  I am using Zend_Db to insert some data inside a transaction. My function starts a transaction and then calls another method that also attempts to start a transaction and of course fails(I am using MySQL5). So, the question is - how do I detect that transaction has already been started? • Problems getting PowerPoint Combobox to list items correctly

  I am creating a PowerPoint in which I want users to be able to select an item from a list in a combo box. Nothing needs to happen after this, it is just to provide a record, on screen, of their choice. My problem is that I seem to either be able to populate the combo box and users can select an item but the list gets longer each time the combobox is clicked on (i.e each time it is clicked on the list gets duplicated). Or alternatively, I can clear the combo box, then populate it but in this scenario, the users choice also seems to get cleared. • Better understanding of my SQL transactions

  I just realized that my application was needlessly making 50+ database calls per user request due to some hidden coding -- hidden in the sense that between LINQ, persistence frameworks and events it just so turned out that a huge number of calls were being made without me being aware. Is there a recommended way to analyze individual transactions going to my SQL 2008 database, preferably with some integration to my Visual Studio 2010 environment? I want to be able to 'spy' on individual transactions being made, but only for certain pieces of my code, and without making serious changes to either the code or database.

  The problem is this: I have multiple competing threads (100+) that need to access one database table Each thread will pass a String name - where that name exists in the table, the database should return the id for the row, where the name doesn't already exist, the name should be inserted and the id returned. There can only ever be one instance of name in the database - ie. name must be unique How do I ensure that thread one doesn't insert name1 at the same time as thread two also tries to insert name1? In other words, how do I guarantee the uniqueness of name in a concurrent environment? This also needs to be as efficient as possible - this has the potential to be a serious bottleneck. I am using MySQL and Java. Thanks

• Can I write to different jetty databases using JPA that is using the same "entity class"

  I am using Java persistance and there EntityManager class and have it assigned to storage a class object that shall be written to the database. My problem is that I want to write to different databases using the same storage class. My solution to that was to write a StorageManagerfactory that has a Map holding all EntityManagers. The solution looked good until I looked at the databases and realized that all information (undepending of the Map, which gets the correct value) was written to the same database (one of the initialised in the Map). So my question is: Can I write to different databases using JPA that is using the same storage class (the class holding the structure of my database)? Thanks

• How can I resolve ASP.NET "~" app paths to the website root without a Control being present?

  I want to Resolve "~/whatever" from inside non-Page contexts such as Global.asax (HttpApplication), HttpModule, HttpHandler, etc. but can only find such Resolution methods specific to Controls (and Page). I think the app should have enough knowledge to be able to map this outside the Page context. No? Or at least it makes sense to me it should be resolvable in other circumstances, wherever the app root is known. Update: The reason being I'm sticking "~" paths in the web.configuration files, and want to resolve them from the aforementioned non-Control scenarios. Update 2: I'm trying to resolve them to the website root such as Control.Resolve(..) URL behaviour, not to a file system path.

• SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 performance

  I am using SQL Server CE 3.5 SP1 in one of my client applications. When a user loads the program and starts using it, performance is fine. If the user lets the program sit idle for a while, it takes a considerable amount of time (10 or more seconds) for the program to respond. Every time the user asks for a new screen, a call is made to the SQL CE database to get the data for that screen. It seems like the hard drive may be going to sleep and then when the database is accessed, the hard drive has to wake back up. Is it possible to load the entire database into memory and work from that? Are there any other suggestions on how to increase performance?

  I figured out that in order to turn [some name] into [some_name] I need to use the following expression: s/\(\[[^ ]*\) /\1_/ i.e. create a backreference capture for anything that starts with a literal '[' that contains any number of non space characters, followed by a space, to be replaced with the non space characters followed by an underscore. What I don't know yet though is how to alter this expression so it works for ALL underscores within the braces e.g. [a few words] into [a_few_words]. I sense that I'm close, but am just missing a chunk of knowledge that will unlock the key to making this thing work an infinite number of times within the constraints of the first set of []s contained in a line (of SQL Server DDL in this case). Any suggestions gratefully received....

  So I've got a large amount of SQL data that looks basically like this: user | src | dst 1 | 1 | 1 1 | 1 | 1 1 | 1 | 2 1 | 1 | 2 2 | 1 | 1 2 | 1 | 3 I want to filter out pairs of (src,dst) that are unique to one user (even if that user has duplicates), leaving behind only those pairs belonging to more than one user: user | src | dst 1 | 1 | 1 1 | 1 | 1 2 | 1 | 1 In other words, pair (1,2) is unique to user 1 and pair (1,3) to user 2, so they're dropped, leaving behind only all instances of pair (1,1). Any ideas? The answers to the question below can find the non-unique pairs, but my SQL-fu doesn't suffice to handle the complication of requiring that they belong to multiple users as well.   We are tasked with migrating an existing set of entities (currently POCOs persisted with NHibernate against an MSSQL database) to now persist to some kind of web service (yet to be built, either RESTful or SOAP-based, and that we control). I like how NHibernate encapsulates the persistence concerns and lets us maintain a logic-rich, persistence-agnostic domain model. Is there any way to make NHibernate talk to a web service at the back end instead of a SQL database directly? In other words, can "service instead of SQL database" be treated as a persistence implementation detail and allow us to continue to use NHibernate? Am I asking the right question? :)

The Public database contains a table which is mostly for public access level, like "user" table which has basic user information The Private database contains a table which has "private" information, user bank transactions etc I created 2 ADO.Net entity models, one each for Private and Public database and selected the tables. I also created 2 different domain context services On on Silverlight page, I need to get information from the tables that are across 2 databases, Private and Public as described above. Since I think that allocating chunks of non-continuous memory will more likely succeed than allocating one single continuous memory block (especially when memory becomes fragmented) I want to implement that memory buffer as a linked list of memory blocks. What size should the blocks have to efficiently load the memory pages? (read: not to waste any page space) A multiple of 4096? (equally to the page size of the OS) A multiple of 4000? (not to waste another page for OS-internal memory allocation information) Another size? Target platform is Windows NT = 5.1 (XP and above) Target architectures are x86 and amd64 (not Itanium)

• Why Does TFS Allow Orphaned Content and How Do I Get Rid of It?

  My TfsVersionControl database has grown to 40+ GB in size. We recently did a TFS Destroy on a folder tree that should have cleared up at least 10 GB but instead it seemed to have no effect. When I look at the tables in TfsVersionControl, I am first shocked to see that there are no foreign keys at all in the database. Running a few queries, I see that there is some orphaning going on: tbl_Content has 13.9 GB of records that don't have a related tbl_File record tbl_File and tbl_Content have 2.4 GB that don't have a related tbl_Namespace record The cleanup job seems to be running nightly (prc_DeleteUnusedContent) and running it against the database manually doesn't remove any orphans. I see in the log for the cleanup job that it failed on 3/16, which is the morning after I destroyed the large amount of data. The error was due to a full transaction log. Could that error be the reason I'm left with all this orphaned data that can't be deleted? How can I permanently destroy this unneeded content?

  Hi People! I am building a Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) with Java. I won't get into details But I have to build multiple servers who make use of the same classes. I have the following directory structure: /server1 -Main.java /server2 -Main.java /com -Database.java I want to import from the Main.java class for example the Database.class. But of course the following statements won't work: import com.Database; I am working with the javac compiler in the command line (so not eclipse stuff or whatever. just TextMate and the command line). And I found a (pretty stupid) solution by creating a symbolic link in the servers to the com directory. But that is not really an ideal solution. Does anybody have a better one?? THANXS in advanced!! :D

• Free web gallery installation that can use existing directory hierarchy in filesystem?

  There are several different free software gallery projects (Gallery, Coppermine, etc), but as far as I know each of those creates a copy of imported images in their internal storage, be it directory structure or database). Is there any gallery software that would allow keeping existing directory hierarchy of media files (images, videos), as-is, and just store the meta-data of them in a database? I guess at least various NAS solutions ship with software like this.

  Hi, The "python manage.py syncdb" command is giving me the following error: sqlite3.OperationalError: unable to open database file I'm following the step by step instructions in Practical Django Projects, so I think this has to do something with the Windows Operating system acting quirky! Things I've checkde: 1.The path is updated in settings.py is absolutely correcto! 2. Path is : C:\Documents and Settings\fixavier\Desktop\Django\Database\cms\cms.txt So the entire folder - Database, has sharing and security permissions. I'm pretty much at the bottom of the ocean for not being able to follow and successfully execute simple instructions, so could you please help me out here!

  Hi, I'am trying to convert the variable $num into its reverse byte order and print it out. This is what I have done so far: my $num=0x5514ddb7; my $s=pack('I!',$num); print "$s\n"; He prints it out as some non-printable characters and in a hex editor it looks right, but how can I get it readable on the console? Already tried print sprintf("%#x\n",$s); but he complains about an non-numeric argument, so I think pack returns a string. Any ideas how can I print out `0xb7dd1455 on the console, based on $num?

• What is a good way of coding a file processing program, which accepts multisource data in Java

  I'm making a data prosessing system, which currently is using csv-data as input and output form. In the future I might want to add support for example database-, xml-, etc. typed input and output forms. How should I desing my program so that it would be easy to add support for new type of data sources? Should simply make for example an abstract data class (which would contain the basic file prosessing methods) and then inherit this class for database, xml, etc. cases? Hope my question is clear =) In other words my question is: "How to desing a file prosessing system, which can be easily updated to accept input data from different sources (database, XML, Excel, etc.)".
