• Windows Boot Manager, linking a 'device' to boot linux

  I'm attempting to boot linux on a UEFI-GPT machine with a Windows Boot Manager (WBM). So far I have installed Archlinux (Arch) with Grub. The grubx64.efi is successfully on my windows boot partition and I can see the option to use it in UEFI-BIOS, selecting this loads grub and I'm able to get into Arch fine. I have noticed that in the Windows Boot Manager, selecting from the splash screen, 'Change defaults or choose other options' 'Choose other options' 'Use a device', shows the boot options as in UEFI-BIOS, in my case grub shows as 'Linux'. Selecting 'Linux' reboots the computer and loads grub then Arch. Is there anyway to use this entry for the device 'Linux' to show directly on the WBM splash screen under the entry for Windows 8.1? Ideally i'd like the 'Arch Linux' to link to the 'Linux' device. Guidance with bcdedit appreciated, thanks in advance.

• Win7 Pro x64 task manager hangs when restarting explorer.exe after waking from sleep

  I have a desktop running Windows 7 x64 Pro, set for Hybrid Sleep on a wired network. Wakeup is only enabled from the keyboard (wake on mouse and Wake-On-LAN are both disabled). Sometimes when it wakes up, there is no network connectivity. The notification area icons for both network and volume don't respond to clicks. If I open the Network and Sharing Center, clicking the red X doesn't do anything. Restarting does fix the problem, but I'm looking for a solution that does not require restarting (if at all possible). Drivers are all up to date. I've tried opening Task Manager and restarting the explorer.exe process, but Task Manager freezes for a few minutes, the "New Task" dialog closes, and explorer.exe has not restarted. CPU and memory usage are both normal. One thread suggested making sure the BIOS was set for S3 sleep mode only (not S1 or S1 & S3), but I haven't checked this yet. Going back to sleep and waking back up does not help. So far only a reboot has fixed the issue. System specs: Windows 7 x64 Pro Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 128 GB Crucial m4 SSD (Firmware version 0309) Intel Core i7 2600 3.4 GHz 16 GB RAM Any ideas? Brandon

• Reserving an IP with Netgear router from Time Warner

  I tried everything but keep getting the following error: "Duplicated MAC address". Nothing is duplicated. I disconnected the PC that I would like to assign the IP. Basically this is important as I will configure some port forwarding and my notebook must always get the same IP from DHCP. This is called DHCP reservation but apparently is not working on this router. Has anyone being luck to have this working? The model is CG814WG and you have to click on LAN IP under web administration, -Sergio

• how to properly enable drag-and-drop in Windows 7 (with iTunes in particular)

  On two computers with Windows 7 at work and at home with the same version of iTunes (10.1.0.56) at work I can drag-and-drop files into iPod, and I can not at home. At home only adding them first through a dialog box to a Library and only after that drag-and-dropping into iPod (or iPad) works. Initially I thought the problem is in iTunes, but looks like it's the same version, so most likely it's the Windows 7 config parameters. It's 64-bit W7, and I have admin privileges in both cases. The only difference I could think of is it's an enterprise version at work and ultimate at home. What should I change at home to enable that drag-and-drop-ing files into the application?

• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help.   I am trying to use blender to simulate the Lycurgus Cup. The cup is an example of dichroic (two-color) glass, and appears green when a light source is on the outside of the cup, and appears red when a light source is inside the cup. I have made the glass a red color, and then used the colorbands under the Object-Material/Shading-Ramps tab to add green specular and diffuse color. However, this makes the glass appear the same mix of red and green whether I put the light source on the inside or outside the cup. An example can be seen here: According to the second post here, someone was able to to fake the effect of a dichroic glass in blender rather easily through the use of a magic procedural texture but they provide no clues on how to do this (in blender). Does anyone know how to achieve this effect in blender?

Whenever people send invitations from Apple Mail to a Windows/Outlook machine, the invitations are garbled and look nothing like the nicely formatted invitations that Outlook people are used to. We also have no tools to view shared calendars, so we can choose mutually open time slots, and other useful calendar features that Outlook has and Apple Mail seems not to. So is there a plugin or third party program that will give Apple Mail the nice calendar features of Outlook? (By the way, I've looked into actually buying Outlook for Mac, and the pricing is kind of prohibitive, because you MUST buy the whole Office Suite, which we already have, there's no upgrade path, and there's no volume discounting.)

• Why doesn’t windows explorer show my removable / USB drive even though the command prompt does?

  I'm running WinXP SP2. Around 50% of the time, when I slot in my USB drive. Windows explorer refuses to show the drive. If I click on the Safely remove hardware icon on the tray, I can see a menu item for the drive - say drive G: (the light on the USB drive is also on) If I type in G: into the address bar of explorer, it says 'Cannot find...' If I type in G: into a command prompt window, it works and I can do a dir to see the list of directories on the drive. To fix this, I've to remove-reinsert the pen-drive. But doing it every day is annoying. Also this happens only on this machine.. I use this drive on my home machine and it works flawlessly each time. Can anyone suggest things that I could try ? • Why would the Default Gateway constantly require resetting?

  I've had a (mostly) steady internet connection for the past two months. For the last hour, however, my connectivity has been dropping every 10 minutes or so, and must be reset. So far, I've always been able to fix the issue by running Windows network diagnostics (On Windows 7 64 bit), but the lack of constant internet is making it a pain to try and stream video, download games through steam, etc. Windows always reports a fix by "Resetting the Local Area Connector", telling me: Default Gateway Not Available. What's going on? Is the trouble on my end, or with my ISP? (Timewarner Cable) Things I've Tried: Reinstalling the motherboard's LAN drivers Manually setting a default gateway (gets cleared, reverts to default settings) Unplugged (Hard Reset) the router Unplugged / replugged ethernet cable.

What type of file system does it format the drive to? It has an eSata cable so it must support NTFS right? Or does it use ext3? How good is the media streaming? What type of files can it stream? The chinese input method on Mac OS works just fine, but on Windows, if I use the Google IME for example, a = z q = w etc... so it uses a qwerty layout even though my keyboard is azerty.   I was wondering if there is a way to access a deeply nested shared networked Windows folder on Mac (Lion) like you can on windows with the Run box. say I know the folder I want is on the computer Homer-PC, the G drive, the folder ABC/234/CDE on Windows I can Win+R then \Homer-PC\G\ABC\234\CDE return and it should open that folder directly, Is there something similar on the Mac?   I just purchased an Asus VG248 monitor (supports 144Hz refresh rate) and I can not increase the monitor's refresh rate beyond 60Hz from Windows. My system setup: 2x AMD 6990 graphics cards 1x Asus VG236 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #1 (120Hz) 1x Asus VG248 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #2 (60Hz) Does anyone know why I can not set the new monitor to a higher refresh rate?
