• Function Folding in #PowerQuery

As an example take a look at the query I did in my previous post about joining a fact table to a slowly changing dimension. It was roughly built up of the following steps: Get all records from the fact table Get all records from the dimension table do an outer join between these two tables on the business key (resulting in an increase in the row count as there are multiple records in the dimension table for each business key) Filter out the excess rows introduced in step 3 remove extra columns that are not required in the final result set. If Power Query was to execute a query like this literally, following the same steps in the same order it would not be overly efficient. Particularly if your two source tables were quite large. However Power Query has a feature called function folding where it can take a number of these small steps and push them down to the data source. The degree of function folding that can be performed depends on the data source, As you might expect, relational data sources like SQL Server, Oracle and Teradata support folding, but so do some of the other sources like OData, Exchange and Active Directory. To explore how this works I took the data from my previous post and loaded it into a SQL database. Then I converted my Power Query expression to source it's data from that database. However a profiler trace shows just the following single SQL query: select [_].[BU_Code],     [_].[Date],     [_].[Amount],     [_].[BU_Key] from (     select [$Outer].[BU_Code],         [$Outer].[Date],         [$Outer].[Amount],         [$Inner].[BU_Key],         [$Inner].[StartDate],         [$Inner].[EndDate]     from [dbo].[fact] as [$Outer]     left outer join     (         select [_].[BU_Key] as [BU_Key],             [_].[BU_Code] as [BU_Code2],             [_].[BU_Name] as [BU_Name],             [_].[StartDate] as [StartDate],             [_].[EndDate] as [EndDate]         from [dbo].[BU] as [_]     ) as [$Inner] on ([$Outer].[BU_Code] = [$Inner].[BU_Code2] or [$Outer].[BU_Code] is null and [$Inner].[BU_Code2] is null) ) as [_] where [_].[Date] >= [_].[StartDate] and [_].[Date] <= [_].[EndDate] The resulting query is a little strange, you can probably tell that it was generated programmatically. But if you look closely you'll notice that every single part of the Power Query formula has been pushed down to SQL Server. Power Query itself ends up just constructing the query and passing the results back to Excel, it does not do any of the data transformation steps itself. So now you can feel a bit more comfortable showing Power Query to your less technical Colleagues knowing that the tool will do it's best fold all the  small steps in Power Query down the most efficient query that it can against the source systems.

• My 2011 Professional Development Goals

  I thought it might be a good idea to post some professional goals for 2011.  Hopefully, I can look at this list at the end of the year and have accomplished most of them. Release an Android app to the marketplace – I figured I would put this first because I have one that I have been working on for a while and it is about ready.  Along with this, I would like to start another one and continue to develop my Android skills. Contribute free software to the community – Again, I have an SMF plugin that will fill this requirement nicely.  Just need to give it some polish and release it.  That’s not all, I would like to add a few more libraries on github, or possibly contribute to an open source project. Regularly attend a user group meetings outside of Java – A great way to meet people and learn new things. Obtain the Oracle Certified Web Developer Certification – I got the SCJP a few years ago and would like to obtain another one.  One step closer to Certified Enterprise Architect. Learn scala – As a language geek, I like to stick to the Pragmatic Programmer’s ‘learn a new language every year’ rule (last year was Ruby).  Scala presents some new concepts all wrapped in a JVM-based OOP language.  Time to dig in. Write an app using JSF – New JEE 6 features are pretty slick.  I want to really leverage them in an app. Present at a user group meeting – Last but not least, I would like to improve my public speaking and skills in presenting.  Also, is a great reason to dig in to some latest and greatest tech. Use git more, and more effectively – Trying to move all my personal projects from Subversion to Git. That’s it.  A little daunting, but I am confident I can at least touch on most of these and it’s a great roadmap to my professional development.

• The partition table is corrupt

  I have a corrupt the partition table on the laptop that is running Ubunutu 10.4. Before the partition table was corrupt I had the following partitions: 2 primary partitions: 1st - NTFS 2nd - Extended 4 logical partitons that are built within 2nd extended: 1st NTFS (68 Gib) 2nd Linux (19 Gib) 3rd Swap (1.4 Gib) 4th Linux (24 Gib) The physical order of these partitions was the following: ( 4th Linux ) - ( 1st NTFS ) - ( 2nd Linux ) - ( 3rd Swap ) The logical order of the partition was different: ( 1st NTFS ) - ( 2nd Linux ) - ( 3rd Swap ) ( 4th Linux ) NTFS partition was big and it resided between 2 Linux partitions, neither of these partitions had enough space to install Oracle 11g. Therefore, I decided to a) either move the NTFS partion to the left or b) remove it completely and extend partition where Linux resides. As I tool I have chosen GParted. But unfortunately it was not able to move the partition because he found that in NTFS partition there are some blocks that are referenced multiple times. Also it was not able to remove the partition neither, because in this case the partitions that follow it ( 2nd Linux ) - ( 3rd Swap ) have to be in his opinion also removed, because the organization of extended partition is a linked list. Since GParted was not able to do such thing I was trying to find another tool. I found diskdrake tool on PSLinuxOS distribution of linux. That tool silently deleted ( 1st NTFS ) partition and I thought that everything was fine. But diskdrake has damaged the partition in a way that I am not able either to boot from the hard disk nor to see the partitions with GParted and even with diskdrake itself! Fortunately I have a live CD of Ubuntu 8.10 and I am able to boot and see hard disk. I have 2 ideas how I can solve the problem: 1) Manually change disk partitions and point them to the correct partitions. 2) Create partition table with GParted that as much as possible is the same with the previous one I find the 2nd approach less time consuming but some data will be lost because of it is not possible to place borders of the partitions exactly how it was before. And moreover I am not sure if such approach would work, for example, if the OS is able to locate files after repartitioning. I feel like that it will but not 100% sure. Are there some ideas how the problem may be solved?

• Keeping your options open in a cloud solution

  In on-premises solutions we have the full range of options open for a given computing solution – but we don’t always take advantage of them, for multiple reasons. Data goes in a Relational Database Management System, files go on a share, and e-mail goes to the Exchange server. Over time, vendors (including ourselves) add in functionality to one product that allow non-standard use of the platform. For example, SQL Server (and Oracle, and others) allow large binary storage in or through the system – something not originally intended for an RDBMS to handle. There are certainly times when this makes sense, of course, but often these platform hammers turn every problem into a nail. It can make us “lazy” in our design – we sometimes don’t take the time to learn another architecture because the one we’ve spent so much time with can handle what we want to do. But there’s a distinct danger here. In nature, when a population shares too many of the same traits, it can cause a complete collapse if a situation exploits a weakness shared by that population. The same is true with not using the righttool for the job in a computing environment. Your company or organization depends on your knowledge as a professional to select the best mix of supportable, flexible, cost-effective technologies to solve their problems, whether you’re in an architect role or not.  So take some time today to learn something new. The way I do this is to select a given problem, and try to solve it with a technology I’m not familiar with. For instance – create a Purchase Order system in Excel, then in Hadoop or MongoDB, or even in flat-files using PowerShell as an interface. No, I’m not suggesting any of these architectures are the proper way to solve the PO problem, but taking something concrete that you know well and applying that meta-knowledge to another platform will assist you in exercising the “little grey cells” and help you and your organization understand what is open to you. And of course you can do all of this on-premises – but my recommendation is to check out a cloud platform (my suggestion would of course be Windows Azure :) ) and try it there. Most providers (including Microsoft) provide free time to do that.

• Core i7-620M vs Core i5-540M

  Hi, I'm recommending a laptop to a colleague, and the specific laptop he has chosen has the above CPU chips as options. Both chips have 2-cores/4-threads. The i7-620M is a 2.66 GHz (4MB Cache) while the i5-540M is a 2.53 GHz (3MB Cache)....both Arrandale architecture. He is a .NET programmer working with SQL Server and Oracle, and occasionally uses Adobe Fireworks for web-related design elements. He also loves playing around in Adobe Premiere Pro, and does a lot of media/video work. Would you notice any significant performance difference between the 2? The laptop manufacturer claims that the battery life on both is the same irrespective of the chip used (although I find that hard to believe), but there is a major cost difference between them, with the Core i7-620M being the more expensive. According to http://ark.intel.com, the one thing that seems different (besides the obvious speeds/frequencies/etc) is a feature called "Embedded" - what is this exactly? • Teamcity build agent gives 504 gateway timeout

  I have a new teamcity build agent machine, which when started up tries to connect to the build server and fails. It never shows up in the connected, disconnected or unauthorised agents tabs of the build server web interface. The logs on the build agent show that it fails to connect with a 504 gateway timeout. The build agent is a windows 2008 server VM hosted on Ubuntu 12.04 under Oracle VirtualBox. I have disabled firewalls on both the Windows and Ubuntu machines. Other VMS with similar configuration can connect fine and do not report this error. What can possibly be preventing this connection?

• How-To Configure Weblogic, Agile PLM and an F5 LTM

  Agile, Weblogic, and an F5 walk into a bar ... I've got this Agile PLM v 9.3 Running on WebLogic, two managed servers. An F5 BigIP LTM. We're upgrading from Agile v 9.2.1.4 running on OAS. The problem is that while the Windows client works fine the Java client does not. My setup is identical to one outlined in F5's doc: http://www.f5.com/pdf/deployment-guides/bea-bigip45-dg.pdf When I launch the java client it returns this error "Server is not valid or is unavailable." Oracle claims Agile PLM is setup correctly, but won't comment on the specifics of the load balancer. F5 reports the configuration is correct but can't comment on the specifics of the application. I am merely the guy in a vortex of finger-pointing who wants my application to work. It's that or give up on WLS and move back to OAS. Which has it's own problems but at least we know how it works. Any ideas?

• Performance analytics via DBMS "plugins", or other solution

  I'm working on a systems monitoring product that currently focuses on performance at the system level. We're expanding out to monitoring database systems. Right now we can fetch simple performance information from a selection of DBMS, like connection count, disk IO rates, lock wait times, etc. However, we'd really like a way to measure the execution time of every query going into a DBMS, without requiring the client to implement monitoring in their application code. Some potential solutions might be: Some sort of proxy that sits between client and server. SSL might be an issue here, plus it requires us to reverse engineer and implement the network protocol for each DBMS. Plugin for each DBMS system that automatically records performance information when a query comes in. Other problems include "anonymising" the SQL, i.e. taking something like SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > 20 AND name LIKE "%disk%" and producing SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > ? AND name LIKE "%?%", though this shouldn't be too difficult with some clever parsing and regex. We're mainly focusing on: MySQL MSSQL Oracle Redis mongodb memcached Are there any plugin-style mechanisms we can utilise for any of these? Or is there a simpler solution?

• Cannot install jdk 1.5 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-23-generic x86_64). I have tried: ~$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-5-jdk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package openjdk-5-jdk I have also tried: ~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jdk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • Getting Perl DBD::mysql working on OS X 10.7?

  I can't seem to get Perl & MySQL to talk to each other on OS X 10.7 Lion. I did all the installs by the book, I used Oracle's PKG installer for the latest MySQL Community Server, and I installed DBI and DBD::mysql via CPAN. There were not problems at all during the install, but, when I try to USE DBD::mysql to connect to my local DB server I get the following error: install_driver(mysql) failed: Can't load '/Library/Perl/5.12/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.bundle' for module DBD::mysql: dlopen(/Library/Perl/5.12/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.bundle, 1): Library not loaded: /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.16.dylib Referenced from: /Library/Perl/5.12/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.bundle Reason: image not found at /System/Library/Perl/5.12/darwin-thread-multi-2level/DynaLoader.pm line 204. at (eval 3) line 3 Compilation failed in require at (eval 3) line 3. • Laptop choice for development: MacBook Pro 17 vs Dell Studio XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15

  Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life?   I have a TCP server, written in java, sending and receiving many short messages, from 500 bytes to 100 KB long. It's a chess game and chat server, to make it simple. The server is running Debian 6. Half of the clients are connecting from 3G networks, and half over standard DSL. A portion of the 3G clients lose connection pretty often. The error I get on the server and on the client socket is Connection reset. I have come across this page at Oracle documentation: socketOpt. I am wondering what I could tune there to lower the number of disconnections from 3G clients. I don't mind about the ping or transfer rate, but just about the TCP disconnections. I am not skilled enough to understand the impact of each setting, but I sort of understood that the TCP window was important, although I don't know exactly how. So I'm asking if anyone here has an idea ? Thanks if you can help.

• How do I switch java versions to an earlier version in Fedora 17?

  I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking... • Hardening non-root standalone Linux Tomcat install

  I want to know if you have any tips as to how to strengthen the security of a non-root install of Tomcat in standalone mode once Tomcat is already installed in a non-root account, in standalone mode. I precise this because, for example, I'm not at all interested by the answers given here (because both Java and Tomcat requires root priviledges there to be installed and I've got zero interest in running jsvc): http://serverfault.com/questions/43765 So far, here's what I've done for my non-root standalone Tomcat 6 install: download and install the JRE .bin provided by Oracle/Sun (no need to be root here) (no need for a full JDK anymore right seen that Jasper [Tomcat's JSP engine] has its own compiler now right?) download and tar -xzf tomcat 6 (no need to be root here) set up transparent port-forwarding (must be root here) Note that my distribution is a Debian one and I have exactly zero interest in downloading Debian package / backports / whatever... Because, once again, I DO NOT want to need to be root to install Java & Tomcat. The only moment I needed to be root was to configure the firewall to transparently do the port forwarding 80 <-- 8080 and 443 <-- 8443. I then deleted all the default webapps but one: cd ~/apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps rm -rf docs rm -rf examples/ rm -rf manager/ rm -rf ROOT/ What about the directory ~/apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps/host-manager, do I need it or can I delete it? So, once I've installed Tomcat standalone in a non-root account (and taken into account that I don't want to enter the root password anymore and that I don't plan to install the whole Apache shebang), what more can I do? Are there connectors I can disable? (how?)

• How-To Configure Weblogic, Agile PLM and an F5 LTM

  Agile, Weblogic, and an F5 walk into a bar ... I've got this Agile PLM v 9.3 Running on WebLogic, two managed servers. An F5 BigIP LTM. We're upgrading from Agile v 9.2.1.4 running on OAS. The problem is that while the Windows client works fine the Java client does not. My setup is identical to one outlined in F5's doc: http://www.f5.com/pdf/deployment-guides/bea-bigip45-dg.pdf When I launch the java client it returns this error "Server is not valid or is unavailable." Oracle claims Agile PLM is setup correctly, but won't comment on the specifics of the load balancer. F5 reports the configuration is correct but can't comment on the specifics of the application. I am merely the guy in a vortex of finger-pointing who wants my application to work. It's that or give up on WLS and move back to OAS. Which has it's own problems but at least we know how it works. Any ideas?

• Which database to use and system/db administration by layman [closed]

  So my friend and I got briliant ;) idea for a business. Since it is not predictable whether it will work out or not, we decided to keep cost as low as possible to start with, in particular not to hire anyone. If it will work out as expected it will generate enough profit to hire professionals in few months. But for the first few months we'll be doing everything by ourselfs. He's a business/finance major, and I'm a software developer, so obviously I have to take care of IT :) It will be a webapp, written in python/django. My questions regarding this project: 1) What database should I choose? I'm experienced with oracle, and have been working with SQL Server for a while, but both of them are too expensive(at least now). It's a developer experience, I've never done any dba stuff. I'm looking for something free(as in beer). Looks like MySql or PostgreSQL are most popular in this sector. I would appreciate any comments on which db to choose. I'm open to any suggestions(it doesn't have to be MySql or Postgre). Here's what I know about data: It will be almost dates and numbers, a little bit of text. Searched mainly by dates. Data will almost never be updated, mostly inserted and browsed. From 30k to 300k new records/month. 2) Servers. My idea is to rent two dedicated servers. During normal operation one would be a web server(debian/apache), other would be a db server(debian/?). My recovery plan is to install everything on both, and in case of trouble with one of machines just run everything on the other one. Does it even makes sense? Any other tips appreciated. Thanks.

• Java applet class never found

  I am having a problem with the java plugins of all three major browsers: chromium, firefox and Internet Explorer. The issue is that applets will always fail to load and yield errors no matter what website or what applet I am trying to use. I can not see any of the example applets on oracle's website; I can not launch the minecraft browser applet; nor can I launch any applet across the web using any browser. I always receive a "class not found:AppletClassHere.class" error. I know that my browser plugin must be working correctly because I can launch the Cisco Nac applet each time I connect to my network and I can launch my own simple applets offline. I am connecting to the internet through a vpn in case that is important. It also seems like a lot of other people I know are having this issue. Re-installing the plugin does not appear to fix the issue. I am asking this question to find out the cause of this problem, and any possible solutions. Thank you.

• VMWare Guest Info - Wrong IP Returned

  We're running a VDI environment with vSphere 4.0 and Oracle VDI 3.2.2 and are having a bit of a problem with users that connect to an IPSec VPN from within their VM. For some reason, once connected to the VPN, the VMWare API returns GuestInfo.ipAddress as the VPN IP rather than the primary IP of the only NIC on the system. The IP address shown in net[0].ipAddress is the correct address and is what vSphere client is reporting. Is there any way to get VMWare tools to report the net[0].ipAddress as GuestInfo.ipAddress? Below is sample output from the guestinfo.pl script. 172.16.1.2 is the example "bad" VPN address that our VDI software is seeing. • Web filtering (Proxy or DNS) with option for users to ignore the block

  We are struggling with our users visiting infected or "attack" sites and Phising in general. Most of our machines are protected by an Enterprise anti virus and monitoring solution (McAffe ePO) and we try to get people to use Firefox... But no AV is perfect and we have to endure personal machines as well (albeit on their own 'Plague' VLANs) and would like to do something about Phishing as our users seem intent on disclosing their passwords to the world... To complicate matters we don't want to implement a block for many many reasons instead we would like to implement something akin to Firefox's "Reported Scam/Phish/Attack Site" - "Get me out of here" or crucially "Let me in anyway", giving the user a choice to still infect themselves if they feel like it (or look at a site incorrectly blacklisted). The reason we can't just use Firefox is we have a core enterprise App only certified on IE6&7 - thank you Oracle. • Public static ip for vagrant box

  I have server (Debian Squeeze) with 1 ethernet card and 2 public static IPs (188.120.245.4 and 188.120.244.5). What I want: Setup virtual box (Ubuntu) with access via static IP (188.120.244.5). What I was trying: config.vm.forward_port - good idea: setup interface "eth1:1" with 188.120.244.5 on host-machine, and add to Vagrant file "config.vm.forward_port = hmm..?" config.vm.network :hostonly, "188.120.244.5" - not working. Was created new interface on host-machine with ip "188.120.244.1". Of course 188.120.244.1 IP isn't mine and I can't access my server via this IP. config.vm.network :bridged - I'm confused how this works :) What I have now: Not working configuration.
