• IIS7 - Lock Violation error, HTTP handlers, modules, and the <clear /> element

  I have an ASP.NET site that uses its own set of HTTP handlers and does not need any modules. So, in IIS6, all I had to do was this in my web.config: <httpModules> <clear /> </httpModules> However, if I try to do the same in the system.webServer area for IIS7, I get a 500 error when I try to view the site, and in IIS manager when I try to view the handler mappings, I get a popup box with the message: There was an error while performing this operation Details: Filename: \?\C:\Sites\TheWebSiteGoesHere\web.config Line number: 39 Error: Lock violation Line 39 is where the <clear /> element is. Some googling led me to a solution involving running this command: %windir%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe unlock config -section:system.webServer/modules ...but that did not solve the problem.

  On a Windows 7 computer, running chkdsk /r /f C: in repair mode, it gives the error, Unspecified error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1. or something like that. I have tried the following: uninstalling all antivirus software scanning with MalwareByte's Anti-Malware doing a Disk Cleanup running Disk Defrag booting TRK and running fsck -t ntfs (gives error Unsupported case. and not implemented). I have also tried a System Restore, but there is a Temporary Internet file that appears to be in all restore points, and that file must be corrupted or something, because System Restore always grinds to a halt when it gets to that file. What should I try next? Thanks in advance.

• HTTP response time profiling

  Hello I have a nginx reverse proxy. The server is close to serving 600-700 requests per second. I have a Munin HTTP load time plugin which is outputting this: http://monitor.wingify.com/munin/visualwebsiteoptimizer.com/lb1.visualwebsiteoptimizer.com-http_loadtime.html Now, the problem is I am seeing some spikes in the graph. Expected response times should always be under 200ms. I am keeping an eye on syslog and messages but I am unable to figure out the actual cause of this. I was wondering if there is any good HTTP response time profiling system which I can install / embed with this nginx server and get a detailed reports / logs on the breakup of time taken by different things and what exactly is the cause of the spikes. The profiling system would also help me understand bottlenecks and how can I further optimize the latency. Most important right now is to investigate the cause of the spikes in the HTTP load time graphs (similar pattern is reported by external monitors - Pingdom) and to fix it to get consistent response times Thanks

• Ubuntu - Upgrade to 10.4 - general error mounting filesystems

  Hello All, Using upgrade manager I upgraded my 8.x LTS installation to 10.4. After rebooting the system failed encountered an error and dropped into the recovery console. It appeared to be a problem caused by ureadahead as described here: http://ubuntuguide.net/howto-fix-ureadahead-problem-after-upgrading-to-ubuntu-10-04. So I renamed ureadahead.conf to ureadahead.moved (after remounting the partition rw). this did not help so I renamed the file back again. After rebooting the following error appears: ureadahead terminated with status 5. udev_monitor_new_from_netlink: error getting socket: Invalid Argument mountall:mountall.c:3204 assertion failed in main: udev_monitor = udev_monitor_new_from_netlink(udev,"udev") init: mountall main process (2532) killed by ABRT signal. • Need HP recovery partition info

  I'm configuring a new HP Pavillion DV4 with a 320 GB disk. I made the recovery DVDs, then did a couple other things (including deleting the recovery partition), and finally decided to restore the system. Unfortunately, the recovery process fails; the three DVDs are read (the recovery program says "Reformatting the Windows partition" and "Copying files required to restore the hard drive") but after it finishes reading the 3rd, and the progress bar reaches 100%, it fails with error 0xe0f00013 - Googling it didn't return anything at all. I'm afraid this may be because I deleted the partitions. So, I'm kindly asking for one of the following, in order of preference, from a HP Pavillion DV4 with a 320 GB hard disk or a similar enough one : 1) A dump of the MBR 2) The type and size of all the partitions in a "new" system so I can try to make a partition table resembling the original one. BTW, I thought the recovery DVDs were supposed to work even if the entire disk was wiped - isn't that the case? Thanks!

  I am using Dell Studio 1558 laptop. Originally it was having windows 7 64 bit Home edition but than i upgraded my system to Windows 7 32 bit Professinal edition. The problem i am facing due to this is that my system is not detecting bluetooth adapter. When i install 64 bit(windows 7)/32(windows vista) bit drivers for Bluetooth it detects the Adapter but only sometimes and much of the times it doesnt. I am not able to find drivers for Windows 7 32bit professional edition and thus not able to detect bluetooth adapter.

  I'm having problems with my ASP.NET web forms system. It worked on our test server but now we are putting it live one of the servers is within a DMZ and the SQL server is outside of that (on our network still though - although a different subnet) I have open up the firewall completely between these two boxes to see if that was the issue and it still gives the error message "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed" whenever we try and use the "TransactionScope". We can access the data for retrieval it's just transactions that break it. We have also used msdtc ping to test the connection and with the amendments on the firewall that pings successfully, but the same error occurs! How do i resolve this error? Any help would be great as we have a system to go live today. Panic :)

  Hello, The Current Situation I have a hard drive that currently is split up like so: Primary Partition C: 9.77 GB NTFS Healthy (System) with XP Pro (in Polish) installed Extended Partition D: 39.82 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot) with XP Pro (in English) installed 6.30 GB Free space When I start my comuter I get a black and white Windows Boot Manager dual boot screen with 2 choices both being Microsoft Windows XP. The first choice is the English version of XP and the second choice is the Polish version of XP. Images of my Computer Management window and Dual Boot screen The Mission What I need to do is get rid of the entire extended partition (D: 39.82 GB & 6.30 free space) and just have the one primary C: drive which I assume will be somewheres around 55 GB big. So in the end I just want XP Pro in English running on my C: drive and no black and white boot screen to show up when starting up my laptop. The Question How do I go about successfully completing The Mission with out making my computer a useless pile of silicon, plastic and metal? UPDATE: So I went ahead and tried to follow Neal's suggestion but hit a wall. I got to a Windows XP Pro install screen that had the 3 following options as well as my drive data: To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press Enter To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C To delete the selected partition, press D 57232 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR] C: Partition1 [NTFS] 10001 MB ( 4642 MB free ) Unpartitioned space 6448 MB D: Partition2 [NTFS] 40774 MB ( 26225 MB free ) Unpartitioned space 8 MB I figured I would go with the first choice ((To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press Enter)) because I just wanted to set up Windows XP on C: Partition1 (which was preselected) so I pressed Enter which brought me to a screen displaying this message: You chose to install Windows XP on a partition that contains another operating system. Installing Windows XP on this partition might cause the other operating system to function improperly. CAUTION: Installing multiple operating systems on a single partition is not recommended. So this leads me to 2 new questions: How do I get rid of the Windows XP (Polish language) install on C: Partition 1 so that I can cleanly and safely install Windows XP (English language) on it? Neal, is this what you meant by me possibly having to delete the partition that the Windows XP (Polish language) install was located on? Since I have the option to delete partitions with the 3rd choice ((To delete the selected partition, press D)), should I do that on this screen or wait until I have Windows XP (English language) safely installed on C: Partition 1? I have to ask these questions because I have read that it is possibly dangerous to delete hard drive partitions. Just being cautious.

  I've moved an older Sendmail/Dovecot system to a Zimbra community edition system. I need to be able to receive messages from certain standalone Linux hosts that may not have valid A records or proper reverse DNS entries established (e.g. AT&T is the ISP or systems sitting on a consumer-level ISP). Establishing the reverse DNS or setting a SMARTHOST is not an option. The error I get in zimbra.log is: zimbra postfix/smtp[2200]: DB83B231B53: to=<root@host_name.baddomain.com>, relay=none, delay=0.07, delays=0.06/0/0/0, dsn=5.4.4, status=bounced (Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=host_name.baddomain.com type=A: Host not found How can I override this? Is this more of a Postfix issue or is it Zimbra? edit - The problem seems to be with an underscore in the hostname of the server. So it's a problem with root@host_name.baddomain.com. Again, how can I override this in Zimbra?

• Reporting Services Returning HTTP 401 Unauthorized

  I have just ported an existing ASP.NET application to a new web server (Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008). It is successfully running on 4 other servers of varying O/S (which I also setup). My ASP.NET app calls into the Reporting Services Web Service (ReportExecution2005.asmx) to generate a report and save it as a pdf to the file system. I consistently receive "System.Net.WebException - The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized." In UTTER desperation I have performed the following... Granted all Users complete access to SSRS via the Reports web page. Granted all Users 'Full control' to <%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.MSSQLSERVER I am not a network / server specialist but I'm the only one that can deal with this and it's driving me batty. Help!

• How do I get a .Net 4.0 app to coexist as an application under a SharePoint 2007 website in IIS v7?

  I have created a small .Net 4.0 website and installed it on my SharePoint server as a separate web site in IIS v7 (using port 8008 for now). I had to install the .Net 4 framework, set up the database, etc. and this all went smoothly and my app works as a standalone website. Now I am trying to get pages from my website to show up in SharePoint 2007. For various reasons (the SharePoint site is using SSL, security, etc.) I now need to move my .Net app to run under the SharePoint 2007 site in IIS. I have added it as an 'Application' and set it up with the same .Net v4 application pool and settings that were working when it was set up as a standalone site. Now when I try to access the application I get the error at the end of this description. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already tried following the instructions on this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/sgoodyear/archive/2007/05/07/custom-web-applications-coexisting-with-sharepoint-2007.aspx but that did not help. Thanks! Critical CPU hungry processes are being starved of resources and causing a processing backlog. The problem is happening on all the 12th Generation Dell servers (r620s) in a recently deployed cluster. I don't think that's what is happening though. Dell suggested that the author try using the Performance profile, but that didn't help. He ended up applying some settings in Dell's guide for configuring a server for low latency environments and one of those settings (or a combination thereof) seems to have fixed the problem. Kernel.org bug #36182 notes that power-limit interrupt debugging was enabled by default, which is causing performance degradation in scenarios where CPU voltage regulation is kicking in. A RHN KB article (RHN login required) mentions a problem impacting PE r620 and r720 servers not running the Performance profile, and recommends an update to a kernel released two weeks ago. ...Except we are running the Performance profile... Everything I can find online is running me in circles here. What's the heck is going on?

• Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?

  My company's IT department is mostly a Windows run operation and in order to become more secure, they are altering the way that the Macintosh computers login to our internal network so that they use Active Directory like their Windows counterparts. I have been given Administrative permission on my Mac and I am able to do most of what I used to be able to do in terms of authentication of software installations. However, there is a problem: the "Software Update" feature doesn't work. What happens is that when I try to get the Mac to perform its Software Updates from the Apple menu, the normal window appears listing what has to be updated; I am able to select what to update and click the "Update" button, but then nothing happens. It doesn't ask for authentication like it used to, the computer doesn't perform any download or installation (it does sometimes ask me to agree to license agreements for iTunes). I can download the updates individually and install them without any issues, but the auto-update fails. I'd rather use the Software Update menu item like I used to: it is much more convenient. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 10:09 EST: I have posted this question to the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard support forum. EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 12:39 EST:Yes, the Terminal command "sudo softwareupdate --install --all" does work flawlessly. I want to avoid that as my co-workers are generally not comfortable on the Mac. I also tried Chealion's suggestion to delete "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist", Software Update still fails. However, I did get diagnostic messages in the Console (below). I've deleted the MS Office Package Receipts and examined the suhelperd (Software Update Helper Daemon?); it appears that suhelperd is crashing and that explains why it doesn't work. I've submitted a bug report to Apple (radar://7408619).   I have a Windows 2008 R2 Virtual Server. I removed the "Default Web Site" using IIS Manager and now all my other sites now report an error saying they can't access the site (or something similar). I thought I could just remove the role, re-install IIS again and start with a clean slate. After I re-installed IIS it's now reporting the following error in the event log: The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW service) failed to register the URL prefix of "http://www.mash-guild.com:80:192.168.245.132/" for the website of "4". The required network connectivity may already be used. The site has been disabled. The data field contains the error number. • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Can´t install OS from usb flash drive

  My previous problem was describe here: Can't boot OS from USB drive, showing black screen with blinking cursor and there are informations about my laptot. So please look there and then read rest here. I changed flash drive and it fix the problem but now when I boot to Ubuntu (or I tried Fedora, it do same) I can´t install system. I click on Install Ubuntu 10.10 I choose language, then on next window I click Forward but it just show waiting cursor and nothing happen (same Fedora). It doesn´t freeze so I can end install and I can take printscreen (when I was taking the screen, cursor was shown as waiting, not normal as in picture, it´s weird). Image where my installation ends I think there is some problem with Disk and Volumes and so. But I used chkdsk from W7 on boot and It said everything all right and I try utility in Ubuntu and check file system and it is all right too.Image with my Disk (Volumes and other things) I hope someone helps me.   A bit of background first - I'm trying to configure a MicroBlaze Linux (big-endian version) system on a Xilinx ML506 eval board. The goal is to use the second partition of a CompactFlash card attached to the Xilinx SystemACE controller. So far, root in initramfs works and after boot, I can mount and use said partition, no problem. But if I try to use it right from the getgo with the "root=/dev/xsa2" kernel command line parameter, the system hangs with [...] Freeing unused kernel memory: 143k freed Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000004 And that's it - no regdump, no call trace, no further nothing from the serial console, even though kernel has been configured with debugging enabled. Now, I'm pretty new at this, so is there something else I should be doing to see something more informative from the kernel?

• Repairing yum's repositories on a RHEL5.

  I am using RHEL5 and yum is missing many packages, such as apache, php, and all php libraries . I have added the rpmforge repository, but i am still missing these packages. This is an i686 machine and there might not be many i686 packages available, I think that if i force an i386 i'll have serious problems. How do I make sure I have a large number of compatible packages on a RHEL5 system? I didn't install this system, is it normal for RHEL5 to have virtually no useful packages in yum? How do RHEL5 administrators use yum without introducing conflicts with currently installed packages? Should I ditch yum and use apt? Thanks!

• Fiddler not working in Windows 7 - LAN Settings locked?

  I've been using Fiddler for years, but now, on Windows 7 (64 bit) I cannot get it to monitor traffic from IE 8. With the Firefox add-on, it is able to monitor Firefox traffic with no problem. This is not related to monitoring HTTPS traffic, or traffic to localhost. I've tried running IE and/or Fiddler with "Run as Administrator", but no luck. The best clue to the problem that I have is that in IE8, the "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings" dialog accessed from "LAN Settings" in the Internet Options / Connections tab is all grayed out. I have two Windows 7, 64 bit computers, both on the same LAN. One works fine, the other has these settings grayed out, and a note on the Connections tab: "Some settings are managed by your system administrator". However, the system administrator has NOT set any. Any ideas?

• After forced quit, “killall Finder” says “No matching processes…” but PID still exists?

  Here's one for ya. Upon a forced quit of the Finder with unsuccessful relaunch, "killall Finder" in terminal returns: "No matching processes belonging to you were found" Oddly enough, the PID for finder does actually show up after a "ps -A" to reveal all processes. But the time is perpetually listed as 0:00:00, upon repeated PID listings. I tried the following to manually launch it: open /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app But it puked: LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -600 for the file /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app. Any other ideas on a Finder relaunch that don't involve rebooting? (I usually have 6 spaces open at once, each with a handful of apps and it's a pain reloading them all.)

• Simple Backup Strategy for Amazon EC2 instances / volumes?

  You have entered Introductory Backups for Amazon EC2 EBS-backed Windows Images 010... I have been browsing my brains out to find a simple backup strategy for our single windows 2008 server running SharePoint Services. This is an EBS-backed image of one server with one data volume. I don’t need anything exotic. I only need a “daily” backup (losing a day’s worth of data is not catastrophic). We have created and saved an EBS backed AMI image (Windows 2008) we are comfortable using. We started off making backups by simply creating a new EBS AMI image. This is really simple, but the running server is put offline during the first 10 – 15 minutes of creating the image – not ideal. The standard way of creating backups would seem to be creating snapshots of volumes attached to a running instance. Again it’s pretty simple and the server remains usable during the snapshot generation. The apparent Catch-22 is that you can’t simply launch a new instance directly from a snapshot. I know how to bundle a running instance to S3 storage and then register the AMI from the S3 bucket. This does allow me to capture a backup of a running instance and, if the running instance is lost, register the AMI from the S3 bucket and launch the new AMI to recover the instance, but this seems really convoluted and it seems ridiculous to have to juggle back and forth between the AWS Console and the S3 Organizer plug-in for Firefox to get this accomplished. (Please don't mention the command line approach, this is an 010 level course). From playing around with EBS-backed images, the following approach appears to work for me (all done within the AWS Console): 1.For your backups, simply snapshot the system volume (/dev/sda1) as needed. 2.If you lose your running instance, do the following: a.Create a new volume from your last snapshot backup b.Launch another instance of your starting AMI (must be EBS-backed) c.Stop this instance. d.Detach the existing system volume from the new stopped instance and discard. e.Attach the newly created volume as system volume (/dev/sda1) to the stopped instance. f.Re-start the new instance. I have tested this out a couple of times and it seems to work for me. Question: Is there anything wrong with this approach?
