• What is the best jQuery based window plug-in you have ever used?

  I tried a couple of jQuery based window plug-ins but unfortunately was not satisfied with any of them. The three plug-ins I have tried failed in one or more respects. I'm not looking for very fancy, animated effects, just very basic but yet adequate functionality. Any suggestions?

• VBA Macro On Timer style to run code every set number of seconds, i.e. 120 seconds

  I have a need to run a piece of code every 120 seconds. I am looking for an easy way to do this in VBA. I know that it would be possible to get the timer value from the Auto_Open event to prevent having to use a magic number, but I can't quite get how to fire off a timer to get something to run every 120 seconds. I don't really want to use an infinite loop with a sleep if I can avoid it. • Facebook Is it possible to grab a user's data and populate a form in an iframe?

  I am trying to create an iframe tab for a Facebook Page. On this page, I am loading in an iframe which consists of a form from another domain/site. Is it possible to use javascript to query the graph api to load the user's data into this iframe loaded form using javascript such that is appears pre-populated to the user? I am aware that there is a cross domain security issue. In that case, suppose that my iframe tab is now hosted on the same domain as the iframe loaded form, will this be doable now?

• disallow selection inside an input element

  I am looking to do the following Disallow text selection inside of an input element Do not show the cursor carrot inside of an input i cannot simply blur the input on click, focus must remain in the input. There is probably a way to do this in just IE, i would of course rather have a cross browser solution but ill settle for IE (or FF) only solution. But I still not found an elegant way to filter UI components (e.g. widgets, form elements, tables, etc) using the current user roles without contaminate the view with business logic. same applies for model binding. Example Form: Product Creation Fields: Name Price Discount Roles: Role Administrator Is allowed to see and modify the Name field Is allowed to see and modify the Price field Is allowed to see and modify the Discount Role Administrator assistant Is allowed to see and modify the Name Is allowed to see and modify the Price Fields shown in each role are different, and model binding needs to ignore the discount field for 'Administrator assistant' role. How would you do it?

• Mongrel with Ruby 1.9.

  When starting the server, I get this strange error after updating to Ruby 1.9: " [BUG] cross-thread violation on rb_gc() ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11) [i386-mswin32] This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. " My mongrel version is 1.1.6, which should be compatible with Ruby 1.9. I also still have the Ruby 1.8.6 installation, so i assume that for some reason mongrel tries to access that and kills ruby? My rails version is 2.3.4, in case it matters.

• Using Java server-side with PHP front-end

  Hi!  Does anyone have a real-world experience in building such a project? I'd like to move away questions about "is it good idea or not", but focus on possible solutions. I see one simple way - HTTP GET/POST + xml/json - and one more elegant - AJAX/DWR. As for the first one - I understand that it is possible, but needs quite a lot coding. As for second way - is it possible to use Java DWR engine with PHP front-end? Is DWR language-independent for client side (as it uses just JavaScript)?  Would it be a problem, that client page was generated by one web server (for example, apache+php) and served on server-side by another (for example, tomcat)? I suspect, that Tomcat will complain about sessions. Can this problem be fixed with allowing cross-domain AJAX? Thank you in advance. Denis.

  To know whether two sprites cross each other or not, should we use NSMutableArray to store the sprites ? In my game one fixed sprite(player) is there. And the other is a bullet fired and if this sprite intersects player sprite, then enemy won. I have used NSMutable Array to store the bullet sprites. If I do not use NSMutableArray then even though the the bullet intersects player it is not recognizing the intersection ? I am using ( (CGRectIntersectsRect(bulletRect, playerRect)). Thank You.

• Windows threading: _beginthread vs _beginthreadex vs CreateThread C++

  What's a better way to start a thread? I'm trying to determine what are the advantages/disadvantages of _beginthread, _beginthreadex and CreateThread. All of these functions return a thread handle to a newly created thread, I already know that CreateThread provides a little extra information when an error occurs (it can be checked by calling GetLastError)... but what are some things I should consider when I'm using these functions? I'm working with a windows application, so cross-platform computability is already out of the question. I have gone through the msdn documentation and I just can't understand, for example, why anybody would decide to use _beginthread instead of CreateThread or vice versa. Cheers! Update: OK, thanks for all the info, I've also read in a couple of places that I can't call WaitForSingleObject() if I used _beginthread(), but if I call _endthread() in the thread shouldn't that work? What's the deal there?

• Load Excel data into Linux / wxWidgets C++ application?

  I'm using wxWidgets to write cross-plafrom applications. In one of applications I need to be able to load data from Microsoft Excel (.xls) files, but I need this to work on Linux as well, so I assume I cannot use OLE or whatever technology is available on Windows. I see that there are many open source programs that can read excel files (OpenOffice, KOffice, etc.), so I wonder if there is some library that I could use? Excel files it needs to support are very simple, straight tabular data. I don't need to extract any formatting except column/row position and the data itself.

• Not able to override CSS within IFrame

  I am using disqus comments for my jekyll blog with some CSS styles overriden in my stylesheet and used to work perfectly. Recently, disqus has introduced a new UI for their comments system which has completely broken the font colors. Since my site has dark background, I am trying to apply styles based on new disqus HTML structure generated. However, it seems that none of my styles get applied. It seems that is because disqus is loaded within iframe. Any ideas how can I fix the font colors. • Question about layout in java.

  I have two panels main_panel and child_panel. I have set layout for main_panel by using "main_panel.setLayout(flowlayout)" and added child_panel in main_panel by using "main_panel.add(child_panel)". This child_panel gets added to main_panel but its position is at the cross-section of horizontal midpoint and top vertical section of screen. But I want child_panel to be at the top left corner, something I could have done by using "child_panel.setlocation(a,b)" method, if I have set the Layout of main_panel as NULL. I have used flowlayout here because I want components in the JPanel to keep adjusting with the size of JFrame. So question is, can I add child_panel to main_panel at the exact location I want, even if I set the Layout of main_panel as not NULL.

• Program crashes in debugger before anything happens

  I'm building an application for Windows XP using the MinGW tool chain and it sometimes crashes unexpectedly. So, I'm trying to use a debugger (Gdb) but the program exits with code 03 before anything happens. In fact, all I see from GDB is: [New thread 3184.0x7b8][New thread 3184.0xef8] Program exited with code 03. My suspicion is that there is some failed dynamic linking of a dependency (which are Qt, VTK, and ITK, all built with MinGW). However, this does not happen when I just run the program normally. Or if it happens, it appears to be intermittent and well after the program is launched and running. NOTE: I'm also using Cmake for cross compiling. What should I do? What can I try?

  Hi. I am trying to update a text box. I thought my threading code would fix the problem, but it does not. Can anyone help with this? new Thread((ThreadStart)delegate { txtCapacitance.Text = Math.Round(capacitance, 3).ToString(); }).Start(); Gives the following error: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'txtCapacitance' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on. Note that all this is being started by a dataReceived function which is called whenever USB data is received.

• TFS Security and Documents Folder

  I'm getting an issue with TFS where the documents folder is marked with a red cross. As far as I can tell, this seems to be a security issue, however, I am set-up as project admin on the relevant projects. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a security issue from running the TFS Project Admin tool (available here). When I run this, it tells me that I don’t have sufficient access rights to open the project. I’ve checked, and I’m not included in any groups that are denied access. Please can anyone shed any light as to why I may not have sufficient access to these projects?

  fontsquirrel.com allows you to upload a font and create a @font-face kit which you can apply to your website and use to display fonts which will display cross-browser (even in IE6!). But what I want to know is, is this legal? I've been supplied the font "Lubalin Graph Std" and told to use this for headers on the website I'm creating. I can upload the font file to fontsquirrel.com and use this to display headers in this font across the website - but I'm worried we'll get into trouble for doing this. What should I do?

• Can a 32-bit RHEL4 userland work with a 64-bit kernel?

  Is there a way to change an i386 RHEL4 machine to run an amd64 kernel, but ensure that it still builds software into same i386 binaries? On Debian this seems quite straightforward: just install an amd64 kernel (worst case, build one like this guy: http://www.debian-administration.org/users/jonesy/weblog/1) and prefix everything with "linux32". Then everything that considers uname -m will be unchanged, I just need to handle the few cases that consider uname -r. What is the Red Hat equivalent? Is the only way a full 64-bit installation on another disk and then chrooting back to the 32-bit system before anyone builds anything? (Even the best examples of that seem to be Debian-based.) Background: We make a large system that runs on (a variant of) i386 RHEL4. However, some of the larger RHEL build machines now have enough RAM that they might benefit from going 64-bit (for the kernel and maybe some of the bigger build steps). Our build system doesn't support cross-compilation.

• Ramifications of CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls=false

  I recently updated an application from VS2003 to VS2008 and I knew I would be dealing with a host of "Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'myControl' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on" I am handling this in what I beleive is the correct way (see code sample below). I am running into numerous controls that are going to need a similar fix. Not wanting to have similar code for every label, textbox etc.. that are being accessed by a non UI thread. What are the ramifications of just setting the CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = false for the entire app? I found a CodeProject article with various workarounds and a warning at the bottom to NOT set the property.   I created a flash projector that would be burn in a CD now my problem is that it doesn't open anything when I click on a link to view a pdf. I have search entire web about creating an apple script, fscommand etc... I am a newbie to flash and more specifically to this burn CD cross platform thing. • Javascript Hex String to Image

  Hello everyone. I'll cut right to the chase. Right now I am developing a web based application. It has a PHP REST based architecture that serves up XML documents. On many of these documents attributes are hex encoded picture strings. On the client side jQuery AJAX fetches an XML document with a picture in it. I need to display said picture in some <img> tags. However my knowledge on such methods is lacking so here I am asking for help. Goal: JavaScript String variable in hex or base64 HTML displayed image. Cross browser is required, or a hack for the ones that do not support it is fine. Thanks, Gunnar
