries (all of which I would like to keep): Ubuntu 10.04 Ubuntu Recovery Mode Memtest x86 Memtest Serial Windows XP Pro Precise Puppy Linux Precise Puppy TORAM Puppy 4.3.1 Puppy 4.3.1 TORAM Plop Boot Manager (for booting to USB, PC doesn't have BIOS option). Now, in my fancy shiny laptop I've gotten really attached to BURG, and would like a setup where I have a Windows icon, an Ubuntu icon, and an arrow that chainloads GRUB2 so that I can boot from USB or run Puppy if need be (all these entries will obviously not fit into the BURG theme I use, Lightness). The problem is, GRUB2 can't install the the beginning of a partition like it used to be able to (I am reluctant to specify andything with --force at the end), at least, without warning that warn: This is a BAD idea!. So I'm kind of at a loss here. I can't see how the folding option would work, because all of those other options would have the same icon once I unfolded (Lightness is non-text-based). If I do embed GRUB using grub-install /dev/sdax --force, how do I chainload it with BURG? Is there another way?

• Easily tell if focused on VirtualBox window?

  Is there a way to make it very obvious that my VirtualBox window isn't in focus? The problem I'm having is switching between workspaces on Ubuntu or OS X and then trying to type in my Windows virtual machine, only to find that it's not in focus. The Windows window looks like it's in focus (based on the title bar), but I'm actually typing in Firefox on the host machine, for example. It's even worse because the Windows text insertion cursor is blinking to show focus. Ideally, I'd like the VM's display to get unsaturated (e.g. a "partial" grayscale) when not in focus, just to prevent this keyboard-focus problem. Other options would be fine too, as long as I don't have to second guess where my focus is. I'm not using the seamless mode -- the display is all within a window.

• Sharing internet connection from Windows XP using wi-fi router

  Hi, I have an network configuration like: Ethernet cable from ISP connected to Windows XP machine, configured with static IP 192.168.0.3 Another ethernet connection from 2nd Windows XP machine's network adapter to a Wi-Fi router (D-Link Airport G+) XP set to "Share internet connection", the 2nd adapter configured as static to 192.169.0.1 D-Link Airport Wi-Fi router also configured as "static connection", it's IP set to 192.169.0.2, default gateway set to 192.169.0.1. Network mask everywhere is 24. Laptop computer connected with the router with static IP 192.169.0.3 The problems are: XP machine sees the router (it's able to ping it and access it via the web admin tool) The router somehow cannot PING the XP machine (using the tool provided by the web-based admin tool) The laptop computer cannot ping anything and cannot be pinged The router is only accessible when the ethernet cable is connected with a router's 1-4 LAN port, when I connect it via "WAN" port (which I believe is the proper one) it's not visible from the XP machine If you have similar experience with configuring a network like this I would really appreciate your help. I cannot use the Wi-Fi router with the ISP cable itself.

• Problems with Ubuntu and AMD A10-4655M APU

  I have a new HP Sleekbook 6z with AMD A10-4655M APU. I tried installing Ubuntu with wubi--the first attempt ended up with a 'AMD unsupported hardware' watermark that I wasn't able to remove (the appeared when I tried to update the drivers as Ubuntu suggested) On the second attempted install Ubuntu installed (I stayed away from the suggested drivers) but the performance was extremely poor----as in Windows Vista poor. I am not sure what the solution is--if I need to wait until there is a kernel update with Ubuntu or if there are other solutions--I realise this is a new APU for the market. I would love to have Ubuntu 12.04 up and running--Windows 7 does very well with this new processor so Ubuntu should, well, be lightening speed. The trial on the Sleekbook with Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2 release was a complete failure. I created a bootable USB. By using either the 'Try Ubuntu' or 'Install Ubuntu' options resulted in the usual purple Ubuntu splash screen, followed by nothing...as in a black screen without any hint of life. Interestingly one can hear the Ubuntu intro sound. In case you are wondering, this same USB was trialed subsequently on another computer with and Intel Atom Processor. Worked flawlessly. Lastly the second trial on the Sleekbook resulted in the same results as the first paragraph. Perhaps 12.10 Beta will overcome this issue, or the finalised 12.10 release in October. I don't have the expertise to know what the cause of the behaviour is-the issue could be something else entirely. Sadly, the Windows 7 performance is very good with this processor-very similar and in some instances better to the 2nd generation Intel i5 based computer I use at my workplace. Whatever the cause is for the performance with Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 Alpha 2, the situation doesn't bode well for Ubuntu. Ubuntu aside, the HP Sleekbook is a good performer for the price. I am certain once the Ubuntu issue is worked on and solutions arise, the Ubuntu performance will probably be better than ever.

• Event notifications for Reporting Systems

  The last couple of months I have been working on an application that allows people to browse a data mart. Nice, but nothing new. In this context I have an idea that I want to publish before anyone else patents it: event notifications. You see, reporting systems are not used as much as we’d like. Typically, users don’t know where to look for reports that might interest them. At best, there are some standard reports that people generate every so often, i.e. based on a time trigger. Or some reporting systems can be configured to send monthly reports around, for convenience. But apart from that, the reporting system is just sitting there, waiting for the rare curious user who makes the effort to dig a bit for treasures to be found. Wouldn’t it be great if there were data triggers? Imagine we could configure the reporting system to let us know when something interesting has happened. It would send us a message containing a link that would take us to the relevant section of the reporting system, showing a report with all the data pertaining to that event, preparing us for proper actions. Here in the North West this would really be great. You see, it rains here most of the time from October to June, so why even check the weather forecast? But sometimes, sometimes it snows. And sometimes the sun shines. So rather than me going to the weather site and seeing over and over again that it will be raining, making me think “why bother?” I’d like to configure the weather site so that it lets me know when the rain stops. Now, hopefully nobody has patented this idea already. Let me know.

• Command line audio library manager for Linux

  Hi all Hear is my set-up, I have a Linux server that is running Music Player Demon, all the audio files are under a dir (/muzik) which is exported by NFS. So to add files to the MPD database, I just drop the files into the /muzik NFS share and up date the MPD db, so far so good, but I would like to keep the dir strucher belowe /muzik in sum sort of order. To achieve this I am using Amarok, wich a start on my laptop and then use the organise files command to sort the files in into a sensible dir strucher based on the tags in the files. Do you know of any command line utility that can do the same thing that I am using Amarok for so I can run it from cron on the server and automate the process? I hope that this make sense.

• Another Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 mail flow issue

  During a migration recently, we came across another internal mail routing issue.  The symptoms were identical to my previous post about Exchange internal mail routing.  Mail was flowing from 2010 to 2003, from 2010 to the internet, but not from 2003 to 2010.   I went through the normal check list looking at permissions, DNS, and the routing group connectors.  I verified that both servers listed in the routing group connectors were the routing master in their respective routing groups through the 2003 ESM.  I also verified that inheritable permissions were enabled for the Exchange 2003 server object in the schema.  No luck with either.   For my previous post about this issue in which inheritable permissions were the culprit: Exchange 2010, Exchange 2003 Mail Flow issue   And for Routing Group issues: Exchange 2007 Routing Group Connector Mayhem   I finally enabled logging on the SMTP virtual server on Exchange 2003 and the Default Receive Connector on 2010 and sent a few test e-mails where I found 2003 was having issues authenticating to 2010.  By default 2003 uses Exchange Server Authentication to communicate to 2010. The exact error was: 4.7.0 Temporary Authentication Failure which was found in the SMTP logs on the Exchange 2003 side   After scouring based on this error, I found the solution:   The Access this computer from the network user rights in the local computer policy on the Exchange 2010 server were changed from the default.  The network administrator had modified the Default Domain policy and changed this user right assignment to only list Domain Users.   The fix was to clear this setting in the Default Domain policy,  force gpupdate to refresh the group policy settings, then ensure the appropriate users and groups were listed.   This immediately fixed the problem and the Exchange 2003 server was able to route mail to the Exchange 2010 mailboxes.   The default user rights assignments for Access this computer from the network On Workstations and Servers: Administrators Backup Operators Power Users Users Everyone On Domain Controllers: Administrators Authenticated Users Everyone More can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc740196(WS.10).aspx

• Working with a company as a Junior Developer [closed]

  We all have started our careers in some way or other. Well, I am a college student based in North America & I am doing my second internship with the same company with which I did my first internship. I came back here because people here were helpful always and supportive. But it just happened today, and I wanted to share this on SO. Well since I started I have been doing documentation and that kind of stuff only as compared to my first internship in which I actually worked along with the developers & learned so many things. Well, I was in a conversation with my Team lead, and he asked me if I completed that particular work or not? Well, That particular work had slipped from my mind. He was indeed I kind of pissed, and said "You don't have to worry about it, I will figure out". Well, I felt so bad and was about to literally cry. I stopped my lunch and then went on to complete that work. I always ask for work in office, and I always try to be an asset for whoever I am working but this was the first time that it happened. What are your thoughts on this and should I apologise or not? I think I should.

• Why is C++ often the first language taught in college?

  My school starts the computer science curriculum with C++ programming courses, meaning this is the first language that many of the students learn. I've seen that many people dislike C++, and I've read a variety of reasons why. It almost seems to be popular opinion that C++ isn't a very good language. I get the impression it's not very liked based on some questions on StackExchange as well as posts such as: http://damienkatz.net/2004/08/why-c-sucks.html http://blogs.kde.org/node/2298 http://blogs.cio.com/esther_schindler/linus_torvalds_why_c_sucks http://www.dacris.com/blog/2010/02/16/why-c-sucks-part-2/ etc. (Note: It is not my opinion that C++ is a bad language. In fact, it's the main language I use. However, the internet as well as some professors have given me the impression that it's not a very widely liked language. In fact, one of my professor constantly rags on C++, yet it's still the starting language at my college!) With that in mind, why is this the first language taught at many schools? What are the reasons for starting a programming curriculum with C++? Note: This question is similar to "Is C++ suitable as a first language", but is a little different since I'm not interested in whether it's suitable, but why it's been chosen.

• Accessing Windows 7 Printer from Ubuntu Linux via LPR/LPD or Samba

  Hi, I'm having difficulty printing from my Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) based PC to a printer connected to a Windows 7 machine. I was trying to connect using Samba (version 3.5.6) but this always brings up an authentication screen which never accepts any password I use. So I read somewhere that an alternative is to access the Windows printer via LPR/LPD. I added an LPR/LPD printer in Windows 7, but even within Windows 7, I am not able to print as the print que monitor shows as 'printer busy'. The printer in question is an Epson Stylus DX7400 and works fine when using the standard USB ports....but doesn't when I use with the LPR/LPD ports. I even opened up the TCP/IP port 515 in my McAfee firewall without any success. Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Additionally, does anyone have any idea how I can get Samba working for me?
